Ryan Braun Hit Three Home Runs and a Triple Against the Padres
Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun smacked three home runs at Petco Park last night to go along with a two-run triple in an 8-3 Milwaukee victory. The controversial and often chatty fella now has seven more home runs than Albert Pujols, who is far too busy doing his best to embarrass Angels owner Arte Moreno. Here’s Braun:
”It’s definitely special. It’s an extremely challenging game we play. You’re going to deal with a lot of failure, a lot of adversity, and when you have a special night like that you try to enjoy it and it’s that much more fun and enjoyable when your team wins the game. It was definitely a pretty cool night.”
I can understand Braun’s level of enthusiasm considering two of the homers came off of the immortal Joe Wieland.
Right here is probably where we all stare into the camera while raising a dramatically speculative eyebrow, so raise away. It’s also probably where Braun reminds us he passed a test that he can’t talk about, by talking about it.
***
In other baseball news… Delmon Young has been suspended seven days following his arrest in Manhattan on a hate crime harassment charge. Seems like a good dude … Yu Darvish went seven innings and allowed a run on four hits while striking out nine. He’s given up three runs overs his last 27-1/3 innings … No home runs in April for Albert Pujols. This is getting weird. And hilarious … Big Papi went deep twice last night in Boston’s 11-6 win over Oakland. Come on, Albert, if Papi can still hit home runs, so can you.

You know you’d deflect a lot of grief if you just put Yardwork in the title.

I enjoyed how Braun referenced his season thus far as “terrible”.
May 1st, 2012 at 11:54 AM
obviously he’s on steroids again.
May 1st, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Or a Yardwork tag so you can search for it. I couldnt tell which post yesterday was supposed to be it, as neither had that parapraph breakground of the rest of the games. Oh well.
Buchholz to the bullpen! Anyone?

There are about fifty Farmacias in Tijuana, less than 15 miles from Petco.

Dude might be for real. Needs a few months to confirm.

I’ll pass on that. Replace him with who?
May 1st, 2012 at 12:02 PM
darvish is fun to watch
May 1st, 2012 at 12:02 PM
No, thought it might minimize the effects of his ‘one bad inning’ every time he pitches. Plus, what to do with Aaron Cook.

Brian LaHair has over 50% of the Cubs with 5 of their 9.

At least you didn’t pull a Bulls style Ballin’ and ignore it altogether.
Awesome game for the MVP.

They have a starting pitcher coming off the DL this week, with nowhere to put him.

He raises an interesting thought though about the future of football in general. We can’t imagine it not at the center of our sports universe, but where might it be in 50 years?

He raises an interesting thought though about the future of football in general.
I was being somewhat facetious. He brought up an excellent point about the colleges will be the next to get sued. There are a lot of former players that never made the NFL that will be looking to cash in. Tons of players.

Jordan Schaefer has gotten on base for the Astros in every game so far this season. Astros won last night 4-3 when Schaefer scored the winning run on a Jed Lowrie single.
All of 17,000 people watched it happen. So you know it’s true.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Braun must have hit the post-game Kung Pao spread pretty hard.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:09 PM
The Ryan Braun situation has obviously striked fear in Pujols. He’s noticeably weaker this year. Clearly, he has cycled off of steroids, at least for the time being.

Ultimately, football goes the way of rugby,…except that rugby is growing by leaps and bounds, particularly at the youth level. Even though the youth level is not tackle, the HS divisions are seeing growth as well.

I heard them talking on ESPN about prospects that make the show at 19 and they went from Harper to Jeter to Griffey. May Jupton murder many baseballs in Washington for this oversight.

Teddy Ballgame – 84 in a row. Cyrogenic Lobsterpot Legend.
Kenny Lofton (’94?) had a season where he it where they got past 100 games and he had only had 4 games where he hadn’t reached base safely. Those are pretty great.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:19 PM
I just like to simulate in franchise anyways.

Kenny Lofton is in the pantheon of players who the Astros controlled at one point but let go through trades or other means. Also in that pantheon: Curt Schilling, Johan Santana, Carlos Guillen, Freddie Garcia, John Halama (ok not a huge loss on that one), Ben Zobrist….the list goes on.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:23 PM
A lot of sluggers have the blueprint down. Use your talent to get to the MLB. Juice until your elite. Perform at an insane level the year prior too or in a contract year. land the 100+ million dollar deal. then get off the juice.
guys like bonds,McGuire, Sosa…they just loved it too much, braun got caught too soon but the MLB let him ride with it.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:23 PM
sounds like dennis’ speech from “the gang goes jihad.”

May Jupton murder many baseballs in Washington for this oversight.
Tell you what. When that guy is healthy, he is a beast. Not nearly enough folk talk about his offense. And, he is an underrated defender in the outfield.
The Nats have been stumbling lately. Other than LaRoche, the offense is struggling. If Cahill’s sinker is on point, the Nats are in for a long night at the plate.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Anyone know what the hell is going on with Poo holes not hitting any HRs? Off the juice maybe?

Pujols had his worst season last year.

get in line behind lacrosse. that shit is everywhere in rich burbs of chicago
Lacrosse’s appeal seems to be fairly limited to areas like that. I don’t see it being more popular than rugby in the long run. I’m not even sure Indians play lacrosse anymore, and they invented it.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Anyone know what the hell is going on with Poo holes not hitting any HRs? Off the juice maybe?
Some guy on MLBN last week (Byrnes?) speculates that Poo holes is trying to pull the ball too much, not keeping his head and front shoulder in, and struggling to adjust to new pitchers.
Maybe he’s just due for a bad year.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Stupid meeting. Of course I miss, well, whatever the baseball post is called now.
I am enjoying the Bryan LaHair run right now. Looking forward to Theo ripping off a contender for the 29 year old journeyman at the deadline.

Anyone know what the hell is going on with Poo holes not hitting any HRs? Off the juice maybe?
The season is less than 30 games old. Remember the season when David Ortiz couldn’t hit his weight in the early part of the season and only had like 5 home runs? Right most people don’t, because he went on to have a pretty good second half.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:32 PM
He pressed early in the year and the thumb injury threw him off for a couple weeks as well but last week you can see he is coming around. Just based on ball he killed off Buerhle yesterday I’d say he is going to go white hot for the next 25 games.
His fielding has the occasional gaffe that makes people think he is a worst fielder than he is. The guy also makes additional mistakes because he can reach balls typical right fielders let bounce in front of them.
As far as this upcoming series I am just glad the Diamondbacks are missing Gio and Strasburg. Unfortunately for the Nats they do have to face our ace Joe Saunders.

I mean, the AL pitching can’t be THAT much better than NL pitchers. I don’t even know who’s hitting after him in the lineup.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Almost on par with the Expos.
I know. It’s bad.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:36 PM
In terms of absolute numbers, sure. But rugby went from practically zero 10 years ago to being called the fastest growing sport in the country.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Pujols power outage shouldn’t bother people that much. Those things happen. Look at Giancarlo Stanton’s start to the year. His 14:6 K:BB ratio on the other hand? That’s a concern.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Every time I read or hear DBacks, I read or hear d-bags. Seems appropriate given that Bryce Harper is mentioned.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Not since 2001, his rookie season, has Albert struck out more times than he’s walked.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:39 PM
Given the fact that the pitching in the AL is considered better than the NL, they probably should be bothered.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:41 PM

let’s do this: which will be sponsored by high school associations first? lacrosse. rugby’s too rough
May 1st, 2012 at 12:43 PM
My oldest son has never played lacrosse but is now on his college club team (he was recruited to play football but blew the knee).
My youngest doesn’t want to be like his older brother, he wants to be his older brother. Needless to say, I’m about to make a heavy investment in lax equipment.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:43 PM
I wish my hometown had lacrosse when I was growing up. I think I would have enjoyed the hell out of that.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:44 PM

Given the current climate regarding head injuries, and in light of the Gladwell interview linked above, do you think football will be dropped by high schools? Because besides public acceptance, there’s not much difference between rugby and football.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:46 PM
Maybe if he still went by Mike, this wouldn’t have happened.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Yes. 23 games is a perfectly acceptable time to panic. Here’s Albert’s career numbers against current AL staffs:
NYY: .244/.277/.467
CWS: .414/.528/.759
DET: .289/.471/.526
KC: .364/.470/.600
BOS: .275/.383/.475
TB: .300/.364/.700
TEX: .188/.325/.344
BAL: .147/.237/.235
SEA: .238/.238/.619
CLE: .338/.412/.473
TOR: .357/.400/.571
OAK: .400/.444/.760
LAA: .269/.406/.615
He’s hitting .297/.385/.597 against the entire league’s pitching staff as a whole. Panic in July if he keeps this up.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:49 PM

so you are supporting my position, right?

Buchholz to the bullpen! Anyone?
Make it so, number one.
The Sawx are back at .500. It appears the sun is finally shining in Red Sox Nation. The ‘pen is struggling, so Buchholz could be an asset. But he also can’t make eight other guys pitch better…
May 1st, 2012 at 12:51 PM
I did my addition/division wrong. His cumulative slugging is actually .613. Still, not time to worry about Alberta.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:51 PM
srod, the bosox will outhit any pitching problems for a solid third wild card slot
May 1st, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I don’t think football is going anywhere anytime soon. Therefore, I don’t see how rugby can be deemed too violent.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Football is already expensive.
Changes b/c of the head injury thing will add cost (better helmets, better medical care, insurance, etc). Cost will drive football away from some of the smaller schools.
I think at some point soon (< 15 years) you will see the smaller HS programs start dropping (in GA, I'd say A and AA). Some of the private schools in these classifications currently don't have football.
States and counties will be under pressure to continue programs at smaller public schools, but I think you'll see some consolidation (pooling kids from multiple schools) to reduce cost.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:54 PM
I’ll eat my hat if David Ortiz keeps this pace up. 36 year old fatasses don’t maintain this kind of pace. Especially a .726 SLG. The Red Sox need bullpen help. Whether it comes internally or externally, they need it.
Longoria going down is certainly going to help them in that division though.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Not a cycle though so who cares?

May 1st, 2012 at 12:55 PM
As far as this upcoming series I am just glad the Diamondbacks are missing Gio and Strasburg. Unfortunately for the Nats they do have to face our ace Joe Saunders.
Gio has been flat out dealing so far. His curve has serious bite, and his fastball has consistently been 92-94 with movement.
Saunders is off to a great start as well. Looking forward to more pitchers’ duels this week in Nationals’ Park/Field/Yards/Grounds/whatever. After the DBacks leave, the Phighting Phils come in for a series.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:56 PM
bear, my only point was that lacrosse will be more accepted than rugby, hence the question regarding the HS sponsorship. football and rugby can be equaly violent, but because football is becoming more controversial, i don’t see how high schools could add another violent sport
tho, have you seen some of those lacrosse brawls? so Chazzy
May 1st, 2012 at 12:57 PM
srod, the bosox will outhit any pitching problems for a solid third wild card slot
Aviles has been a nice pickup for them. As much as I dislike Pedroia, he’s a threat every night at the plate. Both those guys have given the team offense. And, the big man (Ortiz) seems to hit a tater every game these days.
The AL East is gonna be a dogfight as usual. I would love to see Balimer and Toronto make it a 5-team “cage match” all season.
May 1st, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Tazawa, Albers, Atchison
Cook, Bailey, Melancon, Hill
Morales, Padilla, Aceves
That’s the pen. Just need them to pitch like they can. No one is coming cheap enough who is better than those last 3, so I don’t see it.
May 1st, 2012 at 1:00 PM
This talk needs to stop. He’s a young pitcher signed long-term, with a ton of potential and good secondary offerings. I don’t think you sacrifice him long term to let Cook remind the world why he could only get a minor league contract this year.
He came up short late in the game, but had his moments. Put him DL if you have to, or skip a turn, but if he’s too bad for the rotation, you think he’ll help out the pen?
May 1st, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Good luck with that bullpen then. You’ll be enjoying a lot of blown leads.
May 1st, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Says the guy with freddy garcia..
May 1st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
I see your point. What’s interesting is that rugby is really growing at the youth level, which is played as touch, with no tackling. If this continues to grow, and kids want to keep playing when they get older, do you start touch rugby at the HS level, or do you get a push for *gasp* tackle rugby?
May 1st, 2012 at 1:04 PM
The hell is wrong with you people?
May 1st, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Really? Never heard of it around here.
May 1st, 2012 at 1:11 PM
The hell is wrong with you people?
cj, lemme ‘splain…please.
The guy is a stone gamer. Plays hurt. Hangs in on the double play pivot. Hits the ball hard seemingly every at bat. I’d take him right now for Danny Espinosa straight up. He’d look good hitting third for my Nats (it will never happen, I know).
He has the kind of swagger you want in a player on your favorite team. When he is the opponent, that same swagger (coupled with his success) makes him easy to dislike.
Now, is that really so outlandish?
May 1st, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Probably, I just don’t think there’s much flexibility, and a lot of above-average and no lockdown guys. Tazawa is the only one that can move freely b/w ML and AAA, I think. Alex Wilson is good but not a savior, and Bard had some tough times last year, and looks good as a starter so far.
I think at this point you have to give it 6 weeks to see what you have. The staff is pretty set, and you have Cook as a WC, and DiceK back in a month if you need a starter.
May 1st, 2012 at 1:13 PM

Ahhh. Yes. The old Kenny Lofton for Eddie Taubensee trade. I longingly remember the days of when the Indians used to rip teams off.
Looks to find Ubaldo Jiminez on the Indians roster and realizes that those days are over… wayyyyy over.

Really, can’t baseball fans from Milwaukee have anything? We can’t compete with big-market teams. We’ll never sign a marquee free agent. We’ll never get a fat TV contract. We’re happy to win a damn playoff series once every 30 years. Give us the damn MVP and piss off, hey? Oh, he hit a few balls hard, he must be on roids… Go fuck yourself, I said with a raised eyebrow.
