Joel Ward’s Game-Winning Goal for the Capitals Led to Nasty Racist Comments on Twitter
Washington’s Joel Ward scored the game-winning goal last night against the Boston Bruins. The goal should have been notable because it came in overtime of Game 7 against the defending Stanley Cup champion. Of course, Joel Ward isn’t white. Thus, his race quickly took center stage. You can read all the n-word-laced tweets here.
Some people probably want to blame the vile reaction on Boston fans, but I’m sure there are plenty of idiots throughout the country who were watching hockey and were surprised to see a black guy score a goal. Like every one of these pathetic stories – be it in hockey or soccer – it’s surprising that people would actually still use this word.
If you were wondering, Ward is Canadian. His parents are originally from Barbados.

Karl Alzner’s shot block about 50 seconds into the overtime was the best play in the extra session for me. Threw his body in front of a wide open net and saved a goal. Holtby went down, there was a cross-slot pass and only Alzner was there to save it. Just a great play by the BC native.

My boy is Jamaican but raised in Toronto and related stories to me of the heckling and racial insults he received and he basically looks like your typical Dominican, not even black, really. I worked in pro hockey, albeit the minor leagues. Spent plenty of time with players and coaches. Saw no pattern of racism. I’d say there’s one in every lockerroom, just like about everywhere. I don’t think it’s a suprise that certain people from non-diverse areas have small world views. Just like anywhere else in the world.

I don’t even hate hockey. It’s a great sport. I’ve been to a few Flyers’ games and I loved the Stars when I was living in Dallas. With that being said, there are tons of stories from black players like Anson Carter, Mike Grier and Trevor Daley who’ve talked about some of the hostile arena environments they had to deal with strictly because they were black. That’s ridiculous in this day and age.

The officiating has been horrid both ways in that series. Foligno’s interference call leading to the 5 on 3 was laughable. The Neil play where he’s shoving Lundqvist out of the crease with his stick while kicking it in was insanity. They call Rupp for a garbage roughing by the bench, but then don’t call Del Zotto cross checking someone in the back by the boards. Neil is running amok. Who knows what happens tonight. MSG could just implode from the ineptitude and the thought that Craig Anderson is actually a good goalie.
