Holly Sonders of the Golf Channel Played a Celebrity Pro-Am
Holly Sonders, the co-host of Morning Drive, joined the Golf Channel a little over a year ago. Before landing at the Golf Channel, Sonders spent time at a couple different local stations as well as the Big Ten Network. Sonders is from Ohio (that’s a deal-breaker), but she attended Michigan State where she won a B1G championship as a part of the golf team. This week she played the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am. She was partnered with Rickie Fowler.

She is the only woman playing in the Pro-Am today at Quail Hollow but tournament organizers have been very accommodating to her and she is excited to play today and knows that a lot of people will be following Rickie.

The Astros have some really compelling young talent. I don’t know what our win projection through PECOTA is this year, but this is clearly a better team than the one that started the year last year. The Jordan Schaeffer acquisition is looking pretty smart, so far. Our starters are overachieving a bit right now and I expect them to come down to earth at some point. But 65-70 wins seems possible with this team.

Thanks man. Quail Hollow used to be a dump, but then some developers built this rich ass neighborhood right next to it and then it got the membership and funding to take off. They also wanted to build this nice shopping center down the road from the course, and about a mile from my high school. It was going to have a upscale hotel, saks 5th, and all that. However, the deal fell through and for over a decade, a huge mound has sat where the shopping center was supposed to go. After awhile the city got mad at the mound fo dirt so they ruled they ahd to plant grass. So now there is a grassy mound just sitting there. Quail Hollow is nice though.

Actually, I think your homerism is getting in the way. They have some young guys (that really arent that young, Castro and Lowrie) that will stick. They completely lack any potential stars though. That farm system is one of the worst in baseball. They have a LONG way to go.

All I said was compelling young talent. I never said any of them were going to be stars. If you think my homerism is getting in the way, then you haven’t been around enough. I’ve said many many times that the Astros are still rebuilding their farm system and probably won’t be competitive until 2015 and that this year and next year, while probably improvements on the abortion that 2011 was, are still going to be rough.
All that I said was that I find this team interesting and that I like how the team has changed from last year and that those changes could mean a slight improvement in wins (9 wins is pretty slight in the context of an increase from 56 to 65). Anything beyond that, you inferred yourself.

Put it this way: the talent level on the team may be similar to last year if certainly more raw–we did have Pence and Bourn last year and clearly they have not been replaced–but the fact that it’s young talent is an improvement. I never meant to imply that these guys are all ready for primetime, but I stand by my assertion that this is a better team this year. I am very familiar with the woes of the farm system and I also find it ironic that one of Ed Wade’s last acts as GM as to start the process of replenishing it by getting Singleton and Crosart from the Phillies, but the direction this time is facing is finally a positive one.

Moving Lee to first base was a great idea. He’s still lazy and his swing is still slowing down, but he won’t tire as quickly this year by chasing down balls he can’t otherwise get to in left field. I look at this Astros team like the SMU football teams of the early 90s. Young, hungry, but going to take a lot of beatings before they can be good again. I’m hoping though that the analogy ends there and the Astros don’t take 25 years to start back towards relevance though.
