Video: Todd McShay Thinks Ryan Tannehill Has Better Tools Than USC’s Matt Barkley
The Ryan Tannehill lovefest continues! Todd McShay was on Colin Cowherd’s radio show this morning and raved about the upside of Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill. Yes, the same Tannehill who is engaged to this model.* Yes, the same Tannehill who started 19 games for Texas A&M during his Aggies career.
The draft has been looking for a sexy storyline – it is written in sports media bylaws that BIG NFL DRAFT DRAMA MUST involve a QB – and Tannehill might be it. Luck and Griffin are going to be taken 1st and 2nd overall, and Tannehill’s your next best story (with apologies to Trent Richardson and Justin Blackmon).
Tannehill’s athletic, smart, and had the physical ability to be a pretty good receiver for the Aggies. He’s a unique prospect. Who is the last QB that could get selected in the Top 10 but was also a college football receiver? I can’t think of one.
If I had to compare Matt Barkley to an NBA prospect, I’d go with Jared Sullinger. Really nice college player, probably has a 10-year pro career ahead of him, but not an NFL star. Based on what I’ve seen of Barkley, I think he’s definitely a first-round pick next year.
(That being said, he’s in a stacked class, and I think Tyler Wilson of Arkansas and possibly Tyler Bray of Tennessee end up getting picked before Barkley. Not sure about Murray. Yes, I’m making that projection a year early.)
* Barkley’s girl isn’t bad, either.

Que?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Woof.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Tannehill is basically a bizarro Matt Jones, so I guess he’s a big fan of downers.

Of the hundreds of NFL players that would be more relevant, you pick an NBA guy?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Great analogy. Keep it up with the quality posts about other people sounding stupid.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
How many starts did Sanchize have at USC?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Not sure but I think Tannehill had four or five less starts than Tom Brady.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
mcshay is an idiot.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Same McShay who ranked Gabbert over Newton last year?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Just to be clear though.
McShay says Tannehill has better tools than Barkley (I guess, I’m not watching an iPhone Zapruder film). TBL compares Barkley to someone who most NBA talent guys are pretty down on. So is TBL agreeing with McShay or not?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
I don’t watch film and I can’t project from college to the NFL at all, so I can’t rip McShay for this. I have no clue why some QBs do well and some don’t.

You mistakenly added the word “round”.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
I wanna say 14. 13 his Jr year, and 1 as a Soph when Booty was injured.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Folks, I become a wireless free agent next week. Sprint is gone because of their crap service in my house. It’s down to Verizon or AT&T. I’ll be getting an android phone, the wife would like to stick with an iphone. Any thoughts/recommendations?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Also, having better tools and being able to use those tools better is not the same thing, however we all know that doesn’t matter on the internet.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
I gotta say, coming from the Mexigod’s biggest fan I find this to be one of the funniest things you’ve ever written.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Hate the company, but Verizon voice and 3G networks are pretty good.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
If I had to compare Matt Barkley to an NBA prospect, I’d go with Jared Sullinger
…. I award you no points. May god have mercy on your soul.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Mayock (GOAT) thought Suh was the 2nd or 3rd best DT coming out in his class. Not a McShay guy, but everyone misses.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Brady was a two year starter. I think he had 24 or 25 starts.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Tannehill’s your next best story (with apologies to Trent Richardson and Justin Blackmon).
no. just no. those two are near locks to be stars, while tannehill is, as you say, potentially a receiver
April 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Someone sent me this link about cell coverage a while back. Hope it helps….
April 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
I don’t see this at all. Bray will wow scouts for sure, but Barkley is going to come out of a pro-style offense and he’ll have the stats and wins to back up that experience in the Kiffin offense.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Who’s a bigger idiot? The guy who makes crazy draft projections, or the guys who rips the guy who makes crazy draft projections?
And in the end, does anyone give one piece of one small fuck about any of it?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:42 PM

My mistake, not four or five, five or six then.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Aaron Murray? Yeah, he’s not getting drafted before either Barkley, Wilson or Bray. He may (MAY) measure 6 feet tall. I’d be shocked if he leaves early.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
GAMBLIN’ MAN
April 12th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
I’m almost positive he had 25 starts.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Definitely, but there is a stark difference in the gap G. McCoy (aforementioned DT) between Suh verses Newton and Gabbert.
But this screams of McShay trying to get attention with little risk. I am sure if Barkley continues to develop on his current trajectory, next year McShay will be saying he “made the leap” and is now better prospect than Tannehill. If not, he gets to say he was right. No downside for him.

so you are using this how? do you think suh was the best or is not having a great start to his career?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Best check yourself next time, stupid.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Bray is a stud. I can’t wait to see him play a full season with his entire offense, if it ever freaking happens.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
If I had to compare Matt Barkley to an NBA prospect, I’d go with Jared Sullinger. Really nice college player, probably has a 10-year pro career ahead of him, but not an NFL star. Based on what I’ve seen of Barkley, I think he’s definitely a first-round pick next year.
Wh-wh-what???
April 12th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
So you are comparing him to Sanchez?
April 12th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Also, McShay is retarded as always. It’s so comforting knowing that dude is wealthy and on TV. He is so useful and full of knowledge.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
If I had to compare Matt Barkley to a random object in my living room, I’d go with the loveseat. Not long enough to comfortably sleep on, but it came with the set.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
tannehill must have an awesome agent.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
If you are an NFL team and you think he’s the real deal then it makes sense to trade up to get him — especially with the new cap rules, it won’t totally set you back. Just kind of set you back. With that being said I didn’t watch much A&M this year so I just go by what I read.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
I wonder if Rick Spielman (Min GM) and McShay have a connection. Vikings looking to get a haul for a Tannehill suitor.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
How is this controversial? Tannehill is bigger/stronger/faster and has a better arm than Matt Barkley. It doesn’t mean he’s a better QB. In related news Jay Cutler has better tools than Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Jim Drunkenmiller has better tools than Joe Montana blah blah blah. It doesn’t matter and if the internet disagrees than the internet is stupid. Additionally the number of starts a player has made has no bearing on his raw talent/tools.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
If I had to compare Sprint wireless service to an NBA prospect, I’d go with Bargnani. Really nice euro player, probably has a long term contract, but expensive and mostly useless. Based on what I’ve seen of android on Verizon, I think it’s definitely your first pick.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
If I had to compare Matt Barkley to a co-worker, I would go with Bret, my technical writer. He is kind of a douche, but he gets the job done.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
i think you’re wrong, but way to go out on a limb saying barkley’s a first round pick next year.
April 12th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
And what do you do?
April 12th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
I don’t think Anthony Davis will be Tim Duncan or anything, but he’s definitely a first round pick.
/TBL
April 12th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
If I had to compare Matt Barkley to a condiment, I would go with ketchup. It’s good when I remember to dip chicken fingers and corn dogs in it, but completely useless when I am eating grown up food, like steak.

If I had to compare Oranges to apples, I go with Granny Smith, tart and colourful, something you can eat often but won’t wow anyone. Based on what I’ve seen from Red delicious Apples that’s your first round pick.

April 12th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
definitely more of a Adrian Peterson
April 12th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
More like, Bray COULD be a stud. I think Tenn is going to have a damn good passing attack this year, but Bray is far too stupid (as a football player) for my tastes. Having said that, watch him throw for 3,500 this year.
That everyone misses when trying to predict the success of college kids in the NFL.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
It’s a stupid argument and it happens every year. Some analyst or draft pundit will talk about some guys physical skills in relation to someone else and every idiot on the internet makes the leap that analyst/draft pundit meant new player X > established player Y. What follows is a collection on statements along the lines of “talk to me when player X actually wins something” or “how can you compare a guy who has never played in the league to a HOF player?” etc.
Just because I head to Sears and buy a super awesome set of craftsmen tools doesn’t make me better than a typical carpenter it just means I have radical tools.
/Knows nothing about tools

If I had to compare anal sex to an american actress, I’d go with Paz De La Huerta. Really nice fun, probably lasts 15 minutes, but messy and demeaning. Based on what I’ve seen of blowjobs, I think that’s definitely a first-round pick.

That’s twice I’ve used the “and what do you do?” and people haven’t gotten it. I’m kind of disappointed. Rest assured, if you see that used, it means you said something incredibly logical and counter to a stupid post.

If I had to compare the Bob Knight cold call to a porn genre, I’d go with blindfolded bukkake. The girl never sees it coming, and the deluge lasts what seems like forever.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Not saying Tannehill is great but Matt Barkley fucking sucks.

April 12th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Nah, he’s not stupid. He just didn’t give a shit last year. He was obviously thinking his shit didn’t stink and thought he could just sling it and get by. I think Kentucky woke him up and he’s apparently doing all the right things since then. We’ll see.
And he’ll throw for 3500 in his sleep if he stays healthy.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Interesting, against-the-grain take for sure.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Well this is not true at all.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
And Tenn will be 7-5 at best and then he, Da’Rick and Hunter are all gone. Tennessee is a sinking ship as long as Dooley is there I’m afraid. I’ve never seen a team lose 6 (or was it 7?) coaches in one off season. That shit is crazy.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Can’t really argue with any of that. I will say he has recruited well and the talent level is markedly better than it was a few years ago, but yeah, without those three it’s a scary thought based on Dooley’s past performance.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Sean Jean: Truth be told, Tenn scares the shit out of me this year as they will trot out the best WR corps in the SEC for sure, and perhaps the country. The JUCO kid they
boughtsigned is going to be the best 3rd option in the country.April 12th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Yep. Their passing offense last year before Hunter went down was just silly as well. I agree though, those are 3 of the most talented players at QB and WR in the country, not counting Patterson. Again, if they’re healthy and they get anything at all from the running backs, they’re going to be really tough to stop. We’re stacked at TE also. Experienced OL. Could be a really fun offense to watch.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
lol @ bought. Just caught that.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
I’m not sure they’re all that talented though, and they have to deal with 3 of the best 15 defenses in the nation within their own division (UGA, UF and SoCar). Add that to Bama and Mizzou, and I just don’t see them having that great of a year, especially with the transition to the 3-4 on defense.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
I thought you’d like that.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
I think they are extremely talented, just very unproven and under-performing thus far. A lot of people hated the previous OL coach the entire time he was here, so we’ll see how much it helps to have a new OL coach and actually have a dedicated RB coach, and a good one.
As for their success, with Dooley, honestly anything is possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they win 8 or 9 games because the talent is there on offense, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they win 3 games and he gets fired midway through the season. His tenure has been a circus.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
And their defense was absolute garbage the last two years. It always completely collapsed after half time under Wilcox, so I think anything is an improvement. I’m amazed so many schools came after him. I did not understand that at all.
April 12th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
He was great at Boise. Chris Petersen creates more jobs than Romney at this point. It’s amazing.
April 12th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
barkley has to play for kiffin, what do you expect?
