Why Are the Big Ten and Pac 12 Pushing the Rose Bowl Playoff Plan?
The Big Ten and Pac 12 floated a Rose Bowl semifinal plan that would shoehorn the prestigious game into the national title picture. The plan would ensure the Big Ten and Pac 12 champions played in the Rose Bowl. Should either or both qualify for the four-team playoff, the playoff would have to adjust (and have a meaningless semifinal). The plan is dumb if your primary intent is to determine a national champion. Not surprisingly, SEC commissioner Mike Slive is not a fan.
“It’s not one of my favorites,” Slive said Monday at a roundtable of conference commissioners during a Associated Press Sports Editors meeting at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. “I think what we’re trying to do is simplify in many ways, and I don’t think that adds to the simplification of the postseason.”
It’s not 1995 anymore. ESPN has made college football national sport. The Big Ten and Pac 12 cannot credibly threaten to pack up their Rose Bowl and leave the national picture. Fans, TV Networks and schools won’t stand for it. Jim Delany and Larry Scott don’t have the leverage to force this plan through, even if they would want to do so. So why propose it?
Pushing forward that asinine playoff plan, could be a negotiating ploy to ensure something they might want. Commissioners are also altering the BCS bowl system. Having that playoff plan considered a legitimate option, would make a sweetheart deal to lock down the Rose Bowl as a permanent Big Ten/Pac 12 game (and perhaps control the TV rights?) look like a sop and a reasonable compromise.

The Rose Bowl just isn’t special anymore. It’s just another bowl game on January 1st now.

That plan is so fucking stupid in general that I can’t believe they think it’ll get through.
I wonder how they would plan to execute having a permanent Rose Bowl that isn’t part of the BCS picture.
A) A game after the conference championships and before the bowls with the top team from each conference?
B) A game at some point in the regular season with the champions from the previous year?
C) Rotating every team through every 12 years in the regular season?
D) A retarded exhibition before the season?

It’s just another bowl game on January 1st now.
Unless the 1st falls on a Sunday. Which I learned from this site is some sort of national tragedy.

Do you want their public answer of the one Larry Scott shouts out in ecstasy as Delaney rams his ass with a rolled up wad of $100 bills?

I read that in a book once, but it wasn’t ecstasy that the receiver was shouting.

Who the hell is still so addicted to the Rose Bowl at this point? Delany has been taking a hatchet to the college football landscape for the better part of two years, but OH NOES don’t mess with the Rose Bowl? Please. The freaking sponsorship is down to Vizio now. Besides sports writers and boosters over the age of 60, is there anyone left who still cares about this traditional matchup?

More ain’t necessarily better. And, insecurity makes one do strange things.

I’m shocked that the B10 and P12 would be in favor of limiting the SEC while keeping their precious bowl game.
/not shocked at all

Dumb idea from PAC-12 Commissioner.

To ensure at least one bowl win for those conferences.

The “tradition” of the Rose Bowl like when Vince Young and Texas won it in back to back years.
