The Browns Look to Trade Colt McCoy as They Commit to Brandon Weeden
Cleveland needed an offensive face lift after last season, when they finished 30th in the league in points scored, and only topped 20 points once (week 2 against Indianapolis). They lacked big-play ability and skill players.
Colt McCoy’s numbers are similar to Sam Bradford at this point in his career, another young quarterback playing with a deficient supporting cast. Bradford was the #1 pick, and the Rams are committed to moving forward with him. McCoy, on the other hand, must now be seen as part of the problem and not the solution.
The Browns added Trent Richardson early in the draft, and if he is as good as advertised, will have an immediate impact on the offense. However, as teams adapt to Richardson, the Browns will need to stretch the field. With the 22nd pick, they opted to select a passer they think can do that, Brandon Weeden from Oklahoma State.
It’s going to either be a crazy move, or show that the Browns are crazy like a fox. Weeden will turn 29 years old in October. Quarterbacks younger than Weeden started 48.4% of all games last year, and that number will rise in 2012 as Luck, Griffin and Tannehill also enter the league, and other draft picks like Jake Locker also will likely see action. I went through the age concerns with Weeden after the Senior Bowl, and the main concern is this – he’s right at peak age and until now has been compared to players much younger.
He better be good right away. I’m not crazy about the selection where they made it, but that’s because of supply and demand at that point. I don’t think anyone else was jumping into the first round to take Weeden, and they could have gone back by accepting an offer for a mid-round pick. If Weeden’s age is a concern for teams, any team where he is not going to project as a starter is likely out until the price becomes palatable for a backup. They aren’t going to take him to develop and have him start at age 31. Who is that in this draft, besides the Browns, after Miami took Tannehill?
That said, the salary structure does make taking Weeden in the first round more appealing than the second round. The Browns get four years of Weeden if he is a first round pick at a discounted rate. He’s going to make substantially less than guys who have signed free agent deals recently like Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn, Kevin Kolb, or Alex Smith. If he can start right away, the Browns have a starter at ages 29 to 32 who comes at a major discount. We should know fairly quickly if this pick is worth it. If he can’t beat out McCoy by opening day, it is not a good pick.
It’s something the Browns seem to be anticipating will happen. The word is they are already shopping Colt McCoy, and GM Tom Heckert said that “[i]t’s something we’ll talk about tonight and tomorrow.” There is no one that will be clamoring for McCoy for anymore than a backup price of a mid-round pick, so it would be moving him because they think it will be an issue and they don’t want McCoy as a backup after drafting Weeden. Reportedly, the Browns have already been in talks with the Packers, who need a reserve to backup up Rodgers after losing Flynn.

I’ll be surprised if they get better than a 6th rounder for him.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
re pic: that’s a textbook baseball throwing motion in i’ve ever seen one.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Nice write-up Lisk. This is a real rare situation with little to compare. Jason would you say he’s better than Tannehill?
He better be good right away
I’d say this is the same with every first round pick, except Tannehill, Luck & RG3).
April 27th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
OT
–Lisk – Any word on Aaron Scales who switched from Missouri to Cleveland State for hoops?
End OT
April 27th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
agreed.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
he’s right at peak age and until now has been compared to players much younger.
yes, but in terms of playing experience, he has the same or even less than those players he’s being compared to because he was away from football for those years he played professional baseball.

April 27th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
and the browns trading picks to move up one. lisk, what did you think of that? only reason is that browns thought vikes were going to take him, no?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
McCoy would be an upgrade over almost all current backups. Someone will want him.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Colt would be awesome to have in Green Bay. Give him the chance to throw a pass over twenty yards on a consistent basis to good wideouts.
Hopefully he can get back to the numbers he was able to produce as a rookie.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Seahags by far the worst.
no. worried about Bucs.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
If QB is the most important position in football and this pick gives you 5-7 years of stability there with good/very good production, it’s a bold, great pick. Like all other 1st round picks, if he’s not a game changing talent, it’s wasted.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
There were only 2 good QB’s in this draft. Browns would have been better off drafting pieces, continuing to suck as everyone has come to expect, then drafting Barkley. This is going to be a disaster. Their moron coach will be bouncing back and forth between Weeden and Seneca Wallace by week 3.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
I’m not Lisk but I bet Tampa was calling Minnesota.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
The flying W is bad for your elbow and shoulder.
playing PGA Pro-Ams is bad for your QB winning percentage.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
No…Vikings were going to trade with someone else (Bucs?)…who would have then taken Richardson.
In theory.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I read about that a few years ago and the story used examples of oft-injured pitchers and that W shape. Jeremy Bonderman comes to mind.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
I agree, so isn’t the Dolphins taking Tannehill at 8 much worse than the Browns taking Weeden at 22?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Seahags by far the worst.
these were publicized as Emery’s options
The seven players on the list:
Luke Kuechly, LB – he’s tough, competitive, he was productive in college, no injury concerns. There’s some question about whether the Bears would have eliminated him simply because he’s so unlikely to still be on the board.
Stephon Gilmore, CB – he’s competitive, durable, and he was also productive
Riley Reiff, OT – also tough and competitive. He was also durable. You might ask for better measurables and there was one odd off the field incident with a police chase.
Courtney Upshaw, DE – Upshaw has some mild character concerns and apparently he might not be the sharpest knife in drawer. His measurables are average. But he’s tough, competitive and a hard worker and its hard to argue with his production.
Melvin Ingram, DE – playmaker with good production and average measurables. Similar to Kuechly, he may not be on the list because the Bears may figure him to be long gone.
Chandler Jones, DE – tough with good production. Maybe some durability concerns.
Dont’a Hightower, LB – tough, competitive and instinctive, some durability concerns.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
I’d wager that Weeden’s best season will be better than Barkeley’s best season.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
That someone would trade with the VIkings to leapfrog the Browns (maybe Rams, Jets, whomever). Don’t think its really as big a deal as people are making…didn’t they give up a 4th and 7th? That’s really nothing.
This should be a fun disaster to watch unfold. I’m curious as to why Cleveland didn’t just suck it up one more year and blow ass when the potential QBs in round 1 next year are all at least as good as Weeden (Barkley, Bray, Wilson) and are SEVEN YEARS younger.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
Absolutely, especially considering the Browns had already picked “their guy” in Richardson. Miami is as much of a disaster as Cleveland, just with better weather.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
so, bucs? thanks y’all
anyway, that lst of seven is missing someone important, and includes two or threee i would have rather seen them take
anyone track the commenter draft performance? my guy (wright) went one pick later if that passes for success
April 27th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Yeah I would much rather had Chad Pennington wannabe Kellen Moore in the late rounds than Chris Weinke wannabe Weeden in the first round.
/Do the browns really want old man Weeden with his finger on the button?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Atlanta gave up a 7th for Asante Samuel.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Jets needs another QB.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Well, it was hard for any team to give up less.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
I foolishly bought the Bondo 2006 WS jersey instead of a Verlander.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Colt was awful as a rookie.
There is such a huge blind spot related to Colt. He sucks. Am I on crazy pills?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
The flying W is bad for your elbow and shoulder.
With first hand knowledge, that can give you lots of power but will destroy the front of your shoulder sooner or later.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
I think the main difference between Weeden and Tannehill is that with Tannehill you can wait a year, maybe two, and then roll him out. You can’t really do that with Weeden. He better be able to play from day 1. Now, the Dolphins probably won’t do that and Tannehill will suck, but that option at least exists for him.
I really think people are underselling the impact of Weeden’s age on his collegiate success. He’s in the beginning of his QBing prime against guys not even approaching theirs. That matters.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Kirk Cousins.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
If the Rams don’t use 2 of the next 3 picks on the OL(they have 3 of the top 15 15 in the 2nd) they might has be ready to draft a QB next year.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
He’s a career backup.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
I think he’ll be in midnight green, not Jets green.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Lulz. Weedon has hit his peak. He is lucky it was in college, where he was a man playing among boys essentially. He will improve somewhat, but has a very, very low ceiling.
Barkley may very well be the #1 overall pick next year. He has better measurables already and is 7 years younger.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
I saw Butters say something similar on the Twitter machine last night but I feel it needs to be repeated here. The Seahawks got better after they stopped letting Mike Holmgren make personnel decisions. This is another one in a long line of questionable decisions made by the Walrus. Is he fit to be a mainstay in personnel in the NFL anymore?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
I’m not Lisk but I bet Tampa was calling Minnesota.
Here’s the thing. Tampa must not have been offering much, if anything to move up. Cleveland gave up a 4th, 6th and 7th, right? That’s peanuts in trade value. If Tampa offers a 4th, 5th and 6th, they get it. Which is still way below the old chart for moving up.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
You’re lying. It was a Mike Maroth jersey.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Absolutely, yes.
Again, I would have taken Blackmon with the first Browns pick, Martin with the second, and Weeden in the second. But I understand why they did what they did.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
I read about that a few years ago and the story used examples of oft-injured pitchers and that W shape.
it’s a teaching concept used to keep unnecessary stress off the elbow by keeping it “up.” the problem is that it needs to be taught with other mechanics or it’s useless and/or harmful.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
The irony in Spence not liking Weed(en).
April 27th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Is Tannehill an upgrade over Matt Moore? I say no. Plus they have huge holes at OL and WR, and they need another pass rusher. Terrible pick.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
I wonder if Tampa decided against giving up a bunch of picks for Richardson when they knew they could give up far less to get Martin.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
$50.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
They should get 3 of these 5: OC Konz, OT Adams, OL Glenn, WR Randle, WR Jeffery and CB Jenkins.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
This.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
He should just give Justin Blackmon his salary for the 3 years he’ll be in the NFL.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
I don’t think this is going to work out, mostly because it involves the Browns.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
So are you saying that there was another team in the mix? Or that Minnesota just lied to Cleveland and stole a handful of picks?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
…and he won’t be on the Browns.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
/apparently I can’t count
April 27th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
This pick still makes more sense than what the Bears did. Put that pigeon feather in your cap, Cleveland.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Just looking at photo of Weeden. They actually had official “Pro Day” shirts?
good lord.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
He was on a local sports show the other day talking about how much interest the Eagles had been showing in him.
//Drew Stanton 2.0
April 27th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Yeah, the Browns being terrible falls on Colt’s shoulders…
April 27th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Why the hell didn’t the Bears pick a guard or tackle?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Why do we think the Bears made a stupid pick? Because he’s a white guy from Boise?
The dude graded out well on everyone’s board and was invited to NYC. It’s not like this is a surprise.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Again, I would have taken Blackmon with the first Browns pick
made special by….weeden
/full squared circle
April 27th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
At least you didn’t draft a guy who nearly gave up on his way to the podium.
/looks at empty Jets bandwagon
April 27th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Because he’s the perfect fit for a defensive scheme the Bears don’t play.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I don’t think this is going to work out, mostly because it involves the Browns.
/science
So are you saying that there was another team in the mix? Or that Minnesota just lied to Cleveland and stole a handful of picks?
I don’t think there was another team in the mix that Minnesota would trade down with and still get their guy. Whether Tampa actually made a paltry offer or it was all just a lie leaked to get the trade, I don’t know. But if there was a serious push to trade up, a 4th, 6th and 7th wouldn’t have held it off.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
He has better measurables already and is 7 years younger.
What measurables outside age? Not arm strength for sure. Weeden is taller, just as fast & more athletic.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
This is good news for McCoy. Being the backup for one of about 25 other teams would be a better option than starting for Browns.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Because they have greater needs than DLine. o-line,WR, safety, cb, linebacker.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Why the hell didn’t the Bears pick a guard or tackle?
or hightower or wright or jones? fuck’s sake that was a letdown. howdy doody may be a star someday–hey urlacher’s college competition wasn’t all that great–but the folks left on the board at that time were so much more exciting and at least in CFB, battle-tested and proven
April 27th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
The dude graded out well on everyone’s board and was invited to NYC. It’s not like this is a surprise.
those grades were for a different d
April 27th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Browns have been improving in the draft lately.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Eagles are probably gonna bail on Vick after this year unless he improves a lot. Taking Cousins is just a safety move.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Unless Phil Emery plans on Lovie Smith not being his coach next year and subsequently hiring a staff that employs a 3-4 defense, his pick was a major head scratcher.
I never saw the kid play, I’ll admit that. But everything I’m reading this morning tells me he’s a OLB/DE hybrid. He also had the lowest of any DL prospect in bench reps at the combine. He’s a speed rusher, one that can probably be handled by a good blocking TE.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
oops, sorry sc
April 27th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
hope it works out…would’ve preferred a WR, but i guess if they can get jeffrey*, it’s all good. if not…yeesh.
*when the world slips you a jeffrey, stroke the furry wall
April 27th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Why do we think the Bears made a stupid pick? Because he’s a white guy from Boise?
I think my problem with the pick was that there were guys even at that position they should probably have picked before the white kid from Boise.
Hey, you guys heard Dallas got Claiborne, right? That’s pretty cool.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
So let me get this straight… you are hoping he comes to GB, and is needed to play a season as a starter? Did I miss the joke, or do you just think that McCoy is an upgrade over Rodgers?
“I hope he comes to GB and does nothing but hand off the ball in 4th quarters of GB blowouts”
April 27th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
I love day after draft “Grades.” Let’s give the Colts an A for drafting Andrew Luck. Way to get the card to the podium on time.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Browns have been improving in the draft lately.
(pours a prarie fire in my eyes)
April 27th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
You’ve gotta be happy with Jerrah this morning. What’d they give up again? A 3rd round pick to move up there? Mo is instantly the best defensive back on Dallas’ roster.
Who’s the last DB they took that high? Newman?
April 27th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Joffrey > Jeffrey
April 27th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
when the world slips you a joffrey, unfortunately, there’s no cure for being a cunt.
/bronn’d
April 27th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
The Lions will draft a higher DB tonight. Or Mike Adams. He’s pretty high and retarded too.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Of course not. A competent back-up is a good thing to have.
I want to see how well Colt will do with people behind him. If he flounders, well he was worth the risk of a mid-level draft choice.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
likewise…unfortunately, looks like he won’t get his shot here.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Yeah, I get that. I just think he’s a little better that he’s being portrayed.
Hell, at least the Bears didn’t let their two chief rivals snag great value-pick position players because they didn’t want to make a move up the board. Fucking Ravens.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Bronn is severely underrated on most draft boards. Huge value pick, lots of upside…provided he has a lucrative contract, of course.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Okay… so you just don’t mean the part about putting up 1600 yards this year. Got it.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
SC: Dallas gave up a 2nd rounder.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Hell, at least the Bears didn’t let their two chief rivals snag great value-pick position players because they didn’t want to make a move up the board. Fucking Ravens.
they got an extra fourth, right? They’ve got 4 picks left below 100. They have a lot of holes to fill, though.
The thing with Decastro, though. Guards just aren’t that valuable. It is what it is. You can’t trade up for a guard. There’s lots of guards. And I’ll tell you something else. Decastro is going to get pushed around, just like Pouncey does.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Sorry, I thought it was implied that he’d be doing this when games are out of reach. To clarify, I want to see if Colt can make the throws during preseason games and if games are out of reach.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Dallas is waving Mike Jenkins around..
April 27th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
SC: Dallas gave up a 2nd rounder.
I’m elated with the move. That’s a paltry cost. If anybody is bored, go read this Dallas fan site where they eavesdropped on other fan sites while Dallas was doing the deal. It’s pretty funny, especially the Tampa stuff.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
the real draft story we’re all missing is how RGIII’s ACL was the big loser last night.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Dallas is waving Mike Jenkins around..
good player. Not even joking. Willing to tackle, but easily injured. I’d be happy if they kept him, although he needs to be paid next year.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
CG — they did get an extra fourth.
Ravens have a lot of holes, though. Guard is a huge one with Grubbs gone. So you let Pittsburgh grab a top 10 talent at a need position, New England trade up to get the LB you wanted, and then watch Cincy take the other OL you targeted. At that point moving back was the right call, especially after the last four teams drafted terribly. But Baltimore should have been aggressive is going after a guy like DeCastro, who filled a giant need and was hugely undervalued even at the 20 spot.
I get your point about guards being what they are – although I disagree he’ll get pushed around. The dude is tough.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Going from the shittiest of shit sandwiches at the OG spot the Steelers have to somebody with even a little talent without having to give up any other picks has me on a high that not even Dirt can knock me down from.
April 27th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Still a great deal. I was hoping Phil would look to trade ahead of Arizona looking at how things shook out things morning. The only offensive player I wanted in the first round that was reasonable was Michael Floyd. Otherwise, I wanted secondary help on defense or a defensive lineman (not from Potato State Technical College).
April 27th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
SC: Dallas gave up a 2nd rounder.
I’m elated with the move.
i hate that the cowfags jumped up and got claiborne. i think he’s legit.

no, no he wasn’t. And they (the Ravens) like earthmoving, powerhouse guards. Not skilled tacticians who can’t move Hampton one inch. Glenn would have been good. Zeitler would not have.

So Reiff is a Lion now, eh? Why do the Bears’ division rivals keep selecting my favorite Hawkeyes…

Who do we think gets Fat Alshon?
April 27th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
although I disagree he’ll get pushed around. The dude is tough.
I think I read 35 scouting reports on DeCastro. He couldn’t move the biggest and most powerful opponents, even though he hit them with perfect form.
April 27th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
I still think they snake Glenn with the third pick of the second round.

I’m just peeved that DAL gave up #45. They could’ve used that on a good player to immediately slot in at OL/DL.
Once again they’re going to ignore their pass rush and rely on Tony Romo to work his dark wizardry against defenses to complete passes while running for his fucking life.

I’m just peeved that DAL gave up #45.
you’re being stupid. They won the fucking draft. I assure you of that. And this kid will come in under contract for half a decade, cheaply. And return kicks.
Get on board. It’s awesome.

Raiders have a 5th rounder they’d like to offer…get Jerry on the phone.
April 27th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Thats really good. Seahawks and Brownies the best.
A phone? Hmm, that does sound like quite the invention. So people would use this “phone” to text mistresses and send dong pictures to women you work with?

I’ll be on board when Anthony Spencer suddenly materializes.

I want to like the Weeden pick. I really, really want to, but:
Name me the BEST NFL QB to come from the Big 12 in the last 10 years.
After you’ve struggled with that request for 10 minutes, realize what little the Defense Optional League (B12) has done for college QB’s.
/Sigh

not enough, I don’t think, especially because you can franchise him for the next year, if you want. But this year, he costs a little more than a million per. Dirt cheap for a corner who can play pretty well. He might trade if he gets extended and some $$.
I think Dallas should keep him, personally.

you should be on board when you’re no longer counting on Gerald fucking Sensabough to cover somebody, and Spencer has his hand down in a 4/2/5 formation with this kid playing center field, and tight ends getting jammed in the mouth by somebody other than your best pass rusher.

Josh Freeman?

but they could have gotten him in round 2, or by using the same pile of bullshit they traded to get richardson, plus their 2, to trade up into the late 1st.

I really can’t tell. I just recognize the glasses. I thought at first, it was the boardroom sketch at globo-chem, but I think he’s on a couch.
I can pull out the DVD’s, I guess.
