Top 20 percent of earners pay 70 percent of the taxes. They pull in 60 percent of the total income. Interesting. Nice to see some actual true data.
April 17th, 2012 at 8:20 AM
Love that the WSJ would neglect to tell you that while the top 20% earned 60% of 2007 wages, they have a total of 85% of 2007 Net Worth . But no, let’s raid Medicare to cut more taxes for the wealthy.

Interesting historical data there. The highest percentage of wealthy Americans happened during Democratic leadership in the White House (mid 1960′s and 1990′s).

Read that story a couple months ago, idiotic cunty way to link it. It’s about psychotic man invading the home of a lesbian couple with graphic descriptions of brutal rape and murder. You should let people know what they’re getting into first thing in the morning.

The WSJ runs that same article every year, neglecting, just the same, to remind everyone how large the income gap has grown as well. Or the fact that the top 20 percent earn 60 percent of the income. Or that middle class wages have stagnated vs inflation for more than a decade. Or that the top five percent of earners have seen the largest income gains from 2001-2009.

April 17th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
Yeah – check that stuff every year. I’m self-employed – my goal is to write a check for $500-$1000 to the feds and likely that means I’m getting something back from the state.

I don’t know te target audience for that show Girls, but it isn’t me. Brian Williams’ daughter is cute, but the “lead” girl was uncute, unfunny, and I have no idea how she got a TV show to write, create, direct.
April 17th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
I just read that there is a slightly used leather couch for sale on Craigslist listed by an executive from HBO.
April 17th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Girls did absolutely nothing for me. I don’t like associating with hipsters in real life. Why would I want to watch them on television?
But seriously, the best shows draw you into unfamiliar environments, and make you feel a part of a world you know nothing about through strong writing and characterization. Girls just puts a camera on a collection of boring, mostly unlikable people and expects us to care. Unless you’re a part of those hipster enclaves, what appeal does the show have?

I’m having to go the other way. Common sense dictated that when I got married, I should’ve changed to the married tax rate. That’s costing me a mint this year. There really ought to be more education about W4′s.

Dunno if this made the rounds yesterday, but a guy died (drowned) during a Mud Run.
River waters weren’t supposed to be high (3-4 ft) but instead they were up to 10 ft deep and they still ran the race. With like 10,000 participants! Way to tee up that lawsuit, even organizers.

The TV bar is set real low concerning how young women are portrayed in New York. “Oh they’re poor and don’t all look like babes, this is revolutionary.” I found it interesting but I disliked all of the characters. I know versions of those girls in real life and it sucks to get stuck talking them so not convinced I’ll watch them on tv.

What? And spend MY hard earned income educating you on ways to “cheat” the gubment???? If you’re not smart enough to figure out your own taxes, then to hell with ya!!!! ‘MERICA!!!!!
No, seriously, that sucks though. High school and college kids should be taught financial math and tax prep classes should be more readily available to people. Do community colleges offer anything like that?
April 17th, 2012 at 8:53 AM
the Tennessee athletic department has cut 17 full-time positions
Losing a job sucks. However, redundancies in men’s and women’s athletic departments seem like “low-hanging fruit” when a college is looking to save money. Surprised it doesn’t happen more often. Maybe it will in the near future.

April 17th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
Every single public high school in the country should require seniors to take a basic finance. Educate them on predatory lending, credit card interest rates, how to open bank accounts, how to fill out W-4s, etc. It’s so easy to get into trouble at that age (and later). Feel like this initiative could gain at least some bipartisan support.

April 17th, 2012 at 8:56 AM
Advice – if you and your wife are both earners, make sure you file as married but withdraw your income taxes as though you’re single. Save yourself the heartache.

Played a scramble down in College Station yesterday for a college recruiting deal. Every team gets paired up with an engineering student looking for a gig. Our student was playing his 2nd round of golf ever. He showed up in dress shoes and had 3 clubs.

how is wasting tax dollars that egregiously a partisan issue
I have some inside knowledge of this event. they overspent on a meeting, but really it is an line item, optics issue. the amount they spent isn’t outrageous for a multiday training conference for 300 people. the issue is a person that wanted the big job, didn’t get it, and saw an opportunity to punish the people she felt denied her by leaking this to the IG. the heads of people that have made GSA more cost effective rolled over less than $1MM. The Federal Buildings Fund had $10.5B in revenue in 2010.

The org of that dept sounded terribly inefficient and was set up how many departments were in the 70′s and never changed. Despite the arms race in coaches pay, stadium expansion & marketing, many of the athletic depts are either bare bones staffed or inconsistent at best.

My biggest concern with her writing is that everything she puts together is now viewed as the similar Sandusky Gold Standard. Her Sunday expose was lauded, but to anyone connected to it, we could only shake our heads in wonder. So many major errors and changed stories.

Ha. Vast sums of the asian guys play them. Seriously. It’s gotta be the #1 club in the asian market. See also, what glove asian baseball players wear: Mizuno.
i keep reading that they make the smoothest iron out there. i really think i may have to trade in my ping g15s for them.

Not to diminish someone else’s accomplishments because Sara Ganim has accomplished more at 24 than I will have by 35, but how prestigious is the Pulitzer Prize now-a-days? I’m honestly asking. If you don’t work or never have worked in the news room, do you even notice? If I didn’t follow Bruce Arthur or Richard Deitsch I wouldn’t have had a clue that the awards were even given out yesterday.
For the record, I’ve not read any of Ganim’s work because the Sandusky story was ruined by this blog for me. I chose to avoid any and all coverage of the event. I’m sure she did a wonderful job, obviously.
April 17th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I only knew of it because they ran a huge piece about a tv psychic the detectives talked to in the missing DA case. I just figured it was a podunk newspaper.
April 17th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I rewatched Layne Price laying the smack down on Pete Campbell at least 5 times last night.
That first punch was a shot to Pete’s forehead. If Pete is so terrible to let that throw hit him, he had no chance.

It seems the issue is with the numerous “scouting” trips to find the proper venue for the conference and the fact that the majority of those trips were all to the same resort.
again, they overspent. again, a line item issue. but less than a $1MM (in the neighborhood of $2500/person for the conference) for the an agency division with $10B in revenue. its a witch hunt
April 17th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
That was the impression I got too. I mean I read the CDT every day and worked in the courthouse so I always followed the crime beat, but don’t recall ever seeing a stand for it anywhere.
They don’t have an 814 number though so I don’t even know where they’re run out of.
April 17th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
but how prestigious is the Pulitzer Prize now-a-days?
Cmon. Very good. If nothing this is what gets you a book deal and a great freelance rate. If you win one of these by not having to do a few years in a war zone, even better for you.
April 17th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
i’m not sure it was the best episode of the series. great directing in the episode, but it’s hard for me to say it’s the best episode without knowing where the stories of Lane, Cosgrove and Pete end up.

I’m probably the only person who watches “Fringe” still but Jared Harris is excellent as the uber villain. He’s so menacing on that show and such a whimpering simp on MM. Shows great range as an actor.

I agree, but in fairness, even Woodward & Bernstein missed on a few Watergate items. I’ve always said even great reporters (not saying she’s great or not) miss on items here or there.

Ha. When I saw that, I thought how bad your knuckles would hurt later punching a person in the forehead. But I do like the Pete Campbell character, he runs his mouth and stirs things up. He also mouths off to his father-in-law and does a great Charleston.
April 17th, 2012 at 9:53 AM

Based on what I have read, I personally paid more in taxes (on earnings in five digits) last year than did the GE corporation (on earnings in 10 digits).

Don Draper’s jacket he wore to Pete’s house was phenomenal. I loved the episode, my favorite in awhile. A lot of great lines, gave Pete alot of screen time and he’s such a slimy bastard. Though for some reason I felt sympathy for him in the cab necause he realized he will never be Don. Loved the high school girl. And the fall of Alex Mack is terrible — has to suck to peak at age 15.

I think Pete either realizes he has to just be who he is and stop trying to be like Don and Roger, or he just tries even harder to become them and it destroys him.
interestingly enough, Pete and Lane were trying to prove themselves to be as good as or like Roger/Don all episode, while all season Don is seemingly turning into the next Bert Cooper.

If anyone sees Babar, tell him he is up at #5. Rams pick is waiting next, so we should be to Jacksonville as soon as that comes in.
For the rest of you, now that we are underway, what I will start doing is sending out emails to 3-4 of you at a time as a group, so that you can see the picks and make yours once the person in front of you goes.
I would hope that if you are in the 7-15 range, you go sometime today. Anything beyond that will depend on how fast we are moving.

This is true to a large degree, but this week my brother and I were paired with an 11-year-old who had been golfing for a year and we had a great time. He was still learning, so we tried to help him out as best we could. There are certainly people who would bemoan having to wait around for the young kid, but it was fun. Plus, you know if that kid stays with golf from now on, when he’s my age he’ll be throwing darts up on the green.

Totally. That woman deserves all of the accolades she gets for her testimony. What he did to them was arguably the worst thing imaginable, yet he willingly relived the whole thing in front of the world. It was one of the saddest pieces I’ve ever read, though, and the writer wrote it beautifully. I felt as though I knew the woman after reading it, which made it even more sad.

if youre a 13, you should have NO problems whatsoever with the mp52/53/57. there’s a noticeable difference in forgiveness in terms of feel, but from 7-pw, you wouldn’t have much of a problem with blades, let alone an iron with some forgiveness.
it’s really a lot less of a drastic leap in terms of actual playability than you’d think. i noticed almost no difference in my shot performance going from cavity backs to blades…youll be fine. mizzy’s are a fucking treat.

Pete will amass power as long as be brings in the clients. He may become increasingly insufferable in the office, but this is how it goes everywhere. Eventually he will turn from seeking respect (by being like Don) to seeking clout (ala Duck Phillips).
Very few people climb the intra-office ladder without setbacks. Pete just does them spectacularly.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Gotta learn how to coach a girl first. Most important part. She won’t want to ever set foot on the golf course with you if you don’t know how to communicate effectively to a young girl. Especially with a frustrating sport like golf.

well, the difference is at some point Don and Betty were happy and exactly like Pete and Trudy. if we met Don and saw him portrayed as Pete is we’d hate him, too.

This is a sticking point for me. Yes, he brings in clients but I don’t get the impression he’s amazingly successful at this part of the job. His client base seems to be small players in the advertising business. In fact, if Roger started giving a shit, I think he could bring in much better (and bigger) clients than Pete. I mean, look at how everyone flipped their shit for a chance at Jaguar. Only Pete objected mostly because he wasn’t the one that brought them in.

No way. Do you remember how much money the Defense contractors were going to bring in and spend on PR/marketing, all gone south because of Don’s past? Pete cultivated that account for years, brought it in and got scrwewed. Yeah, Don floated the 50K loan for him but as a thank you, but Pete took the fall in the office. No wonder he’s still pissed.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
If you’re in a scramble with a monetary prize, you definitely want a chick on your team. Well, a chick that can hit the ball ok. You’re already at an advantage because she’s hitting from the women’s tees.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
That shit doesn’t bother me at all. Not sure why it would bother anyone, really. It would be great to golf with your kid, no matter where he/she hits from.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Agreed.
My wife has a sweet swing. Once we teed up at the first hole, and there was a group of old men behind us. When she went to the whites, they started to talk amongst themselves, but went silent when she hit the ball. The only comment she got was a, “Nice drive.”
April 17th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Yea, but no matter what I will never hit it farther than my husband. He is okay with that. Also, like SG said I come in handy during scrambles.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I see your point but I disagree with you. Any competent person would know before even getting involved in a bid for government money you’re going to be subjected to a background check. That should be the FIRST THING you bring up in a meeting with your peers.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
when i played kapalua in feb, one of my mom’s coworker’s played with his wife in the group behind us and it was totally unfair. she’s a scratch who plays from the men’s member tees and, i forget what hole it was, but she played from the ladies tees and drove the green. she also drove from the ladies tees and won the long drive competition.
it was extremely impressive…even from the ladies tees, the green she drove was still a good 270 yard drive (downhill, but still…).
April 17th, 2012 at 10:40 AM

sometimes that’s true, for sure. but it’s not about the distance, it’s about teeing off, then walking/driving up 40-50 yards and waiting for someone else to hit. i find it annoying.
It would be great to golf with your kid, no matter where he/she hits from.
completely different topic. the kid can hit from arbitrary spots the entire round; no need to tee off at any specific tee because he/she won’t be playing their own ball or keeping score.
and yes, i look forward to that.

there are a couple holes at my course that are total bullshit in regards to the womens tee’s. some of them are over well 100 yards up from the tips, and completely take hazards out of the mix.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
That’s shitty of you to allow her to do that.
April 17th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
I honestly didn’t think she could/would. I felt bad after and we went to go look for the bunnies. She loves to chase the bunnies (and lizards).

I let my dog out this morning in the back yard which is fenced in. Thing is, I didn’t realize that I had not locked the gate after taking out the garbage last night. Of course I didn’t remember this until after about 10 minutes when she wasn’t back at the door. Scary fucking 10 minutes of my life as I am walking around the neighborhood in my boxers in the dark looking for her.

Oh great. Let her terrorize more animals.
fact: animals terrorize other animals without help from humans.

oh man, i know exactly what you’re talking about…only i had pants on.
and the best is, after chasing my dog around in 30* weather for 45 minutes, i come back almost about to break and she’s fucking waiting for me on the front step wagging her god damned tail with a smile on her face. and she had the good idea to get a bunch of burrs all up in her leg fur, which you can imagine was extremely easy to get out*.
*wasn’t

We can’t fence in our yard easily, and ours wandered off a few times until she got to know the boundaries. The road is really narrow and busy (one of our deer get hit by a car) and that was about the most panicked I’ve been, running up and down the driveway all around looking for this dog that has no idea that cars = bad.

/team short-hair dogs (also for tick purposes, which are bad this year)

It’s still early but I’m not sure I’ll see anything cooler this year than those orcas pack hunting seals on Frozen Planet a couple weeks back

yea, that was the only thing i didn’t like about my pooch…had to get her hair cut three or four times a year at $70 a pop. no shedding tho…

You have pet deer?

Luckily she is afraid of the road, but she fucking loves the woods so I am then wondering how much poison ivy I am walking through looking for her. I eventually found her just wondering around the front of the houses going through the neighbors trash.

great way to start the work day. it’s been a couple years since either one of mine has done it, in the morning at least.
I went turkey hunting this past weekend and pulled over 2 dozen off me. fucking nasty.

I have a dog who is currently on death row, with one last appeal in the works (on a diminished capacity plea). His lifelong wanderlust, and desire to jump on humans has been combined with his devolution into insanity. He begs to get out, panics once he’s out, sprints toward the river he fears, crosses it, and then ends up on the other side, where he crosses a busy road to get to people’s houses and claw at their doors to get in. Or jumps into the face of a little kid.
He gets new crazy pills starting today. If this doesn’t work, he gets the needle.
And before you ask, SG, we live on a farm upstate. There’s nowhere else to go.

There are four does/young deer and (rarely) a buck that come by pretty much every morning/night right before it’s light or just after dark. There were only three sunday night, and when we went out, we saw the fourth on the side of the road, dying, after being hit by a car.

that’s a DIY job. The 150 dollar clippers will pay for themselves when people laugh at your dog’s awful haircut.

hah.

I wonder why they ran the “making of” special in the middle of that show’s run. That was odd.

Good luck with that however it goes. Not a fun day, things will be tough for a while but sounds like you had some good times.

Do you recall what the title of that episode was? I’ve been trying to record them as they re-air, looking for that one in particular. I haven’t had time to watch any of them with my kids yet.

Think the orcas were doing work in the Summer episode

I have grown to hate the dog. I’m sick of hating the dog. I’d rather miss the dead dog than hate the sight of the live dog. And I’m tired of people bringing him back and telling me how scared he is.

they’re all on next Sunday, all day. But either Summer or Melting Ice. When I looked at them on the TV thing, that action was listed in the description on the guide.

negative. we got out a little late and it was real windy, so tough to hear. saw a nice Tom working a field, but it was about 600 yards away, and he was gone by the time we got there.
