Dustin Pedroia on Valentine: “I don’t really understand what Bobby’s trying to do”
When Dustin Pedroia learned of Terry Francona’s unfortunate dismissal last October, and was later informed of the hiring of Bobby Valentine, we can only assume he exhibited a version of Bitter Beer Face that would even cause popular company spokesman Floyd Landis to re-examine his effort.
Here’s the widely respected and clearly frustrated Red Sox All-Star discussing the awkward Valentine-Youk situation:
“I know Youk plays as hard as anyone I’ve ever seen in my life and I have his back and his teammates have his back … I don’t really understand what Bobby’s trying to do, but that’s not the way we go about our stuff around here. I’m sure he’ll figure that out soon … Maybe in Japan or something, but over here in the US we’re on a three-game winning streak and we want to feel good and keep it rolling.”
What’s most shocking is hearing a player — especially a great player on a very good team — openly discuss his current manager in such a questionable light, more or less implying said manager’s approach is, at best, confusing. And Pedroia wasn’t pushing the line of dramatics with his words, he’s absolutely right. Top all of that off with a dig about his manager’s time in the inferior Japan league and we are likely in for another day of what could become baseball’s longest, most unnecessary pillow fight.
Imagine this happening on Francona’s watch? Beyond unthinkable. Larry Lucchino making out with Hazel Mae in a camouflage hot air balloon would hold better odds than such lunacy.
When Valentine was hired by Boston, most of us thought he would provide the needed spark in reviving an increasingly decaying rivalry that has ultimately become a forced caricature of itself. I’m just not sure anyone thought he would unleash the Contra Spread Gun on his own lineup so early, and so willingly.

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again here: fuck the Red Sox ownership for running Tito out of town.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
This really didn’t deserve another post. Yes, really.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I’m not sure if I’m more frustrated with Valentine’s constant foot in the mouth or his in game management.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Love the players on my favorite team, hate the management from the top down
April 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Yup.
But – Im on team Pedroia(of course). Nothing wrong with public comments backing your teammate when your coach decided to make public comments himself. You know what we would see written today if the players all made ‘no comments’ yesterday? A slew of articles, and Im sure a post here, about how nobody in the clubhouse likes Youkilis.
I fucking hate this coach. EXCUSE ME, manager.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
I think, at least right now, that Cherington might be ok. But I’m with you on everyone else.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
/standing ovation
April 17th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
All-Star player saying his manager is basically clueless? Yeah, agreed. Not really a true news item.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
CJ in a rage! Watch out world!
/watches CJ elbow Letang and Crosby in thier heads
April 17th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
What Im confused about is it happened yesterday morning, before Duffy’s post. Probably could have all been included in one post.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Schilling is right.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
And I kind of liked Bobby V when he was the Mets manager. But he’s an absolute joke as is the Red Sox upper management. I feel bad for cj, TJ, St Bear and the other Sox fans here who have to put up with this crap on their favorite team.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
Glad we agree.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
havent been following this storyline much, but it comes off as the players complaining about something new and different. is this the case?
April 17th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
God I hope actual hockey is played tomorrow night. Fuck the Penguins right in their sandy vaginas.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
He’s going to say things all year that don’t jive with the current climate of players in the Red Sox clubhouse. Fans will have to get used it. The players may too, or they’ll have to just tell him to knock it off. Basically, the Red Sox are going to have to give Bobby a chance to do it his way. While I personally think it’s the wrong way for his current collection of players, he’s been hired and you’ve got to give him a shot.
Only seen a handful of Red Sox games this year but his in game management has left some things to be desired. Most notably what he did with Bard yesterday.
Hehe.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
BEAST.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
If the manager can’t overcome his shortcomings, and if the player’s can’t get over his shortcomings off the field, then the team never deserved to be any good in the first place.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
No.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
In case of implosion, ive prepared to root for the Nationals since spring training just for this season. Ill never be a full fledged two timer like SC with the Cubs and Yanks, but I need a good story to root for this year
April 17th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
It’s just such a 180 from what Francona was. I’m guessing that was the idea by management when they hired Valentine to shake things up, but they couldn’t have envisioned all this so early in the season.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
If Neal isn’t suspended, there may be strechers on the ice tomorrow night.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
well then bobby v sounds like a prick.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
And Im fine with ‘shaking things up’. Im fine with running spring training differently, and holding players more accountable. BUT his comment was just plain idiocy. Yeah, like what Ive really been thinking about Youkilis these past few years is that he’s not emotionally invested in the game. Fucking Christ.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Just saw the shuttle fly over. Fucking coolest thing I have seen in a while.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
You know, fuck Pedroia. That team shows up in September and this doesn’t happen.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
I don’t really understand what Bobby’s trying to do, but that’s not the way we go about our stuff around here.
The way you go about your stuff wasnt working.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
BEAST.
What about the one that would shoot out the rotating blasts? That one sucks. Spread gun is the best.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
And for the latest episode of “As the Red Sox Turns…” we give you Mighty Mite using the media to argue with his idiot manager.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Francona was perfect for that town. Complete horseshit that he was let go.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Unfortunately, this overshadows david ortiz going beast mode the past few games
April 17th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
well then bobby v sounds like a prick.
This guy is a prick? Nooo, I refuse to believe it.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Agree. He was the Poland Spring to their Girardi. Just goes well together.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Hernia, i am surprising myself by saying this, but the Mets are actually fun to watch so far.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Cherington is gonna get canned.
He did a lot of work under Theo, and it’s been said that he was opposed to some of his bad moves under him. But he has no power over personnel, was opposed to the manager, and is going to be the scapegoat if/when it falls apart.
There’s no question in my mind he’d make a good GM, but if it’s between Lucchino admitting he made bad personnel (manager/player) decisions, and Cherington being a sacrificial drug-abusing marriage-defiling lamb, then I think I know which way it’s ending.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
I still want to meet someone who has beaten either Contra or the first Ninja Gaiden. Both games are damn near impossible.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
2 WS titles in 7 years, 90+ wins every year. I know there’s a Pink Hat stereotype that everyone likes to perpetuate, but I was pretty satisfied with things.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Just saw the shuttle fly over. Fucking coolest thing I have seen in a while.
It is cool, but the news reports have all been acting like this is the first time that the shuttle has ever been carried across the country on the back of a modified 747. Which it most definitely is not. A good chunk of the shuttle missions landed at Edwards AFB in California after which the shuttle was carried back to Florida in this same way.
/not sure why this annoys me so much
April 17th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
not even close…i got pretty deep into contra, but never to the end.
in the ninja gaiden they released for 360, i couldnt get past the 2nd level.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Agreed, not exactly the dark years. Their best run yet.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
See I miss him, but I’m not 100% sure he needed to stay. He dropped hints a few times that the players weren’t responding to him (even though Pedroia himself said they just needed to play better, it’s not like football where the coach/gameplan matters on every play).
What they needed was a no-nonsense guy who could rein in players who had gotten lax, while maintaining a solid front to the media. You wouldn’t argue with or air a grievance about your your wife/husband in front of friends, why would you about your team in front of the media. I’ve been saying this ever since he started ripping on Bard not throwing the changeup enough.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
You may be right but it seems to me Valentine is setting himself up quite nicely to be the fall guy if things go bad.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Ripple..it got bigger and destroyed more stuff
April 17th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Schilling is right.
He’s also a major league douchebag.
Hate what you will about Bobby V’s personality, but the man’s a damn good manager.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
This. I was really okay with Tito staying, or a good replacement coming along… but there wasn’t an urgency for a change if this was the alternative.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Ya, but like it or not, the Red Sox have no reached “what have you done for me lately” status. And lately = no playoffs, last year’s collapse, and that embarrassing (albeit way overblown) “scandal”.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I got fairly far in Super Contra but the original Contra kicked my ass consistently. I almost beat Ninja Gaiden 2, but the first one (for NES) I barely got past the 4th world.
Hardest game I ever beat was definitely the original Mega Man.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I figure the red sox will be ok this year based solely on not having bobby jenks or john lackey available to pitch as well as JD Drew not staring at called strikes for 3 hours a day
April 17th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
The anterior capsule of Daniel Bard’s shoulder as he was leaving fastball after fastball out of the zone, well past (I assume) a career-high in pitches, begs to differ.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
So, does Bobby V make it through the end of April, much less the end of May?
April 17th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Link? He is basically an interim manager
April 17th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
I just saw the summary on gamecast yesterday and saw our new RF take 5 straight pitches for a called strikeout with the tying and winning runs on base. Almost had a meltdown until I was informed that not one of the even threatened the strike zone.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Yah, WWoS, the umpire was flat out shit.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
One of the funniest things I saw last year was when David Ortiz’s son was doing Drew’s batting stance and immitated him looking at a called third strike and dropping the bat.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I’ll say the same thing that was told to me about residents/nurses.
There are a ton of people who are qualified to manage a major league game. All-star second basemen don’t grow on trees.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
really? as good as Tito was, some pretty questionable things happened under his watch last september.
I like Pedroia, but he’s being a whiny little bitch.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Battletoads was impossible
April 17th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
All things considered, id rather have Bobby V than Dusty Baker!
/watches a cincy pitcher lose an arm
April 17th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
In his defense, you know how annoying it is to try to play cribbage alone? I’d be bitchy, too if I drew a 4-5-5-6-6 and had no one to show it to.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
That’s a universal fact, come on.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
/knocks on wood that Bobby doesnt kill Bard’s career
April 17th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Ross got screwed yesterday. Even I can agree on that. Fernando Rodney has never been able to throw strikes consistently. Larry Vanover gave him that save.
Ross should have protected the zone though. He’d been calling that strike 2 inches off the plate all day. Bard and Shields got that call too.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Bard had 7 walks. If he was getting that pitch, exactly how far off the plate were those 28 pitches???
I said at the start of the year, I don’t like the move because Bard can’t hold his release deep into starts, because he couldn’t deep into relief outings. I hope that changes soon.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
And Bard still walked 7? Yikes.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Oh quit your goddamn bitching and take off the tin foil tuxedo. I watched the whole game. He got that call all game. 3 of those walks came in the final inning where he was pulled 2 batters too late.
You can look at the FX if you want. He got called strikes off the plate.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
His release point looks pretty consistent save for the 7th inning as well. Throwing 40 sliders is why he was so fatigued around the 95 pitch mark.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I was joking. Just like Htown. Relax dude.
April 17th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Good on his release. Bad on the 40 sliders, though that is probably because his fastball command (per him) was so awful.
April 17th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
FREDDY GARCIA!!!!
/laughs at yankees
//will laugh when Andy Pettite flames out as well

This is bobby working his magic. He is taking on the bad guy role, while simultaneously creating a stronger, more cohesive team.
