Seth Greenberg Is Reportedly Out At Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech has called a press conference for 4 pm today. When inquiries were made of Seth Greenberg, he said “I’m still employed” and that he had no idea what the press conference was about. David Teel of the Hampton Press, however, now reports that according to sources, the press conference is about a change in the head basketball coach for the men’s team. Whoops!
Looks like Seth Greenberg thought he was in the field again, only to just miss out. Greenberg has had a history at Virginia Tech coming up just short of the NCAA tournament, and has been Dick Vitale’s favorite many a year when debating who should have gotten into the tournament. Virginia Tech has only made one NCAA tournament under Greenberg in nine seasons (2007, second round) and finished with a losing record for the first time since 2006.
The fact that Virginia Tech decided to make a change from media favorite Greenberg is not surprising. The timing most definitely is. There has to be more to the story yet to come. The season has been over a month (the Hokies’ last game was 45 days ago) and Virginia Tech basically cost itself time in a coaching search by waiting until the end of April.

April 23rd, 2012 at 2:43 PM
this’d be cooler if it were mike greenburg and instead of being fired, he was thrown on a judas chair.

Bizzare. Maybe he was playing hide the sausage with the equipment manager that has a second job at Hooters.

If there is a God, ESPN will hire him to talk about the tourney selection process.

You could have had the SMU job and $2.5 million a year Seth. Now you’re unemployed. Have fun.
April 23rd, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Basketball coach at a football school = money. You can hang around damn near a decade with one tourney appearance.

Spencer, the pot signal has been sent. The independently wealthy, good looking, and model fucking commenters demand a fake interview. Get to it.

This is apparently about running back depth. not Seth
April 23rd, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Leonard Hamilton’s made a career out of this.
April 23rd, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Didn’t he lose almost all of his assistant coaches this year? Seems like those guys always know when to bolt.

Larry Brown’s press conference today was surreal.

That’s a hell of a reason to fire the basketball coach

reminds me of a joke involving a lisp and fellatio but i don’t feel like typing it

Sounds like something a football school not firing their basketball coach would do.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:01 PM
I’d be happy if this was true. I’m sick of watching Greenburg’s shitty “offense”.

They even have a men’s team too.

We’ve got uniforms and everything. It’s pretty great!
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Well that’s not nearly as exciting as I was hoping for, but it’s a smart move by Jeff Long. Get a proven head coach (albeit an average one) who knows offense to run the show for a year while you go out and get a good coach come December.

John L. Smith
The connection…
After two years of broadcasting, Smith returned to the sidelines in 2009 as the special teams coach at the University of Arkansas under head coach Bobby Petrino, his former assistant.[8] Following his third year at Arkansas, Smith left to lead his fifth Division I program at his alma mater, Weber State, an FCS program in the Big Sky Conference.[9]

today on cold call mondays…todd mcshay!
TBL: hi, mr. mcshay, this is jason mcintyre from the big lead.
mcshay: sup.
TBL: i called to ask you how you evaluate draft prospects, but first i wanted to direct you to this post where i directed you to another column when asking a different question.
mcshay: sorry, what was the original question?
TBL: in your november mock draft…
mcshay: which one?
TBL: …you had rey maulaluga going ninth, but the day before on sportscenter, you said you’d take him first overall…
mcshay: it was insanely early in the process…
TBL: …but then later you were jimmy clausen’s biggest supporter. what gives?
mcshay: it’s…it’s not like i just post every possible permutation or anyth…
TBL: it’s not?
mcshay: at least i don’t put out a series of mock drafts ignoring non-BCS players like your NBA mocks without internationals.
TBL: HOW’D I GET THIS NUMBER?
mcshay: bilas.
TBL: so…send pics of your cock to anyone?
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:10 PM
It’s a smart move, though. They weren’t getting a great coach now, but they can certainly get one in December. Now they have a coach who has been the head man before and understands what to do. This let’s Long begin his search process now. Names I would put on my list:
Assistants:
Kirby Smart: Knows the south, Saban’s chief disciple and is one of, if not THE best recruiter in the country.
Manny Diaz: Dude has been money everywhere he’s been, from small Middle Tenn State to massive Texas.
Bud Foster: He’s been too consistent for too long not to be a good coach.
Head Coaches:
Charlie Strong: Dude can flat out coach and he can recruit the South.
Gary Patterson: He’s one of the best coaches in football, but now that TCU is in the B12, getting him out of TCU will be tough.

if anyone needs me, I’ll be in the bathroom giving myself a swirlie.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Spencer, that’s amazing.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:11 PM
john l smith? THIS john l smith? or this one?
it’s funny, and i know i don’t speak for everyone, but my lasting thought of john l smith was precisely the opposite of “this guy understands what to do.”
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Well fucking played.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:13 PM
He’s not their to lead a program for a year. He’s there for the next 9 months. That’s it. He knows what to do from an admin standpoint is what I meant. The peripheral shit that comes with being a head coach.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:14 PM
Fuck.

John L. Smith’s wiki currently has this gem on it: Head Coach at UPig 2012-and beyond. When asked about the players he stated, 5.7 stars means UPig staaaaaaaacked, SEC fuuuuu****
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:15 PM
I think the bloom is off of that particular rose. He’s now ventured into “there must be a reason he hasn’t gotten a head job already” territory. The Arkansas job is too big for this particular guy’s first head coaching foray.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:16 PM
+ 9 mock drafts to you kind sir
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Unless Greenberg did someone at least as hot as the motorcycle model, this is much ado about nothing.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:16 PM
you know this old story is coming….john L yelled at me once at U of Idaho
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I agree with this, but I would interview him to see this for myself. My first call with any job would be to Chris Petersen and then once he said no I’d go on to the rest of my list.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:20 PM
I hope it’s not the Sandusky part of that territory.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:23 PM
I guess it makes sense, as he was here as special teams coach for three years so he knows the area, staff, players, etc. well. just never been impressed with his as a coach.

Leonard Hamilton who has won >19 games at FSU 8 out of 10 years? Who has been to the Big Dance 4 consecutive years? Who just won the ACC? He’s made a career by winning in the ACC.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Hamilton won at Miami and FSU…eventually. He missed the tournament his first 7 seasons at Miami. He missed the tournament his first 6 seasons at Florida State. At most places he would’ve gotten fired before turning it around.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Yes but “missed the tournament” is not grounds for termination in its own right. You have to look at the circumstances surrounding the year. I don’t know much about his time at UM, but the FSU teams improved after he replaced Steve Robinson. They got screwed (always subjective) by the selection committee a couple of times at the beginning, and have been the 3rd best ACC team for a number of years now.
