Vikings Will Now Look To Los Angeles As A Relocation Threat After Minnesota House Panel Vote
Last month, there was much rejoicing and waving as Minnesota was declared off the market for Los Angeles when a new stadium proposal was announced. At the time, I said that the bill did not eliminate a move to Los Angeles yet, calling the announcement a political move to “put pressure on the legislature.”
The legislature has responded to that by, well, not going along with it. Last night, a Minnesota state house panel rejected the public subsidy package, with only two weeks left in this legislative session. That stadium proposal that involved a split of costs between the team and public subsidies is now on life support. Vikings spokesman Lester Bagley told reporters after the vote that ”[i]t’s a mistake to think the Vikings and the [National Football League] will continue with the status quo.”
So the veiled threats of change with a move to Los Angeles begin in earnest. Things are going to get ugly in the North. It will be eighteen seasons since Los Angeles has had a football team. As Brian Burke pointed out two years ago, the threat of Los Angeles for the league may be better than having a team there, for extracting public funding for other teams. However, the climate has changed from a decade ago in regard to public funding. That’s why I talked about Goodell trying to create London as another credible threat for relocation to spur action. Eventually, a municipality, perhaps Minnesota, will say no for good. But there are at least three in Jacksonville, Minnesota and St. Louis, plus the teams playing in the oldest stadiums in other cities in California, who would like to use it as a threat. If that threat is eliminated by one team actually moving there, we will see the public funding issue tighten up even more. I’m not sure politicians are going to cave with London calling as the only purported legitimate threat.
So, look for this Minnesota situation to escalate–to get to the front of the line using Los Angeles as a chip–very quickly. Wilf doesn’t want to be left threatening a move to Portland.

Zygi killed Al to get LA.
It’s straight out of an episode of Quantum Leap.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
If the Vikes move to LA, do the Rams move to the NFC North?
April 17th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Levon Helm is dying. This ruins my day.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
is zygi talking to captain kangaroo there?
April 17th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I’d be cool with that. Automatic 2 wins for the Bears.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
haha! One hell of a bowl cut on that guy.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Makes sense.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Levon Helm is dying.
I saw he cancelled his rambles and a few festival appearances. Kind of figured this is what was going on.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
The Rams would probably go for it. You would see a lot more Bears and Packers fans there than Seahawks and Cardinals fans.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
The Vikings went 3-13 last year.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
As Brian Burke pointed out two years ago, the threat of Los Angeles for the league may be better than having a team there, for extracting public funding for other teams.
Despite the truth, I still hate this. I thought since the National Football League was our so-called “national religion”, this type of arm-twisting wouldn’t be necessary.
I’m not sure politicians are going to cave with London calling as the only purported legitimate threat.
Aye. And not a strong purported threat, at that.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
I can say this because I don’t live in MN so even if they moved, I would still be a fan. Something will happen. I just don’t see them leaving. Yeah it looks bad right now, but I don’t think the state will let them leave.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
“I’d be cool with that. Automatic 2 wins for the Bears.”
Remind me again, which of these two teams most recently won a Super Bowl and was considered the best team in the NFC for about a 4 year period?
April 17th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
The Rams are 5-5 vs. the Bears since they moved to St. Louis.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Do the owners of other teams have a say in this, like baseball not allowing Mark Cuban to own a team?
Have a hard time believing whichever division gets the London team will appease the other owners. Not too mention the free agents and others who have no desire to travel the Atlantic eight times a year. The threat seems meaningless.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
The Rams have been dogshit every season, with the exception of the Warner teams.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
They never should have benched McNabb
April 17th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Levon Helm is dying. This ruins my day
yeah, that sucks. love the band.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
I think the same thing, pretty much. although they did let the Northstars take the sweetest sweaters in the NHL away 20 years ago, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they let the Vikings walk, and then let everyone start crying about it saying it was a mistake.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
I believe you mean acquired right? or at least started? because they shouldn’t have done either of those two things.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
This won’t happen. Goodell took care of that by saying he wants 2 teams in LA. Smart move.
Also, the Vikings belong in Minnesota. I’d hate it if they moved.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
the Rams now blow. no one denies this.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Bayern!
April 17th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
This isn’t actually true. They went 12-4 in 2003 with Marc Bulger leading the team.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Assuming Minny keeps the team logo/ history it would be horrific to see what the Nike uniform design team could come up with for a new LA team.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
It is gonna be happy action fun time in Madrid next week.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
that was 10 years ago.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Must have not been alive to watch the Rams in the olden days….unless you’re just talking about them in STL
April 17th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
as long as they keep the same design principles from Oregon’s eyesores I’ll be happy.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I hope the Vikings find a new home – somewhere good.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
The Rams? I’m sorry, but couldn’t you have looked that up yourself? You’re on the internet already.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Los Angeles Vikings doesn’t even make sense. They’d have to change their name to the Los Angeles Transgenders of San Juan Capistrano or some shit
April 17th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Apparently a decade does not constitute a long period of time. Learn something new every day.

Winter is coming
April 17th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
as long as they keep the same design principles from Oregon’s eyesores I’ll be happy.
I really hope they steer clear of whoever came up with the Titans look.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
God, that was too easy.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
i’m hoping for something drastic and horrific since it will probably be designed to enhance 3D viewing on TV, but blind everyone not wearing the 3D glasses.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
As a resident of a suburb of MInneapolis I cannot tell you how pissed I am of the Minneapolis city council and their liberal bullshit they pull regarding class warfare and their city charter they put through 10 years ago to appease their bierkenstock wearing constuents that states that a city wide referendum must be used to approve any expenditure of $10 mill or more for a public stadium. They killed this deal. Good thing that the nfl owners will vote to not allow a team to move to LA because they will lose out on the money they will get for an expansion team.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
The Los Angeles Isotopes?
April 17th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
So you would rather them cave and spend money that could go to public services on a sports stadium?
I say good riddance. Cities everywhere should stop allowing sports teams to swindle them into paying for their stadiums.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Neither does ‘L.A. Lakers’, but they kept that after they moved from Minnesota.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
you can blame this on the Rams for being the best team in the NFC for 4 years when all this happened.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:54 PM
“Apparently a decade does not constitute a long period of time. Learn something new every day.”
A decade is a long time. But not as long as 27 years ago (that’s how long it’s been since the 1985 era Bears were dominant). To think that the Bears can be penciled in to dominate any team over some period longer than 3 years is a stretch at this point. The Rams have a more recent track history of being dominant, and as you’ve noted, that was a decade ago. The Bears have been absent from such talk for nearly 30 years.
Use your illusion.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
No. The deal was using new streams with the use of electronic pull tabs exclusive to the stadium. Those who would play this form o pull tabs do so knowing their own money is going exclusive to this. Sorry, nice try on your attempt on class warfare.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
aside from the cold, vikings doesn’t make sense in minnesota either.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:57 PM
I think this is better than Peter Cottontail.

Guns and Roses, FTW.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
so the billionaires who own the teams can’t finance this themselves?
fuck ‘em, make them spend their own money unless they give free parking to in state residents and discounted tickets to the residents who paid taxes that funded the stadium.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
What does this have to do with class warfare? It has everything to do with municipal governments facing budget shortfalls and still agreeing to put revenues out there to help build stadiums.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
Bears have been in the playoffs 4 times since 2001, including a trip to the super bowl in 2006. Rams haven’t been to the playoffs since 2004 and haven’t had a winning record since 2003. The Rams suck, dude.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:19 PM
You have to remember the voters of Minnesota have elected Jesse the Body Ventura, Al Franken and Michelle Bachmann…best not to engage them in political discussion
April 17th, 2012 at 5:30 PM

I’ve never stated that the Rams don’t suck. But the idea that you are counting on automatic wins for the Bears over the Rams is laughable. The Bears aren’t dominant. Some would say that 4 playoff appearances in 11 years is kind of shitty.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
No it’s not. Like I said, the Rams are terrible.
Learn how to use the quote button, stupid.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
Debating short term results for a hypothetical division rivalry that could last 50 years is pointless even for the internet

Truthiest truth ever…

“Learn how to use the quote button, stupid.”
This POS of a website doesn’t load pictures or the comment buttons anymore.
Do something about your cheap boobs for chrissakes. It’s bringing everyone down.
April 17th, 2012 at 5:43 PM
And yet chiming in to declare an argument as pointless could very well win the award for “dumbest thing ever written on the internet.” Nice going, loser.
