New Orleans Suspensions: Jonathan Vilma Suspended For Entire Season, Will Smith Gets Four Games
Roger Goodell has finally ruled on the suspensions for Saints players involved in Bounty-Gate. As expected, the most severe penalty came down on Jonathan Vilma, the middle linebacker for the team. Vilma has been suspended the entire season.
In addition, Scott Fujita (now with Cleveland) has been suspended for the first three games, Will Smith suspended for the first four games, and Anthony Hargrove, now of the Packers, for the first eight games.
Vilma, the defensive captain, received the largest penalty because he was found to have helped start the program with Gregg Williams, and he also pledged $10,000 to any player who knocked Kurt Warner and Brett Favre out of the 2009 playoffs.

Waiting for Rog to investigate the Bears bounty on Megatron.
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Clearly what the players did was wrong, but I’m not sure Rog appreciates the player/coach dynamic (or maybe he just doesn’t care). Players are trained to do what coaches tell them, either directly or implicitly. In my opinion, the coaches should get significantly tougher penalties than the players – I don’t think that’s happened here.

Once they knew how badly it could get, the Saints were proactive about their replacements. They signed Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne and Chris Chamberlain and restructed Vilma’s contract to give themselves some cap space.
So it could have been worse.
Now if they can just get Drew Brees signed, we can put this offseason behind us.

volduck, how is offering money ‘telling’ the players what to do? and yes, coaches should get more of a hammer and they did. not sure how they proved these players tried to injure for money, other than documentation on vilma’s 10k of his own thrown into the hat

Can’t even think of something clever enough to award Spencer for that brilliant comment.
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Seven, I believe offering cash to players is basically a directive – they’ll certainly be as motivated by that as anything the coaches actually say. Obviously adult, professional players need to be held accountable for their actions as well – would just like to see a bigger difference in penalties for employers and employees.

May 2nd, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Sehr gut, Spencer.
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:51 PM
The NFL is preparing the inevitable lawsuit defense, though. That’s why this is different.
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:52 PM
What the shit, did Clay get banned?
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Got a week vacation. Spence is picking up the slack in the funny department though. We need everyone to chip in. Kinda like a pot luck humor thing until Clay gets back.
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:55 PM
All of this and that. Lawsuits is why Goodell is rapidly trying to change the play on the field because of the concussions. You know he doesn’t really care about player safety when he tries to implement an 18 game season.

What did he finally do?
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Well, if he did that, than he dug his own grave.
This. When it comes to Rog and the Owners, anything that costs them money will be addressed without mercy.
May 2nd, 2012 at 12:58 PM
This. Husker, I get the lawsuit angle, but that doesn’t excuse gross hypocrisy on the part of Goddell. The Saints shouldn’t have a rat bucket strapped to their chests because the NFL was criminally negligent regarding player safety for the last 30 years. I’m no Saints fan, but they are getting a royal cornholing here.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Never call someone’s baby ugly, even in jest.
Ah yes. It’s like with umpires: the one thing which will get you run absolutely every time is calling them queer. With JMac, it’s any jab at his family. Somewhat understandable.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:00 PM
I understand why Goodell is dropping the hammer on this issue – I’m just not a fan of his enforcement in general – way too over the top on some matters and invisible on others, IMO. Of course, the players leave themselves exposed when they keep a union president that makes Billy Hunter look like Marvin Miller.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:02 PM
It does to them, because some cat who get suspended for 8 games (or whatever amount) for a DUI isn’t going to file suit. If y’all can’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s not right, it just…is.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:03 PM
I suppose it is. I can’t say how I would respond to a crack about my daughter. I honestly don’t think I’d mind, but it takes an awful lot to offend me though. I don’t get that feeling from TBL.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:04 PM
This isn’t about whats right or moral for the NFL. Its about protecting the bottom dollar. As Husker stated, this is trying to protect themselves for these lawsuits. But don’t think the NFL actually cares if there is bounty programs going on anymore than they care if teams are video taping each other. As long as they don’t get caught and it isn’t in the news, carry on.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Don’t want to speak for the group, but I certainly get the why. I also get why some people hit their wives, drive drunk, watch The Killing, bang chicks over two bills, kill someone for sneakers, own a Celine Dion album, and put milk cartons with one drop left back in the fridge. Doesn’t make it right.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:06 PM
I don’t understand how severe suspensions would help them in a lawsuit. Every single person interviewed said this stuff has been going on for years. Even if the league claimed they ruled with an iron fist the second they heard about bounties, there is still an overwhelming amount of evidence that bounties have been in the league for decades.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Which they can’t, because the NFL warned the Saints about this twice before finally taking action.
But your point stands — I can’t imagine a judge or jury in the world deciding a few Saints suspensions undo 40+ years of blatant disregard for player safety.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:10 PM
I see you, vez.
Too busy enjoying the schadenfreude.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
looks like i missed something. Is the baby in question, in fact, ugly?
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Sorry, I’m honestly confused here. When you were talking about lawsuits I thought you meant guys like Favre and Warner were going to the league for failing to stop bounties. Did you mean something else? I don’t see how anyone who got suspended from the NFL after they got a DUI could ever sue the NFL for the suspension.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM
It bears repeating — Goodell isn’t cracking down on the Saints because of the bounty program, but because they lied to him about it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:14 PM
I can’t say how I would respond to a crack about my daughter.
your dog is fugly
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:15 PM
No, TBL’s baby is adorable, which made it pretty obvious to me that he was making a jokey comparison, and even clarified himself just in case he was taken seriously. Oh well.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Or are you talking about the impending concussion/player safety lawsuit?
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM
That’s irrelevant when we’re talking about player suspensions, especially on a comparative basis.
Even if we go down that road — Vilma gets a year suspension for lying while Roethlisberger gets four games for rape, Stallworth less than a year for a manslaughter, dozens can beat their wives, do drugs, shoot up clubs, etc — it’s still excessive.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Also, Spence is the shit, Fresh Princin’ and all.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:18 PM
If I had banning abilities and somebody cracked on my kids, I wouldn’t think twice about a permanent ban. But I tend to get drunk with power and go overboard.
I hope Clay comes back, but I think he has been looking for a reason to quit this place.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:19 PM
It was nice to see you. Your dad is gay.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Not to go all Coop with this, but he was never criminally charged. The four game suspension was bullshit and every other players union would have had it thrown out.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Please. Husker is gorgeous.
/Newfies FTW!!
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:21 PM
In those other cases, did anyone lie to Goodell when they were confronted with evidence of their wrongdoing?
Goodell is making an example of New Orleans because Payton, Loomis, et al outright lied to him that they had stopped the bounties after they were first caught. He is making an example of the team, front office and players alike. Vilma and the others got caught in the crossfire, but that’s what happens when you play with guns.
May 2nd, 2012 at 1:32 PM
I’m not too bummed. I mean, it sucks, but it could’ve been more guys. If anything, Vilma should be getting thanked for being the fall guy.
And if the Saints really wanted to give an FU to Goodell, they’d get a deal with Brees done real soon.
