Here are Some Spring Football Game Attendance Numbers That May Surprise You
In some portions of the country, the Spring Football game is most definitely an “event.” I hear “Spring Football” and instantly think of the scene in Dazed and Confused when Pink goes to the baseball game (his crew is going to deliver a beating to Mitch) and the old couple pulls the QB aside and goes, “This arm ready to throw about two thousand yards next fall? … We’re depending on you boys and let me tell you what. You’re looking good. Thirteen starters coming back. Twenty-two lettermen looking tough.” For the locals in the South, it’s always time to talk football.
As compiled by the Gazette, here are your Top 17 Spring Football game attendance numbers. As expected, six of the top eight crowds were in SEC country. It’s pretty surprising USC generated 15k.
Alabama 78,526 (SEC)
Texas 46,000 (Big 12)
Georgia 44,117 (SEC)
Auburn 43,427 (SEC)
Florida State 40,631 (ACC)
Florida 38,000 (SEC)
South Carolina 34,513 (SEC)
LSU 33,000 (SEC)
Clemson 28,000 (ACC)
Michigan 25,000 (Big 10)
Oklahoma 20,000 (Big 12)
Missouri 18,614 (SEC)
Boise State 17,123 (Whatever conference the Broncos are in)
North Carolina 17,000 (ACC)
USC 15,515 (Pac 12)
Louisville 15,000 (Big East)
Miami 10,000 (ACC)
Dead last? Boston College, which drew 200 fans. Let’s see … how are you going to spend a lovely Saturday in Boston? Watching the dreadful Eagles toss the pigskin around? I’m going to guess no.

I’m going Saturday to watch an even worse UK toss the pigskin around. Of course, the practice is a 5, so I’ll be drunk around 2.

Boise State 17,123 (Whatever conference the Broncos are in)
I know this isn’t laziness. But it does come off as dickness. They are in the Mountain West for one more season and then move to the Big East. You guys have written about it kind of a lot you know.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:02 PM
It’s pretty surprising USC generated 15k.
It is? In what sense?
April 16th, 2012 at 7:03 PM
Mildly surprised there is that many people in Idaho.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:03 PM
Spring football is one of those things that’s better in practice than in execution…you think “Hey, a football game in April” but then after 15 minutes you’ll glad it was free of charge and you leave (although I think UW charges $5 now and give it to charity)
April 16th, 2012 at 7:03 PM
So what does this mean for the state of college football as a whole? Is it trending up or down?
April 16th, 2012 at 7:04 PM
So what does this mean for the state of college football as a whole? Is it trending up or down?
I’d call it a fluid situation.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:04 PM
In the sense that there were about 88 better things to do in Southern CA this weekend.

Through the roof!

nebraska’s was snowed out and wasn’t osu has sold 40k tickets to their upcoming one already…fluid situation indeed.

“This arm ready to throw about two thousand yards next fall? … We’re depending on you boys and let me tell you what. You’re looking good. Thirteen starters coming back. Twenty-two lettermen looking tough.”
This type of stuff happened to me in high school in regards to basketball. There was even a guy who’d give us gift certificates to the local Dairy Delight place that most small towns have. Providing we scored 15 points in a game. He wasn’t much into advanced sabermetrics.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:08 PM

USC fans and alum may be horrible people but I’m not sure surprising is the right word for it at this point

78K at Tusculoosa. I know footbaw is big in ‘Bama, that that is ridiculous.
Probably woulda been a good day for wettin’ a line, ya know?
April 16th, 2012 at 7:10 PM
that that is ridiculous.
Gotta work on that stutter.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:13 PM

Where do you hail from, Old Dude? I only know one person here that says, “wettin’ a line” meaning to go fishing. He’s from Mississippi.

In Alabama, any day is a good day for cousin fucking.
Oh wait, you were talking about fishing, weren’t you….
April 16th, 2012 at 7:14 PM
Might want to wait until after, you know, all teams have had their spring game.
Also, an acknowledgment that severe weather hampered many of those games scheduled in the midwest.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:16 PM
I think I read that differently than you. I interpreted it as surprising they got even 15k to show up. I am probably wrong though. To be honest this whole exchange is confusing me more.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:16 PM
More like 2500 from what could be seen on TV.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:17 PM
Also, an acknowledgment that severe weather hampered many of those games scheduled in the midwest.
Nebraska canceled their game. The entire state shows up for that one.

Speaking of high school and whatnot, here is a video of a tornado forming NW of my hometown on Saturday evening. The town looks kind of weird because it was 95% destroyed a few years ago by a tornado.

Penn State will end up either 2nd or 1st on the list. They typically draw around 70k and the game is on this Sat.
But if Duffy waited that long Michigan wouldn’t be atop the Big Ten list.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:21 PM
My bad TBL – I assumed this was a TyDuffy joint since Mich was involved.

I grew up in Memphis, but my mom’s parents lived in Greenville, MS. Spent many a summer down there, swatting mosquitoes and eating fried chicken.

Hey, you watching Astros vs Nationals? Weiland vs Strasburg. Decent match-up so far.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:32 PM
Hey, you watching Astros vs Nationals? Weiland vs Strasburg. Decent match-up so far.
I wish. Still at work. Weiland looked good the other day, but just makes the mistakes that young pitchers do. Has trouble hitting spots over and over again, and after awhile he leaves one out over the plate to get swatted.

Weirdest humblebrag ever.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:36 PM
Watched the tornado vid. Dang, that is chilling. ‘Bout all you can do is stay low and try to ride it out.
It always impresses me that folk are willing to stand outside, sometimes in the path of a tornado, to get this kind of footage. Balls of steel, I’d say.
April 16th, 2012 at 7:39 PM
I think I read that differently than you. I interpreted it as surprising they got even 15k to show up.
No, you read it the same way I did. I just don’t think it’s particularly surprising. USC fans like their team a lot. When they’re good
April 16th, 2012 at 7:46 PM
When I lived in Oklahoma one of my neighbors was an amateur storm chaser. I was in college at the time and he was probably like 40 or so, and that guy was an absurd alcoholic. I’d be out smoking on the front porch and he’d pull up in his busted Jeep Cherokee, turn the car off (most of the time), and pass out in his car like 3 times per week. Nice guy though.
April 16th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Nice guy though.
Old dudes. Whatcha gonna do with ‘em?

Fox Sports Houston is showing Rockets and Nuggets instead. I found the Nats regional channel on DTV, but it’s blacked out (fuck you Washington).
So I’m missing the game. Watching Top Gear instead. And doing work.

Not sure what this means other than the fact Michigan will once again lead the nation in attendance for actual football games.

April 16th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
Mildly surprised there is that many people in Idaho.
my freshman year at u of idaho (1984) the state had just passed 1 million population and had recently upped the drinking age from 18 to 21 but only to get federal funding

just read that. low poit for both. none of it was funny, so i think it was real, because they were not using their vaunted wit. me and dirt went at it for a while last spring and i was pissed so i didn’t even try to make it funny. i have much thicker skin in real life than on the net

Which brings me to…
me and dirt went at it for a while last spring and i was pissed so i didn’t even try to make it funny.
No offense, but that means he won. As opposed to 98% of the commenters here, Dirt is merely an act. He tells good stories and baits people. That is his thing. He is actually an insurance adjuster living in Morehead, MN. His sister has scabies and his mother dated George W. Bush back in the day. He is still pissed off he can’t find a way to sell his Geo that he drove in college. Instead of his bought Russian bride using it as an outdoor toilet.
April 16th, 2012 at 9:43 PM
Yeah Spencer, only six home games this year for us (thank God). Will still have the average attendance mark though.
Serious question, would OSU fill an extra 10 – 15k seats for pretty much every game if they added them? I think Michigan is at their tipping point. They could easily sell 150k for OSU, State, ND, etc… if they had them, but they are stretching it when they say they have 110k watching them against Eastern Michigan.

I noticed that earlier. Didn’t know he claiming he had a gay brother. Not that it matters, but I was really messed up all day because I envisioned Dirt’s voice being more, um, not like that guy on 30 Rock.
