College Hoops Top 25 For 2012-2013 [Amended to Reflect Recruits/NBA Decisions]
The hectic April dust has settled and we’ve made a few tweaks to the 2012-2013 Top 25 from two weeks ago. The elite high school recruits have made their decision. The potential pros have left for NBA riches or decided to stay on campus. So let’s give this another shot. New additions: Missouri, UNLV, Minnesota. Dropped out: Tennessee, Marquette, Duke.
1. Indiana (27-9, Sweet 16). Top five scorers back and they might have the best player in the country.
2. Louisville (30-10, Final 4). Eager to see the leap Dieng makes this summer.
3. NC State (24-13, Sweet 16). It feels too high, but on paper this is the ACC’s best team.
4. Florida (26-11, Elite 8 ). Return four of their top six players and were an epic collapse away from the Final Four. Yes, they’ll be better than UK.
5. Michigan (24-10, First Round). Trey Burke is staying!
6. Missouri (30-5, First Round). The Pressey-Dixon-Bowers-Oriakhi quartet will be formidable. Tigers were a glaring omission from the previous Top 25.
7. Syracuse (34-3, Elite 8 ). Probably a bit high for a team losing four starters.
8. Creighton (29-6, 2nd round). Let me guess – you’re laughing at the veteran Blue Jays over the defending champs?
9. Kentucky (38-2, National Champs). You can’t lose your top six players and not take a significant step back. Yes, I’m aware how strong the incoming recruits are. Expect a nice March run but a loss to a veteran team before the Final 4.
10. UCLA (19-14, NIT). Two of the country’s Top 10 recruits will make the Bruins relevant again.
11. North Carolina (32-6, Elite 8 ). Loaded on the wing.
12. Kansas (32-7, Title Game). It’s Bill Self. They’ll be fine despite losing Robinson and Taylor.
13. Baylor (30-8, Elite 8). Fear Scott Drew, errrrbody!
14. Ohio State (31-8, Final 4). Craft, DeShaun Thomas and Smith won’t be far behind Indiana & Michigan in the Big Ten.
15. Memphis (26-9, 1st round). Still don’t trust Josh Pastner in a big spot.
16. Maryland (17-15). Best case scenario – finish 2nd in the ACC, ahead of UNC and Duke.
17. UNLV (26-9, 1st round). Moser’s back, and Birch, the transfer from Pittsburgh, should have a big impact.
18. Butler (22-15, NIT). Top four scorers back plus high-impact transfer in Clarke.
19. Miami (20-13, NIT). Four of top five scorers return, and the Hurricanes are kind of a sleeper in the ACC.
20. Arizona (23-12, NIT). Might have the 2nd best recruiting class in the nation.
21. Minnesota (23-15, NIT) – Top five scorers return for Tubby Smith’s … last hurrah before taking another job?
22. Michigan State (29-8, Sweet 16). It’s Izzo. They’ll be fine despite losing Green.
23. San Diego State (26-8, First Round). Top three scorers are back.
24. BYU (26-9, First Round). West Coast resurgence!
25. Harvard (26-5, First Round). They’ll win a game in the NCAA tournament.

Tennessee fell out, even though they didn’t lose anyone? Cool.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
No they won’t.
Still struggling to understand why in the hell you think BYU will be better than Gonzaga. I don’t even think it’s remotely close.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Finally. A post to root for.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
I thought so
April 18th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
If Miami finishes ahead of Michigan State I will laugh my ass off. And Michigan should be around the 8-9 range.

I don’t think #22 is fine for Izzo.
I don’t think there’s that big a difference (I think the teams split last year’s games) and both have a lot coming back. I would agree that Gonzaga is better, I just don’t think it’s by a whole lot.

Sean -
The situation is fluid.
12. Kansas (32-7, Title Game). It’s Bill Self. They’ll be fine despite losing Robinson and Taylor.
It is Final Four or bust for KU fans. So, losing in the Sweet 16 would not be fine.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
OSU is probably too low. MSU is WAY to fucking low.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Dr. Tom -
We need TBL to define “fine” for us.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
And while I’m not ready to put Arkansas in the top 25 just yet, barring injuries they are a tournament team.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
I was just looking for this. Thank you.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Like seeing the Turtles up that high. That’s gonna be a strong squad next year if Turgeron can control Stoglin and even half of that strong recruiting class can contribute alongside Stoglin, Len, and Faust.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
You’re still putting way too much value on Oriakhi.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
I hope this is a weekly feature here. I’d like to see how offseason non-official practices impact the top 25 throughout the next 6 months.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
You have to wonder, though, what kind of leash Self has. Lot of good young coaches available (Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart). If Kansas could get one of those guys, do they do it?
Granted, this question would have been moo if Self hadn’t choked this year.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Is Wisconsin off here out of protest because they shouldn’t be. What is it seven straight years of advancing past the round of 64? Also, Canaan is coming back for Murray State so they should probably be involved here somewhere.
Crean will blow it.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
That’s gold, Jerry…GOLD!!!
April 18th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Wait, going to the championship game before losing to one of the best CBB teams in a decade is choking now?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Has anyone seen Tom Crean coach without Dwayne Wade? It’s not pretty. He’s after Izzo, Ryan, Matta, Michigan’s coach, NW’s coach…
April 18th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
WOOSH
April 18th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
RIP Dick Clark.

Aren’t jokes funny?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
Was this copy and pasted from last summer?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
I hate KU and Bill Self, but it would be silly for them to even consider replacing Self. He’s one of the ten best coaches in the game even with that toupe restricting bloodflow to his brain. It’s also a lot different coaching at Butlet and VCU than it is at a big time program.

It was the funniest comment on this site today…

Nice work.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Um, Wisconsin? They end up ranked just about every year no matter what people think of them.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
They only lost 2 significant players from last year. HUGE difference.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Pitt will be good
April 18th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Thems the rules around here. If you didn’t win the championship you choked….all of you.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I enjoy that these were formatted to avoid the dreaded 8)

Best long-form joke of the day. Best short-form joke is the first post on the Pat Summit post.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
“Still don’t trust Josh Pastner in a big spot.”
Makes sense. You don’t want that guy taking a big shot with the game on the line.
What? He’s not a player?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
Queef…Nick P was referencing all things that TBL has said in past.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Pat Summitt retired. that’s why.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
◘
April 18th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
“Nick P”
Coach Mike Woodson, Atlanta Hawks is Nick P? Where the hell have I been?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
You didn’t see Calipari make his kids miss shots and FT’s during his previous tournament losses? Well TBL did.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Awesome exchange
April 18th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Can we do a college basketball pre-season poll in the same way we’re doing a commenter NFL mock draft? If so, I’d like to pick 9th.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Wait until you find out about Sparty and fetch.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
If I am not mistaken: Nick P -> Rusty -> Coach Mike Woodson, Atlanta Hawks
April 18th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
UCLA in great position. To underachieve yet again. Put them down for a 4th place finish in the Pac-12 and a coaching search in March.

not a UCLA fan but Washington sucks
April 18th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
RIP Dick Clark.
Ditto. I was a fan of Bandstand, at least before I discovered Soul Train.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Wait until you find out about Sparty and fetch.
I figure Sparty was still around, if not in spirit only, but I refuse to believe Fetch is around anymore. Unless, you know… proof.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Ok
April 18th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
And, St. Bear, I’m not overly picky about proof like Dirt is.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
a while ago, there were rumors that Fetch was somebody who I can’t remember, he denied said rumors.
As for Sparty, I thought that was obvious.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
What in the fuck? Duke get Mason Plumlee back so you DROP them? I honestly don’t think you watch basketball.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
If there’s not a “heist film” reference or “/journalism” somewhere, the meme is lost on me.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
Jim –
Yeah, Sparty is 2girls1cup now, right?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Oskie.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Only if Josh Smith commits to eating just half a pizza instead of two whole pizzas each day this summer.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Wow, UK 9th? I like Noel and Goodwin, but TBL (or Duffy, I forget) you even said Noel might get screwed academically, and outside of Wiltjer and Hood (neither of whom can do much besides shoot threes) this team has nothing coming back.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
I’ll vouch for TBL here. He watches all the games of his two favorite teams: Syracuse and Georgetown.
April 18th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
I thought it was discussed here a few months ago. Maybe if we ask all the commenters who are active on this thread can clear this up?
April 18th, 2012 at 4:58 PM
Shatner – They still could land Bennett.
April 18th, 2012 at 5:00 PM
Moleman – They get Plumlee back. Wonderful. Where are they getting offense from? The guards who can’t do anything against good teams? The freshman wing? Just admit it – Duke is, at best … 4/5th best in the ACC.
NC State.
UNC.
Maryland.
Miami.
April 18th, 2012 at 5:01 PM
Has anyone seen Tom Crean coach without Dwayne Wade? It’s not pretty. He’s after Izzo, Ryan, Matta, Michigan’s coach, NW’s coach…
huh? wade wasn’t on his team this year.
April 18th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
True, but I’m also having a difficult time buying all the Noel hype, revolving around how he’s better than Davis defensively.
April 18th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
fine work leaving out saint mary’s who was 4-1 against those schmoes this year. carlino is a false prophet and zags gonna zag.
April 18th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
Exactly. If you have Duke at 25 WITHOUT Plumlee, you’ve got to have them high teens with him.
April 18th, 2012 at 6:12 PM
Third best, Maryland and Miami still aren’t better. They will get a lot of offense from Murphy and Rasheed.
But YOU had them as the 25th team when you were assuming Mason was gone and now have dropped them. I mean if you were just putting them at 25 to be a spiteful dick, which you basically admitted, okay. But they got better by bringing back their best big man.
Whatever, not sure why I’m worried about what you think about Duke basketball.
April 18th, 2012 at 6:19 PM

well, they did lose one starter from a 2-seed team that was top-10 all year and beat Kansas, UNC, Michigan State, Michigan, FSU, and NC St.
So, you know… makes sense that they’d drop this far.
April 18th, 2012 at 6:27 PM
If I’m not mistaken, UCLA was shut out from the postseason this year. I think they passed on a bid to the CBI (or CIT).
April 18th, 2012 at 6:50 PM
Can someone please tell me why everyone has UNC in front of Duke in the ACC next year? I mean, seriously, sit down and tell me how you can justify it. To start, tell me who’s running the point, and if you say Marcus Paige, explain how his foot injury doesn’t stunt his development a la Quinn Cook.
Also, LOL at Maryland in the top 25, and the thought of a top ten team losing one player and all of the sudden dropping out of the top 25.
Basically, people are taking Duke losing to Lehigh (without Ryan Kelly)way too seriously. I mean, Missouri lost to Norfolk St (a team WITHOUT an NBA first round player) and is at 6th.
April 19th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Butler! I thought TBL hated Butler.
