Nicely done Roundup, JMac.
Not trying to pick a fight, but I was wondering if you have addressed (and I missed it) or plan to address the Anthony Davis post from this weekend. Maybe its just not a big deal, but it seemed like an egregious error or even a ripoff.

Their computers lack SEC Speed. It seems the state created a polytechnic college in Tampa which is hoarding the tech funding resources. But for the state to eliminate computer sciences at their flagship school speaks to what a joke state colleges are in Florida. Tourism major, Hackey Sack minor: college the Florida way.

just went back and saw the post. had no clue what you were talking about … then scrolled down to the comments. As i mentioned Monday in the roundup – took off about 2 pm Friday for my anniversary. basically off the web (checked twitter a couple times to tweet out links) until i came home saturday, sat down at CPU to write, checked NBA happenings from Friday, saw Bynum news, checked Olympic roster and it made sense to write about Davis (who should be on the team).
after i posted, a few people noted on twitter Simmons was the 2nd to float the idea. Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News was 1st. i didn’t see either of them. last DeCourcy thing i read was his dumb, “Lebron choked because he never went to college & played in the F4.” Can’t remember the last time i clicked a Simmons mailbag.
the end. oh, funny part of the anniversary – was talking to Jerry O Connell & his wife about the site (he reads it). He thinks i write about the Jets too much (but he likes it – that’s his team) and misses the PM roundup. im sure the other 10 people who miss the PM roundup are stoked.

Jessica Chastain is stunning. (Love the redheads.) She was great in “The Debt.” Underrated movie, underrated actress.

Trip McNeeley misses the PM roundup? He was a sexual icon at Huntington high!

me and BBoB have something in common I guess.
April 24th, 2012 at 8:39 AM
Fair enough, thanks for the explanation. Definitely totally reasonable.
I think it’s funny that a commenter (can’t remember who) called that you were hanging out with O’Connell when you posted a shot of Rebecca Romijn for the Roundup. Also, I guess I’m one of the 10 that miss the PM Roundup. Bring that shit back!
April 24th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
Which commentator is Jerry O’Connell?
April 24th, 2012 at 8:40 AM

Pretty strong Whitlock column on journalism and the Bernie Fine case. [Fox Sports]
I’m thrilled you’re one of the 10 people left in America who correctly knows the difference between a “column” and a “story” or “article.” To go along with yesterday’s “Death of Facts” column, the general public not using proper nomenclature on articles and/or columns is a major pet peeve.
im sure the other 10 people who miss the PM roundup are stoked.
Maybe add another 0 at the end there, chief. Quick question: how many celebs/famous people are you on speaking terms with? What if all of them liked the PM Roundup? Surely, if the mighty Bilas asked you…
Yeah, I know I was just trying to stip it up. Varsity Blues also holds up really well.
I. Don’t. Want. Yer. Life!
April 24th, 2012 at 8:53 AM
Half of yesterday’s posts (“look at this picture of ________”) could have been nicely combined into a PM Roundup thus freeing up some space for posts about sports.

Didn’t Jerry O’Connell once write a piece for this site?
If I’m remembering correctly, it made “Fridays with Artie” seem like a good idea.

Jason has long said he doesn’t pay much attention to Simmons. And Simmons barely writes anything anymore and if he does have a column it goes up very late on Friday afternoons.

O’Connell peaked in Stand by Me, but was strong in his Tom Cruise impersonation videos.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
OT,
Did Halloween in Chicago last year with a group of friends as characters from Varsity Blues. I was Bud Kilmer – slicked back the hair with some gray, wore a headset and a whistle, and customized a polo with the team logo – glorious. We had Mox, the slutty teacher, the cheerleader, and Kilmer. It was too bad we didn’t have a gigantic friend to play Billy Bob.
This year it’s probably Dodgeball. I can’t decide between young Patches or old Patches.
/OT
Also, Dawkins is a HOF. I’m not sure about first ballot lock, but definitely a HOF.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
Brian Austin Green…legend.
Anyone remember last week’s thread where I said I get told I look like him all the time? Just sayin…
April 24th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
I’m a big Jamie Moyer fan (I’m a fan of any athlete still going that is older than I am), but there is no way he should be in the hall of fame.
He’s a “lock” because he deserves to be there, but I don’t have a ton of confidence the voters will do the right thing and put him in when the time comes. There are only a handful of safeties in the HOF right now and the fossils that vote on these things can be obstinate.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
Chris Carter proved that nobody is a first ballot lock.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
If I’m remembering correctly, it made “Fridays with Artie” seem like a good idea.
You gotta give FSV and USA Today credit. Even they thought Fridays with Artie was horrible.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
So many of those “famous” people were doing the dance horribly. I’ll forgive Mr. Belding and Taco for theirs.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:09 AM

Considering 5 of the top 10 most in-demand occupations (per US News) are IT related, this sounds like a perfectly logical decision by those fine folks in Gainesville.
Based on this sites performance and usability, I’m betting that TBL tech support comes from the newly non-existent U of F College of Computer Science.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
This is true. I enjoy the good posts, i.e., the Lisk posts, more than the other, but my use of this site is more about the comment section than the content of the posts.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
TBL’s response: “I ignore 99% of it. Commenters make up .05% of readers.”
Who are the other .05%?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
I’m challenging Matt Moriarty to a fight at 3:00 pm over by the TBL Learning Annex.
Unless there’s a PM roundup today…then we are pushing it back to 4:00.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Any chance Staal gets moved?
Bobby Lou on the move for sure. Florida, Tampa or perhaps the Blackhawks?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
I certainly hope those options contain some flame retardant pants.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
TBL, I think you’re actually more patient with the banhammer than you need to be when some of these guys shit directly into your facehole. But you do realize people can see what you write on Twitter, right? It’s not private. Marginalizing the group most invested in the site — a group that, if properly nurtured, essentially acts as a free viral marketing company — doesn’t seem like the best choice.
If you ignore most of the commenters, why not just write for a newspaper?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Matt Moriarty = Todd Charske
April 24th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Is it just the power that he checked him with? When guys go to the boards, it usually seems like there’s at least somewhat of a collision. I didn’t think he tried to put his face in the boards, so I have to assume it’s an obvious penalty due to how hard Hayes hit him?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:40 AM
I’m more curious about the remaining .90%.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
Yeah – I want to be nurtured!
April 24th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Prospective Twitter clients, like Applebee’s.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Chris Neil kicked that goal in last night. Can’t believe Toronto allowed that.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Is it just the power that he checked him with?
Nope, the issue with that hit is that checking from behind is illegal. Rozsival was not in a position to defend himself against (he didn’t see it coming). Had he not been injured it likely would have been 2 minutes for boarding.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
is anyone really hurt by this? sack up. who really gives a shit what TBL thinks about your internet persona or comments?
if that was sarcasm, I retract the previous three sentences.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
I like my Canon because it’ll use all Canon/Canon autofocus mount lenses. With Nikon, there’s a difference. Lower end DSLRs use a different autofocus system, so not all lenses are autofocus. Higher end can use all Nikjor sutofocus lenses.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
So maybe jason wants us to stop commenting. Yeah, that would make the site better.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
This DSLR shit has my head swimming. Poeple say go Canon, people say go Nikon. Nobody has concrete evidence, though.
Best thing to do is to go to a camera store, talk to someone who actually knows something and buy from somewhere that has a better price.
I’ve had an EOS Rebel for several years and it’s been working great. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either the Nikon or Canon.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Ugh. I hope not. But cannot blame him if he wanted to. Granted I think it would be a huge risk for a team to make him a number one center, but if he wants that role then I really cannot hold it against him.
Shero needs to find a way to move Martin and Michalek’s deals. A lot of people hated those deals when they were signed and with Martin they were dead the fuck on. Absolutely garbage contract. Going to have to trade for pennies on the dime to get him off the books, sadly.
Frankly I wouldn’t mind moving Orpik either.
Or Fleury.
Only people I give a shit about are Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Letang (unless he plays like he did in the playoffs again), and kind of sort of James Neal. Anyone else, outside of the young defenders, are movable assets. Blow the team up outside of its spine.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Considering 5 of the top 10 most in-demand occupations (per US News) are IT related, this sounds like a perfectly logical decision by those fine folks in Gainesville.
Haven’t read any of the articles. I read headlines and draw my own conclusions. Are they eliminating all computer science or are they just moving the courses to another department like engineering?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Any chance Staal gets moved?
Only if Ray Shero has an aneurysm.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Who are the other .05%?
I’m more curious about the remaining .90%.
Damn it. Math Fail on my part.
Speaking of the extremes… where is Dirt?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
sack up. who really gives a shit what TBL thinks about your internet persona or comments?
Wait, so TBL doesn’t care about my avatar or Mr. Perfect and a name that literally zero people have called me in real life?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Hurt probably isn’t the right word. My only point was that people were taking exception to that comment, and not the numbers comment.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
In case anyone is wondering, the Royals losing streak now stands at 11 games. Fucking assholes.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Last week he stated in the comments he was thinking about liquidating all of us and starting over for commenting.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Got it. I appreciate it, Geeezeus.
/goes back into hockey hibernation until the Blackhawks are playing again
April 24th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Agreed. As for the interference on that play, I thought Neil got shoved into Lundquist. The fact that the alleged interference was not even reviewable seemed lost on the announcers, who yammered on and on about it, without even noticing the huge soccer windup Neil took to deflect the puck into the net (which is obviously reviewable).
Lundquist losing his shit after the game was fantastic.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
A lot of people on here have tried to say that commenters drive the site. That is not even remotely true.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
That’s a rule that needs to change.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Any specific reason given?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Nice work. Pens beat all teams that didn’t make the playoffs and lost to all the teams that did. Thank you for making my point.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Plenty of teams would like to have him. Including the one I root for.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Unless you ask a question about comparing college basketball coaches and players or Manning rumors not being on the Broncos website. That seems to draw some ire.
White Sox four in a row and four over .500. Third best run differential, after the Rangers and Yankees, in the AL. It probably won’t last, but I’ll enjoy it while it does.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
A lot of people on here have tried to say that commenters drive the site. That is not even remotely true.

April 24th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
I have the Sony a230k. it’s a great camera and all of my old minolta lenses work with it (Sony bought Minolta).
unless you’re a really, really good photographer, your choice between Canon, Nikon, or Sony does not matter. do yourself a favor and figure out how much you’re willing to spend first. then price a DSLR and a few accessories like an extra lens or two. the most popular is probably Canon and then Nikon and then Sony so you’ll likely have a few more accessories options with a Canon than the other two, but not by much.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
I’ve really been enjoying CBC when they have games on. Finally have CBC HD. About damn time Comcast.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
Perhaps I hold the commenters in too high of regard, but I know that the comments/commenting are what has kept me coming back. Hell, it’s what caught my attention back in 2006 when I first started reading.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:51 AM
What this boils down to is — Would you go to TBL to get your sports news with comments disabled?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
He was 100 percent right, but he will be a little lighter in the wallet for it.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
he would go #3 to the possibility of this.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
If there’s a used camera store, go there. Lots of used DSL bodies & lenses to work with, and huge savings. Heck, even a pawn shop would work.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
I like the guy that tweeted TBL to let him know that the commenters are out of control and way too self-righteous (which was later retweeted by Duffy).
April 24th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Vancouver – Beat them
St. Louis – OT loss
Phoenix – Beat them
Detroit – Loss
Chicago – Beat them
San Jose – OT Loss
LA – Beat them.
Solid, solid point
April 24th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
I think he is tired of people complaining in the comments. Although even if you started over that wouldn’t stop, unless you went Eastern bloc on the commenters. Also, he mentioned that commenters don’t drive the site, which I think is true, but a lot of “loyal” readers who have started a great little corner of the internet here.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Well….the “Ottawa Conspiracy” bit was over the top, but yeah, he was accurate in that that probably shouldn’t have been a goal for, at least, a couple of reasons.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Oh yeah beat Nashville too.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
no. but I also don’t care that Jace trivializes comments and those who write them while enjoying the tweeter fellatio.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Nope. Back to DS, SB Nation, Pro talk, etc.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
You’re probably right, but I’d love to see what would happen to the site traffic if he closed the comments for good. I mean, rarely is there anything truly unique or wildly interesting or earth-shattering that’s posted here that would make the site a must-read for me but for the comments.
I don’t exaggerate when I say I largely come here for the comments, and I don’t even comment that much anymore.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Oh yeah beat Nashville too.
Lost to the Oilers though. Surely a sign of things to come.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Commenters don’t drive this site at all. It’s all about SEO. J-Mac is going the Bleacher Report route, and I don’t blame him.
Chase that paper.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
People come here for the sports news?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
OT wins in October and November and a loss to Edmonton. Nice work, Pens.

/alliteration!!!!!
//and fantasy!!!!
April 24th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
Hell no. I don’t know that anyone would frequent one of their favorite blogs without the opportunity to leave an opinion/pithy comment.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I meant comments don’t drive the site traffic. If you just look at the traffic numbers compared to the comments it’s kind of a no brainer.
ESPN gets how many millions of hits and most of the articles on there don’t have comments outside of the thousands unless it’s a massive story.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
I can guarantee I wouldn’t visit this site at all if commenting was closed.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:58 AM

April 24th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
Are the Oilers gonna get a goalie and some d help?
April 24th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
LOL. I wonder how we’re self-righteous and out of control. I would seriously like to hear an explanation on this.
Also, everything Mike NYC just said.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
And two wins down the stretch against the two teams that knocked out your two teams.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
I’m buying a refurb for sure. Probably willing to drop $900 between body, a couple lenses to cover whatever I do, and a flash. Looking at the Nikon D5100 and Canon Rebel T2i right now. Sony a55 looks kinda cool, too.
My old man is a Pentax guy. Still has the 35mm he bought in Germany in 1970. He found a K-1000 over the weekend at a thrift store for $2 and it works perfectly. I’ve kicked around going the film route just because of that.
April 24th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
But the people on the twitters are so nice. That sinkhole is one big reach around, oooh, retweet me, ooo, i retweeted that, oooh we think exactly alike and are bestest of friends.
Fuck that noise, real people disagree and do so in more than 140 characters.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:00 AM

You clueless buffoon. Seriously though, the number one tip I can give is to name them all. It brings a sense of personality to the hives.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Nah. I’d probably visit from time to time, but I really come here to hang out with you guys.
/group hug
All of this. Do people complain? Sure. But people complain everywhere. We pretty much “police our own” if someone gets out of line/douchy, but I don’t get all this self rightous stuff. I’m just here to have a good time and laugh at Dirt’s stories.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Agreed.
But how many active commenters are there? A few hundred?
I mean Deadspin’s traffic still kept going up even after AJ killed off all the commenters back in the day. They only saw a dip, if I remember correctly, when Gawker unleashed the worst redesign ever.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Yeah, but ESPN comment section is the trailer park of sports site commenting. A bunch of random morons spouting uneducated nonsense. At least here, you recognize the names.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
No.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM

I don’t exaggerate when I say I largely come here for the comments, and I don’t even comment that much anymore.
I agree. I rarely comment, but read the comments daily. As far as content on the site, I read the Round-Up, Lisk posts, Duffy soccer posts, and I used to read Yard Work (RIP). If there were no comments here, I would never visit this site.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
The explanation is “let me say something that this guy with 60k followers will surely love and will consider RT’ing so I can pick up some new followers”.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
… I can kind of see the self-righteous comments now.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
I don’t comment at EDSBS. I go there though cause it’s funny and informative.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
lets stop the navel gazing regarding the commenting issue…we all know what the score is. it’s like a local starbucks…the owner only cares about selling coffee, but the coffee’s only a small part of the reason the regulars come every day.

April 24th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Don’t go to film. Dying medium.
Remember what I said about some Nikon cameras lacking an autofocus motor? That’s one of them. If you want autofocus, that limits you to a small number of lenses.

Compared to the cesspools of local newspaper sites, or ESPN, we are much much better. We self-police fairly well and just because we disagree with Jason, doesn’t mean we don’t come here for the community.

I think that’s low. About a year or so ago I went through an entire (ordinary) week and counted over 200 commenters. I’m guessing maybe 100 “regulars”? Then again, I guess that depends on your definition of regular.

I can tell you that if not for the commenters I would have no reason to visit anymore. I can get second-rate sports and pop culture commentary elsewhere but the community here is what keeps me coming back. And I say that as someone who doesn’t comment all that much myself.

April 24th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
io9 is good except for the fact that they clearly schill for certain movies. I read gizmodo and lifehacker, but the gizmodo writers are ridiculously catty with the tech stuff. Gawker is solid, Jezebel I will look at just to remind myself that bitches be crazy.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
I ignore 99% of the comments as well… mainly because I don’t have time to read through them all while attempting to actually be productive. If I had to guess, that’s TBL’s real reason as well. Don’t flatter yourselves guys – I actually enjoy reading the comments section – but I’m sure TBL understands that if you guys are gone – more will come. Not many commenters have actually lasted 6 years since the site launched, and yet TBL continues to do well. Amazing.

April 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
It’s ashamed that this may be true.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
But you can though. I wouldn’t go bigger than 11×17 for 400 ISO film. Faster than that, and you’re really getting into resolution loss.
April 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Part of this is probably because there weren’t many commenters 6 years ago.
I’ve been a faithful reader of both site/comments since the Harold Reynolds incident. IMHO I think the comments section was much better 3-5 years ago. Part of that I’m sure is TBL’s lack of interest in it. He used to really hold things together in here. That was pre-twitter though – so maybe twitter has changed how he approaches the comments section as well. Just a guess.

This makes me sad for the next generation.

The main thing about TBL’s comments on twitter is that do you guys remember when he used to joke about us clicking on the ads? Back in those days, he relied on his faithful to help him out. Then when the same crew started to critique his work, shit went downhill and he got defensive.

If we don’t matter, why have a Commenter Bill of Rights?

No, Clamps, no clamps.

it’s the same in music…the next generation has all this technology at their fingertips, they’ll just use one keyboard rather than an original fender rhodes, a hammond b3, moog, etc.
and with the technology in terms of writing scores on computers, composers won’t have the joy of handwriting their compositions. i always enjoyed that, for some strange reason…the “penmanship” of the notes on the page, the swirl of the treble clef, the gentle soop of eighth notes…sigh.

please…those were the commenter’s articles of confederation.

Yea I mean I don’t disagree with you. And the thing about twitter is definitely true. I think it’s changed his approach and many other veteran commenters. TBLAD used to be epic probably 5 out of 7 nights 3 years ago.

This is important, and I think that’s why some of the commenters aren’t going to be so happy when TBL makes a comment like that. I remember those days, and I also remember when he was far more interactive. Now we don’t matter?
/you’ve changed, bro. you’ve changed.
