NFL Draft: Miami Owner Stephen Ross Wants Ryan Tannehill, But Will He Give the Ultimatum to Take Him?
Last night, Pro Football Talk reported that Miami owner Stephen Ross is the person pushing hardest in the organization for Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald cited a “very, very, very highly placed source” (Ireland?) who said that Ross that the report was not true. Then Peter King’s MMQB touched on the issue, and said that he heard the same thing: Ross wants the Dolphins to pick Tannehill.
Just as interesting, King says that while new offensive coordinator Mike Sherman likes Tannehill, he “isn’t standing on the table for him.” The Dolphins have coaches who tutored two of the available quarterbacks this offseason. Head coach Joe Philbin worked with Matt Flynn. He likewise didn’t stand on the table for his former player, and Flynn ended up signing with Seattle when many thought that he could re-unite in Miami after Manning said no.
The owner probably shouldn’t be dictating who the team takes, especially if it is Stephen Ross. However, if he wants the player, he should get him. If he really wants him but they do not draft Tannehill, this feels like a scapegoat situation. If it gets out that the owner wants Tannehill, and they don’t take him, Ross can point the finger later.
Here’s my take on the Tannehill situation. I don’t see him going top six. I think there are clear star players at other positions after the two top quarterbacks are taken, and those teams aren’t going to take the risk and no one is trading up to get Tannehill before 6. Jacksonville isn’t taking him, but will hope to entice a trade in front of Miami. Miami might take him, but we thought that was a no-brainer several years ago with Brady Quinn, and it didn’t happen. If Miami passes, all bets are off. Everyone seems to think that Seattle is definitely taking him at 12, but they did just sign Flynn. I think it’s more likely than not that he goes at 8, but I could see scenarios where he drops into the late teens before someone trades in front of the Browns’ second pick at 22.

between ross stumping for tannehill and dave brandon giving up a home game to take a financial bath to get bludgeoned by alabama, michigan seems gayer than a bag of dicks.

Perhaps King only meant that Sherman wasn’t literally standing upon a table when they were discussing the draft.

Doesn’t the owner always win these little battles?

I love when owners think they know more than the football people. That’s why Dallas hasn’t done shit since JJ left a super bowl team for Switzer. Enjoy last place in the AFC East for a while Miami.

I think they should. They CTC.

I agree that this is a scapegoat situation but it seems more likely that it’s Ireland leaking this so that Ross can be the scapegoat. If/when Tannehill busts, Ireland will be the one pointing the finger saying “I didn’t want him but my owner made me do it”

its dumbass, contradictory speculation like this that makes me hate pre draft ANYTHING.

Mickey Loomis will be eavesdropping their war room.

Rumor has it that we should hear something from the Dolphins and Browns around 8 o’clock. This will really be a pivotal point for both teams in deciding if they pick Tanannenhil.

yes, and shockingly enough these battles always end in shitty seasons for those teams.

I wonder what the group of celebrity owners want? That next check in the mail! Pathetic franchise .

And the owner will say, “You’re fired.”

I might be reading this wrong, but isn’t the “very highly placed source” denying the report (i.e. saying that Ross isn’t pushing for Tannehill)? And then King comes back and says well I’ve heard that Ross is pushing for Tannehill after all.

I’m assuming if Tannehill is a bust for Miami that Ireland will be fired anyway and his finger pointing will be an attempt to prove his failures in Miami were not his fault. It would be an effort to save his rep, not his job.

Armando Salguero writes for the Miami Herald and from his source, he got the word back from one of them who vehemently denied the report. The source is very, very, very high up in the Dolphins organization. He also writes that “it’s possible Florio and King are totally wrong, as my source and Ireland are saying. On the other hand, it is possible my source is trying to use me (bad idea because that would make me very angry and the Dolphins shouldn’t want me writing angry because I’m good at it) and thus I would be wrong.”
Plus, they cut DE Phillip Merling today which might pave the way for them to draft a DE in the 1st round. Who the hell knows? I still like taking Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd at the 8 spot.
