Perhaps We Should Have Seen the Albert Pujols Slide Coming? He’s Been in Decline For Three Years
The surprisingly slow start of Albert Pujols has been one of the bigger baseball stories so far this season, but perhaps it shouldn’t be so shocking. Bernie Miklasz of the Post-Dispatch recently took a look at some numbers dating back to 2009, and it’s possible we’re just seeing the continued decline of an aging hitter. Yes, as of today, Pujols still remains homer-free. On the bright side, there are only nine years remaining on his current deal.
For starters, over the last three seasons, his on-base percentage has seen a drop — .443, .414, .366 — along with decreasing slugging percentages of .658, .596, and .541. His walk rate has also seen a dip, a rather large one, dropping nearly in half since 2009 when it was at 16.4%. It has since fallen to 14.7% in 2010, and 9.4% last year. The list goes on, his chase rate has increased significantly, and he’s uncharacteristically pulling nearly everything. He’s a confused mess.
So while his output has been stunningly awful thus far — 0 home runs, 5 RBI, .547 OPS — what we’re seeing might just be more of the same downward trend that’s been taking place over the last handful of years. Sure, his numbers likely won’t remain so pedestrian, but don’t be surprised to see dips across the board when compared to his 2011 season. Glass half-empty? He went 0-for-4 last night. Glass half-full? He had an RBI!
Having said that, all of this will become moot when Pujols goes on a 28-game hitting streak that includes 16 home runs, countless RBIs, and his OPS jumps up 350 points. For now, we point and keep on pointing until things change.

Interesting point by Jason Stark that moving forward, teams are going to use this as a scare tactic to try and keep homegrown talent from leaving.

His body language has been baaaaad lately.
He’s had a few rough patches in the past, but he always appeared to be calm and cool about it. Now, he looks like he is struggling as much on the inside as the numbers show.
I’d like to see the guy pull out of the nosedive, but nobody outruns Father Time.

Said it from the start, St. Louis is lucky they didn’t sign him. They got two WS titles out of the guy and avoided paying him over $200 million dollars. I really wish he was still on their payroll.

Fans are so cute. Albert got the team two titles and was outstanding. He then was offered 25ish million a year and took it. I bet the punk rocking the jersey would have turned down a similar percentage raise to stay with their company.

Thanks KC. I’m glad to see Jason is getting called out on his bullshit post yesterday from several angles.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:30 PM
I love Pujols, think he’s a great player, but I think he might a tad older than he’s let on. Says he’s 32, but man, I’m 42 he looks like the same age as me.
Those folks in the DR have trouble with the birth certificates.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Vernon Wells got paid after one ridiculous season. Otherwise, he’s been flat out shit. Angels should have cut him instead of Abreu.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:31 PM
So you would say those things about Lance Berkman?
No. Mainly because he was traded. Lance didn’t even want to go, but wanted a shot at a ring and knew he wasn’t going to get it in Houston. We needed to rebuild and get prospects. That’s not even close to the same situation as Pujols and the Cardinals.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:31 PM
They were talking about Belle’s ’95 season on Houston radio yesterday. Over 100 XBH’s in a 144 game season. Still lost MVP to Mo Vaughn!!??
When is the last time a player fell off a cliff like Pujols MAY do? Dale Murphy?
Incidentally, Bautista has to be happy that Pujols falloff is taking some attention from his…
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I think they lump-summed him. I recall the Orioles getting reimbursed from their insurance, and think Albert, in turn, received a payout.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:31 PM
There’s also this.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
3.83 seconds is how fast Mike Trout made it from 3rd to home last night. Stole his first base last night too with ease. Angels fans can hang their hats on that kid for years to come.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
lol….you assume they even have them.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Never said it would work, or that players should listen, but you think some GM isn’t going to point to this and say, “Is all that really worth it?”.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Lance didn’t get traded to St. Louis. He signed there. It’s not the same situation as Albert, but the point is this:
Cardinal fans are the scum of the Earth.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
When is the last time a player fell off a cliff like Pujols MAY do? Dale Murphy?
Brady Anderson?
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:33 PM
I bet the punk rocking the jersey would have turned down a similar percentage raise to stay with their company.
Boom. That’s what is so silly to me when fans get all butt-hurt when Joe Hitaballguy signs as a free agent with another team.
Replace “pro athlete” with “mid-level management drone” or “wage slave” and any one of us would almost immediately take the similar percentage raise doing the same job.
And, I’ll bet a dollar most of us would gladly move to another city while taking that raise, doing the same job.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Lance didn’t get traded to St. Louis. He signed there. It’s not the same situation as Albert, but the point is this:
He signed there after getting traded to the Yankees. He sought out a new deal with the Astros that off season, but the team rebuffed him. It’s not an apt comparison. At all.

Patrick Ewing. His decline was so fast and so repulsive.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
I’ve been calling this Pujols decline every year since 2002. I’m very glad to see that I was right
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Have the Angels visited the Ballpark in Arlington yet this year? That should aid his drought. The Big A, the dump in Oakland and Safeco are very cavernous parks. Albert’s HR totals are going to go down during his tenure in Anaheim with those venues and his aging process. Dude got to play at Wrigley 9 times a year when he was with StL. As someone who saw a lot of those games, let me tell you that the wind (and atrocious Cubs pitching) aided those power totals a tad. The Crawford boxes in Houston, and the Great American Ballpark probably didn’t hurt either.

This times 10.
Like what was he supposed to do, turn down a quarter of a billion dollars so he can go to see the Arch everyday? I am Team East Coast all day, but if I had to choose between St. Louis (for less money) Southern California (for more money), I’d get my yellow lunch box, do my best Jimmy from The Wizard impression and start walking.
