Once plaintiff attorneys start filing lawsuits against youth leagues, high schools, and colleges (including conferences, and the NCAA), football as we know it, will be dead.

Personally, I would love to represent Chris Owusu against stanford university. He was knocked out cold and was allowed to play in a game two weeks later, where he was knocked out cold again. Six days later stanford’s medical staff cleared him again! Once again, he was knocked out cold and this time he had to be taken off on a stretcher.

The teams employed the doctors. There have been non-head injury cases already settled where the teams lied about the injury to the player.

I kind of miss my old high school team doctor. If you got hurt, he’d just shoot you up with cortisone and morphine and send you back in. He later ended up in prison.

The current baseline testing will provide some evidence on short-term damage patterns. It will not be pretty for the concussed. You drag some of these demented NFL players in a court room. It is not what the NFL wants.

Goodell is an attorney. He knows this. They need to minimize PR damage until they can stockpile a war chest to pay off this settlement.

There are too many factors to consider to really make it concise. The players need to prove that the NFL knew about long term concussion effects a long time ago and never shared it and the players also need to prove that the major injury problems happened in the NFL and not sooner. And it will take long enough to be resolved that we might all forget about it by the time it gets resolved

Players chose bad contracts with less benefits for more money from likee the 50′s-last contract. Players played in equipment that didnt prevent brain trauma. Owners didnt care or look to provide better benefits or equipment. A history of team-employed doctors had a conflict of interest in determing actual medical circumstances in many instances. Everybody sues. There you go.

Not a stretch to say this is going to shape a whole shitload of legal and sporting issues for a long time to come.

Conversely, the old NFL players specifically turned down better pension and medical for better play, in the original collectively bargained contracts. Also, the players still elect to NOT wear the best concussion-preventing helmets.

The only winners will be the lawyers.

If the players can get this past summary judgment, it’ll be a monster settlement. No way NFL wants to go through discovery. It’d be like the tobacco cases- super shady memos and practices.
