The Young, Talented Kansas City Royals are Still Amusingly Terrible (11 Losses in a Row)
The Kansas City Royals are 3-13 and losers of 11 straight. They own the worst record in all of baseball and have already pulled back on their highly embarrassing “Our Time” marketing campaign. The seemingly hopeless franchise also just became the first team to lose 10 straight games at home since 1913. If you haven’t popped a few pain killers yet, I commend you.
In keeping with the theme of widespread deflation, promising second year player Eric Hosmer, less than a month into the season, has made the decision to quit Twitter citing “it’s just not important” and that he just wants to play baseball. Sounds like a fragile young fellow. What happened to six years of shrewd drafting, developing young players, and a world of promise? Here’s famed deer-killer manager Ned Yost:
“These last 10 or 11 games have felt like a lifetime, I’m not going to lie to you. It’s felt like three summers, this home stand alone. But you can’t get caught up in 10 or 11 games over the course of a 162-game season.”
For a guy whose job is to remain optimistic, Yost sounds like someone about to start an impressive bonfire with his book of season tickets.
Some will say we’re not even out of April yet, but this is a franchise with preexisting, gaping flesh wounds in all the wrong places. Endless disappointment is almost expected at this point. If the home losing streak extends to 15 or so, I assume it’s more than acceptable to start talking contraction.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though, so long as you put stock into SI’s MLB Power Rankings, where the Royals are sitting comfortably at No. 7. Why? Because apparently they don’t really have to play much better to start winning games, they just need to start delivering in the clutch. Sounds easy enough. Throw that puppy on the whiteboard and we’re all set. But really, a 3-13 team ranked 7th out of 30? That’s almost as offensive as Ned Yost’s adoration of Jeff Foxworthy.

People tried to shame me last fall because I said the Royals would suck. I’m loving this. As long as the Royals are in the Glass family… fuck ‘em.

Dayton Moore = GM
Ned Yost = Manager

If this is Yardwork, I’d like to commend Peavy on a complete game shutout (shutup about it being against the A’s in Oakland) as the White Sox win their fourth in a row. They have the third best run differential in the AL. It’s especially encouraging because Dunn and Rios are coming around and the White Sox usually enjoy sucking in April.

I’m not a Royals fan but I can certainly feel their pain. I’m floored to learn that the O’s many massive losing streaks of the last 25 years haven’t included any streaks of 10 straight losses at home
April 24th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Keep rollin KC. Tribe needs the sweep this week to keep pressure on the Tigers. Gotta get that home record turned around(1-4). Lets go Choo you son of a bitch.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Meanwhile, the Brewers are 18-0 at Miller Park when Zack Greinke starts.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Phillies fucking suck right now. Bring up Dom Brown and take Juan Pierre out behind the tool shed and put him down.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Pitching and injuries have killed and will continue to kill this team. Good core in Hosmer, Gordon, and Butler, but when your closer is gone, your bullpen is meh, and your SP is terrible, you are never going to win many games.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
This.
Oh, and the King of No Pants squad is just thoroughly dominating after 3 weeks.

No, I’d rather not hear his name any more than I already have to. He’s tearing up AAA again.
He is the quintessential AAAA player. Too good for the minors, but TERRIBLE in the bigs.
Hey TBL, when looking for the definition of a bust, Matt LaPorta is your guy.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
pssh…anyone can throw a ball at a pigeon. try hitting one with a golf ball.
/”anyone” can’t do either
April 24th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Aren’t Chiz and Phelps doing pretty well in AAA?
April 24th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
So a bunch of kids who’ve only started playing as a team this year are having issues putting it all together?
It’s still awful to be losing 11 in a row. Clearly. But let’s see how they’re doing by mid-late May. If they’re still sucking then, we can write them off then.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Bring up Dom Brown
They really need to do this. At this point at least hope he sparks the offense a little until Howard or Utley is back. What have they got to lose?
April 24th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Chiz hitting well, but not walking. The FO has asked him to be more patient at the plate to get rid of some of the (gaping) holes in his swing. The concern is that he hasn’t heard them and is hacking away at a bigger clip than before.
Phelps is playing well. I would expect a call up at some point in time when the injury bug hits. I think they are trying to make him another Casey Blake who can play everywhere.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
At least for the 19 losing seasons in a row they’ve had, they were the worst team in the league for 3 of them. That’s not too bad I guess.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
As the BNL said, it’s all been done before.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Yost brick was on me. Also: I begged Hernia to use the word “contract.”
seriously – we lose the Pirates and Royals and nobody outside of those cities misses a damn thing.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
im surprised flacco didn’t stare at the clay pigeons for so long, troy polamalu could come in and break the pass up.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Nothing to lose, and with Pence potentially having a shoulder issue as well, it’s time to bring him up, and deal with the pain. It has to be better than limp-dick hitting Juan Pierre.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
also, yes, the new yardwork will feature topics rather than games. you can lobby Tim for what you want the topic to be …
ultimately, his call.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
LOGISTICS.
sorry…wrong argument.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
They are so insignificant to your Yankees. Why do you even care? You made it well known that you don’t even like baseball.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
seriously – we lose the Pirates and Royals and nobody outside of those cities misses a damn thing.
So MLB should just contract teams that arent good even though they are financially viable?
April 24th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I would like to send Kendrick a gift basket for welcoming Jupton to the 2012 season.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
I love that picture.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Then why is Boyz II Men playing in PNC Park after a Pirates game this summer? We still move the early 90s needle.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Still impressive
April 24th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
seriously – we lose the Pirates and Royals and nobody outside of those cities misses a damn thing.
Disagree. For one, I’m pretty sure those teams do ok on a balance sheet. For two, they add value in merchandising and TV rights (in spite of terrible national ratings). For three, they have minor league affiliates that would lose at least half of their value without MLB affiliation. It’s actually much easier from a business standpoint to contract an NBA team and, witness the Hornets & Bobcats still existing, that’s already a mountain of shit.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
here’s something baseball related that’s more interesting than the royals
April 24th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
no doubt…i was just being an asshole.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
I actually think this is sound reasoning.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
seriously – we lose the Pirates and Royals and nobody outside of those cities misses a damn thing.
Same could be said for Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Hornets/Sacramento Kings right?
April 24th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
seriously – we lose the Pirates and Royals and nobody outside of those cities misses a damn thing.
Wouldn’t then that mean that the next two bottom-rung teams move into their slots?
At some point, you would contract MLB to just 8-10 teams.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
How about a topic AND some scores, like yesterday (scores at the bottom of the Tigers/Rangers blown call)? It’s not as good as a full Yardwork, but better than a baseball topic that floats entirely independent of the scores from last night.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
not necessarily a bad thing.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I’m going to unfurl my Jump to Conclusions mat…
…but I’d say one of the many, many reasons I’m sure Mr. Ryan has for switching Yardwork formats is that now he can prepare his post ahead of time and not have to wait for the games to be finished.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
I can do that like yesterday’s. Had some technical issues earlier that overwhelmed me like that giant burger on the outfield wall.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
now he can prepare his post ahead of time and not have to wait for the games to be finished.
Yep. He’s already got the next 6 days of Royals losses filed
April 24th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Much appreciated. I will need a place to vent about the White Sox during the summer.
/little reverse jinx
April 24th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Sure. Baseball should be an 8 team league. 2 in NY, 2 in Chi, 2 in LA, 1 in STL for everyone in every Midwestern State and 1 in Miami so that we can all enjoy that stupid ass HR statue for the rest of time.
See how much sense that makes?

April 24th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Ha. That would be pretty lame. I wrote this post this morning.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Is this how baseball will be covered from here on out? I’m just asking because it’s all I really come here for anymore.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Rich coming from the guy with the Astros logo.
They have the exact same amount of World Series titles over the last 50 years. And the Astros have been to a World Series more recently.

SC, there will be scores and random notes at the end regarding the game from the previous night.

I like the beekeeper’s idea. That would be great. I would enjoy if Jason Lisk wrote some stats related posts once the sample size of the season gets larger. Can he do that too?

You must be one of those “succeed under pressure types”.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Great caption.
The Royals can’t be this bad all season. They just can’t. And in response to the idea of contraction, we’ve just made it so that all the divisions have five teams and there’s an equal playing field for making the playoffs in the AL West/NL Central. You contract two teams and you screw that up. Among a great many other things (owners kinda make money off those teams, MLBAM, revenue sharing, the draft etc.)
April 24th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
beekeeper ben, some comment please
April 24th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Stark brings up some great points on the minor league affiliates too.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
mantis – what’s up with Clifton? Think he’ll be activated on May 4th when he’s eligible? I saw he played catch yesterday and I haven’t heard about an MRI being scheduled. If Wainwright throws out another clunker today, I’m down to Tommy Hanson and two shitty Red Sox starters. I need Cliff to be healthy.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
they have minor league affiliates that would lose at least half of their value without MLB affiliation.
i hope you don’t mean attendance wise. because if the affiliates are doing it right, they are selling the experience to families, not who is playing on the field. i could see affiliates that are close to the big club making a difference in affiliation, but otherwise, the average attendee at a minor league game is not there for the players/teams
April 24th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I’ve been reading mid-may is more likely considering the injury. Maybe longer. 4-5 weeks is the guess, though, so May 4th probably ain’t happening
April 24th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
SC – no news from my sources. They said he should be back after the 15 days. Chase took BP and was doing fielding practice yesterday. Swoons.
April 24th, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Since I have both my own bees and pollination area (that I upkeep without pesticide of any kind), I’m immune, hopefully, to CCD.
As far as Monsanto buying Beeologics (fantastic name), it seems very shady. Hopefully another firm can take up the torch of shedding the light on pesticides and the link to CCD because it seems like Beeologics is now part of big pesticide.

MiLB attendance has been great for years but they have some backing front the parent club. Indy leagues haven’t done nearly as well

19 year old Cuban the Cubs signed (Gerardo Concepcion) makes his MiLB debut tomorrow for the Peoria Chiefs. That MiLB.tv subscription already coming in handy. I’ve actually watched 3 I-Cubs games from start to finish this year. They are going to dominate the Pacific Coast League this year.

This is why most normal fans cant stand stat geeks. So they’re against clutch until they need it for their thesis.
April 24th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
wow Jake, tell us how you really feel!
If you elaborated this as an op-ed, I’d take a long, hard look at running it.
April 24th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Don’t. It appears to be a misunderstanding of the position that “stat geeks” take.
“Stat geeks,” or “people interested in truth/objectivity/reality” don’t deny the existence of clutch SITUATIONS. That certain spots in a game are more important than others is obviously true. And, by the way, it’s the basis for a lot of criticism of traditional bullpen usage (the 9th inning isn’t always more important than the 6th inning … so why use your best bullpen guy only then?).
What “stat geeks” are against is the notion that “clutch hitting” is a skill. In general, if you take a large enough sample size, you will see no difference in a player’s performance in “clutch” situations versus their performance in regular situations. Generally, good players perform better in the clutch than others because they perform better than others in all situations.
April 24th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
I like the beekeeper’s idea. That would be great. I would enjoy if Jason Lisk wrote some stats related posts once the sample size of the season gets larger. Can he do that too?
Once I get past the NFL draft, I’m sure I will start taking a look at some baseball topics.
