2012 NFL Schedule: The NFL Blew it by Only Having Cam Newton and Carolina in Primetime Twice
I’ve gone through the primetime schedules, and while there are several notable games, one thing stood out to me.
Carolina. The Panthers play in two of what will be the more anticipated primetime matchups of the year, but why not more?
I was fully expecting Cam Newton and the Panthers to be featured prominently in stand alone games in 2012. All he did was have one of the best rookie seasons ever, on a team that was frequently involved in exciting shootouts. The Panthers ranked 5th in points scored but 27th in points allowed. Coming off a 2-14 year, Carolina never played in a primetime game last year. On most Sunday afternoons, they were usually in my rotation of games to keep an eye on most frequently, and it rarely disappointed.
So, I expected the league to get the Carolina Panthers in primetime regularly in 2012. Sure, they do not have the tradition and national fan base of some other draws, but there is something else that sells in the NFL: entertaining star offensive players, and Cam is near the top of the list entering year two. Additionally, there are now 100 stand-alone national games including the Thanksgiving contests. Every team is required to be on once, and no more than five times.
Carolina is on TWICE. Once on a Thursday Night NFL broadcast that many in the country that do not have the NFL Network will not see, against the Giants. Once on a Monday Night in November, the capper to a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend in what will be one of the most anticipated Monday Night games of the year. None on Sunday Night, the NFL’s showcase game.
Only eight teams are on less – Miami, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Minnesota, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Cleveland.
I can make an argument for maybe ten teams having more primetime games than Carolina based on drawing power in 2012. Instead, they end up with a below average number of primetime games.
But they were only 6-10 last year, you say? They haven’t earned it? The league sometimes does a poor job of anticipating the breakout teams and over schedules “winning” teams that fall apart. Carolina was 6-10, yes, but they were 2-6 in close games, and those close game records are notoriously fickle from year to year. They were already close to an average team. In addition, they closed stronger, winning 4 of the final 6.
New Orleans’ profile of offensive team that cannot play defense is one that suggests improvement in 2012. Defenses are more volatile and easier to turn around than offense, and better health and some key roster moves can make a big difference. The offense, on the other hand, is likely to still be very good so long as Newton is under center.
There have been eight other teams who averaged scoring at least 24 points a game and giving up at least 24 a game, and finished with a losing record. None of them had a losing record the following year. They averaged 9.6 wins. Carolina is going to be somewhere along the spectrum of team that shows dramatic improvement and leaps to double digit wins if the defense makes strides and they are average in close games, to still entertaining in shootouts even if the defense is still below average. They are a draw either way.
That they are only featured on prime time games the same amount as teams like Arizona, Tennessee and Oakland is head scratching. At least I know who I’ll be putting in the must-view rotation on Sunday afternoons in the fall again.

They didn’t blow it. They protected themselves from having a 4-9 team playing in primetime towards the end of the season.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I didnt see Newton once last year.
Remember the year Cleveland went 10-6 and then the next year they got a bunch of PT games except they went back to sucking? Need more flex scheduling.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Also, Cam loves bad poetry.

I saw somewhere that the Pats and Packers have cake schedules. Is this true?
April 18th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
If Carolina does well, they’ll play themselves into the NBC lineup. If only Cammy Cam does, not so much.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Maybe they also saw his last 8 games (4 of which saw his QB rating no higher than 75) and said, instead of having another Jaguars issue on our hands, let’s wait and see what he does in year 2. If Cam plays like he did last year in his second campaign, he and CAR will be all over primetime games in 2013.

April 18th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Also keep in mind this isnt the NBA. The team brand has more cachet than an individual player’s brand. They’re still the Panthers. Put Newton on the Bears or Steelers and it’s a different story.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Let’s put them on SAT on NBC instead of Notre Dame. Boom. Solved.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
The Washington-Carolina game should be fun provided both RG3 and Cam are both healthy.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
I cannot believe they didn’t get a SNF game. Its one thing to lose and suck and be hard to watch like Jax or Stl. But the Panthers offense was pretty damn exciting with Cam.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
It’s going to be a reverse in 2013 with ATL and CAR. I think ATL struggles this year (but not enough to land a top pick, dammit) and CAR will be 7-9 or 8-8 and on the rise. They’ll get the primetime games and ATL will be stuck with one or two.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Panthers came off a 2-14 season with an energizing player and still only saw a 25% increase in local ratings. It’s not that good of a market. Even if Cam is nationally interesting, the networks don’t want a dip from a small market team.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Bingo.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Let’s see them finish above .500 before we start bitching about how much air time they get on National TV. Yes Cam is fun to watch, but the rest of that team sucks. I would much rather watch the Steelers or 49′ers (teams that made the playoffs) twice vs. a team with a stellar rookie.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Team Direct Tv NFL package. Problem, solved for me.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
49ers got 5 games…seems excessive.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
With all of the shitty games the NFL stuck ESPN with, you’d think they would have tried to do anything to get some more exciting teams involved.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Pretty much. No matter how exciting Cam is, nobody would tune in in late Nov if they were under .500.
I’m sorry Lisk, but this read like a TBL post. You’re usually more grounded than this.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
disagree with Lisk. Agree with Gods of the Gridiron’s take in comment 2.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
I’m praying to every God that’ll listen that they offer an streaming only option this year, with an app, not their shitty website.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
I am curious to see how some of the rookie QBs fare this year. Saw a report on how the lack of off-season allowed the OC’s for these teams to make it simple for them, reads, plays, etc.
Wondering if the added work this year and opposing DEF’s being better prepared them might put a crimp in their Soph season.
If you think Blane Gabbert was bad last season, wait to this year. I think he’ll be abysmal this year and benched by game 3.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
I think Lisk is arguing that they will be an improved team this year, and the NFL is missing out on an opportunity to showcase their talent by not properly projecting the Panthers.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Wow. Just looked up and realized it wasnt TBL!
April 18th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Ditto for Chicago.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
49ers got 5 games…seems excessive.
Agree with this although still stand by my stance that we can’t complain about a rebuilding team not getting enough air time.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Great defense, exciting coach and Randy Moss. It makes sense.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I’m sorry Lisk, but this read like a TBL post. You’re usually more grounded than this.
Wow. Just looked up and realized it wasnt TBL!
There is no way Lisk wrote that headline. That is all TBL.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
So weird that Cincy and Detroit aren’t on that list. I like it.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
I understand this point, but if they could project teams, they’d be working in Vegas not NBC. Also i always thought of PT games as a reward for having a good season the year before. I think 2 primetime games is a lot for a small-market non-traditional franchise coming off a 6-10 year. So i’m pretty sure they did factor in Cam and a possible break through year into the equation.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
They didn’t blow it. They protected themselves from having a 4-9 team playing in primetime towards the end of the season.
okay. so you think Carolina is more likely to be 4-9 than other teams that have more primetime games?
April 18th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Yes.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Wait, Lisk wrote this? Fantastic post Liskanity!
April 18th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
If I’m not mistake that was the year in which the Browns went roughly 10 straight games without an offensive TD and even had Ken Dorsey starting games.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Also I hate Carolina’s unis.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Maybe they also saw his last 8 games (4 of which saw his QB rating no higher than 75) and said, instead of having another Jaguars issue on our hands, let’s wait and see what he does in year 2. If Cam plays like he did last year in his second campaign, he and CAR will be all over primetime games in 2013.
The Jaguars are the complete opposite of Carolina. Got on because were 8-8, but underlying numbers said not very good. Garrard, lots of close wins, replaced with rookie QB, rebuilding.
Those multiple Jacksonville games were horrible decisions. They are like putting Arizona on more times, not Carolina.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Carolina’s defense is god fucking awful. They’re going to lose them more games than Cam’s deep balls to Smith will win them.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
agreed. fuck da cheating ass bears.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
The bigger question is not why Cleveland gets a nationally televised game, but why is Cleveland on TV anywhere at all?
April 18th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
I was stuck watching the Arizona/Carolina opener last season and while it may have looked like an exciting game based on the score it was one of the worst football games I had seen played in years. I don’t want that garbage near the national telecasts.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I’m sorry Lisk, but this read like a TBL post. You’re usually more grounded than this.
You guys always say this when I write a Newton post. Bookmarked again, we’ll see in November who is 4-9 and who the bad games are.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
And to add onto my own comment, if he plays great and they win this year, the league (and fans) will pay more attention to them in 2013, meaning ratings will be high. It was a prudent move by the NFL in my opinion.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I remember when the Aints went something like seven or eight straight seasons without a national TV game. Of course, it was deservedly so, as they sucked ass.
April 18th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
This is why flex-scheduling exists, Lisk. If it’s at least once and no more than five times, what’s the big deal? They’re on twice. Would a third time really have tipped the scales here?
April 18th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Slow your roll…let’s see what GloriusMullet does at pick #9.
/For my entertainment, I hope they get Michael Floyd.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
@Lisk, isn’t the NBC flex option a hedge against Cam regressing? Put him in 2 prime time games, and if he proves himself he can get another.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Hell yes. Love this attitude right here.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Yes.
We need a wager.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
okay. so you think Carolina is more likely to be 4-9 than other teams that have more primetime games?
Just went through the Monday, Sunday, and Thursday night games. Carolina has basically the same amount of Nat. TV coverage that the rest of the teams who finished with similar schedules have. I just don’t see why we should be arguing that they get more air time.
I think this is the first time I have ever disagreed with you Lisk and it feels weird dude.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
We need a wager on who is more likely to be 4-9? Or will they be 4-9, because I said the first part, not the second. That’s tough to wager on.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
@Lisk, isn’t the NBC flex option a hedge against Cam regressing? Put him in 2 prime time games, and if he proves himself he can get another.
With all the politics behind the scenes, they end up rarely flexing games. Remember the NE-DEN situation last year? It has to be a) a dreadful game or b) Carolina at 12-2 against another great team for them to do that.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
I saw some of Cam’s first game against Arizona. I didn’t really watch Carolina again until I went home for the holidays and saw him beast mode the Bucs. He is highly entertaining and if you paired the Panthers against one of their higher profile opponents people would watch.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
The wager should be fourteen thousand dollars, which has a street value of over twenty thousand dollars.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Big TV market. Lots of controversial storylines (Marshall, Forte’s contract, new GM, possible coaching change on the horizon). I agree 5 was a bit much, but it’s the NFL’s 2nd largest TV market.
I would prefer the team I follow not be on Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football because I like to sleep on school nights. Same goes for Thursday. I hate Thursday night games no matter who is playing.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
exactly!!!!!
last thing you want is carolina and atlanta locked into a prime time game if they are 3-7 and 2-8
April 18th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
But this is going to happen according to you, no? So you should get to see Cammy Cam Cam on SNF in December.

April 18th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
On paper the Thurs. night schedule looks like garbage for the most part.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Nah, they gotta play first-place schedules.
/TBL
In reality, yes, the Patriots have an easy schedule if they are allowed to play all the 2011 teams and they all promise not to get any better before this year. Talking about schedule strength based on teams that no longer exist is stupid.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
I demand to be updated on this mock draft. Email me the draft to date. My* Ravens need to see how the board is shaping up.
*because nobody wants them
April 18th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Especially in a post where the whole point is that the Panthers should be better/more exciting than their 6-10 record last year.
/2 seems like enough though, make them earn it
April 18th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
I understand this point, but if they could project teams, they’d be working in Vegas not NBC. Also i always thought of PT games as a reward for having a good season the year before. I think 2 primetime games is a lot for a small-market non-traditional franchise coming off a 6-10 year. So i’m pretty sure they did factor in Cam and a possible break through year into the equation.
If they want to go by records, fine. I can say that is dumb in a vacuum. Vegas win totals have Carolina/Atlanta/Tennessee/Dallas/Detroit/KC all have same win total projections. Carolina’s O/U is higher than Cincinnati.
I know they are a small market. That’s why I said 10 teams in front of them–your going to have the Dallas, New York, Chicago, New England, Philadelphias maxing out because of market size, I get that.
Is Atlanta going to really draw more viewers than Carolina in a primetime game because of home market?
April 18th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
What games do you think they should have been given the third primetime game for?
Throw out the four Tampa Bay and Atlanta matchups, Seattle, Kansas City, San Diego, and Oakland, those are all ratings death games.
Dallas, Chicago, and Washington all present problems given their primetime games.
Dallas: New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, Philly
Chicago: Green Bay, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, SF
Washington: Dallas and New York
You can’t make the Carolina/Washington game a primetime game because it’s too risky having two losing teams going in even with the hype surrounding their QBs.
Maybe the Houston and Atlanta matchups for Dallas and Chicago respectively, but those teams are more consistent than Carolina. I think the Atlanta matchup is the best argument for one to be switched.
How about the Saints games? The early season matchup might be too risky but I would rather watch that than the Atlanta/Denver MNF game.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:14 PM

they guy is in midseason form already. Lamenting the unfairness of things happening to the Jets, and sweating his wagers.

April 18th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
No clue, but I tend to say yes. They are a more known commodity amongst NFL fans as they’ve failed in the playoffs three years out of four.
/sulks
April 18th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
It’s entirely possible (not sure they think this far ahead, but they might) that they didn’t give the Panthers more primetime dates out of fear that Cam Newton may not stay healthy for 16 games. He’s not a traditional QB. Look what happened to Mike Vick (who isn’t nearly as big as Cam). QBs that run have a higher likelihood of getting hurt. Maybe that factored in.
Just think the difference between 2 and 3 is nominal. They weren’t getting 4 as a 6-10 team.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Always is. I can’t remember the last time a Thursday night game was heavily hyped. Maybe the Cowboys-Packers in game in 07? That might be it.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Meanwhile, apparantly the Philadelphia Daily News has become the NY Post
April 18th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
FYI they only play 11 games before Dec 1.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
Denver/Carolina game would be interesting and the primetime matchups that week kind of suck ass, too.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Big fan of the page that they got the pagination reversed and used the wrong Penguins logo. Quality work.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
This is the thing Lisk. The NFL isn’t scheduling teams for people like you, or even me. They’re scheduling games for Johnny Six-Pack who will see commercials for the Det-Atl game hyping the postseason implications, and decide to tune in.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:20 PM

April 18th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Excellent point. The most they were ever getting is 3. Atlanta plays DEN, NO, Dallas and Detroit for their primetime games. Is a CAR-DAL more intriguing than ATL-DAL? I think no, as Atlanta is most likely the better team. But as SC said, it’s the difference between 2 and 3, yet with the flex slate 3 is still on the table.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
Wait so the stupid fan is the one who wants to watch the game that matters and the smart one is the one who wants to watch the flashy QB with the horrid defense?
April 18th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
As someone who is not a fan of either…I would rather watch Cam Newton than the Falcons.
Falcons sell steak, Cam sells the sizzle.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:22 PM
They’re scheduling games for Johnny Six-Pack

some NFLN games have had more hype, but they were on Saturday nights.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
I get this line of thought. ATL is a boring team, for lack of a better word. Roddy White is good to say something dumb at any moment, but that’s about it, really.

No, Johnny is Joe’s son, who works for the DOT, and just got his own apartment, but still goes home once a week for his mom to do his laundry.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
You must be referring to Rosie O’Donnell
April 18th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
You do bring up a good point. There’s a difference between switching over to Carolina when they’re on offense just to see Cam, and being forced to watch an entire game.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
The wager should be fourteen thousand dollars, which has a street value of over twenty thousand dollars.
20 + 14 > 20 last I checked. There were people saying she was just going to be fired and get nothing. I said she would get more than the 20k Bobby already gave her for the car to walk away. She didn’t have to give that back, right? and she did get nuisance value to walk away. The comment about the size of the settlement was not made by me.
April 18th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
I’ll get the mock draft rolling again, guys. Sorry for not accommodating your schedules. I was waiting on a pick last night, it didn’t come in til after I got rolling this morning, and I haven’t been at a CPU til now.

Ah, we took that to mean the settlement or payoff would be more than 20k.
NOW ADDRESS COMMENT 69
Do I have to? I would have to rework the whole schedule, because they play lots of maxed out prime time teams, but any of those would be candidates. Saints-Panthers would have been my first choice as div game.
April 18th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Yeah that’s what I think too.
Manning being in Denver has fucked up a whole lot of TV stuff from the looks of it.
