The Football Outsiders Really, Really Love Robert Griffin III
How much do they love the Heisman-winning QB from Baylor?
The Football Outsiders devised some sort of scoring system to rate QBs coming out of college. It’s an intricate formula that involves many variables. Among them – career college games started, career completion rate, difference in passer rating between junior/senior year and run-pass ratio of a QB in his final college season.
Now, the scores:
Peyton Manning (Tennessee): 1,784
Drew Brees (Purdue): 2,190
Philip Rivers (NC State): 2,476
Andrew Luck? He scored just under Manning (1,749). Robert Griffin? He scored higher than … any other QB, ever (2,530). Redskins fans, rejoice!!

As do I. Sean Taylor started it, but RGIII might push me fully into having a secondary team in the NFL.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
If I remember correctly this formula predicted Cam would be a bust, no? Not that one prediction invalidates it…
April 16th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Love RG III. Even as an Eagles fan I would love to see him really do well.
Problem is, the other two people in this picture: http://www.wtop.com/emedia/wtop/24/2406/240619.jpg

I agree, Jose. Dude i gonna be must watch TV like Vick was for me when he came out.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
God I hope Trent doesn’t end up with the browns.

I am rejoicing; recent disappointments can’t dampen my enthusiasm for what this young man could mean to the franchise. Very excited for September.

Lisk should have written this post.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I hope he succeeds, except against the Cowboys.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
you shouldve read the FO post…

That play is badass.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
griffin’s great and everything, but lets slow down…vick in and coming out of college was ELECTRIC. RGIII aint there.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
They still play in the NFC East right?
April 16th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
jose ovechkin, what do you know about the two WKU players shot over the weekend?
April 16th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Imagine what it could be like watching a Redskins game and not being the most god awfully boring football game on tv for once? I don’t know if I’m ready for that.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
recent disappointments can’t dampen my enthusiasm for what this young man could mean to the franchise.
cmon now. dan snyder still owns the team
April 16th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
So of the 8 already in the league, 2 were badass Manning, Brees, 1 was top-10 (Rivers), 1 was solid (Palmer), 1 was serviceable (Pennington) and 3 were pretty shitty.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Pretty cool story about the 9 year old kid with CP at Tebow’s charity event on Van Pelt’s radio show. Say what you want about TImmay, but dude makes shit happen. I want to play TPC.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Ruminations like this one add to the list of why I don’t watch or pay attention to the NFL Draft. Same can be said for any of the other sports and their respective drafts.
April 16th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
I wonder how much this comes in to play. I know Dalton was the highest ranked prospect last yeatr based on this formula, and good QBs from non-bcs schools may be more likely to start as freshman/sophomores, so maybe this is designed to balance that out?
April 16th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Oh, I hear ya. He’s the closest to that athletic ability at QB that we maybe have ever seen, no?
April 16th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE!!!
April 16th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Oh, I hear ya. He’s the closest to that athletic ability at QB that we maybe have ever seen, no?
Randall Cunningham?
April 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
I really like Robert Griffin, but I hope he gets sacked 100 times, and that Snyder ends up firing big Shanny for not firing little Shanny, and then trades RGIII for cents on the dollar to the Texans in two years. Where he becomes All Pro for however long you want.
Also, I hope a brick falls out of FedEX stadium and hits some litigious person in the head in the same week that an accountant forgot to pay Snyder’s liability premiums.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
randall cunningham.
RGIII’s more colt mccoy (in college, not saying anything about his pro prosepcts) than vick. RGIII passed first, ran second. high paced offense. multiple WR sets.
in terms of just athleticism tho? yea, vick and RGIII are very similar.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Randall Cunningham?
too long ago, doesn’t count. When he says, in the history of mankind, he means recently.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
How did they come up with the factors they used? Just throw bullshit into a regression and see what works?
April 16th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Next to nothing excepting for unsubstantiated rumor on message boards. I know exactly where it happened but everyone I know from WKU either left the area a year or two ago or hasn’t gotten back to me yet.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Guilty as charged.

* – If they can build a team around him without draft picks or the cap $$$ the NFL took away.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
I love Randall but RGIII is arguably of olympic ability. Was Randall of the same cloth? I don’t know (And I loved Cunningham). I think the guy is going to be a goddamn freak in the league.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
How did they come up with the factors they used? Just throw bullshit into a regression and see what works?
one of the variables was hotness.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:05 PM
god, i hope he does well. i love the guy for what he has done for baylor, but this hype is out of control.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:07 PM

I think “moving the needle” is weighed too heavily in the formula. And then I realized it was a website and it all made sense.

Outside of Redskins haters, who isn’t pulling for RGIII? He seems as talented as it gets, and he’s seems just as nice.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
no, but i don’t think RGIII was as good a punter as cunningham, so i guess the “things that neither will be doing as QB’s” comparison is a draw.
/i keed
but seriously, both were QB’s that were more athletic than the majority of their defensive counterparts…i think we’re splitting hairs.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:08 PM

i think he could qualify for the 400H right now. He missed out by a few tenths of a second as a senior in high school.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I knew that dog answering the phone was nothing but trouble.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
i wouldn’t say im “pulling” for him. warrick dunn was a nice, talented player that did a lot for people, but i never particularly wished him any professional success because of it. im not wishing failure on RGIII either though.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
RGIII isn’t going to run nearly as much as Vick did.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Skins fans here in DC are already getting the homer levels to huge proportions. I actually heard a radio show host say that he thinks Griffin is better than every other NFC East QB right now. This was like a month after Eli won his second Super Bowl.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I hope he has enough success to fix his underbite.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
spencer, you suck and you shouldn’t be allowed to participate in this year’s mock draft. I also don’t buy your apology.
But there’s nothing I can do about it. But that doesn’t mean you don’t suck.
And if anybody else makes a stupid pick, I’ll protest it, too.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
If he’s on my nfl team or fantasy team, I am pulling for him. Everybody else can rot.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
I have a buddy who is a huge skins fan and also a massive homer, but from the few that I have met, doesn’t that about describe every Redskins fan?
April 16th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
dirt…i wasn’t apologizing to you, i was apologizing to the others that participated. you don’t deserve an apology for being such a bitchy little child about a fucking commenter mock draft.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
dirt…i wasn’t apologizing to you,
oh, but you have, many times. And I’ve never accepted.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
probably because you knew i didn’t mean them.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
i wish you ill
April 16th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
and i wish you recovery…it must be hard to be so cantankerous that something so minute would upset you so. i think we’ll host a car wash with all the proceeds going to the foundation to fight this disease.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
i think we’ll host a car wash with all the proceeds going to the foundation to fight this disease.
sounds like something else you’ve dreamed up while on the weed, but won’t be following through with.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
speaking of dreaming…i wonder who i should pick to fuck up the mock draft again. i wasn’t planning on doing that until you started bitching up a storm.
April 16th, 2012 at 3:29 PM

fucking up is one of the few things you do well without planning. I fully expect you to take to your little bully pulpit and look like a buffoon.

Indeed. I don’t want to wonder in too close though, lest I get caught in the crossfire.

Was that really Dirt in that baby video he posted this morning? If so, his voice has really screwed up my perception of him. This has messed with me all day.

Pfft. Nothing happened here but a bunch of wind and six drops of rain. My mother, on the hand, spent most of Saturday night in the basement under the stairs. She lives about three miles where the tornado hit Wichita. She lost a tree.

I told her to keep it on a leash, but nooooo. It’ll be fine unteathered during a tornado outbreak.

She actually got mad at me. I keep my ringer off on my phone and intended to turn the ringer on when I went to bed. I didn’t. She called scared. I didn’t listen to the message until the next morning. I’m a horrible son.
