there’s a big difference in your photos if you start with a zoom lens w/o knowing how to use it versus learning how to shoot then using a zoom lens.

I’d like to keep it under $600 for the camera and a solid walk-around lens (18-55 or 18-70).

don’t be afraid to look for a cheaper used camera that might be a generation old, or take advantage of cameras about to be phased out. The d300s by Nikon will be replaced soon but it’s an amazing camera.

The d90 was just replaced but still a great camera and can give you some great value if you want something in between entry level and top of the line DX sensors.

to expand, i personally like Nikon. the D300s fits well in my larger hands and i’ve been satisfied owning it for the past two years.

The camera has more “manual” settings than the models below it and after taking a few classes about what does what on a camera and how to apply it to shooting i’ve really grown into the camera.

I got a Nikkon 3100 for my birthday. I love it. It’s plenty of camera for what I will be doing with it. The 5100 is the bigger one which I assume is better, but I just didn’t need anything bigger. I do want to upgrade my lens, though.
