There’s No Way Brian Kelly Avoids the 3rd Year Jinx at Notre Dame
There seems to be some sort of 3rd year jinx going on at Notre Dame.
* Bob Davie’s 3rd season with the Irish: 5-7 (coming off a bowl year)
* Tyrone Willingham’s 3rd season with the Irish: 6-6 (he was fired afterward)
* Charlie Weis’s 3rd season with the Irish: 3-9 (coming off a bowl year)
I’ll be stunned if the third year jinx doesn’t hit Brian Kelly and Notre Dame hard this season.
1) Brutal schedule. Let’s start with losses at Oklahoma and USC and at home to Michigan. Notre Dame isn’t winning those games. Also, the Irish have to go to Ireland to play Navy, which it has lost three of five against. The season probably hinges on games against rebuilding Michigan State (road), rebuilding Stanford (home), and potentially-solid BYU (home). After two 8-5 seasons, I’m not sure Kelly can get there next year. Smells like a 6-6 regular season.
2) No QB solution yet. The Blue-Gold game is Saturday, and there still seems to be four guys – Hendrix, Gholson, highly-touted freshman Kiel and the incumbent, Rees – in the mix to win the starting job. If you’ve got two QBs, you don’t have one … if you have four, you definitely don’t have one. Guess: Kiel gets redshirted, Gholson transfers (I hope he doesn’t, but he seems like the odd man out), Hendrix wins the starting job, and Rees is the backup. Then, Hendrix and/or Rees gets hurt, and Kiel ends up playing.
3) Defense lost its best player to transfer. The Aaron Lynch transfer was devastating. He led them in sacks. His relentless pressure off the end was going to help a shaky secondary. There’s still talent on the defense – middle linebacker Manti Te’o is among the nation’s best at his position and a future 1st round/2nd round NFL pick – but there’s no replacing Lynch.

Unless we get a patented TBL reverse jinx. Well played J-Mac, well played.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Also, the Irish have to go to Ireland to play Navy
Come, again?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
For all you Mad Men fans (sorry if this is duckworthed)
April 17th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
No way Notre Dame loses to Michigan after last years abortion. Wait, maybe they will. Notre Dame sucks. Nice pass coverage assholes.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
against whom they have lost three of five.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
well he didn’t avoid the first or second year jinxes either.

Newsflash: Mediocre College Football Team Still Mediocre.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
oh?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
The Irish also have a loss scheduled for October 6th in chicago
April 17th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
I’d like to say something about how the game against Miami at Soldier Field wasn’t mentioned under brutal schedule but then I realized Miami won’t be very good next year.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
neither will michigan, but that didn’t stop…

…TBL from saying it’d be difficult.

April 17th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
Can’t wait to see the new shade of reddish-purple he turns this year.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Gonna be a windy practice day?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Can he avoid a scissor lift jinx?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Reverse jinx 5 months before the season? Well played.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
I don’t get the “has to go to Ireland” part. Doesn’t the Navy also have to go to Ireland?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Watch Notre Dame go 11-2 and Kelly kills 2 more kids.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
I’ll stab Gary Gray if I ever see him in public.

We talking Chicago up in here?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Miami might not be great next year, cleet, but ND has the vaunted, well known, and much discussed 3rd year jinx working against them. Should be to Miami’s favor
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Yeah, I’m not clicking that, ESPN.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I think they do, but the game is on the road, so who knows. MICH played like shit on the road in 2011.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
I think they start off 4-1, only losing to Michigan. But after that I only see them winning 4 more games, tops.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
The Cripple Fight of all Cripple Fights!
TBL Chicago, baby!

April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Not only that, but Navy probably has to take boats to get there.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
im just so confused by this…ND almost won that game last year. missed by THISMUCH and it’s not like michigan got drastically better.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Anybody going to the game in Ireland?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
USC is going to absolutely curb stomp them.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Crystal ball time again?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
The Sparty defense will be stout next year. I agree the offense will struggle as losing Cousins is a big deal (thought don’t tell that to MSU fans as they’re sure the backup will be great!!). MSU should have the best D in the B10, though.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
Dude was a beast.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Good call. I’ll keep my counter-jinx talk up until I’m drunk in the parking lot though.

I still can’t answer one question….
Why do I root for teams that bring me so much disappointment?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:30 PM

April 17th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
I think Mich will be better as they’ll be more in line with what Hoke wants, but they did lose their 3 best defenders (all DL). That’s tough. I think Mich will be an 9-win team in the regular season. One game could go either way, meaning 10-2 is still there. They’re losing to Bama for sure (spare me Mich fans) and then they have Sparty (who owns them) Nebraska on the road as well as Ohio State.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Yikes
April 17th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
i wish…stupid alabama-grad intern dropped it and now im using this god damned quartz replacement.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Seriously. My husband will not be happy if they lose to ND and we beat them last year.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Just bury me in something snazzy, ok?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Tough to pound the rock into 8- and 9-man fronts. They lost all of their good WRs and their team captain at QB. That’s hard to overcome.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Maybe the Tide will snap ol Shoelace in half.

April 17th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
yeesh. they win 4 in a row after winning probably about 5 of the last 25 games and all of a sudden it is ownage.

April 17th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
I might take you up on this. It will save me from puking up all that Old Style on SC’s floor.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
I will say that both Michigan schools scheduled well. They get Bama with 9 new defensive starters and Sparty gets Boise after they lost 16 senior starters. Touche to their ADs.
/seriously
April 17th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
When you win 4 in a row, you own that team. That means an entire senior class went 4-0. That psychological right there. Trust me, if UGA runs off 3 more wins in a row over Florida, and there are kids on both teams that have never lost or won, that matters.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
They will welcome those defensive alignments. Will just end up helping the passing game evolve.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Always a good idea to think a rivalry game is a sure-thing either way??
April 17th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
And Tommy Rees is terrible. Way too sloppy with the ball. Give Hendrix or Gholson a shot and see what happens. Not like we are winning a BCS game this year any way, so might as well see what you have. We know Rees’ ceiling. It’s shit.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
I fucking love Old Style.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Minus the part where the games were scheduled well before there was any clue how good they’d be or who would graduate.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:38 PM

April 17th, 2012 at 3:38 PM

April 17th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Better to be lucky than good, but you knew Boise was going to be senior laden last year as they rarely (if ever?) have guys leave early. And any idiot who knew anything about CFB could have foreseen Bama having guys leave. Oh, and I’m pretty sure both of these games were scheduled within the past 3 years, if not sooner.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
I’d be up for some car pooling there if need be.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
glad you agree. you guys have a new kicker?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Tommy Rees is indeed terrible.

April 17th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Coming off a national title, plus there is never a “good” time to play Bama.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
I was really disappointed that “puke old style” or Old Style were not in urban dictionairy.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Exactly. The Irish achieve nothing but raising my blood pressure during games by starting him. Fuck, I’d rather have Nate Montana back.

April 17th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
You mean Nate Montegna.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
This is going to make me sick for saying this, because it should be the case, but won’t be: This year, Notre Dame’s d is going to get back a lot of the shit the Offense cost them last year. I still don’t know who is going to win out between Hendrix, Rees and Gholston. I kind of want Rees still out there. Those boneheaded turnovers can be fixed. Lot’s of cringing just thinking of the upcoming season. But I am seriously gambling on the D making the most noise in a while next year.
I hate Kelly with a passion, but I think he gets us at least 8-4 next season. And I really can’t complain about that.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
lol….
April 17th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Going with a freshman (one of the top kickers in the nation last year). Not sure he can be worse than Walsh. And I don’t agree. I think you’re being a total homer thinking Sparty won’t struggle on offense. In their first 5 games they’ll see Boise, Notre Dame and Ohio State. They’re losing at least one of those and would still have a three game stretch where they play @WIS, @MICH and host NEB. That’s a tough 3 game run.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
This is what they get for rebuilding instead of reloading.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
There are better times to play Bama, and the start of next season is pretty much as good as it gets as long as Saban is there.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Wedding daliance back in November. I got back on the right side a month later though.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Rees’s problems are very fixable. Extremely fixable. Don’t fuck up the snap. Check down when you don’t got it. Just beat that into his head and he’s actually a good college QB. I won’t cry if Hendrix or Gholston are the day one starters though.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Really? I would have thought Hendrix would be the guy. Better arm and he’s more mobile.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Can they?

April 17th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Woah, really?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
I just know that I can’t go through another Fall of watching Rees on Saturday and Alex on Sunday. I’ll drink myself to death.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
i didn’t say they won’t struggle some. gonna need to get used to the new parts. but i don’t see it being terrible. i think it would be foolish to just assume they can’t throw it.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Yup. She was/is in her pediatric residence at Duke.
/draw your own conclusions
April 17th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
He is, but Rees has had more good plays than bad since he’s become a starter. People forget that he was thrust into the starting spot as a Frosh and then took over last year. This year, he’s going to be A LOT more prepared to play like a starter. Kelly’s insufferable dickness may actuall be a blessing to Rees’s mental issues.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Gotta be Duckworth since it’s already on ESPN, but in case you missed it… awesome!
April 17th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
what if your team doesn’t have a head coach?
/g-dammit
April 17th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
True, but I dout that back in the summer of 2010, Michigan’s AD was sitting around thinking, yeah let’s play Bama in 2 years because they will lose a lot on defense. It was probably more, Jerry Jones is going to pay us $5 million to have a nominal “home” game at Cowboys stadium. Plus, we can reap all the inherant recuriting/exposure benefits that come with it.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
The most agonizing part of watching him. You had Benjamin, Hankerson, Laron Byrd and the tight ends running shallow routes that were wide fucking open and he had to lob floaty ball after floaty ball into the abyss. He is a real good person, but I do not weep for his parting.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
What did I say that was so delusional?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
just perusing your comments, this stood out…”Kelly’s insufferable dickness may actuall be a blessing to Rees’s mental issues.”
April 17th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
None of my college friends are very exuberant about him. I don’t think I’ve ever said a kind word about him in this place since he was hired.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Forget that, who’s going to be their student-athlete development coordinator?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
He was at the Combine, wasn’t he?
April 17th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
If it’s conducive to him not making mistakes, then the team is a lot better off for it.

Paypal $50 under 7.5 wins for ND.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
I love looking at schedules and finding ones where a team has a brutal run of games. Florida has a 5-week stretch of LSU, @Vandy, South Carolina, Georgia and Mizzou. That hurts. South Carolina has UGA, @LSU, @Florida and Tenn at home back-to-back. LSU has @Florida, South Carolina, @Texas A&M, BYE and then Bama over 5 weeks.
And then there’s Ole Miss.
@Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn, BYE, @Arkansas, @UGA, Vandy and @LSU.
Good luck with that Ole Miss.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Haven’t read any of the comments, though I can only assume that they were not only well thought out, but impressively reasonable too.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Some programs try to think like that which can create amusing stories like Georgia thinking Kellen Moore would be graduated in 2011 and scheduling a game
April 17th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
what, you mean you don’t have a multiple national championship winning coach that can get a top 5 recruiting class in 1/3 the time of his peers waiting in the wings to take over? well…good luck!
April 17th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
You’re naive and delusional if you didn’t think the MICH AD wasn’t looking at the depth charts.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
He was, and if some team picks him up I’ll be happy for him. Hell, Brock Berlin not only made an NFL roster, I think he started a game.

michigan’s AD is dave brandon and brandon was probably more concerned with luxury suites and hashtags on the field and q-ratings and all that.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Actually Brian Kelly was seen pushing it over in anger after another Rees red zone INT in practice.
April 17th, 2012 at 3:59 PM

April 17th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I think ND’s secondary will be horrible this year. A lot of new players back there playing in positions for the first time.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Needle = moved
April 17th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
I see Kelly only becoming even more maniacal if they win more. It won’t calm him down.
It wouldn’t take much to get Kelly behind a podium, shaking his fist in anger screaming:
“Not only are we going to New Hampshire, Tom Harkin, we’re going to South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico, and we’re going to California and Texas and New York … And we’re going to South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan, and then we’re going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House! YEEEAAAAHHH!
April 17th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Too busy to implement a bowl ban for an already lost season at 6-6 for kids who got the program in trouble.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Well the secondary has never been really an advantage for them anyway. I’m more pinning my hopes on the really, really good front 7.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
You should be dropping this kind of snark about the post itself to be honest. Way more knowledge in the comments section.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
That just lost it’s best player. Tuitt and the dude from Jersey better step up, or they’re in trouble on the DL.

April 17th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Teo left? And we are still deep enough along the line and at rusher for it not to be a total drop off a cliff.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
I got that part. I’m just saying, if he’s expecting 8, he doesn’t leave himself much room for shit to go wrong. Injury, bad call, scissor lift accident. Even some no name DE on BC could go off and turn a single game, ruining his bet.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
I will say that the ND schedule is laughably hard. Their AD should be lambasted for that. 8-4 will be tough for them to get to. 10-2 is the absolute ceiling, but that would be going 10-0 against Mich, Mich St, Stanford, Miami, BYU, Navy and Pitt 3 other shitty schools.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Easier to do with two different coaching staffs.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Overrated as fuck. He’s good, but Lynch would have most definitely been their best player on D. Without a doubt.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:10 PM

These are the quotes I’ll remember the most when Meyer flames out in 4-5 years without a title to his name.

while i agree with your hatred towards both papa johns and louisville, i must maintain the stance that dominos is still worse. at least papa johns has the garlic sauce.

Looks like a bad case of overcorrecting.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
see you then.

Lynch was an absolute beast. Probably would have blossomed. But Teo overrated? Come on man.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Recruiting wasn’t his problem. 180′ing the offense, pissing talented players off, and not realizing you actually need to play defense in a big conference was.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Well the secondary has never been really an advantage for them anyway. I’m more pinning my hopes on the really, really good front 7.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
ND fans think he’s the best LB in the country. So yeah…I think he’s overrated. He’s a good LB, not some badass, Ray Lewis-like machine ND fans (and many in the media) have led us to believe.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
This statement right here is everything that’s wrong with college football. Schedule two or three tough games and then spend the rest of the season coasting. Pussies.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Well the only things that they went out of their way to really get were the Miami and Oklahoma games. I have ZERO clue why they hooked up to play a few with Oklahoma. I really don’t. But everything else was pretty standard for the past decade plus: Two Pac 10 games, the usual Big 10 slate, an ACC school and the BC rivalry.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
I will give you that. I don’t think the Ray Lewis like machine is apt, but we definitely do love Teo a whole bunch. So I’ll give you credit in that respect. But you know he is definitely above average to really fucking good.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Only for independants, though. See, if ND was in a conference, they wouldn’t have to overcorrect after years of playing bitches.

Probably go ahead and write that as 4 shitty schools.

Probably, but I’m interested in Chyst running the show. I think he fits with Pitt perfectly.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
They’ve always played a pretty tough schedule. Only a few years in there did the schedule look like a relative breeze (even though it turned out to be far from a breeze).
April 17th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
sure it was. he had to waste schollys on such a drastic offensive change when he should’ve seen that the defensive recruiting under carr had taken a hit in those recent years and needed to be addressed. the defensive roster was thin and not that good and he took 66% and 56% offensive players in his first two years of recruiting. and the defensive players he did recruit, blew or didn’t qualify academically.
and the offense, while decent, isn’t exactly stocked.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Again, ND brings this shit on themselves when they opt to stay independent. When you can use the power of your conference (like the SEC and B10 do) it means you can schedule 1 tough game, 1 medium game and 2 cup cakes. Don’t be independent and then bitch about the one downside to it.
April 17th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Past 10 years: Michigan, Michigan State, USC, Stanford, Purdue every year. FSU for a couple years. Pitt almost every year. That is 7 programs right there that I wouldn’t exactly refer to as bitches. And that’s before we get to BC and Navy.

How is a shitty team playing shitty a jinx? The following teams are jinxed next year:
Akron
Memphis
Indiana
Tulane
UNLV
Ole Miss
Not a jinx with my Tigers. That’s just the way that it is. Some things never change…

Were those the years they added the Marines to other 3 service academies?
