Junior Seau’s Emotional Mother: “Take Me, Leave My Son”
Junior Seau’s mother, Luisa, met with reporters outside of his Oceanside, California home earlier today after learning of her son’s passing. I have to warn you that this clip is terribly sad and beyond heartbreaking. At one point she said, “I pray to God, ‘take me, take me, leave my son.’ But it’s too late.”
There are absolutely no appropriate words for this other than to say our deepest sympathy goes out to the Seau family.

Great piece by Rushin.

Wow. That was powerful and terribly sad to watch.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Did you see the guy in the Batman underpants who leapt from the bleachers at Camden Yards on Opening Day and spent 63 seconds eluding justice on the outfield grass, his cape flouncing in the breeze, before a pile of policemen — presumably in defiance of Commissioner Gordon — finally tackled him in left-centerfield?
I saw it because I was at the game. It wasn’t all that great.

sad, sad, stuff.

I don’t know who approached who, so I’m not going to judge her or the TV station, but the last thing that woman needs is to be talking to a TV camera. It’s disgusting.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:39 PM
It is an interesting debate though. I know the rationale for not showing it, but they certainly show plenty of actual bad things on TV all of the time.

Take Jimmy Johnson, take Tommy Thompson, take my best friend Bo.
Take anybody that you want as long as she don’t go.
Take any boy in the world, daddy please don’t take the girl.

i agree 1000%. It makes me sick to see the today show interviews with families whose kids died the day before, etc.
WHY THE HELL ARE YOU INTERVIEWING?!
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Here’s the “state” of professional football…
Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers’ 1994 Super Bowl team to have died. In December, linebacker Lew Bush suffered a heart attack at age 42. Other members of the team who have died are running back Rodney Culver, linebackers Dave Griggs and Doug Miller, defensive tackle Shawn Lee, defensive end Chris Mims and center Curtis Whitley.
It getting to WWF dimensions. In the years to come the NFL will pay millions/billions in damage awards from jury verdicts.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Wow…all the idiots calling Seau a coward should be forced to watch this lady. Save the ignorance for a little bit.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Because it’s compelling television. The people don’t have to accept the interview.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:43 PM
God damn that hurts to watch.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:43 PM
There are absolutely no appropriate words for this
I think we’ve done a pretty good job today…oh you said “appropriate”.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Awesome.
/signed, America
Coward may not be the right word, but selfish does come to mind.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:44 PM
It’s a dangerous game. Always has been and always will be.

I hate country music, but that song is terribly sad.

Save it until all the facts come out..we have no idea if he was depressed had brain trauma..we know nothing.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:45 PM
I couldn’t disagree more, but I know me and Menarky are in the minority.

thats exactly my point. why would you agree to be interviewed about a tragedy in your family that just happened?

I can’t judge her if she agreed to speak to the press today. Who knows what’s going through her mind right now? I hope I never have to find out.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Agree. I was just talking about suicide in general. If you have kids and take that route…it’s just hard to swallow without being upset along (or more so) than sad.
I’m not a fan of it, but that’s their rationale and while that video was hard to watch, it certainly was compelling.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:47 PM
per Danny Parkins’ twitter: 8 of the ’94 Chargers now dead. Seau. 2 heart attacks. 1 enlarged heart. 1 drug overdose. 1 car crash. 1 plane crash. 1 struck by lightning.
But sure, blame it all on evil football. Especially the lighting one. (the irony of that one isn’t lost on me)
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Could be worse, it could be….uh….Vermont! Yeah, Vermont, they’re worse.

May 2nd, 2012 at 4:47 PM
She wants a reality TV deal. Shootin’ with the Seau’s.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Laughed too hard at that, mole.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:49 PM
Sad as hell

No wonder players never want to retire…once they’re done they are really DONE.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Oh boy
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Time and place was lost on Vlad it seems.
Let’s not crucify him now. We’ve all been doing it all day long. And if we haven’t been doing it, we’ve been laughing at those that are.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:52 PM
The life change they go through once they retire has to be jarring. That’s why they need to develop something else that interests them before retirement.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Coward may not be the right word, but selfish does come to mind. Dawg
I don’t know. If one’s state of mind is so far gone that they think suicide is the answer, then that person is not in a rational state of mind in any way shape or form.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Lighten up. It’s a beautiful day. Tragedy’s far greater happen every day.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Didn’t Seau try and make it 2 car crashes?
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Like gambling, for instance.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:53 PM
per Danny Parkins’ twitter: 8 of the ’94 Chargers now dead. Seau. 2 heart attacks. 1 enlarged heart. 1 drug overdose. 1 car crash. 1 plane crash. 1 struck by lightning.
I learned this through Jason Lisk’s post earlier this afternoon.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:55 PM
Worst fucking feeling in the world is to lose a child. That’s just hell on a parent.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Oh I totally get that. I just have a big issue with suicides as those who do so seem to weigh their own issues over what will be caused by their actions. So by definition I think selfish is an apt word to use, albeit a bit…tough.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:56 PM
I took the 2 month old to get shots today and was so sad when I saw her in pain. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose her. Like…literally can’t even imagine what that does to someone.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:57 PM
Basketball and baseball for my future son. Maybe some soccer. No football, unless he’s a receiver who refuses to go over the middle.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:57 PM
I don’t know if it’s true or not, but apparently Seau’s suicide note said something about not being able to live in a world where Yardwork didn’t exist.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:57 PM
I can’t tell you how many times segment producers tried to get me worked up. Always amused the hell out of me, but then I’d be alongside the likes of Aruba Girl’s Mom and watch them work her into the tizzy they want. Manipulative li’l bastards.
May 2nd, 2012 at 4:59 PM
Selfish is fair. I know parents that this has happened to and their lives have basically been over ever since. Still recovering over six years later with no end in sight. So sad to see.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:00 PM
I know we many times use humor to get through tragedy, but at the end of the day the sight of his mom in front of those mics was heartbreaking.
Coping mechanisms cover up only so much. The death didn’t really hit home for me until seeing her in tears.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:00 PM

I almost lost my younger one when he was 3. The events of that day are burned in my brain.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:02 PM
If this doesn’t bring back yardwork, nothing will
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:02 PM
Exactly. It’s like a tornado goes through a neighborhood, but it keeps coming through every fucking day for those who are left behind and they know it’s coming and they can’t do anything about it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:03 PM
Oh man…that’s gotta be crazy. Though my biggest concern wouldn’t be remember what almost happened. It would be the Mrs. never letting me hear the end of it.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:05 PM
I’ve pretty much decided I want my son to be good enough to have a nice HS football career, but not good enough to play any further than that.
Although, I have a feeling shit is going to get real real by the time he gets to play, and football is going to look much different than it does today.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:07 PM

My wife’s brother committed suicide a week after we got engaged two years ago. So I unfortunately have seen first hand what it does to a family. It’s pretty devastating to say the least.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:09 PM
fixed
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:09 PM
Sorry to hear that. Yeah, seeing that first hand is about as heartbreaking and gut-wrenching as it gets.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:29 PM
Tim McGraw is fucking awful
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:31 PM
also, love this coming from the guy that accused Garret Uekman, the football player from Arkansas who died last season, of dying of an over-dose 5 minutes after the post was up.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:34 PM
This may beat the Roberto Clemente joke from earlier for line of the day.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:41 PM
I feel like had my dad killed himself as a teenager it wouldn’t have been any more selfish than my grandparents’ reason for having him (only had him cause they needed more work on the farm and half of his 9 siblings were 10-16 years older than him). Except for the part where I wouldn’t exist. That would be totally selfish.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. That wasn’t cool
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:44 PM
“Oh man…that’s gotta be crazy. Though my biggest concern wouldn’t be remember what almost happened. It would be the Mrs. never letting me hear the end of it.” HuskerDawg
Dawg – maybe I misread, but I read him to mean that his kid almost died, not that he misplaced him/her.
On second thought, maybe you were making a joke after all.
May 2nd, 2012 at 5:50 PM
if we dug into this farther I think we’d find it all started with “Artie’s Picks”
May 2nd, 2012 at 6:15 PM
Yeah, sorry about that. If I can change…then you can change…WE ALL CAN CHANGE
May 2nd, 2012 at 6:28 PM
Doug Miller was the one that got hit by lightning. It was while he was driving a motorcycle.
/nah, they’re not jinxed
May 2nd, 2012 at 7:13 PM
God did not take anyone. Stop blaming God. Junior decided to end his life.
May 2nd, 2012 at 7:23 PM
Everyone is jumping on football…no one wants to address the steroids and cocktail of other drugs these guys choose to meddle with. The money they waste and know they can’t retrieve because there’s no job that’ll pay them as before, etc.
Like the guy posting how many of them died. Half of them dird from tragic accidents. Plane crash, vehicle accident. Please.
May 2nd, 2012 at 7:32 PM
The choice isnt between “football kills everyone” or “its fine these guys are just unlucky.” Football absolutely impacts your body and lifespan in a negative way. But in a group as large as “ex pro football players,” there is bound to be some freak early deaths and young onset diseases that are not related to the game.
