Arkansas Hired John L. Smith as Interim Head Coach For 2012 Season
Arkansas has hired former assistant coach John L. Smith to replace Bobby Petrino as head coach on an interim basis for the 2012 season. Smith, a head coach from 1989 to 2006, joined Bobby Petrino’s staff as special teams coach from 2009 to 2011. He had been hired by his alma mater Weber State to be head coach in December.
Smith, 63, has extensive head coaching experience, though the latter part is not exactly a credit to him. He led Louisville to two Conference USA titles and a Top 20 finish from 1998 to 2002 before taking the Michigan State job. He finished 8-5 with the Spartans his first season, but won just 14 games in the three seasons after that and was fired during the 2006 season.
On a permanent basis, this would be shocking, though as an interm move it makes sense. Smith has coached an AQ level program. He’s a familiar with the university staff and players. On paper, Smith should stabilizing things, though, in perception, it is hard to picture John L. Smith beating out Miles and Saban in the SEC West. The hiring makes sense, though Arkansas fans can’t be enthused.
Here’s John L. Smith getting hired at Weber State.

I am not happy.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:27 PM
no harder than picturing gene chizik doing the same.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I’m not really a fan of the guy, but the hire makes some sense. let the coaches in place do their thing and let him do whatever it is he does. the pieces are in place for this year with a lot of seniors on the team so bringing in someone unfamiliar with the team and coaches doesn’t make a ton of sense. but still. john l. smith?
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Too bad the wikipedia thing got updated so fast. It gave me a chuckle. I felt stupid about it but I laughed

just for fun, I wish Duffy would have pulled a j-mac and linked to all the previous Petrino stories. pageviews!

All of this. This isn’t a permanent thing, people. It’s for 9 god damn months. Would it be better if they promoted the DC, you know, the guy who has been there for 3 months, to the job? They were damned in any direction, though they are less so here. They can now spend the next 9 months looking for their next head coach.

If I were a betting man I would bet on Kirby Smart being the next ARK head coach. It just makes WAY too much sense.

I know the internet seems to coalesce around one opinion and then they run with it, but what else was ARK supposed to do? They weren’t getting any one worth a shit on a permanent basis right now. This way they are the 2012 version of Ohio State, but with people who actually know how to play football. They are 9-3 at worst with me coaching them, so Smith, who we all like to make fun of, but actually knows offense, can get them to 10-2 or perhaps better (though not likely as Bama and LSU are still better).
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:37 PM
I’m not happy either. This is a huge fucking disaster.
Can you imagine what Smith and Les Miles will talk about before the LSU game? Les will be chowing down on grass and saying “How do you like AR-Kansas?” While Smith slaps himself, cheerleaders….volleyball players.

April 23rd, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Be honest, though. Last year’s OSU team wasn’t all that talented as far as OSU teams go. This year’s ARK team is fucking stacked on offense and serviceable on defense.
What should he have done? He gets someone who knows the players and the system and he gets someone who no one will want as the HC even if they win 11+ games.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:42 PM
dude, your coach is Gene fucking Chizic.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:42 PM
last year’s OSU team was very talented…it just hurt that of the top 5 talents on the team, four were suspended. add in losing nathan williams and tyler moeller for the season early on and there’s your talent. lots of good players…they just couldn’t play.

OT…can we stop using the term “franchise [insert position]?”
it’s lazy and annoying. there’s no such thing as a franchise LT…look at the last SB winners, not an elite LT on there.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
that’s how I feel exactly, and I’m kinda happy McGee left just before. Had he been the interim and led them to a 10+ win season, it would put Arkansas in a potentially bad predicament.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
A lot of Ark’s better players haven’t been hit with bullshit 5 game penalties, either.
/being honest
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:44 PM
I still can’t believe he didn’t self impose a bowl ban last season
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Not entirely true. That team had more talent than any other Big Ten team. What was revealed was that Jim Tressel was covering up a bunch of coaching flaws, like no offensive coordinator, a video coordinator serving as QB coach.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Are you trying to be funny? Ron fucking Prince? This is a 10 month contract per everything I’ve read. JLS has worked with 9 of the assistant coaches on staff and the players know him and will accept him. This was the perfect hire from the standpoint that he won’t rock the boat nor will he push Long to hire him full time. I’m amazed more ARK fans aren’t behind this. Y’all need to realize that this was the best you were getting. No new coach was going to come in with out a spring session and ditch his team, causing the media to hate him from jump street.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:46 PM

April 23rd, 2012 at 3:52 PM
The national media would be following them around, though, and they would hate the shit out of them. Also, no one has a more pathetic media than Alabama. You can see the cum dripping out of their mouths when they speak to Saban.
/horrifying image that was totally unnecessary
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Ye, the guy with a national title, though I am not sure if anyone from Arkansas is old enough to remember what one of those looks like.
If Arky is smart they’ll go after another former Auburn DC and Iowa State head coach next offseason.
In the mean time, Smith will keep the staff, knows the lay of the land, and knows he is there just as an interim. He’ll do some stupid things and say something stupid. Arky fans should be content with wiping Miss St’s ass this year from their sixth place spot in the SEC, but in the long term the program will be fine I suspect.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:53 PM
The thing is this, Husker. Arkansas had an outside shot at a national championship this year. Even with Petrino they still probably don’t beat LSU this year. But it was still an outside shot. But you go out and get a guy with a 1-6 bowl record to mind the store? If this is the plan, the plan sucks. He was 22-26 at Michigan State and 12-20 in the Big 10. If you want an innkeeper for a .500 record, he’s your guy.

So I’m going to a wedding in a month, and my buddy the groom makes a ton of money a year. Like 7 figures. Any suggestions for gift ideas? I don’t want to get him a blender because the dude can get a blender. Also, it seems like cash would be stupid to give to him. I though of these ideas: You can buy a one square foot plot of land in Scotland and it give you the title of Lord\Lady or Bacon of the month club. Suggestions?
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:55 PM
It’s April…for those complaining about this hire…who else was available?
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Who else were they going to get? Again, with Bobby Douchebag getting fired when he did, he essentially fucked ARK over. That’s just the truth of the matter. But getting a familiar face that the players have known is a good thing. It doesn’t mean ARK is winning the West (they aren’t) but it means they shouldn’t fall apart, either. It’s the definition of a stop gap.
April 23rd, 2012 at 3:57 PM

April 23rd, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I think the argument with Coker is that he just rode Butch Davis’s players for one year before the wheels came off.
I’ve never gotten the “Chizik is stupid” argument, given the impressive defenses he had at both Auburn and Texas. And given the problems that happened last year, he did was appropriate and made two very good hires as coordinators.
But when it is all said and done, I’d rather have the dumbest coach to win the national title than the nicest, most Christian coach to never win one.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:00 PM

April 23rd, 2012 at 4:00 PM
it took me about 20 minutes of being pissed and repeating “john l. fucking smith” in my head. but I’ve now come to this realization as well. they weren’t getting a big name. long-term hire here at the end of April.

isn’t it a little early to say that may be exactly what Chizic did, but with Cam Newton instead?
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:03 PM
dude…cmon. he sleeps in that shit.
no dog in this fight, but if you can’t put a good defense together at auburn or texas, you’re fucking horrible.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Why not just promote someone from within to be the 2012 sacrificial lamb? Then go out hire someone else as soon as the season is over and retain the interim guy with a boost in job as a thank you. Also known as exactly what osu did
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Probably so, but I’d rather have Richt’s 15 year career at UGA even if it means never winning a title over Boob’s 7 year career with one good season at Auburn. I do get the title winning argument though, and many UGA fans would disagree with me in that regard.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I think the argument with Coker is that he just rode Butch Davis’s players for one year before the wheels came off.
The wheels didn’t fall off that quickly. In fact, his post NC season the team just barely lost in 2OT or he would have 2 titles. And the 2003, 2004, and 2005 Hurricanes were all better than last year’s Auburn team. So it took 5 years for Coker to have the wheels stolen.

Man, when you put fucking in there and misspell his name, he kind of sounds like a badass.
I think Arkansas did the right thing here. I was just kind of hoping they’d go buck wild and get somebody crazy enough to wear one of those pig hats on the sideline.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Exactly. Without Cam AUB loses 5+ games that year (at least). I need to see Boob put together a team without the best QB prospect the SEC has seen since Peyton before I’ll accept he’s not a complete fool.
They essentially did, though. JLS had been there from 2009-2011 and just left to take his Alma Mater’s gig 4 months ago (Weber State).
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:06 PM
my thinking is that they have a brand new O.C. as well as D.C., plus a few other assistants. with JLS, they bring in someone familiar with most coaches and players, and leave the coordinators alone to coach their positions. JLS can be the figurehead and let the assistant coaches do all the work.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Chizik is 7-9 in the SEC without Cam. Still early in his career, so it’s hard to see how that’s going to end up. I expect them to be better this year, but still fourth in the West.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I don’t get the argument that the coach is bad because he found a good player who was being ignored and exploited his talents, resulting in a Heisman and a national title. I thought that was actually part of, you know, coaching.
I mean, my God, Alabama purportedly paid more for Albert Means, and what did that get him?

Find out where they are going on their honeymoon and see if you can pre-pay something there (dinner, spa package, etc)
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Yet, it has happened at both schools, and it will happen again. It’s not like great talent just shows up – ask Jimbo Fisher.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Well, that’s the highest anyone not named Bama, LSU or ARK is doing as they’re head and shoulders better than everyone else. I assume MSU will go back to sucking, so 4th seems about right.
If I’m right (and I could be way off) I think AUB will be an 8-4 team with Boob in charge provided they don’t land another Cam. Isn’t that what got Tubs fired? I think Chizik is just another coach, but he’s paid closer to Saban money, which is of course laughable.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:10 PM
no, the black leather jacket is what makes him look like a badass.
what I was trying to get at is that Auburn fans should probably be the last ones in the SEC* to talk about a yawn-inducing coaching hire.
*not including either Miss. school, Vandy, Kentucky or either of those 2 new schools.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:11 PM
They’ve upgraded like whoa in the last 3 years there on defense. They have one of the best 5 defensive staffs in football now. That certainly wasn’t the case before they made the change, though.
Also, what kind of connections?
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:13 PM
Using said logic while staying in the SEC…goddamn Georgia sucks and squanders more talent than any other school in the South.
I always liked Chizik. He was the DC when I was in school there so I could see past the yawns, but I agree, it was a dull hire on our part. However, dude has a way with getting assistants to come to the Plains. The recruits have followed.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Perhaps they do, yes. That doesn’t change the fact that Chizik is laughably average, yet AUB fans deify him. They should instead deify the bagman. That would at least ring true.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:17 PM
No. He isn’t deified. We aren’t Bama. But for someone with zero respect for AUburn, such as yourself, I can see where respecting a coach would appear like offering sainthood.
And bagman/Cam/$180,000 jokes are just sad now. It’s like you’re not even trying.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:17 PM
so the coach is good because he stumbled upon a once in a lifetime player in his first year coaching there?
the point I was trying to make, especially in comparing him to Coker, is let’s wait and pass judgement on him in the 5 or so years after they win the National Championship.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:18 PM
he found a good player who was being ignored
Cam Newton was being ignored? No, he wasn’t expected to turn into God in his first chance at becoming a starter but just because he exceeded expectations doesn’t mean he was being ignored. In fact, let’s take it back to wikipedia, shall we? He was named a juco All-America honorable mention and was the most recruited juco quarterback in the country. You don’t pay $180,000 for a nobody juco transfer
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Fucking hilarious. I missed this moment of genius the first time I read his comment.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:21 PM
/ Mississippi State
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:21 PM
You know, that’s a completely fair judgment. I’m just amused by the petit-bourgeois snobbery of the Arkansas and Georgia fans here. On one hand, Alabama, Florida and LSU are more or less expected to contend every year, so it’s accepted that they’re great and will always be. But if an SEC team that’s not Georgia or Arkansas breaks through – obviously something is wrong. Someone did not know their place!
There was something about that national title that especially irritates other SEC schools, and that’s why I especially treasure it.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:22 PM
I think ignored was a bad choice of words but anytime Miss State is a finalist for a recruit, that kid isn’t far from being ignored.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:23 PM
And, apparently, he could have been taken more seriously if his recruiting came down to Auburn, Miss State, and (maybe) Oklahoma.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Any team that didn’t recruit Cam Newton out of JC was just using the seemingly inscrutable logic that, hey, if Urban Meyer couldn’t deal with him this kid must be the next Jeffrey Dahmer
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Yeah…generally when a super talented, 5-star recruit isn’t being heavily recruited by the big boys, it’s because the big boys know there’s shit around that player that renders the juice less valuable than the squeeze. AUB gambled and it paid off, because they did the shady shit correctly, unlike many other schools. Again, the bagman is the real genius here.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:26 PM

for the record, I have no problem with Auburn or their NC. at least they don’t have to make them up to make their dicks look bigger a la Alabama. but I’ve never been called a snobby Arkansas fan, so, thanks?
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Aaron Lynch to USF per Andy Staples. Big get for the younger Holtz.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:30 PM
I am expecting an 8 or, if lucky, 9 win season this year. I think there’s a lot of raw talent there, but it is young. I think Auburn fans are not going to fly off the handle because it is understand that there is a big hole in talent in the senior class. QB will be a lot better than last year, if only because how could it not be.
But bringing in Van Gorder, who you know is very good at his job, isn’t a stupid move, and it’s not a move that a program falling apart could make. Bringing in a top ten recruiting class is not a move a program falling apart makes. I think you guys are just going to have to get used to the leather jacket, as well as how to spell Chizik’s name.*
*Note: with that said, my spell check keeps wanting to change Saban to “Midget,” Richt to “Breck Girl,” and Muschamp to “Boom Muthafucka.” Not sure how that happened.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Clemson, LSU, Arkansas, UGA, Bama, Texas A&M and Vandy are all tough games (yes, even Vandy, especially on the road). I think they lose the first 5 I listed, though Clemson could easily shit the bed. I think 8-4 is the ceiling.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:36 PM
LSU, Bama, ARK and UGA could very well be better at every position save for the OL (I don’t know shit about their OL other than it’s young at AUB). That’s tough to overcome, especially with Dyer no longer there to tote the rock 20+ times a week. AUB didn’t just lose badly last year, they were smoked by an average of 30 ppg against the big 4 they played. I’m not sure that number comes down but maybe 10 points this year.

Fuck, I keep forgetting. This getting-ready-to-move shit is cutting into my ability to zone out listening to old punk and metal online.
April 23rd, 2012 at 4:58 PM
To me that suggests that something else was up – while there was certainly a talent gap, it was not 30 points different (okay, maybe at QB and a couple of spots on the O line and secondary).
I think Malzahn got exposed a little in that he had trouble developing a young QB. I saw Frazier once this spring and I left actually impressed – I realize spring is spring, but last year left me the impression that Frazier was simply incapable of throwing the ball. Loeffler has my confidence as an OC.
The problem with the offense really threw everything else off. The offense constantly goes three-and-out, Ted Roof’s bend-don’t-break-defense starts to break more and more, and you get blowout losses. With Cam Newton, that could fly, but not without him. And its’s crazy, but the corners seem to actually be capable of covering people – something that didn’t seem possible under Roof (Roof is at Penn State BTW, which is why no one should crown O’Brien yet).
I actually don’t expect a big dropoff from Dyer. Not because Dyer isn’t crazy talented, because he is, but because the offense will use the RBs a little better, collectively they can have 25 carries no problem, and Dyer was such a headcase that honestly I can’t imagine how he would have survived this season even if it was somehow tenable for him to hang around after what went down last year. The run game would have been pretty worthless this year unless something was done about the gameplan.
So, I am realistic, but I don’t see why we can’t beat Clemson and have a true upset.
