Blown Call Cost the Tigers a Game, But Jim Leyland Still Doesn’t Want Instant Replay
The Rangers beat the Tigers 3-2 in 11 innings Sunday thanks to a suicide squeeze from Alberto Gonzalez that gave Texas the go-ahead run. The only problem is that the ball glanced off Gonzalez’s knee after making contact, though none of the umpires saw it happen. Gonzalez would later admit as much, but wisely kept running to sell the play.
Amazingly, none of this managed to irk the frequently cantankerous Jim Leyland enough for him to call for MLB to expand instant replay, as Don Mattingly did last week.
“That’s part of the game,” Leyland said. “Sometimes you get a call like that, and sometimes you don’t.”
Does it have to be though? Pivotal points in a game, you know like extra innings of a tie baseball game, sure as hell seem like one of the logical places to allow for a review by the umpiring crew.
Stubbornly sticking to this ‘what you see if what you get’ mantra feels staler than Tony La Russa’s out of touch haircut. But as long as the always delicate “tradition of baseball” is thrown into the mix when discussing such an otherwise obvious change, we’re in for the usual uphill battle.

In other baseball news, Toronto’s Ricky Romero was tremendous (8 IP, 2 ER) in a 5-3 win over the nearly-deceased Royals, the Orioles are still over .500, the offensively inept and thoroughly beat up Phillies are now all by their lonesome in last place, and Matt Kemp — who’s been owning everyone — went hitless for the first time in 10 games in a 12-0 loss to the Astros. Yes, the Astros.

More in depth replay would eliminate the Tigers from being able to do things like have Kenny Rogers scuffing the ball like a mother fucker, no surprise. Cheating ass Detroitians.

I have to respect that. It’s hard to stick to your guns when it shoots you in the foot. Would be more interested to see how he’d respond if this happened in September and the Tigers were fighting to make the playoffs though.

Part of me wants an instant replay, but part of me knows that this would just lengthen the games and turn off the casual observer.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:14 AM
It is amazing that the 67 year old manager immediately saw what happened w/o replay but none of the umpires had a freaking clue. Even Brandon Inge saw it and he was likely just looking forward to his next strikeout.
The Rangers do not need help.

It’s ok, these ‘old school’ managers are a dying breed and will be out of baseball soon enough.

For those that call for instant replays…why have umpires at all?
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Wonder if he’d feel that way in Game 7 on ALCS for the right to go to the World Series. He may feel that way now during the 14th game of the season (8.6%) of the season played out, but may feel different with much more at stake later in the playoffs. I get what he’s saying, these things have a way of evening out, but I think instant replay has some place in MLB

Robot Umpires !

Robot umpires, robot players, robot announcers. No more humans in baseball at all, please.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Obviously the rational reaction to using technology in a timely manner to get important calls correct is to scream about robots.

is he speaking for gallaraga?

This seems like a big jump from where others are going. Kind of a weak “slippery slope” style argument.

there could be fan voting by text, a la american idol, and that would drive even more fans to watch because they wouldn;t want to get outvoted by the other team’s fans on close calls

I still think an additional umpire up in the booth looking at the TV replays could make these calls in a matter of seconds. No need for the other 4 fatasses to jog to the dug out, sit down and catch their breath, eat a hot dog, check the replay, and walk back out on the field like they do for the home run replays.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:25 AM
All of this right here. That makes too much sense though.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Agreed. Or they could do the war room @ mlb headquarters ala hockey.

I think “Robot Joe Buck” was release years ago. Still waiting for the upgrade that includes emotion.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:26 AM
I like the idea of giving managers the ability to challenge calls made on the basepaths.
If anything it adds more of the human element to the game. Tho I’m guessing people would then want to expand that to include balls/strikes/ and check swings.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:30 AM
I laughed.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Yup.
Same with NFL. I think CFB gets it right with a replay official in the booth.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:30 AM
No, it’s a slippery slope on both sides. What if Game 7 of the World Series is decided by a last pitch called strike on a ball that’s a few itches off the plate…they’d show the strike-cam replay where the camera/computers show it was a clear strike and I’d imagine there would be a more significant uprising to use the computers to call balls/strikes as well.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:31 AM
no bigger waste of time than a manager coming out to argue. has a call ever been changed? i know, part of the game, stick up for your players, blahblah
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:31 AM
ala hockey.
great role model there

Sounds good to me. Progress is taking people’s jobs and breaking up unions. Am I right???

Still waiting for side view of check swing on final out of Humbers perfect game
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:33 AM
What would be so wrong with that?
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I’d be really interested in a statistical analysis of % of subsequent borderline calls a team gets after their manager argues with an umpire. Because that’s the logic they use.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:34 AM
When the unions are protecting jobs that literally millions of people could do at a cheaper salary, then yes.
No reason for umpires to make 6 figures. None.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Well, it does sometimes work if they are able to get umpire that made the call to confer with the other umpires

there is one. mully/hanley put it up on their fb page, so it’s probably also at the score site. they said the head of the bat def wrent through the zone

Many calls have been changed…usually when the manager convinces the umpire that made the call to consult the other umps.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:38 AM
I agree, actually. It’s pretty ridiculous that tennis of all sports made a move to computer replay before most others.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
To be fair, MLB already broke the umpire’s union. That’s why that fatass in Philly is now “umpiring” the Wing Bowl and not MLB games.
April 23rd, 2012 at 11:54 AM
The Rangers are quite good at baseball. Positive run differentials in the AL:
Rangers +52
Yankees +17
White Sox +14
Blue Jays +8
Tigers +5
Indians +2

that fatass in Philly died a few years ago, eric Gregg
April 23rd, 2012 at 12:03 PM
To be more fair, the umpires broke their own union, then immediately reformed when they realized that MLB was thrilled at their idea of mass resignations.

Right, they formed a new union that is basically an arm of the Commissioner’s office. I’d say they’ve pretty well cowed.
