Miami Dolphins Signee Les Brown Is The Latest To Try The Antonio Gates Path to NFL Success
Tony Gonzalez, two sport star in college, showed us that basketball skills translated to the tight end position in the modern NFL. Antonio Gates took it further, never having played college football, but starring in basketball at Kent State. Jimmy Graham played basketball at the University of Miami, and then stayed for one more year and played a season of college football, which got him drafted in the third round by New Orleans.
Les Brown is the latest to try this college basketball to NFL tight end thing out, hoping to become a man of renown. Brown was just signed to a contract by the Dolphins with a chance to compete for a roster spot. He was an all-state wide receiver in high school in Utah, and had opportunities to play at Oregon, Washington State and BYU, but chose to stay close to home to play basketball at tiny Westminster College. After his junior year, he got an internship with Huntsman Gay Global Capital, and spent two years in the firm’s accounting department.
He returned to Utah to finish his degree, and was approached by a personal trainer to try out for football (his brothers play for BYU). He worked out, got an invite to the BYU pro day, and impressed enough there to get another call from Miami.
“It was all kind of surreal and then it just hit me: Wow, this is really happening,’ ” Brown said. “So here I am today. I’m very proud to be a Miami Dolphin and very honored. I just can’t wait for the next step.”

Take note parents telling their kids to focus on one sport. It doesn’t matter that you’ve played on 5 travel teams since the age of 6. If you’re talented, they’ll find you.

They’re still trying to figure out the kick returner to wide receiver translation thing.

How are you not even mentioning Hayden Smith?
Bad college basketballer from Australia, turned hotshot “US” rugby player, turned tight end project for the Jets. That’s a story. (until he gets cut).
Pick #29 in the mock is down. We are waiting on Ballz now. So we may be waiting a while.

if this is successful i can’t wait for other teams to start signing accountants to play positions, a la college teams trying out their towelboys trying to replicate bobby boucher’s success.

I ate some wings called Cowboys from Hell last night. I fell like I drank Kansas City tap water. I don’t know about this Les Brown, but More Browns are in the equation for me the rest of the day. It’s like lava.

Glad to see the Dolphins went and got a basketball player to catch passes from a college receiver. The entire offense is like a Chinese fire drill.

But LeBron could never be an NFL Tight End. Right Jeremy Shockey?

I love the dolphins and I know that steroids and human growth hormones are rampid in the NFL but to represent this story as a feel good one when this transformation is obiously chemically induced is upsurd. You can see video of the changes on the web and it is ridiculous. I have played football all my life and lifted to do so. 10 weeks, 2.5 months and he put on 25 lbs of muscle and cut his body fat in half? That is just 75 days people that can not be done without the use of steriods or other chemical aids. I know you still have to work hard to see those changes in that small amount of time but lets not give him the atta’boy that everyone has been.
