Columnist Blames Denver’s Late 1st Round Draft Pick on Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow’s with the Jets now, and even though nobody should be talking about him during draft week … a Denver columnist was able to work Tebow into a story. Negatively, of course. Way to go, Mike Klis!
If not for Tebow, the Broncos may have been picking in the top five for a second consecutive year. They may have been picking closer to 6:30 p.m. They may have been in position to draft another Von Miller.
The Broncos were 1-4 through Week 5 of the 2011 season, seemingly headed for another high draft choice after finishing 4-12 the year before.
Then came Tebow. One improbable victory followed another. The unorthodox Tebow not only led the Broncos to the playoffs, he led them past Pittsburgh in the postseason’s first round with an overtime touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas. That playoff victory qualified the Broncos for the NFL’s Elite Eight in 2011 — but bottom eight for the subsequent draft in 2012.
Really, Mike? Yeah, it’s too bad Tebow didn’t make the Broncos the best story in the NFL in late December/early January. It would have been much better if they were awful and irrelevant and put themselves in the 5th or 6th draft position so they could decide between Coples or Cox or Kuechly.
This is yet another reason I hope the Broncos flounder with Peyton Manning in 2012 and miss the playoffs. The schedule will prevent them from double-figure wins, but I’m just not sure if the Chargers/Chiefs/Raiders are good enough to win nine games. [Post]

Mike Klis has a botched circumcision.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Reasonable.
I see his point though. I’d be pissed at Tebow if I were a Broncos fan too. He’s preventing them from potentially drafting the next Alphonso Smith.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
This guy needs to justify his paycheck, what else is he going to write about? He’s spent the past month writing everything possible regarding who DEN can pick, that’s exhausted. OTAs are still a ways away.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
I think I have found the problem.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Wow… Tebow just can’t win.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Like the tides.
Klis has been the biggest pro-Tebow homer in town since day one. He wrote a book about the kid for fuck’s sake. He’s just being contrarian. St. Bear gets it.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Tebow is thick.

I don’t know, Peyton Manning becoming the next QB seems like nearly inexhaustible subject matter.

i know we just talked about criticism but cmon…”the schedule will prevent them from double figure wins but the division teams they play six games against suck ass and struggle to win 9 except in the post i linked to where i said KC should be much-improved.”
there’s a bustle in your hedgerow.

April 26th, 2012 at 12:50 PM
I’d actually like to build on my comment to point out that I don’t think sports needs a 24hr news cycle. At least not the mainstream sports.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
This is one of the reasons why people hate columnists.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Tebow is thick.
Are you saying Tebow has a choad?
April 26th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
I didn’t get the impression he was actually upset with Tebow…he was just stating what is likely true. They probably have a higher draft pick without Tebow coming in.

Predict the most Broncos picks (in one tweet) and win a signed ball from our entire draft class. Use #BroncosPicks. Good luck!
That’s pretty cool.

I agree with Jason, this is a hacky story by Klis. Nice take down.
Disagree about this though. No need to blame the team for some homerific columnist crappy story. If we did that, we would be rooting aagainst pretty much every team to miss the playoffs.

April 26th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
The schedule will prevent them from double-figure wins, but I’m just not sure if the Chargers/Chiefs/Raiders are good enough to win nine games.
You as a Jets fan should know that looking into a schedule means nothing. Nobody knows how good a team will be, year in and year out. The Eagles, Jets, Colts, 49′ers, Chargers, Chiefs, and Bucs all proved this last year.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
In all the right places..
April 26th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Klis has always been nauseatingly pro-Tebow. He’s probably trying to tweak Elway and Fox, who are likely both blissfully unaware of his existence.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
The article is a fairly generic draft guess from a local beat writer that probably used Tebow for pageviews (gasp!). I took the Tebow portion of the meat of the article to be tongue in cheek, mainly because right after the line about “…subsequent draft in 2012″ comes the line:
Then at the end of the article,
Might just be me though.
This guy is, without a doubt, someone the EIC knows personally and may even receive a stipend. I’m certain of it.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
I thought @MattMoriarty worked alone.
April 26th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
I agree with Jason, this is a hacky story by Klis. Nice take down.
That playoff win would’ve been worth another 2-3 years of mediocrity for a lot of teams. If I were a Bronco fan it would’ve been.

To be fair to TBL on this one…I root for the Jets (specifically Sanchez) to be awful mainly for the stuff written on this site.

I firmly believe that if ESPN created a channel featuring just live sporting events from around the world, it would take off like crazy.

Hmmm. Might be a betting opportunity for you, JMac. Anyone seen an early O/U on the Broncos win total?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:00 PM

So….. how about those Royals?

Not apologizing for anyone. Been reading this site since the beginning mainly cause I loved reading the comments. But recently they’re just hate-filled dribble about grammer and shit. I just wanna talk sports, hence being on a sports site.
So in your ideal blog world, a comment section of a post would be a discussion that has little or nothing to do with the post, but is instead a non-sequiter discussion of why we like sports? I think that would be old after about a day, which is why it doesn’t happen. I’m sorry that we don’t fulfill your comment section fantasy for this place, but I suppose we will have to learn to live with your disappointment.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:00 PM

April 26th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
totally. like cricket and rugby and aussie rules football and shit.

April 26th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
you misspelled grammar, dummy. I mean, GAWD.
He was talking about Kelsey Grammer! Oh wait, he wasn’t, my GAWD!
April 26th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Doesn’t Jason even say the site is only intended to be 33% sports, or was that a joke that a commenter made?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
I just wanna talk sports, hence being on a sports site.
I don’t mean to continually point out your mistakes, but often, the comments section of this lousy blogs talks about sports in spite of the horrible posts about Kim Kardashian playing Pop-a-Cumshot in an orange dress.
I think if old JMac would take the top 36 guys in number of comments for the past three months, and give them all the boot, the next 36 would just start pointing out how shitty a lot of the posts are.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
If you excuse me guys, I’m going to go walk up to a group of women during my lunch break and tell them that the conversation they are having is not what I would like to hear women talking about and then ask them to indulge me in what I want to talk about instead. Should go well.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:02 PM

Just live sports from around the globe, as it happens. Like spencer said, cricket, rugby, soccer, handball, basketball, whatever they can find.
It would require zero infrastructure, they could just pick up the local broadcast.

April 26th, 2012 at 1:04 PM

if you show cricket, you have to show a lot of cricket to get through one cricket match. It takes a long time to get anybody out in that game.
Classic was showing live Aussie Rules last year, but at midnight on Fridays or some awful something or other. And they never advertised it, so it would come and go. Those guys are absolute animals though.
I think Fox should have a rugby channel.

They kinda sorta of do this with ESPN360, or whatever they call it. I’d just like to see them expand on it. And promote it, like Dirt said.

HTown- thoughts on Buch? I missed the start because of work stuff but I looked at the F/X this morning. He got the ball down better than his first couple starts and his release point was better. Still, only 6 swings and misses on 107 pitches. His changeup is not very good. That rotation needs some upgrades and I’m not sure where they come from.

When the EIC fancies himself a basketball expert and openly claims to only start giving a shit about baseball in October, this is to be expected.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Tim Ryan condescendingly told us that it would be ‘different’ now and didnt care to elaborate. Now, he write baseball posts on a certain topic, and maybe, if he feels like it, writes some lines at the bottom about other games that happened.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Pretty much.
But seriously, it doesn’t even have to be obscure sports. The Chinese basketball league with Stephon Marbury, for example.

Oh, yes. You see, there was a post, we all made all the relevant comments about the post that could reasonably be made, and then we switched topics to kickball and magic happened. That’s why I’ve never understood the, “STAY ON TOPIC” folks. Gotta have a little freedom and give and take and it is much more interesting.

We’re creatures of habit who are used to a baseball post between 9-11 AM EST so we can discuss the games from the night before with people we know and have done so for years. For someone who constantly reminds us of the content appropriations of this site, you conveniently forget them when it pleases you.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Pretty much. Except DirecTV does put buffers up if I watch too much TV, like Comcast does with my internet.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Any particular role?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
you’d have to ask the people who are commenting if the anger/hate is on purpose.
Hey guys, is the anger/hate on purpose?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
jeannette lee only appeals to the casual fan…real billiards’ enthusaists flock to corr’s impeccable technique and stubbornness to update her eyewear fashion.
I bet she’s a methodical throwback in bed too.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Someone went after Jay V the other day.
Probably one of your twitter buddies. Jay V. is one of your more reasonable critics.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Hey guys, is the anger/hate on purpose?
Not to speak for everyone, but I am personally bemused far more often than I am angry.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
He meant “now” not “no”.

Hey guys, is the anger/hate on purpose?
I have no anger or hate. I’m just here to talk about my feelings for sports and dick jokes.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s to get a rise out of you.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
He meant “now” not “no”.
Statement retracted.

Yep, that’s what the ‘it’ was, the commenter response and not the post itself.
Yep. Usually good for a sarcastic chuckle.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Not true. You used to do morning round up posts for nba, mlb, AND nhl. Then you got rid of nhl. Now mlb is gone. Dont even get me started on the PM Roundup.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:27 PM

KC, if you could stay on topic please that would make my blog viewing experience a better one. Kthnxbi.

Pretty clear why Yardwork changed and Ballin didn’t. Not enough Youtube clips.

Lack of communication.
We’re told Yardwork is changing to a more free-form style. Ok, fine. Baseball post goes up at 9:30. Is it Yardwork? We don’t know. Do we hijack that post, or wait?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:27 PM

#144 while sarcastic very much has an element of truth to it.

those are tweaks, come on.

They had an animal planet episode of “Too Cute” with kittens and one of the litters was Savanahs.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
those are tweaks, come on.
Just bring Yardwork back. you can do whatever else you like. Been reading for years, that was the best post.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
You’re right.
I think were the disconnect is, is that the 1/3 sports used to comprise more of the posts, and the 1/3 pop culture used to be contained mostly in the AM/PM Roundups. With the PM Roundup gone, that fluff has turned into posts. So while the overall content may not have changed, it’s been redistributed in a way that appears otherwise.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I’ve been angry, like once, in years of reading this site (engager got me). There’s a lot of honest discourse and good fun around here in the comments. Gotta take what you dish out.
Why the hell would I want to come someplace and agree with everybody on every damn topic? This aint one of Peter King’s Circle Jerks is it?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
I really dont think it’s a tweak to turn your 1/3 sports into 90% basketball.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Agreed. That’s like complaining that Lisk was brought on.
Nice that you are answering questions, which has become far too infrequent.
I am truly curious to the answer to the following question: Why do you not have an editor?
April 26th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
I’m just glad that through it all you’ve managed to stay away from those pesky comment-driven posts.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Good lord. There comes a time when even though you’re right, you have to walk away from an argument because the other person is operating on another plane of reality.
/team bring back yardwork
This. There is never (rarely) malicious intent in the comments section. The give and take of insults, sarcasm, and TV/movie quotes is the predominant form of modern communication. This includes the real and sarcastic takedowns of asinine posts and factual errors.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Nick- I know Dusty’s method is nearly impossible to figure out but you think that Chapman will be in the bullpen all year or if Leake/Bailey continue to struggle they’ll give him a rotation chance? His command has been much better this year.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Fuck you.
April 26th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Agree, FWIW I refresh more often when there’s some back and forth with the writers when they defend their viewpoint.
I personally think the “low 7 figures” thing (true or not) has deceived people into thinking this site has a decent budget for stuff like an editor. I agree with whomever suggested they have their co-workers proofread, though. It’s very much needed.

SC – No idea what Dusty may do, but it’s clear that AC should be in the rotation. I’d say he’ll get his shot when an injury to a starter happens.

Complete elimination of coverage of a sport is not a tweak.
