I love Kate Beckinsale, but Mila is quickly rising the charts. Wow
April 27th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
TBL, you know how you said that you don’t put the best pic inside the post, but the most interesting? Mila Kunis is not one of those situations where you fuck around with that mindset.

Please, Mila, don’t date that piece of crap.

That’s a perfectly cromulent word.

i had this fucked up dream last night. freaked me out…so, in my dream, i was watching the draft. and my favorite team, a team that’s got a need at every position other than left tackle, took 28-year old brandon weeden in the first round. i mean what kind of limdick organization takes a geriatric QB with a first round pick? chris weinke 2.fucking0, which is fucking great is we want a shot at the next cam newton a decade and a half down the…
…he’s standing right behind me, isn’t he?
April 27th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
Wasn’t that David Simon link in here yesterday?
I still don’t think the Weeden pick was dumb, and I’m a Ravens fan. Dumb is needing a guard and not trading up to get him, watching helplessly as your archrival snags him for nothing.
April 27th, 2012 at 8:51 AM
again…she’s almost as big as kalil was. she goes about six four two twenty, solid, with a great set and relentless motor. moves better than most her size. has trouble opening her hips though* and will be given trouble by smaller, quicker opponents**.

My favorite quote from the draft courtesy of Claiborne
Why do we even put up the facade that some of these kids are going to class while in college?

That mugshot is great.
April 27th, 2012 at 8:53 AM
Is this the same team that traded 3 picks to move up 1 spot and take a guy they probably would have gotten anyway? And if someone did move up to steal him…like you said, they have a need any every position. Claiborne, Blackmon, etc?

so, in my dream, i was watching the draft. and my favorite team, a team that’s got a need at every position other than left tackle, took 28-year old brandon weeden in the first round.
i don’t care they took him. it was house money at 22.
April 27th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
i still don’t have a problem with that…if they really wanted richardson, they didn’t give up much to make sure they got him. but weeden? woof…he’d def have been there tomorrow.

April 27th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Understood the strategy of trading excess picks, but they should have done that today and given up 1 or 2 picks for someone like Worthy, etc. They’re not going to beat the Steelers, Ravens, or even the Bengals for that matter with a RB. All they did yesterday was guarantee that they’ll be the worst team in the division for another 5 years at minimum.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
I have no issue with the Richardson trade. 3 picks that might not impact much, to get a superstar. T-Rich will be the #1 RB in the NFL in 2-3 years. They had picks to burn.
I am not down on Weeden. I agree – I thought they could get him at 37. But if they come away with Randle/Jenkins/Hill at 37, it is completely irrespective.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Trading three picks to move up unnecessarily and draft a RB who will face constant nine-man fronts is dumb. Grabbing an experienced QB to replace the ineffectual Colt McCoy? Not so much. Weeden > Tannehill
April 27th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
St. Louis is doing everything in its power to make sure Sam Bradford never develops with any weapons around him. Poor guy.
Richardson is going to be a beast, though — second best player in the draft (after Luck, of course).
April 27th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
they didn’t do that yesterday…they guaranteed that over a long period of time. sucking that impressively requires years of fine attention to detail and an eye for non-talent.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
I really did like that they didn’t show who was getting the phone calls in the green room(at least on NFLN). I thought the Bucs did well.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Can we all agree it was Matt Kalil’s mom????
I like your enthusiasm for the cougar. I’d just wait a few years on his little sister there in the back.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
sparty via email, and i have to vet this to everyone since it was just so preposterously fucking stupid, was INSISTENT that richardson is an average RB.
nevermind how he’s now cursed by being a brown and his inevitable underwhelming pro career from getting that browns stink on him, but as far as RB prospects go coming out of college, they don’t get much better.
there is seriously zero evidence of richardson sucking. no idea where that idea could come from…insanity.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
Fucking stoked over Claiborne after sleeping on it. I was pretty apoplectic last night when they made the move.

THIS. Does TBL think that he’s the reason this happened? I don’t really care, but will say I preferred the old bowl system, pre-BCS (even if it did screw the 94 Penn State juggernaut).
April 27th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
They’re not going to beat the Steelers, Ravens, or even the Bengals for that matter with a RB. All they did yesterday was guarantee that they’ll be the worst team in the division for another 5 years at minimum.
both the steelers and ravens are getting old, so i’m not convinved they’ll be all that great in 5 years. richardson should be a 3-down bruising RB for an offense that desparately needs to take some pressure of the QB. correct me if i’m wrong, but the browns best offensive season was when thundercock trucking people and i’m pretty sure the same, if not worse, surrounding cast was present then.

I’m still in shock (pleasantly) that not only the Pats not trade out of the 1st, but they traded up. TWICE.
I’m hoping BB realized he coached the shit out of the scrubs he had, and now he knows a few pieces with legitimate talent could get them over the top this year. I hope they use both seconds today, and call it a draft after that.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
I’d love to see video of this. Jerry Rice keeps getting destroyed by Nationwide guys on Tweeter because he plays tourneys, shoots high 80s, and keeps some poor guy trying to earn a living out of the tourney.

See, you went crazy off the bat, so now nobody wants to listen to the rest of it. You could’ve said: in a desperate attempt to get an investigative piece on the Saints on-air, ESPN went with a story based on a single source, a guy that was fired from the team and may have an axe to grind. ESPN should’ve waited to see if they could turn up more sources or information for the story, but they got over-anxious and it’s made them look bad in the process.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
another DE for the texans, when we needed a WR or OL so much worse. fucking idiots.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
With the recent purges, the Steelers are actually getting very young, very quick. All of the skill positions on offense are <30, they are building a young O-line anchored by Pouncey, Gilbert and DeCastro. In total, the current roster only has one offensive player over the age of 30 (Charlie Batch) and 6 on defense, and 3 of those are 31.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
it was really nice of the Devils/Panthers to give us so much extra hawkey after the draft last night, too. Five hole is never a good way to lose a series.

Two, not one of us “bowl fans” were against a plus one, not one. We were against a bloated 8-64 team monstrosity.
Three, being in the same division as the Browns is the gift that just keeps giving.

i’d prefer Semin/Backstrom have strong series, but don’t care as long as the Caps prevail.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Steelers are getting younger quickly. Young at WR and OL. Ben has plenty of time left if he stops letting himself get punished. LB needs depth, but Timmons and Woodley are hardly old. Middle aged in secondary, but Troy worries me I’ll admit. DLine has been addresed with Heyward and Hood and NT will be addressed today without a doubt. Reports of the Steelers aging have been greatly exaggerated.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Everyone said he had first round talent, but red flags. Pete went with talent over character it seems. I think automatically saying this move blows is premature, but I would be weary if I were SEA fans.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
With Childress’s offense no need to worry about Richardson returning kicks. It will be him getting the hand off from Weeden 3 times for 8 yards and punt. But I see the brilliance of Holmgren in this draft. Next year they draft Barkley #1 and have Weeden their as a veteran influence to help him.

April 27th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
the tour doesn’t have a history since it’s a sponsor’s exemption. but when rice pulled out a rangefinder in competition, he should never have been given another one since it’s a legit event and not a pro-am.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
They had to replace Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans. I didn’t watch the draft but was a good WR even available at that spot?
mario williams had already been replaced, and we could get a LB today. i would have been okay with stephen hill or reuben randle, or even decastro. all we take in the first round is DEs and its tiresome.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:24 AM

my point is that the anchors on the defense are getting old… Harrison, Troy, Foote, Keisel, Hamptom, etc.
and once Ray Ray and Ed Reed are done for the Ravens, that team won’t be what it’s been.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:25 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Same problem that happened with Quinn. You took a shitty QB late in the first, but he’s still a “first round QB” so you kind of have to give him a chance to develop. But if you’re sitting in the top 5 again next year (likely), and Barkley/Jones/McGloin are sitting there are you taking another QB in the first round?
April 27th, 2012 at 9:26 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
The annoying part about the NFL draft is how each year fans and media feel increasingly stronger about the moves teams made and didn’t make and about who should’ve traded up for what and who shouldn’t when the fact of the matter remains that no one really has any idea what is a good move and what isn’t beyond the painfully obvious.
My issue is not with having opinions its with having strong convictions on more or less unpredictable gambles.

I found his comments refreshing. He just said what ever player thinks. Do I give a shit if my CB is smart? Nope. Now, I want the QB and OL to be intelligent, sure, but I don’t give a fuck with Claiborne. Dude is a straight up baller.

If the Flyers play like they do in Game 6, then the Devils aren’t going to score. Bryz started to click after he gave up those goals in the first period of Game 5. Still think the Flyers young depth will allow them to overwhelm the Devils. Oh and the best player left in the playoffs is on the Flyers side.

April 27th, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Oh my:
Detroit Tigers slugger Delmon Young was arrested early this morning after he allegedly assaulted a man in front of a Midtown hotel, police sources told The Post.
Cops were called to the hotel around 2:40 a.m. after Young, whose ballclub is in town to play the Yankees tonight, pushed the man to the ground, sources said.
Young, known for his powerhouse arm in the outfield, was “highly intoxicated,” sources said, and had to be taken to the hospital to sober up before being moved to a police precinct.
The victim suffered scratches on his arm and was treated at the scene.
Young, who has had problems controlling his temper in the past, was charged with assault in the third degree and is in custody while awaiting arraignment.

Still think a playoff for CFB is a terrible idea. I think everyone’s in love with the idea of a playoff but hasn’t really seen it through. Ultimately a playoff will only benefit the ‘big time’ programs with extreme depth and a level of talent to go with it.
Ideological media can never get anything right…

Would love to see a remake of The Running Man.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:36 AM
I can’t believe Melvin Ingram fell to 18 (or wherever SD picked). That dude is a fucking beast, and him going behind Coples shocked me. Coples was lazy as fuck in college, and I can handle discipline issues a la DUI, weed or whatever more than I can handle laziness. If you’re lazy when you’re not a millionaire, how will not be lazy when you get paid?

I’ve heard second hand that Neshanic is nice but that’s about it. Royce Brook isn’t very far from where i live and i’m definitely not surprised it’s booked solid, i don’t recall a day this winter (aside from inclement weather) when people weren’t playing there.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Very irrelevant, but having to watch him play in a featured group is brutal. “Line me up, caddy!” Dude needs his hand held for every shot. Find some fucking confidence in yourself, douche.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
For the most part, it worked. BCS detractors hate to admit it, but memorable championship matchups like Ohio State-Miami (2002), USC-Texas (2005) and Auburn-Oregon (2010) would never have been possible pre-BCS. The other undisputed truth: National interest in the sport’s regular season skyrocketed in large part due to the BCS championship race.
Good to see the AQ bullshit is done with. Too bad for teams that moved to geographically bullshit conferences. Other than that, eh. The big boys will still rule.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
I suspect he did, actually. The moment he turned pro I suspect he did what most people do, and he completely shut down in terms of thinking about taking tests and what not. Can’t say it didn’t pay off, either, as he was a top-6 (or 8?) pick.
Good.

Bills fans have to be excited about what they’ve done on the defensive side of the ball the past 2 years via the draft and FA. Sure, they have a QB who sucks and who won’t lead them to anything of note, but they can draft another one next year. That defense should be stout.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:40 AM

Tampa Bay had a helluva draft on paper. They finally get a RB and Barron is a stud safety.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Huskerdawg, buffalo is much improved already and should hopefully get a WR and OL in the next few rounds. I agree that Fitz isnt the one to lead them to a championship but he’ll definitely help them compete for a wildcard spot. It should be interesting. Just have to keep him and Fred Jackson healthy this year. Loving the defensive line.

I have to say…of all of the picks in round one, this is the one that I didn’t quite get. The Poe pick was odd, but not shocking as someone that big and athletic will always tempt NFL folks. The SEA pick is a classic talent-over-character thing, but the Illinois WR just shocked me. I follow CFB on the reg, and I had no clue who the fuck he was.

April 27th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
And it’ll only get worse. Not that I’m overly opposed to this mind you – the world is a better place when traditional powers are winning titles – it’s just a head scratcher to me as to why the smaller schools would want a system like this as it seems to have more negatives than positives for them.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Bruce irvin at west virginia got schooled by a mediocre syracuse offense this year. Pete carroll is a sucker
April 27th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Cordy Glenn, Dre Kirkpatrick to name a couple in this draft. Clearly you haven’t watched SoCar play, because if you had, you wouldn’t have used Ingram as your “all you do is hype the SEC” comment. The kid is outstanding. He played DT, DE, ILB and OLB last year alone for SC. He’s fast as shit and super athletic.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:50 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
South Carolina lost a fuck ton of talent in this draft. Gilmore and Ingram alone will cause their D to take a step back (thank god). Then add losing Fat Alshon as well as their star DC to Southern Miss, and I like UGA’s chances in Columbia on Oct. 6. I just wish I could sit next to Jay V during the game.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Counterargument to the “Richardson will own” crew: his running style may work against 18 and 19 year old kids, but what happens when he tries to run over 275-pound middle LBs and DEs?
April 27th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
No, I saw South Carolina play a few times last year, and their defense was stout. I’m not questioning his “beastness”, it was just a general observation and question.
April 27th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
yeah, too bad they have Glazers running the show and a college coach calling the shots, not to mention they play in a tough division. maybe 6 wins.

April 27th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Ask LSU.
I want to agree, but I can’t. They have a freakish DL (Claiborne is a stud) and now have a great safety and a solid RB to go along with Vincent Jackson as well as adding Carl Nicks. I could see them winning the division next year if Freeman is as good as some say.

It’s one of those things where I’ll reserve my judgment until the season starts. I thought Baalke and Harbaugh did a good job in the draft last year (even better if Kilgore takes over at RG this year).
April 27th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
OK:
23 carries for 89 yards during regular season
20 carries for 96 yards in mythical title game
Not exactly a beast worthy of a third round pick. And again, it’s not like even the worst NFL team is comparable to LSU.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Is that his sister in the background?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
I’ll be honest, I think he’s a OG, not a OT. I know he’s athletic as all get out and massive, but he was a manchild at G and good at Tackle. Now, since you have JT holding down the LT spot for years, I could see Glenn being a solid RT more so than a LT. If CLE gets Glenn and pairs him with Thomas, that would be a strong OT group. Just make sure Glenn doesn’t need to be the LT anytime soon.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Richardson has called the weight room “his cave”. It is his place of worship and he is simply obsessed with it. At 5’11 and only 220 pounds, he has a power clean of over 365 pounds, a 600 pound squat, and a bench press of 475 pounds all to go along with lightning quick speed of a 4.4 40 yard dash. His coach has said that he picked up the 365 lbs. like it was a toothpick. However, his coach will not let him go heavier than that for fear of injury, saying “The last thing I need to do is mess this kid up”, indicating that we’ll never know his true one rep max.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
LSU’s front was just about as good as it gets last year. They went 8-deep on the DL, and all were talented. The first game I’m pretty sure Richardson had close to 140 total yards, if not more. But go ahead, keep on keepin’ on.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
275 lb MLB’s (that don’t exist anymore) and DE’s against richardson? i dunno, in all the highlights ive seen, those types of players rarely catch up to him, and when they do, they have a hard time getting a hold of him.
richardson seems as tough to bring down as a greased fire hydrant on a turbo charged segway.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Janoris Jenkins to the Seahawks seems really reasonable right now.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I should clarify: I don’t think Richardson is a bad player, at all. But he’s not Peterson. In that division, running against Ngata, Suggs, Lewis, Woodley, Harrison, and Timmons isn’t easy for great teams with multiple offensive weapons. The Browns have no one outside of Richardson. Gonna be a tough few years for sure.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
im assuming glenn would be moved to OG regardless of what team he’s on…much appreciated.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Check that. He had 169 total yards in the first meeting and 107 in the second meeting,
April 27th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Oh..you put Glenn next to Joe Thomas on the left side and Richardson will be eating bitches all day, which would be good for Old Man Weeden.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Draft question from last night… Did anybody notice when Tannehill got selected, instead of a highlight reel, they showed a blooper/error reel of him throwing bad passes and brutal INTs and missing wide open WRs ?
Chuckie was raving about him while the bloopers were up. Hilarious.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
you’re right…richardson actually holds onto the ball. one fumble in his time at bama.
/i think he’s a better PROSPECT than peterson…just as heavy, but runs lower to the ground, hangs onto the ball better, is a better blocker and receiver, stayed healthier
April 27th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
It kind of reminded me of TBL putting up that post about Bubba Watson getting 40 phone calls from a sports radio show before 6am after he won the masters and believing Bubba was serious when he said it was Mike and Mike.

was looking that way no matter who the browns drafted tho.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
They weren’t NFL good, and Alabama was able to keep LSU off balance with the passing threat. Cleveland? Mehhhhhhh.
Alabama was a TD better than almost every team it faced last year. It’s really hard to go from a super talented team to a poor NFL franchise and succeed. You don’t get to play Vandy and Mississippi State. It’s a lot harder to slip away from the tackle of an 18-year-old kid than it is an NFL veteran. With all the holes the Browns have I’m just surprised they took a running back.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
He hasn’t proven he can play a stand up position against complex offenses making defensive reads. He’s a couple years away from even being close to someone like a rookie Weatherspoon who has taken a couple of years to get just above average.
Again – he played against some average OL in college. Especially if you’re looking at the uga game who had 2 very average OTs.
I like the guy a lot and think he’s talented – I just think he was taken a bit soon.
I’m serious – I’ve consider him as a FB.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Part of me agrees, but then I think about how badass Peterson is and I slow my roll. I do think Richardson is going to be great, though.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
When Spencer and I were watching Richardson play against Penn State, I don’t think either one of us ever said, “God, it would be great if he were drafted by the Browns.”. Retrospectively, I’m not sure if it’s because we shared the usual Browns fan dream that he wouldn’t be available down where we hoped to pick or if it was because we just don’t draft good players.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I am optimistic about Weeden. The only knock on him is age and I’ve been in the camp that says the total # of brutal hits taken > age for determing a QB’s career length.
I think in 2 years he could be the 2nd best QB in the division.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
i get what you’re saying, but the running and passing games compliment each other. great passing teams can run because defenses are worried about the pass…if richardson’s as good as advertised, that opens up passing downfield.
now i understand the browns are incapable of taking advantage of passing downfield, but the tactic remains sound.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:09 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Who is Mrs Irrelevant ?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
having watched both a lot in college, richardson reminds me a lot of vernon davis.
not real flashy, insane athelitism and build, fundamentally sound.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
A d-line that was part of a defense that allowed 5 yards per rush and 30.9 ppg is freakish? Think you need to relax on the Bucs.
AJ Jenkins pick was a bit of a head scratcher, but he did produce (a lot) on a shitty passing team. I’d take that over Stephen Hill.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
i was too blown away by how alabama made penn state, a ridiculously talented team relatively in the world of CFB, look like a JV team from two divisions lower just physically. bama looked like a bunch of kids that had been shaving since 6th grade playing an actual 6th grade team…AND THAT WAS AGAINST PENN STATE.
/burns footage of bama vs. north texas
April 27th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Until he broke a couple runs late when the defense was exhausted he was averaging like 3 yards a run. I think he’s good inside, but I’d worry about his top end speed. Ideally he turns into a Ray Rice, but we’ll see.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
It just really, really hard for the running game to open up the pass consistently in the NFL. Especially in the AFC North. FWIW, I think Richardson is overrated and Weeden underrated, and that the Browns had a better draft than most give them credit for.
Yeah….and he had less than 90 yards on the ground.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
I could see this. He also seems like a really good kid, so you won’t have to worry about him too much at all. I’ll say this for Saban, he puts out decent dudes for the most part.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
YOU BETTER RUN, EGG!
April 27th, 2012 at 10:13 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
He had 89 yards against the second best run defense in the nation and he had 80 yards receiving. But please…keep up the good fight.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Peterson had 22 carries for 63 carries against TCU. Reading a lot of how of a few games is reckless.
Also, love the idea that because the Browns have few offensive weapons, they shouldn’t draft an offensive weapon because they will be the focus of the defense. It’s not exactly what you’re saying, but it’s close.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
baltimore does it. cincy does it. and that’s just the afc north.
in a game that was so fast, it featured probably half the plays you’d see if a spread team was involved. im sure his pace adjusted stats were just fine…let alone his stats adjusted for LSU’s insane defense.
i mean, what more do you want? he was the best player in the SEC (the best defensive conference). would you rather he had done all that against the big east or conf usa?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
again, these players don’t exist anymore. hell, where are all these 275 lbs MLB’s referred to? i only remember levon kirkland.

Craziest first quarter I can recall.
/attempts to use mythical 13th timeout
April 27th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
I’m fine with arguing against Richardson, but citing his 4.3 ypc against the best defense in the country is a bad place to start. He also had 7 receptions for 101 yds in those games.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Queefer thinks he fucking sucks. So overrated.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Because so many of them were drafted yesterday, right? Last year’s PSU team was not “ridiculously talented.” In fact, their best defensive player was out for the Bama game.
Richardson didn’t do much in that game until late (under 100 yards in the fourth), and he benefited greatly from a PSU offense that went three-and-out approx 563 times.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
If the browns were going to draft a QB and RB and were willing to trade picks to do so, they probably should have gone and gotten RGIII and then taken any number of RB’s later in the first.
But that would make too much sense.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
i am too…ive been trying to find holes in richardson the prospect for awhile. his biggest flaw is the significant chance he gets hurt. he’s exceptional at everything else…running, blocking, size, strength, speed, ball protection. it’s just that you KNOW he’ll get hurt at some point.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:17 AM

I can’t not pick my scabs. Just a disgusting habit.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
you missed the “relatively” part when talking about PSU…when you compare PSU’s roster to ALL of CFB, they’re EASILY in the top 15% in terms of talent.
and who’s DL was better than LSU’s last year, praytell?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Context is key here. That was Bama’s first road game with a very young QB. They didn’t trust him to throw the ball and Saban played that game like an NFL coach plays a hostile road game. Take care of the ball, let the defense win the game and get out alive. After 10 minutes Saban and Co knew Penn State wasn’t a threat to score too many points on them, so they played super conservative on offense.

That’s where I missed it, all videos are blocked here so I didnt bother checking for them.

Montario Hardesty, your carries are waiting.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
totally…bama took maybe two or three chances downfield that game. they didn’t need to do anything else since PSU’s offense was so bad, there was no way they were scoring.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Baltimore absolutely does not use the run to open up the pass. Maybe four years ago, but not now. In fact, for all of Rice’s skills, the Ravens are a middle-of-the-pack rushing team. Particularly in short yardage.
Im focusing on rushing yards, but that’s a RBs primary job. Drafting a guy third to catch passes out of the backfield seems like a waste.
Like I said, when you’re playing on the most talented team in the country, under 100 yards against your only other real competition isn’t overly impressive. Its not bad, but it’s not ridiculous to me.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
I was really hoping Cincy was trading down to get Doug Martin, now I’m afraid Lamar Miller won’t be around by the time we pick in the 2nd round.

Now we know where the Romney hatred really comes from.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
dude, you said joe flacco wasn’t a “big dumb QB”…they ABSOLUTELY use short stuff to set up down field passing. a screen or dumpoff to rice is a rushing play, for all intents and purposes.
stop man…YOU’RE A FAN OF RAY RICE’S TEAM. you of all people should embrace how nice it is to have a RB who can make shit happen in the passing game.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Agreed on this point. The Colts/Rams completely wasted Marshall Faulk.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:23 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
*hell
April 27th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
And again, it’s not like even the worst NFL team is comparable to LSU.
by that logic, none of yesterday’s draft picks stand a chance at the NFL level.
i’ll listen to the argument about taking him (or any other RB) at 3 overall, but it’s ridiculous to kill the kid on his impressive numbers against the best defensive conference in the league.
and i’d argue that those LSU and Bama DEFs were better than the bottom five NFL defenses last year. i think 6 of them went yesterday in the first round.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Trent Richardson getting knocked for a mediocre performance against Penn State has to be the dumbest fucking thing I’ve read amidst all the NFL draft analysis, and I’ve read almost all of Jason McIntyre’s posts on the subject.
Congrats.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
I dont think Richardson is Rice. And Rice was a second-round pick, not a guy Baltimore traded three picks to get.
Yes, because the Cleveland Browns are the exact same team as the Greatest Show on Turf. Issac Bruce could suit up for the Browns tomorrow and instantly be their best receiver.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Oh shit, Delmon Young’s being charged with a hate crime. Apparently he’s a big fan of Mel Gibson.

April 27th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Again, the Browns should address their poor offense by…not drafting offensive skill players?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Nothing is better than the instant draft grades. I remember when this cat gave Atlanta an A for drafting Jamal Williams, the useless DE out of ARK, in the first round.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
i dunno about that…
i don’t think richardson’s rice either…but where the player’s drafted relates only to expectation. balt didnt expect rice to be the player he was…just a solid starter. i think richardson absolutely could be that good if the browns get some competent players around him…no more ridiculous to suggest that than to say you know otherwise (considering he hasn’t played a game).
April 27th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I think SEC defenses are monstrously overrated and benefit greatly from playing poor offenses (only Arkansas finished in the top 30 of total offense last year). Alabama and LSU? Straight up legit Ds, no question. The rest? Dunno.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
you realize the rams before they got marshall faulk were pretty shitty on offense too, right?
lets just stop this…you hate the browns and are pessimistic, i like them (for now) and am optimistic. pardon me if i only want to be doom and gloom about one of my team’s draft picks and not both of them.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:30 AM

April 27th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
I bet CLE takes a 7th round WR speedster that really opens up the passing lanes for McCoy to throw his 20-yd wobbling outs
April 27th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
i think pac-10 and big 12 offenses are monsterously overrated and benefit from running more plays than slower paced teams against shitty defenses.
/cuts both ways
April 27th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Im focusing on rushing yards, but that’s a RBs primary job. Drafting a guy third to catch passes out of the backfield seems like a waste.
he’s taken 3rd overall because he’s exceptional at running, catching, AND pass blocking. focus on that…

i hope your piretti gets stolen.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I love this shit. Just cracks me up every time. The NFL certainly doesn’t agree with you, champ.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I wouldn’t have started with a RB. I think it’s easier to find a good running back than it is to find a good WR or OL. I would have moved back a few spots to take Blackmon, taken Doug Martin with the second first rounder, then grabbed Weeden in the second round. Just like that you have a great WR, a very good RB, and the QB you want.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
So you think UK could beat the Raptors too then, huh?
not sure how you got to this conclusion, but no, i don’t.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
seriously…”all those other things don’t count even if the same player does them.”
makes no sense whatsoever.
if that’s your metric, then why didnt the colts take RGIII since he can throw the ball better than luck? isn’t that what a QB’s supposed to do? nevermind all that other stuff, RGIII can throw better.
/also nevermind that richardson faced 8 man fronts in SEC all the time because bama didnt really have much of a passing threat and did just fine
April 27th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Comments like 277 are why I desperately wanted LSU or Bama to play OKST last year. God damn…the bloodbath that would have ensued would have been fabulous.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
I don’t hate the Browns. Hell, I don’t even give a shit about the Browns. They’re completely irrelevant to me.
If there’s one truth in this world, its that the NFL evaluates talent really, really well.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
i agree with what you’re saying.
part of me would rather have had kalil to put on the right, taken martin at 22 and weeden today. we DEF agree that weeden was an awful pick…no argument there.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
I agree that this would have been the more prudent move, but getting all of those to fall in place is a big risk, no?

April 27th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Alabama threw the ball fine. You see the title game? And eight-man college fronts are a far cry from eight-man NFL fronts.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
maybe UK couldn’t beat the raptors, but im pretty sure they’d contend with the bobcats.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:39 AM

Jaguars? Bills?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Did someone say puppy?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
alabama threw the ball fine BECAUSE EVERYONE WAS TRYING TO STOP RICHARDSON!!!
your trying to poke holes in a prospect that doesn’t have many to poke holes in. there wasn’t a better defensive conference than the SEC. fact. there wasn’t a better rushing prospect in CFB than richardson. fact.
you could use these exact criticisms agsinst literally every single RB prospect to ever come out of college in the history of the game. it’s a pointless exercise.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Is it?
Let’s say you don’t move back and even make the trade to move up to 3. Just flat out take Blackmon with the third pick and Martin with the 27. The only real question mark then would be Weeden who would almost certainly be there. If not, you stick with McCoy another year and draft Barkley since the Browns are almost certainly to have another top-5 pick in 2013.

Oh for fuck’s sake, dude. Do you remember how SHOCKED everyone was that Bama was throwing the ball in that game? Do you remember people talking about how it was a complete 180 from what everyone expected? That was a new thing for them. They spent their 30 days off crafting a genius plan to attack the perceived strength of LSU when in reality the DL was their biggest asset. I get it, you don’t like the hype the SEC gets. WEll, tough fucking luck. They are just better right now. Will they stay that way? Probably not, but I wouldn’t bet against it changing soon. They put out more NFL picks each year now. So not only do the CFB writers and coaches think they’re better, so do the NFL. It is what it is. You think I, as a UGA fan, like having Saban running through the league like he is? Fuck no, but we have to deal with it and so do you.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
and FWIW, i meant to say combining Bama and LSU defenses last year would be better than the worst 5 NFL DEF.
still a long shot, i know.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I was hoping they would have stayed where they were and taken Decastro, but the dude from Wisco seems fine.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I agree with this too, but you have to evaluate the margin of difference in each case.
My assumption is that the Browns thought that Richardson was much better than the next RB prospect (likely true). Much more so than WR, which I agree with as well. What is a better outcome – Blackmon + Doug Martin or Richardson + Ruben Randle (or whomever they’d take at WR at 22)?
The Weeden thing is what’s surprising. Think he would have made it to round 2, but if they were afraid of losing him they could of always traded back up for him. And what’s the difference between Weeden and the next-best QB (Osweiler, Cousins, etc.)?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:42 AM

/Doesn’t know if he’s dead.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
lol I actually think Weeden was a good pick, I just wouldn’t have taken him there. Second round for sure.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
personally, there are a TON more red flags on blackmon’s actual skill set than there are on richardson. i don’t think blackmon’s going to be that big of a star at all…but you thikn he’s the better pick there, fine.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Yes, because it’s not like CLE makes those moves in a vacuum. Other teams who covet the same player can then move in front of them.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:43 AM

And eight-man college fronts are a far cry from eight-man NFL fronts.
as are 5 man offensive lines.

April 27th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
The thing that cracks me up about Weeden was Stewart Mandel saying he will be an NFL starter for 8-10 years. Dude is gonna be 29 when the season starts. How many NFL starters are 37+?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
MY DRIVER SHAFT HAS SHIPPED!!! WHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 27th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
For better or worse, Weeden is not a project. He’s about as good as he’s going to be right now. And he’s easily an opening weekend starter.
There’d be growing pains with those other two and probably wouldn’t be able to start from day 1.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Of all the things to be arguing about this morning, it’s amazing that Trent Richardson is the focus.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
yea, that’s what pisses me off. by the time he starts his 2nd year in the NFL…let me repeat that…HIS SECOND YEAR IN THE NFL…he’ll be 30.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
You say the exact same thing when you climax don’t you?
April 27th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Of the top 25 rushers in the NFL last year, only two, Arian Foster and Ben Tate, came from an SEC school.
Not really sure what that means, but it’s fascinating.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
people really think this?
love his arm, but he’s got a HUGE learning curve in front of him going from fake OSU’s basic offense to an NFL one.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
But he’ll be a young 30…
/Don’t know what that means.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
An SEC hater started the argument, so it’s not that surprising. If he were smarter he would have singled out Kirkpatrick being overrated, not Richardson.

April 27th, 2012 at 10:48 AM

what do the NFL scouts say? according to Queefer, they are really, really, great at evaluating talent.
April 27th, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Having kids.
In addition to the RB stat, only four of the top 20 passers are from SEC schools (Stafford, Manning, Cutler, Scam Blewton).
You’d have to see what the success rate is compared to how many players from the conference were drafted to make this statement, yet I’m going to make it anyway — maybe, just maybe, the reason SEC defenses are considered to be so good is because the conference doesn’t really produce a ton of elite offensive guys?
Again, premature, but interesting.
