Roundup: Former NFL 1st Round Picks Arrested by the FBI; Crazy Arkansas Lottery Ticket Story & Butler Will Join the Atlantic-10
Sofia Vergara … the thought-patterns of success … 26-year-old swimming champ dies of cardiac arrest … a nice chart of what parts of the country reads what media outlet … this is a terrible video … shocker: getting hit with a taser could kill you … Jessica Simpson gave birth … where have all the rock stars gone? … April was a bad month for CNN … hunter mistakes his friend for a turkey, shoots him twice … “California man forgotten in cell says he drank urine” … this is a pretty cool story …
“Three former National Football League players have been arrested by the FBI on federal charges in connection with an alleged scheme to steal people’s identities and file false tax returns in others’ names, according to authorities.” [Herald]

Everyone read the log deadspin piece on Sarah Phillips? What a bizarre and fascinating story.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:07 AM
TL,DF. I still dont completely understand, but I dont know who she is so I am having trouble caring enough to read the whole thing.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:12 AM
Read the whole thing, the original investigative piece. Then it will make sense.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:14 AM
I fall into this camp. Best I can tell she’s a prototypical 21st century “journalist,” hustlin for page views and followers and nothing else matters (not a shot a TBL, industry in general).
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:14 AM
Sarah Phillips.
*crickets*
Is she thick?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:14 AM
I really couldnt. Read probably 1/4 of it, realized i was only 1/4 of the way in, and gave up.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:15 AM
I think the online scams and stealing websites sets her apart from a “prototypical 21st century journalist.”
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:15 AM
I read some people on Twitter saying she used to comment here, is that true? I dont remember her.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:16 AM
Finders keepers losers weepers
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:16 AM
Same here. Although, I have to hand it to Deadspin – that’s really good work for an awful website.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:17 AM
Yeah, because hacking phones for pics isn’t something a big organization like News Corp would do.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:18 AM
She wasn’t a regular but did comment a few times. She had twitter dialogues with several people here, so it’s a story that intrigues many of us.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:18 AM
If Sarah Phillips pick rate was correctly cited in the Deadspin piece, then I will say that there is a staff writer here who did better. She won’t be missed. Granted my avatar is boring.
That whole crap she was pulling last fall of RT me and make a pick, and if you get it exactly right I send you $500, should have been clue #1.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:19 AM
Also, Stoglin – die in a fire. You were a shot-chucking POS but you were still Maryland’s best player and key to making an ACC run next year. What an asshole.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:20 AM
Nice choice for a Wednesday morning. Muy caliente.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:21 AM
I wish I’d known about this. the National Scores Predicting League counts me as a celebrity for my picking prowess.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:21 AM
Let’s go with “she” from this point forward, agreed?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:22 AM
TBL, would be interesting to have you write about what made you decide not to investigate the tip you got.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:25 AM
Like every other guy who noticed her either on Twitter or ESPN, I immediately checked out all the photos she had of herself.
That they were of completely different people… THAT was the first clue.
I really enjoy that Lynn Hoppes was involved.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:26 AM
Larry Brown is hella one Stalin-esque mofo brah and that smu sure sounds like a urine soaked heck hole (waiting for the commenter thebiglead deserves, but not the one it needs right now).
Apparently your economic principles violate the laws of thermodynamics.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:27 AM
Joseph himself was tripped up by another defendant, Lanny Fried, 34, of Miami Lakes, who got caught trying to cash checks at the store front and then began cooperating with agents to target the former NFL player.
Snitches get stitches.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:27 AM
Is that Pradad guy responsible for 95% of the Sarah Phillips scam? Seems that way to me. Could he face criminal charges?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:28 AM
I believe TBL will say he never got an email about it, which may be true. But even if he did, do we really believe he would have investigated? It’s just not something that is done on this site, be it for lack of time or other reasons.
/NTTAWWT
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:29 AM
Does anybody truly exist, man?
I liked the one guy name-dropping TBL saying he was part of the original sale, so bizarre and random…was Nilesh Prasad BBOB?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
Well to be fair to News Corp the preteen girl had already been murdered.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
She was going to be next week’s Cold Call Monday
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
I agree with Htown. This is a rather intriguing story.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
Today is all about the Kate Upton video. PERIOD.
/I will be back in 5
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
Nilesh Prasad is funny on SNL.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:31 AM
Sarah Phillips lost her freelance gig at ESPN.com because she and her shady friends were allegedly scamming people.
What a strange story. I know everyone likes to pile on TBL for a variety of reasons (some deserved, some not) — I think this falls into the “not deserved” category. He was not the only person duped by SP.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:32 AM
Sofia Vergara
Thick? More please. I also enjoy the WWTDD thread titles.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:32 AM
Will this be the extent to which this site covers this?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:32 AM
His facial expressions were great.
Maybe I have watched COPS and JAIL too much. I didn’t feel sorry for her. Plus that hair and makeup deserve to have her beaten.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:32 AM
to a baby Elephant I presume?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:33 AM
Will this be the extent to which this site covers this?
I am very much interested of the answer to this question
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 AM
US Weekly isn’t into investigative pieces?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 AM
I can only assume someone here has already linked the Sofia Vegara sheer top photo this week? I nearly started pounding the desk and howling like in those old Looney Tunes bits
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 AM
King Grizz – I was “duped?” All i did was run with some of “her” (whoever that is) picks. As Jay V noted, a lot of them were winners.
Don’t believe her name ever appeared on this site and I never linked her ESPN stuff.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:35 AM
I can’t wait to read ESPN’s PR releases in regards to this.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Agree that Sarah Phillips should be referred to as “she”
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Awesome.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Today is all about the Kate Upton video. PERIOD.

Oh…I linked to those the other day. Love me some Vergara.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:37 AM
I’m under the impression J-Mac and others associated with this site engaged with “her” on Twitter and otherwise communicated with “her”, but I don’t think duped is correct – we all take a bit of a leap of faith communicating with strangers.
Now, ESPN was duped (our boy Lynn Hoppes). Covers was duped. And those poor bastards who sent her money and had their work stolen were duped.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:38 AM
King Grizz – I was “duped?” All i did was run with some of “her” (whoever that is) picks.
You were duped in the sense that this person presented themself as someone they were not. You promoted that fake persona with retweeting her and having a semi regular dialogue on Twitter with her. She also commented on the site as “Sarah Phillips” and I believe all commenters have to go through you.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:38 AM
The media chart was a fantastic link. So cool. The Huffington Post is far more popular than I imagined. I wish they would have included Drudge though.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:39 AM
Until some Sarah Phillips dong photos surface, yes. Or if she was in any way remotely connected to a university, then we’ll tear that university a new one.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:39 AM

OK, I can agree with all of this. The thing that really weirds me out is the different pictures thing. Maybe it’s a 21 year old girl who is not confident with her looks and picked a random internet picture for her. Or maybe it’s a man.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:41 AM
What your point here? That by letting someone comment on a national blog or sending 140-character messages on a site used by 500M people that TBL did something wrong?
This is the Internet. Almost everyone presents themselves as someone they’re not.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Deadspin did the leg work to find a real Sarah Phillips in the public record and could tie her to the other scumbags in the story, so it’s a safe bet there is a real person with that named involved in some way.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:42 AM
I can’t be the only person who doesn’t care about Sarah Phillips. I saw some action on Twitter last night, Googled her name, went to Deadspin, read three paragraphs of that story and closed the browser. Why does it matter?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Butler!
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:42 AM
can an attorney in here cover this one? that story is rather confusing. how can the lady who threw away the ticket prove the winning ticket was hers? isn’t that why they say to always sign the back as soon as you get it? seems like if she didn’t sign it, she should lose it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:42 AM

Yeah, as far as I know nobody sent her money or offered to give her access to our twitter accounts, nor recommended others do so. For all I know, Timmy is not the Enchanter he claims to be either, but I still interact with him.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Austin Hatch, who might have the most incredible (and sad) story of any college hoops recruit in a long time, says he’ll play for the Wolverines in 2013.
Amazing. His dad (R.I.P.) surviving one tragic flying accident, only to perish in another (piloting both)? If I hadn’t read the story, I’d have never believed it.
I hope the kid makes it, not just in basketball but the rest of his life.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:43 AM
Grizz – Our dialogue consisted of gambling. Never her ESPN work. I never linked it/tweeted it. (First time I heard of “condescending wonka” was yesterday.) I still have no clue who I was talking to, which is weird. Speaking of weird … hey Lisk, i think i now have to fly out and meet you.
Commenters don’t “go through me.” They sign up and receive an email. Their first comment is usually blocked. Hers contained nothing profane/racist so it went through.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:43 AM
I think it’s really interesting story of a person deceiving their way up the Internet food chain, stealing money from all sorts of strangers along the way. I can understand others not seeing it that way, though.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Ha!
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:45 AM
What your point here?
My point is that Sarah Phillips was an onstaff ESPN writer. She had ‘credibility’ but gained it, through what appears to be subterfuge. This wasn’t a TBL commenter that was having a dialogue with him on twitter — this was a nationally known writer with 60k twitter followers.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:45 AM
that’s about as far as I got as well. not sure why the internet outrage is so prevalent today. well, I guess I do, it’s the internet for fucks sake, but still, seems way overblown.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:46 AM
sad but true fact about the web.
ps – I keep it 100, as Jabar Gaffney said.

OK fair enough — regardless it’s a really strange story.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:47 AM
I covered that HS a few years ago during my newspaper days. Very small and private, but very good at a lot of sports. Their girls BB team wins state titles a lot and both soccer programs are money.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
That ESPN piece on the Butler move to the A-10 is 2nd rate. There is a lot more to the this story. Can Butler hang in the A-10? Will Stevens get exposed tactically in the A-10? Will he even stay? I’ve read rumors Dusquene might replace Butler in the Horizon. It’s a lesser conf but they’d have a bigger intra-league profile. Then, the A-10 might still be fracturing into 2 divisions, or 2 leagues (public/private).
Also, the ESPN comment that this devaststates the Horizon is terrible. It’s not like other Horizon schools haven’t done well on their own, and neither did Butler raise the Horizon financially via tv deals.
An interesting move on many levels, but poorly reported on that article. A lot more to it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
Speaking of weird … hey Lisk, i think i now have to fly out and meet you.
Ha! True. I’ll see if that actor I get to play me is available for a meeting.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
Yes, I understand. But how does that in any way relate to this blog? You mentioned that this site was “duped” as if they are somehow culpable. I’m wasnt really sure where you were headed with that.

You guys could have a ton of fun with a “Who Else on The Internet Isn’t Real?” post later today.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:50 AM
I still have no clue who I was talking to, which is weird.
the internet demands an explanation!
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:50 AM
I vaguely remember Sarah Phillips commenting here, it seemed strange at the time how “she” was clamoring for attention with some generic “I’m a girl that knows sports” comments.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 AM
hunter mistakes his friend for a turkey, shoots him twice
Buncha Elmer Fudds out there. Shooting at movement in the brush? Thought my buddy was a wounded turkey, so I shot him again? wow.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 AM
“duped”
I guess ‘duped’ wasn’t the right word, it’s not like TBL lost anything with this whole scenario. I think I was paying attention to the story because I didn’t want to study for the GMAT last night — I take it next Saturday.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Scripty – agree on the article, but cant deny its good for Butler hoops and the school in general. I fully support this move.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Good luck.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:52 AM

May 2nd, 2012 at 8:53 AM
This sounds callous, but I wonder how long Michigan has to keep Austin Hatch on full scholarship. Is the school obligated? He hasn’t been cleared to play and hasn’t played basketball in 10 months. With scholarships and their adjoining roster spots at a premium, I wonder what Michigan’s options are.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:53 AM
(First time I heard of “condescending wonka” was yesterday.)
/nobody reads the comments
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Is Sarah Phillips a top 10 imposter of all time?
Frank Abangale doesn’t think so. Milli Vanilli does.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Good luck.
Thanks — it’s strange going from not studying at all from the past 4 years to trying to relearn math.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
I for one am fascinated by this Sarah Phillips story. Mainly because I had no idea you could sell you twitter account to some random person on twitter. That was weird. I do recall TBL pointing us to one of her comments here claiming a celebrity was commenting or something like that. Funny because nobody knew who “she” was at that point but now “she” is actually a celebrity.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:55 AM
J-Mac had his name dropped by one of the scumbags as part of a story they were weaving in one of their hoaxes. Totally random, it seems.
On the other hand, someone claims they informed J-Mac that “she” was a fraud and a scam artist a month ago. To whatever extent that is true and what details that person provided and why it was never pursued could be another interesting part of the story, if J-Mac chooses to talk about it. If not, we’ll all have a new story to freak out about in the next day or two anyway.

May 2nd, 2012 at 8:56 AM
damn Grizz, kinda sounds like you were duped into reading that long ass article instead of studying. good luck. I’m trying to talk myself into taking a licensing exam and can’t do it because of all the studying involved. I didn’t study/take tests well in college, doubt 10 years after the fact I am any better.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 AM
damn Grizz, kinda sounds like you were duped into reading that long ass article instead of studying. good luck.
I actually duped myself into studying at first, then reduped myself into reading the Deadspin article and the Twitter fallout. I think got back to my original duping and got a couple chapters done. Get the licensing!
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 AM
I’m in the dark on the Sarah Phillips topic, but I’ve gleaned enough from the comments to know that I don’t give a shit about it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 AM
Wait, was this the one that was really sensitive about the shit people were saying?
May 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 AM
So, TBL seems to have reached a limit to the PAGE VIEWS >>>>> EVERYTHING ELSE philosophy. What happened to catering to the masses? People googling Sarah Phillips are going to end up at Deadspin instead of TBL! This is horrible!!
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:00 AM
a kate upton GIF and sophia in the roundup? its too early to have a kickstand.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:00 AM
I mean, I use my real name on here. But a bunch of you other Keyzer Sozes could stand to be a little more forthcoming.
I get that. But I’d also like to know how many random tips a site like this gets in a day/week/month and then how many of them actually turn out to have merit. I dont know that I would have believed this/cared at all, either.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Buncha Elmer Fudds out there. Shooting at movement in the brush? Thought my buddy was a wounded turkey, so I shot him again? wow.
most turkey hunters are quietly making turkey calls. Up here, three years ago maybe, a guy shot his 16 year old son dead when he mistook his turkey call for a turkey, and shot him dead through a bunch of bushes with a shotgun.
It happens all the time. The ridiculous part besides murdering your son? The turkeys that over winter up here spend a lot of time eating bugs out of manure piles. That’s two very small degrees of separation from a literal pile of shit, so they’re mostly inedible. People just shoot them because it’s the first thing you can kill in the spring.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:01 AM
agree on the article, but cant deny its good for Butler hoops and the school in general. I fully support this move.
if you view athletics as a PR arm for a school it’s a great move. Financially, the cost of being in the a-10 will be greater to the school (Horizon is extremely efficient for travel) and weigh more heavily to the budget. As long as Butler succeeds (NCAA appearances 40-60% of the time) then this is a good move. If they languish, it’ll be muted.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 AM

From December, some commenter basically called this Sarah Phillips thing after she commented on the Oregon unis.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Probably gotten a dozen “she’s a fraud” emails in the last 6 months about her. None were detailed beyond, “look at the photos – they can’t all be the same person.” No mention of scamming out of twitter accounts or websites.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Perhaps if J-Mac was given the tip that she was dating Mark Sanchez, he would have fun it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
*run* it, of course
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:04 AM
TBL, a belated thanks for yesterdays’s roundup David Aldridge nba draft article. Good content and clean layout. I realize it’s an arm of nba.com but I thought it was good analysis.

Dont agree that its bad for the school because of travel concerns. That program has a lot of money. Butler has had good coaching (Collier, Matta, Stevens) and NCAA success for the last 15 years. I dont see it suddenly dropping off, especially given that thier first year in the A-10 they should have a real good team.

I vaguely remember Sarah Phillips commenting here, it seemed strange at the time how “she” was clamoring for attention with some generic “I’m a girl that knows sports” comments.
that wasnt sarah phillips, it was some other “girl” who had a foot avatar on twitter, that 27 guys called a cunt inside of about 5 minutes. No wonder she hustled off.

Nice find, that was the post I was thinking of.

He’s still a ways away from even signing a letter-of-intent, so Michigan isn’t obligated to do anything. But since this is Michigan basketball and not SEC football, they plan on honoring their verbal commitment to him.
For what it’s worth, anyone that can fly to their cottage on Lake Michigan in Charlevoix doesn’t need the scholarship money.

May 2nd, 2012 at 9:20 AM
sparty, seriously, you’ve got nothing there. There is not a “direct link” to JMac. He’s already said, twenty minutes ago that he gets emails all the time about Sarah Phillips being a fraud.
Outside of an actual scammed dude contacting him with details, he’s got no basis to start an article, other than just some fucking scumbag who couldn’t get his wank on to more than 2 pictures of Sarah Phillips that matched up.

I’m not sure how it is unfortunate for TBL. This site doesn’t do investigative stuff. It doesn’t sound like he really cared. It is kind of nothing story other than ESPN and some kid got duped.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:23 AM
And didn’t that ManCave guy say last night that he brought it up to TBL months ago, but it wasn’t more than a mention. He admitted not having any details.
I’d fact check myself, but no Twitterverse here at work.

I am not claiming to have anything. TBL stated nothing was sent to him from that guy (something was). then that guy backed off that tweet saying that nothing was after TBL barked at him on twitter. now that guy is claiming that DS ripped him off.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:25 AM
TBL stated nothing was sent to him from that guy (something was).
yeah, that’s the same guy who told his 82 followers that all parody accounts were “scams.” Because the best way to steal money is to pretend to be barack obama’s exclusive dog cook.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:25 AM
I feel like I’m a fairly naive person when it comes to talking to people on the internet. However, the second someone tweeted, emailed, or gchat’d me for money I would immediately think something strange was going on and cut off contact. May 2nd, 2012 at 9:26 AM
what I mean is, it’s just another guy rambling shit on twitter. That’s not really the basis to start an “investigation.” You’d need the email or DM threads that deadspin has, dontcha think?
And your website (which I wish I hadn’t gone to this morning) has two separate attempts to tie JMac into this.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:26 AM

May 2nd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
I think one of the deadspin pieces mentioned that Sarah’s dad is a lawyer. So it might have been her dad writing that instead of her husband. Which is pretty funny.
May 2nd, 2012 at 9:27 AM
To be fair, the parody accounts that do sponsored posts and contests, THOSE things are quite often scams.

yeah, and I actually took a couple of the tests (there are 5 all together) a couple years ago and got hung up one 1 of them and got real frustrated, to the point where it felt like a waste (all of the studying). it would probably be a small raise, starting off at least, but would open some doors for sure. but it would also mean putting aside doing anything fun for at least a year and concentrating on studying all the time.

May 2nd, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I was at a farm on Sunday. They had this box, about 2′ x 2′ x 4′. They said it could easily hold over 5,000 bees. Point being 30k bees could fit into a relatively small space, like a corner of an unchecked attic or garage or something.

Good ol’ Schemppy. Boy, the stories he could tell.
