The Alleged Source For the Saints/Mickey Loomis Spying Story is a Former Sound and Electrical Worker
Lee Zurik of Fox 8 in New Orleans is reporting that Tim Landry is the alleged source for the allegations of listening to opposing coaches by Mickey Loomis. Zurik’s allegations are unconfirmed. Landry is a former sound and electrical worker for the Saints. According to Zurik’s report, Landry was fired in 2007 by the Saints after being accused of using team equipment for non-team events.
More interesting is how the station says that the story came about. Landry did not come forward, but was allegedly tracked down by ESPN’s John Barr as part of a sweeping investigation of people tied to the Saints organization.
Sources say ESPN’s investigation of the Saints started with phone calls from reporter John Barr to a number of people with current and former ties to the Saints. Former WWL radio reporter Kenny Wilkerson confirms to FOX 8 News that Barr called him, looking for information on Sean Payton. Wilkerson tells us he gave Barr phone numbers for a number of people, including Tim Landry.
Mickey Loomis strenuously objected to the allegations that he used listening devices to monitor opposing teams again yesterday. According to the Fox 8 story, there are 2 to 3 sources including Landry, and none provided any evidence other than their own statements. [Fox 8 Live]

Well, what evidence would they have other than their statements? Pictures of Loomis listening into a device? Recordings they made while listening in on Loomis listening in on the other team? Loomis holding a sign saying, “Hey, I am listening to the opposing team’s chatter.”

Maybe the sound and electrical engineer was the one who actually installed the equipment? I dunno, just an educated guess.

I’m leaving straight from work to drive to NC tonight. I would kill for a half day right now.

As a Saints fan, I should also point out that Fox 8 is owned by Tom Benson. Not saying that mods the story suspect, just wanted to come clean on that.

i’m just surprised any team would try any type of recording of other teams after Spygate…
however, if teams continued after 2007 you’d have to think they were practicing it well before then to think they can get away with it… unless they were fucking stupid to think of it as a brand new idea after the pats got caught.

I get a half day today but have to spend the free half driving to the in-laws for a weekend visit. Damn it. Double damn it because we are supposed to get some kick ass storms tonight and that is one of my favorite parts of spring.

I think that was actually mentioned in the story.
Regardless this reeks of an ESPN witch hunt and while I’m not a Saints fan, I hope the Saints sue the piss out of the network for this if its not true.

What’s this shit rumor floating around about the Packers kicking the tires on a trade for Colt McCoy?
April 27th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
ESPN can get away with witch hunts against college teams, similar to the one that they put on Ohio State for several years. It makes it especially good for their business if they can crap on a Big 10 team (BTN) or now other conferences with their own networks.
However, ESPN needs to be careful biting the hand that feeds them, with the NFL. If they are making shit up to get story lines against the Saints (still unsure of this as of yet), Goodell may just flip ESPN the bird during the next TV contract and head to NBC Sports cable network or with his own NFL network for more work, or check out TBS and TNT’s interest.

And that would, again, be just his testimony. I doubt he has a work order for it now, or ever.

Legit question for tech savy folks – is the “listening in” even technologically feasible?
Seems that the coaching communication systems are self-contained and wireless, and NFL Security encrypts the wireless signal on game day. Is there a wired component that can even be tapped into?

The only way that would happen would be if Greg Jennings was on the Browns and Colt McCoy was on the Packers.
/because the Browns are dumb you see.

i see that everyday, thankyouverymuch.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
wireless listening devices have been around for a while.
hell, nixon used a wired recording device in the oval office, not hard to imagine in the day and age of tablets, wifi and bluetooth communications there’s a wireless listening device.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
i see that everyday, thankyouverymuch.
Of course I also question the knowledge of some individual members of the Packers. If Jennings were to be traded, there’s probably at least a 30% chance that JerMichael Finley tweets “Who?” again.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I don’t think they’ve been accused of tapping into the coaches wireless playcalling, etc., system. This was an old-school bug in the locker room where tehy could pick up coaches conversations, strategies, etc.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Short answer? Yes.
Long answer? It’s difficult in a noisy stadium atmosphere such as this to isolate a voice over the din of the crowd, even with great technology. And it sounds like the alleged listening device was hard-wired into Loomis’ suite (accessed via a jack), meaning the signal had to be piped in from somewhere on the field. If it was being transmitted wirelessly – or if he was tapping the opposing coaches mikes (which is really hard to do with encryptions) – he shouldn’t have had to hardwire in. Nor can I figure out how the “switch” would just flip between offensive and defensive feeds.

Spencer you never commented on the baby raccoon video I sent you. I take it that means you hated it?
April 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
From the OTL story:
This sounds like some bullshit. You don’t need power for an earpiece, especially if you’re jacking into a hardwired feed. That’s like plugging your earbuds into your iphone.
I have no idea how you could hard-wire into opposing coaches’ real-time audio feeds for three years without anyone knowing.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
If it’s video of it getting killed in some grizzly fashion please forward to me…raccoons are the worst

Queefland…they bugged the locker room, not the field.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
I have no idea how you could hard-wire into opposing coaches’ real-time audio feeds for three years without anyone knowing.
This is the part I don’t get. You can’t steal the wireless signal from headset to booth because it is encrypted by the NFL (not home team) and thus would be scrambled. Since the headsets are self-contained and battery powered (not hardwiring into them), what hardware were the Saints supposedly tapping into? Is it hardware in the opposing coaches box or something else?
April 27th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Queefland…they bugged the locker room, not the field.
This isn’t what the OTL story said. Stated that Saints tapped into coaches in-game communications between field and booth, i.e. play calls and coaches chatter. Not half-time strategy.
April 27th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
But the coaches aren’t in the locker room calling plays. The OTL article made it seem like he listened to playcalls and strategy the entire game on the field.
And what hard-wired feeds was Loomis tapping into in the locker rooms? There are no feeds!
Maybe I missed that in the story but where did it say it was a locker room feed?

I don’t understand why ESPN didn’t consult a tech expert to see if this was even possible.

I figure it has to be possible. Otherwise, wouldn’t the Saints just say it’s impossible to do what has been claimed and then sue the shit out of everybody.
