2012 NFL Mock Draft 2.0, Oct. 6, 2011
2012 NFL Mock Draft 1.0, May 4, 2011
The 2012 NFL draft begins in a few hours. I’m hoping to hit 15 out of 30 (the first two picks are a given). Before looking at and mocking mine, here are some other prominent mock drafts that dropped this week: Mike Mayock, Michael Lombardi, Greg Cosell, Greg Bedard, Evan Silva the National Football Post and Bob McGinn. There’s even an “oddsmakers” mock draft (well, top 16). In taking a perusal of beat writers and sifting through last minute scuttlebutt, here’s my final mock draft of 2012 about what I THINK teams will do. I hope to finish in the Top 10.
1 Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford.
2 Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor.
3 Minnesota Vikings – Matt Kalil, OL, USC. Not buying the smokescreens.
4 Cleveland Browns – Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama.
5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU.
6 St. Louis Rams – Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State. Lots of buzz about Fletcher Cox of Mississippi State.
7 Jacksonville Jaguars – Stephen Gilmore, CB, South Carolina.
8 Miami Dolphins – Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M.
9 Carolina Panthers – Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State.
10 Buffalo Bills – Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College. The GM wants a playmaker. They get one.
11 Kansas City Chiefs – David DeCastro, OL, Stanford.
12 Seattle Seahawks – Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse. Mike Mayock loves him.
13 Arizona Cardinals – Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame.
14 Dallas Cowboys – Mark Barron, S, Alabama.
15 Philadelphia Eagles – Michael Brockers, DT, LSU.
16 New York Jets – Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina. Probably more me being hopeful than anything.
17 Cincinnati Bengals – Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama.
18 San Diego Chargers – Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois. Sack machine to a team in desperate need of one.
19 Chicago Bears – Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
20 Tennessee Titans – Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis.
21 Cincinnati Bengals – Jonathan Martin, OL, Stanford.
22 Cleveland Browns – Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor.
23 Detroit Lions – Riley Reiff, OL, Iowa.
24 Pittsburgh Steelers – Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia.
25 Denver Broncos – Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State.
26 Houston Texans – Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford.
27 New England Patriots – Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama. Who do you draft for a man capable of anything?
28 Green Bay Packers – Shea McClellin, LB, Boise State.
29 Baltimore Ravens – Peter Konz, OL, Wisconsin.
30 San Francisco 49ers – Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama.
31 New England Patriots – Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech.
32 New York Giants – Dont’a Hightower, LB, Alabama.

I’m calling Janoris Jenkins to the Lions.

Aaaand now that song is stuck in my head
April 26th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Would be happy with day one if it went down like that for the browns. Local radio had a guest on that said he heard a lot of talk on the browns making 2 top 15 picks tonight. I guess they love Floyd out of ND and would be willing to trade up to get him
April 26th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
Hate LBs going so early that can’t rush the passer. Outside of Patrick Willis, it’s hardly worth it.
Poor Buffalo. Hope they take Michael Floyd.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
I just saw a twitter rumor about the Eagles going after Tannehill and I died a little bit inside.

April 26th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
This made me crack up
April 26th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
I just hope the Jets don’t do anything stupid. I doubt Ingram will be around at 16, but I hope he is. Either way I think they’ll have several good DL or S options.
What’s happened in the last 6 days that made you drop Coples (from 9 to 20) and Upshaw (from 17 to 27)?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Why should we be the only ones to suffer here?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
wtf? why not link the commenter draft. we took it serious-like and i bet it hits on just as many if not more as the experts linked above
April 26th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
I just learned that Rich Gosselin is not doing a 2012 mock draft. I am crestfallen. He went out on top, his 2011 mock straight up murdered every pundit.
DAMN.

I feel like this has to be included.

ive mentioned this many times before about how truly horrible of a band europe was, but it still cracks me up…they used to play final countdown multiple times at their shows since it was their only good song.

Agreed. Thought it was pretty well done.

Phenomenal work here. Now if you excuse me I am going to go run up and down the stairs a few times.

April 26th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
That’s the guy I want, but I think he is going to get taken right before they pick by either the Browns or Bengals.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
those early mocks are silly. rg3 nowhere to be found last october.
no. 2 with a bullet i’d say

April 26th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Kuechly AND McClellin before Hightower? Preposterous.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
and this
April 26th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
With the rookie wage scale and no lock-out, there’s going to be more than a few trades tonight.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
I know somebody who went to one of their shows. They opened and closed with Final Countdown.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
What the? I thought you said they were going offense, and that Barron/defense was a smokescreen. We even bet on it!
April 26th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
… And with the 22nd pick in the draft the Atlanta Falcons …
remain stuck with the overrated Julio Jones.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Whoever drafts him should just negotiate the contract with his baby mamas, right?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Whooooa, now you guys are bashing Europe!? Theyre a swedish institution!
Seriously though, Rock the Night is not the worst song ever.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Mel Kiper and Todd McShay must have the best jobs in the world. They get to watch football all the time and do onscreen work for 5-6 weeks out of the year. The biggest part of their jobs — mock drafts — have no expectations whatsoever. They aren’t expected to be correct and no one gives a shit when they’re not.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
I don’t think there is anyway Hightower gets past Pittsburgh at 24 unless one of the elite linemen fall to them. They seem enamored on getting a replacement for Farrior.

April 26th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Which is why more people are starting to value talent assessment rather than mock draft predictions. The Mayock’s and Cosell’s of the industry will dominate in the coming years.

April 26th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I understand why they would draft Blackmon, but the Rams D is terrible and Cox to me makes more sense.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Earliest suprise: Tannehill to Browns at 4
Biggest riser: Fleener in low teens
Biggest fall: I could see Kendall Wright going out of the 1st

I would like to take this moment to point out that TNT is featuring two home teams tonight who have combined for a 1-31 record lately. I can’t believe I am saying this, but the draft might be more exciting. That is saying quite a bit.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
ILB is a bigger need than most people think. Do I like the idea of Foote or Stevenson Sylvester starting? NO
April 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
From Mock Draft 2.0:
7. Cleveland Browns – Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama – Crestfallen that there’s no QB here, the Browns take the best back in the draft and decide not to pay Peyton Hillis. And yes, I realize that’s seven offensive players in a row, and highly unlikely to happen.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
i lolled.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Also… is Devon Still really lasting to round 2? I just can’t see him getting by the Patriots at 27 if they don’t move up for Barron (which I also don’t see happening, at all… the price of moving up is disproportionate to the yield, which BB won’t fall for)
April 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
that’s a badass album cover.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Pats are not drafting a WR in the first round
April 26th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
rumor has it belichick’s gonna draft a long snapper with his first three picks since it’s a deep class and nobody else will have one. then, two years down the road, he’ll trade two of the long snappers to oakland and jacksonville* for second round picks. it will be glorious.

I haven’t watched ESPN as much of late, but I’ve never known Kiper to be inflammatory just because. I still find his encylopedic knowledge of all the potential draftees impressive. He usually bases each guy on his own merits. If is EPSN paired him with a Greg Cossell 22-film guy, that’d be better than putting McShay against him.
About 13-14 years ago, Kiper used to do ESPN Radio on the weekend. He could talk just as fluently on all the major sports. He would actually be a great studio host. He invented the entire draftnik cottage industry, he can do whatever he wants. Legend.

Lately Ive been listening to the radio while I shower on weekends, and Kiper is still on, I think it’s Saturday mornings with some other dude
April 26th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Boy have their last two albums absolutely sucked balls. I know the whole melodic thing is part of their schtick but jesus christ, come with some metal once in a while.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Is there one network that is going to spoil the picks and one that will let them be a suprise? For the first time since the Joe Thomas draft, I don’t have to work on draft night.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
how is that going to be possible when the apocalypse is coming around week 15?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
it’s a comical play on your punctuation of choice.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I dont think it’s going to matter, since Twitter will still spoil everything. And I wouldnt have the restraint to watch without simultaneously checking Twitter.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
To me, it seems Kiper is more of an information guy, not a true talent evaluator. He seems to use aggregate information from his sources, be it scouts, front office personnel, or agents.

which is crucial when having to fill a few minutes in an event where 200+ players get chosen. mcshay? useless. he must be liquidated.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
I have not followed this draft as closely as others (mostly because the Raiders have already used 3 picks from the 2012 draft on 3 different QBs)…has Luck agreed to a contract yet?
Any reason he has not?

more than anything i wish we had the capability for traveling at light speed, if only to lay eyes upon the gas giants in our solar system.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Oh, I agree. Kiper is great theater. If he tells me a guy doesn’t have great technique, I will believe him because he has put in the work to glean this information.
However, if I want to know what is wrong with a player’s technique…I would defer to a Mayock/Cosell.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
kiper’s cred suffers because of his looks
April 26th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Travel quicker than light speed, and all of the sudden you can “travel” back in time…that’s what blows my mind.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
It’s the hair. People are just jealous mofo’s.

In theory.

The first 1/3 of Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything” is pretty awesome for that reason.
Also awesome (@CJ)
April 26th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
I thought it was time travel into the future, i’m probably thinking of the wrong theory though.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Any reason he has not?
He could agree in principal, but one, he can’t sign until after the draft. Also the agent will string it out to stretch the news cycle for marketing purposes. Also, since the financials are all relatively locked in due to the last CBA, there are more personal-service and small player friendly items in the contract stuff the agents will try to throw in there. Also, it might depend on the actual cap, which might not be set yet…

April 26th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Well, of course…I have not done it. But if you could take a snapshot of earth (with some high res photography) 1/365th of a light year away from Earth, you could see me doing something inconsequential yesterday.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
You should check out Blackwater Park and Still Life. A solid two hours of pure awesomeness. Also, they are pretty rad in concert too.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
“Amanda, I just saw happened out there and….. GOD you’re a hottie. Hey can I see you naked?”
April 26th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
no, you had it right the first time. if we’re travelling faster than light, what we’d be seeing at our destination, we wouldn’t have observed on earth for lightyears.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Who ya got, Ryan Tannehill wife vs. Colt McCoy wife?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
colt’s.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Wouldn’t you just see an accelerated version of time if you are going towards the source of the light?
And if you travel faster than the speed of light away from the light source, you’d be going back in time from your original origin (you’d ‘see’ the same events twice) but experience accelerated time in the direction of travel.
Maybe?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
No chance. A 40-time north of 5 seconds? He doesn’t pass the first test.

April 26th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
What’s their wonderlic scores?
April 26th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
kiper’s cred suffers because of his looks
bullshit. What’s he supposed to do, go with some weak styling that would wilt once Berman’s swamp ass raises the room humidity?! I think not.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
So space and time have to be coordinates? If you shift away from one you can shift away from the other as a function of distance and velocity? But you CAN’T return to the same place at a different time, because it is constant.
So you could see yesterday if you were 1/365.25 light years away, but you’d see two days in the span of one, during your trip back.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
I understand…that’s why I put “travel” in quotes…I just mean you could see the past. It’s pretty cool.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Sorry I missed this. Damn meetings. TBL I agree on a lot of you early picks in avoiding latest buzz and smoke screens. Good stuff.
I don’t think Pittsburgh is to high on Glenn, so I think they go Hightower.

I once sang Amish Paradise during karaoke last year. I got a mild reception at best. God forbid I tried to be different and not do the same old thing like Bon Jovi or Journey.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Correct. You could see the past, but couldn’t live in it.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Today might be the best sports event after the Masters. I love the draft. They could do a mock draft every other day and I would not call it overdone. Great stuff.
To save Netflix, all they have to do is get the all-22 film of every D1 college game.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
It’s really cool. So instead of home movies from 20 years ago, we could just put a giant space mirror 10 light years away, right???
April 26th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
that seems pricey.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:50 PM

How will the post draft coverage work around here? Is Jason Lisk going to evaluate selections made? I don’t watch the draft so I’m curious if Mr. Lisk can tell me how my Bears do.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Still going to need some hack at Walmart to edit out the boring parts though.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Interesting….
April 26th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
I got this. Their 1st round pick will likely end up on IR, while picks 2 and 3 fail to get on the active game day roster. Picks 4 and 5 are pleasant surprises on special teams, while pick 6 is a surprise starter on defense when [aging defender] got injuried and he step in.

hopefully, yes….in two or three years as is proper

I actually like Phil Emery so far, Brawny. Getting Marshall for under market value, not telling the press much of anything and for the most part keeping Lovie out of his decision making process are all gold stars for Phil. I have high hopes for him going forward. We’re off the Jerry Angelo “Imma put some sprinkles on it, maybe a lil twist” plan.
April 26th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I won’t stand for anyone mocking or disparaging Mel’s pompadour. Some people follow trends, and some people set trends, baby.

Man, I keep forgetting Angelo is gone. I need to go back to the drawing board…
April 26th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
26 Houston Texans – Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford.
Granted I haven’t been following draft coverage much at all, but why the fuck would the Texans want another TE? We already have two in Dreessen and Daniels. We need a slot receiver to compliment Andre Johnson and take the pressure off of him.

My draft prediction: The Eagles and Pats will make some sort of trade

Eric T0upal aka BrawnyTom Says:
Lotta chalk up in there. Where do you see some suprises? Where do you see a big shock, a big riser and a big drop for a player>? I like you putting something out there though.

Fleener is rising a ton. I don’t see any way he lasts til 26. It’s a copy cat league. Lots of TE success. And now the Pats are showing how you can use 2 TE. All about getting the best talent on the field.
I think he’s gonna go much higher than people think.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
I was thinking about this after you posted your “surprise” picks…
I am going with Dolphins don’t take Tannehill, Browns trade up into the teens to get him.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
I don’t buy Kendall Wright as a first rounder.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
Word is they’d have to leapfrog SEA

That’s fine with me, I don’t want him. I want someone to supplant Jacoby Jones and/or Kevin Walter. I realize that person may not be out there, but adding yet another TE who can catch and creating a logjam at that position is not a solution, unless Kubiak wants to start running an offense with a three TE set. And I do not see that happening.

With basketball players select some huge fast kid who can’t hit a jumper in the late rounds or undrafted.
I think TY Hilton is going to be a steal as a teams Slot WR.

Please track this.
Somebody track it.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
I can’t do it because I’ll be busy rage-tweeting about how goddamned stupid Jerry Jones is for taking Michael Brockers at 14 instead of DeCastro.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Agreed
April 26th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Dreesen is gone, no? To Manning-land?
April 26th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
In case anybody’s wanting to tune in to an audio broadcast of the draft that isn’t a production of the NFL or BSPN, check out 1310 The Ticket in Dallas. They’re going wall-to-wall this weekend for the (I think) 18th year in a row. All 250-someodd picks live.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I’m on it Mint
April 26th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I think the Rams/Jags/Panthers are the “surprise” picks in the top 10. the last 8 or so are probably different than most standard mocks. But I was trying to figure out what each team would do giving their history/needs/preferences. ie Chargers love big/fast WR. Thats why they get Hill instead of Wright.
I appreciate the feed back.

Dreesen is gone, no? To Manning-land?
Wait…what? Sonofabitch. How did I miss that?
April 26th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
TBL, pretending the Jets stand pat at 16, who would like to see them take? What positions should they address early in the draft?

Humpty Dance – every time.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
So this huge guy in a brand new Mercedes got cut off by a bike messenger right in front of my building and decided to body slam the bike messenger’s head into the ground after the messenger spit on his car. Bike messenger’s head was gushing blood. Cops showed up and arrested the Mercedes driver. He’s so huge they had to wait for an SUV to show up because he couldn’t fit in the back of the regular cop car.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
So, you’re saying he was “thick”?
April 26th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
awesome.
speaking of.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
I would never spit on the car of a guy who is too big to fit in the back of a regular cop car.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Huge fat or huge muscular?
/not Coop’d, curious
April 26th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Nor would I.
There is police tape right in front of the entrance to the building now. Mercedes is just sitting there with the driver’s door open. Guess the bike messenger’s about to get himself a nice car.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Muscular. His arms were the size of tree trunks. And he was covered in tattoos.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
I once sang Amish Paradise during karaoke last year. I got a mild reception at best. God forbid I tried to be different and not do the same old thing like Bon Jovi or Journey.
Humpty Dance – every time.
i brought the house down one night with At This Moment. the falsetto at the end was the killer app
April 26th, 2012 at 3:24 PM

I’m starting to send a trend on this site
April 26th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
And 90 lbs. I think that’s part of why their universally loathed because everyone can kick their asses.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:27 PM

Dreesen left, so they only have Daniels and Garret Graham with Casey as starting FB
April 26th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I laughed.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:30 PM

Yeah, Htown pointed that out. I’ll be taking a corner off of my fan card today as punishment.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
This is the reason that it might be a good idea to take him. Especially since they’re no guaranteed money left on OD’s contract and he’d be a nice salary cap cut next year and Fleener could be plugged into his slot for a lot cheaper.
However, I’d be surprised if Smithiak drafts a TE this high. They typically don’t. I like Orson Charles but I wonder if they’ll shy away from him after getting popped for a DUI.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Brawny, I could see the Floyd at #9. Looks like you have Jenkins off the 1st round, I bet the Bengals have him over Gilmore. We’ll see.
April 26th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
No way Titans take Poe.
April 26th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
I will bet my savings account on the under of this. TBL would you care to wager?
I have PayPal.
April 26th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
15 is tough. I feel pretty good about getting 10, maybe 12. But 1 trade and everything goes to crap.
April 26th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Wait, I was counting the 1st 2 as well. 17 is damn near impossible.
April 26th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
For giggles, I’ll go on record. This was may pretty haphazard. I relied more on traditional positional strength and value vs. needs:
1 Colts Luck
2 Redskins (From Rams) Griffin
3 Vikings Kalil
4 Browns Tannehill
5 Buccaneers Richardson
6 Rams (From Redskins) Blackmon
7 Jaguars Claiborne
8 Dolphins Cox
9 Panthers Floyd
10 Bills Gilmore
11 Chiefs Decastro
12 Seahawks Ingram
13 Cardinals Fleener
14 Cowboys Barron
15 Eagles Martin
16 Jets Upshaw
17 Bengals (From Raiders) Jenkins
18 Chargers Randle
19 Bears Reiff
20 Titans Kuechly
21 Bengals Adams
22 Browns (From Falcons) Hill
23 Lions Glenn
24 Steelers Kirkpatrick
25 Broncos Mercilus
26 Texans Jones
27 Patriots (From Saints) Coples
28 Packers Massie
29 Ravens Konz
30 49ers Martin
31 Patriots Brockers
32 Giants Wright
April 26th, 2012 at 5:51 PM
If you really want a mock draft to be right, wouldn’t it look something like this?
1 – Luck
2 – Griffin
3 – Kalil
4 – Kalil
5 – Kalil
6 – Blackmon
7 – Blackmon
8 – Blackmon
etc etc… wouldn’t you have a pretty good shot to be the average 5 or whatever picks a person gets right if you just pick the guys who you know are in a range, and blanket them.
April 27th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
Too bad Young J didn’t take my proposed bet. Not even close.
