Mike Mayock Thinks Chandler Jones is the Best Defensive Player in the NFL Draft
Mike Mayock, the terrific NBC/NFL Network announcer, declared Wednesday that Chandler Jones of Syracuse is the “best defensive player” in the 2012 draft. Haven’t seen enough for the 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end? Here’s some film.
Jones had 7.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles for the Orange in seven games in 2011. He wasn’t the Big East defensive player of the year (or even dominate the league, according to Bruce Feldman). He had four sacks in 13 games in 2010 and two as a freshman in 2009.
But some guy on twitter went back and found this gem from 2009: Mike Mayock declared that Robert Ayers of Tennessee was the “best defensive player” in the draft. In three seasons (42 games) with the Broncos, Ayers has 4.5 sacks. To call him a disappointment so far would be putting it mildly. A slew of defensive players from the 09 draft have disappointed so far – Jackson, Curry was traded, Maybin was cut (though he shone with the Jets last season), etc – and Ayers is among them.
Mildly interesting – at 6-foot-3, 273 pounds, Ayers … is an undersized (weight-wise, anyway) pass rusher, just like Jones. Ayers didn’t come close to dominating the SEC in his two years with the Vols.
Gosh, I hope the Jets don’t draft this guy if Melvin Ingram is off the board.

Gosh, indeed.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
At least if he fails in football he can go dominate the UFC like his brother.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
You’re basing this off of the fact that Mike Mayock was wrong about a player who has a similar body type to Chandler Jones?
April 26th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Or he can carve out a good backup career like brother Arthur on the Ravens
April 26th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
it’s entirely plausible to see Jones as the best defensive player in the draft, but it is something entirely different once you get him on the field in the NFL.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
that’s not undersized at all. he’s heavier than all but one of last year’s sack leaders.

?

Gosh, Sanchez still sucks.

Pretty good but not dominant ACC defensive end?
He played in the Big East, Mr Sports Blogger.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Wouldn’t mind the Lions picking this dude if a top CB ain’t available.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
While there are examples of guys like this that have failed, I’d like to point you to Aldon Smith. He was very comparable to Jones in that he didn’t set the world on fire in his conference, which was the dreaded defense-less Big 12 (!!!). However, he led all rookies in sacks and nearly made the Pro Bowl.
Lots of similarities in both players’ games. Not saying that Jones is the same as the Aldon, but this type of thing has worked out in the past.
Also:
You’re really going to go there? Wonder what would happen if some old TBL draft previews were looked at. Sure there are plenty of lemons there.

Based on my studies, 60% of the time Mike mayock is wrong, everytime.

That would be a change. Usually it’s only when athletes flame out in other sports do they turn to the NFL.

Using this logic, I deduce that based on your previous opinion of Mark Sanzhez any statement you make regarding QB’s is shit.

nobody wants to be wrong about Jason Pierre Paul all over again. That’s why Philly is so hot for this dude, too. They’ve got 9 or 10 defensive ends already. But you’ve got to copy the giants, and get pressure at all costs.

I think the Vikings mis-played their options on trading out of #3. They tried to sell teams on moving up for Blackmon, Claibourne or T-Rich, when they should have played with MIA, the least competent front office and tried to sucker them to come up to #3 for Tannehill.

I for one am shocked that a guy can be wrong with his predictions for a player in a draft. It’s almost as if there’s really no such thing as an “expert” for NFL drafts.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
sure there is…you can be an expert if you’re familiar with a large portion of players’ skill sets. where they go is all blind shootin’.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Should have said lemon parties.
April 26th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
From what I’ve read they’re hot after either Cox or Barron and might move up to 6 or 7 to ensure they get one of them.

I love that it still says ACC on the front page of this lousy blog, in describing this kid’s college conference. Just clueless.
Massaquoi > Nicks
Haha. And that fucking dummy from the Titans, Britt, and three other guys. But pretend like everybody else makes the mistakes.
I also liked seeing him get patted on the head by @smartfootball yesterday. That was funny.

I think they play that 1x a year at the Cedar Lee cult film series.

the only good idea he’s had recently was the mass purging of commenters. But he wouldn’t do it, because it would be difficult.

i don’t like over doing it, but there is some shit we just cannot let pass, like ACC/Big East, and calling a DE undersized at 273 lbs

Very underated flick.

He certainly makes mistakes, and definitely brings it on himself with Jets talk, but overall I don’t think its as bad as some make it seem.

You know who kills it in that movie? David Hyde Pierce.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I do get the feeling that we’re reaching a tipping point. Criticism for TBL, which is largely spot on, seems to be more frequent and harsher than in the past.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
rudd on michael mcdonald is great too.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Agree, and I have to admit to being guilty of this. But a lot of it is because of the push back we get from him. He’s certainly not endearing himself with comments like “what do you do?” and “I’ll PayPal $1 so you can buy a clue”.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I always thought Christopher Meloni dominated that flick
April 26th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
I think the frequency and harshness have gone up proportionally to the reasons for it.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I think its mostly because he’s douchey, and doesn’t seem to be able to take what he dishes. There’s also the stubbornness that’s grating.
Much of the criticism comes from the laziness of the posts. Syracuse was in the Big East last year, but it says ACC. I mean, it is a bit unprofessional, but whatever.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
I can’t disagree.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
1) Well reasoned, well researched posts (Lisk, sometimes Duffy, occasionally EIC) get respect and dialogue (and dick jokes and pictures of dogs).
2) Funny and/or ‘look at this video/picture’ posts (CRM and Hernia) get a lot of responses (and dick jokes and pictures of dogs).
3) Posts with factual errors, asinine opinions, or dead horses (sometimes Duffy, a lot of EIC) get mocked (and dick jokes and pictures of dogs).

I don’t disagree with your underlying opinion on Jones..but no way is he undersized weight wise for a pass rusher. This isn’t 1995.
