Jacksonville Jaguars Invite Kicker Long Ding To Camp
The Jacksonville Jaguars are doing work this offseason when it comes to their special teams, probably figuring that they will be punting the ball or settling for field goal attempts frequently. First, they selected punter Bryan Anger in the third round, hoping his talent will augment QB Blaine Gabbert’s skills.
Then, yesterday, with Josh Scobee refusing to sign his franchise tender, they invited a kicker by the name of Long Ding to camp. Ding is out of tiny Norwich University. Ding is a Chinese national who is on Twitter at @kickinglong and has his own website at kicking long.com. We eagerly await Jason Whitlock’s breakdown of his game.
If Ding can make a roster, he will immediately join the list of best international NFL kicker names, along with Donald Igwebuike, Ali Haji-Sheikh, Bjorn Nittmo, and Garo Yepremian. [photo via kickinglong.com]

Are you gonna write up draft grades?
April 30th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
this is weak. funny would be dong, this is not that

I’m also curious as to how the post-draft coverage will work today. Just now reading about who the Bears selected on Friday and over the weekend.
Like the Alshon Jeffrey pick. Not sure about the safety from the Beavers. Rounds 4-7 are where I really need to help figuring out how well the Bears (and other teams) did.

Are we getting Game of Thrones and Mad Men posts today or did those get shot down by the “self-righteous” commenters?

the browns drafted a siege tower to bring to a gunfight. god damned spetagenarian quarterback…what, sonny jurgensen would’ve been a reach?

Jaguars sign punter Jack Mehoff to compete for a spot on the roster.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Are you gonna write up draft grades?
no, I’m working on a lighter post evaluating each team’s draft, on the principal that everyone does grades and I don’t know what I’m talking about. Also, have a potential post looking at Mel Kiper’s grades from 2007 to 2009 now that those draft classes are in their prime.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Brownies should have drafted Randall or some other WR in the 2nd. Rounds 2 and 3 were trash for them.

no way…that tackle they got from cal is AWESOME. no more pashos/cousins/whomever false starting and getting their asses kicked like whoa.

and for the record… i support the redskins taking cousins.
after watching the list of QBs run through this organization for the last 20 years, the more prospects the better.

Lisk, I know this is unsolicited, but here’s something that’s been on my mind. This year, there were guys given some first round grades like Massie, Randle, etc that slipped 30+ picks. Now, the teams that pick these sliders get “great value” but it seems if EVERY team passed on them, then there was some red flag or misconception on the player’s real value. I’m curious how these players have panned out, if the selecting team did get “great value” or if the red flag was justified. I think this is at the core of the fans/internet era/draft grades disconnect. Also, with the Gannett purchase, have you inquired about anybody in the org with all-22 film?
April 30th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
sc, i like jeffrey, and the beaver db. he’s physically one of the best dbs available, but he didn;t play all last year so that’s good for free-falling. he’s intriguing. two corners and a troubled TE to close it out?
bad. so, imo, which i know you value, emery was 3 for 6, but with a great free agent offseason, he’s been impressive. now he can hire his own scouts and top personnel guys, as he was using angelo’s crew for this
April 30th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
I liked the Browns pick for the RT but I would have liked to see them be aggressive to move up and get another late 2nd to get Randle.
In the SAT eve press conference, Heckert sounded quite comfortable in waiting to get his guy on day 3 and ignoring WR on days 1-2.
In reality, CB and WR will be where the Browns hit up 1-2 next year. They had 5 gaping holes and filled 3 of them with their first 3 picks.

Not likely. Remember: commenters don’t matter. We’re 0.01% of the people who come to this blog.

I’m OK with what Phil did, vez. The Beaver DB had health problems throughout college, not just last year. I read Zaidman and JD’s evaluations of the kid and they said his freshman year he had a busted shoulder and some wrist issues. With Major Wright and Chris Conte already having injuries concerns, I don’t know if taking another safety with a similar medical history was wise. They did say he’s a really good tackler though so that’s a plus. He can also contribute on special teams.
I really like the Jeffrey selections. His opposite Marshall with Agent Orange in the slot makes for a good package for Jay.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
angry, still would have liked to see hightower, decastro, rieff, jones, or wright in the first round. was so disappointed with the boise pick

I have some thoughts on this, don’t know if I’ll write it, and I’d love to look into it in detail if I had reliable info on who was ranked highest and fell.
I think that the draftniks are pretty good at identifying the reaches by other teams. On the other hand, as you note, if a player drops a couple of rounds, and every team is passing and several have selected players at the same position, it’s my guess that the draftnik is wrong and is the one “reaching” and less likely that every team is wrong.

oh, he’s big alright. wait until he starts firing down that kraut on a regular basis. the mofo will look like alge crumpler

I really need to proofread my stuff before hitting submit.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
that’s been his MO all along. first year with heckert, he went after the secondary, last year the DL, this year, OL and the running game…next year, he’ll DEF go after a WR and probably go CB and LB heavy. he was saying they drafted for need on offense but also depth on defense.
can’t solve every problem in one draft…tho some activity in free agency would’ve been nice if we’re trotting out that crap platter of WR’s again.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
also…i PRAY that weeden won’t preclude the browns from drafting barkley if they’re in position next year…
April 30th, 2012 at 11:21 AM

which is why i picked wright in the commenter draft, nice to see him go one pick later. did anyone track the commenter draft this year? i know someone has more time on their hands than i do
April 30th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
/slams head onto desk
The only piece of info I picked up from the Bears draft is that Emery doesn’t give a fuck about game film. Bring it in the combine and he’ll draft your (fat) ass.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
sg, he was working from angelo’s player personnel staff. he can hire his own now, for the future
April 30th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
this is about jeffrey? his tape is way better than his combine numbers. his combine blew from having to lose weight so scouts didn’t giggle at his titties.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Nope, we’ll suck all year, close by beating the Broncos or Steelers third-stringers, knocking ourselves 7 picks further down the list…as is tradition.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:26 AM

April 30th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
I read just the opposite this weekend since he didn’t have a great final season. And the kid from Oregon State definitely fits my assessment.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
look, i think alshon is filthy. but from what i know about him he could easily be the next mike williams.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
I’m not too concerned with the whole fat thing for Jeffrey. Let’s see how he shows up to training camp before we start alerting all the Vienna Beef places in the city to limit his intake.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Would agree on Rieff if he could be a LT. But many projects have him as a RT or G.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
there’s merit to that, but SC losing their RB and having a volatile QB situation probably had a lot to do with that too.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
since he didn’t have a great final season.
jeffrey is the only thing that kept spurrier from pulling garcia’s fatass at times.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Yeah, I’m sure that was a factor. I just read a couple of pieces that speculated Emery was impressed that Jeffrey lost weight before the combine which was a worrisome trend to me. Of course he’s going to lose weight for the NFL beauty pageant. Is he going to keep it off?
Not to mention I keep hearing all this shit about him having work ethic issues ala Mike Williams. DO. NOT. WANT.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
as someone who pores over the draft, it’s funny reading articles written by guys where you can tell they just looked at the first google result and went with it.
for example…tony grossi saying mitchell schwartz “is a finesse blocker” when every single scouting report ive read on him talks about nastiness and a mean streak. and then i watched all of schwartz’ snaps against USC, stanford and nevada and it further invalidated grossi’s “finesse” comment.
i assume this practice is rampant amongst the lazy journos.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
SG – he’s just going to be one of those guys that demands special management if you want to get the most out of him. he’s big, strong and has sick hands, but (from what i hear from SoCar fans) his weight is all over the place and he has that “wide receiver” mentality.
April 30th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
jeffrey puts the “wide” in wide receiver.

spence i saw a documentry last night on sundance channel about The Funk Bros, the guys who played behind many many Motown hits. lots of great stories and they had modern musicians like ben harper, joan osborne and bootsy collins singing hits while the guys played live behind them
didn’t know bootsy was so normal, tall, and has a great voice
