Shots Fired: Steve Spurrier Takes Aim at Richt, Saban and Miles
Steve Spurrier was in front of reporters. As usual, the Old Ball Coach had some zingers in his brain just dying to escape. He eschewed fat, sloppy men this time and took aim at some of his SEC colleagues.
He got in a nice shot at Mark Richt when asked about the South Carolina vs. Georgia game being moved later in the season.
“I don’t know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.”
Spurrier deployed a deft backhanded compliment for Nick Saban.
“He’s got a nice little gig going, a little bit like (John) Calipari. He tells guys, ‘Hey, three years from now, you’re going to be a first-round pick and go.’ If he wants to be the greatest coach or one of the greatest coaches in college football, to me, he has to go somewhere besides Alabama and win, because they’ve always won there at Alabama.”
And why not jab his thumb in Les Miles’ open sore for good measure?
“I think it’s Saban. He’s considered the best. Les Miles is considered one of the best, when you look at number of wins. I believe you’re as good as your record. You are whatever your record is. Don’t give me any excuses or that you can’t win at this place.”
He was, alas, far more diplomatic when asked about Bobby Petrino.

My healthy respect for Mr. Spurrier is once again renewed. Awesome.

Go get ‘em, Steve.

That’s a shot at Dan Mullen. Has to be.

Such a great line about UGA. True, too. Their stance is far too strict when compared with their counterparts.

Absolutely despised him when he coached Florida. Now, he’s my favorite not-dead or not-suspended-by-a-show-cause-penalty-for-five-years coach.
P.S. – Go fuck yourself, Brett Bielema.

Also, he’s being honest about not wanting to play his division rivals later on. SC’s depth issues always bite them in the ass as the season progresses.

That one still slays me.

I fail to see what shot he took at Les Miles.

And the line about Saban is stupid. He won a title at LSU which was not really a national powerhouse when he took over.

I’d love to pound some beers with that old man. I’m just the kinda guy that just doesn’t give a shoot, ya know?

“FSU. Free Shoes University”
“Fire at the FSU library. The real shame is some of the books hadn’t been colored in yet”.
OBC knows how to piss people off. He’s better with age

OBC is the gift that keeps on giving. As a SC alum, one who sat through the debacle of Brad Scott’s last year and Lou Holtz’s first year (combined record: 1-21), I think Spurrier’s been a godsend.
That shot at UGA was vintage Spurrier–still has his fastball.
