Yardwork: Yu Darvish Fan Really Loves Yu Darvish
Here’s the official transcript of the interview:
Yu Fan: “Oh yes, I … Love … Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!”
Rangers Guy: “Guess he liked it. Here’s the bag, here’s the hat, congratulations.”
Yu Fan: “No … I love … Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!”
Speaking of Yu, his Rangers beat the Mariners 1-0 last night behind seven scoreless innings from Neftali Feliz, who was making his first career start. We’re just five games in, but I’m already afraid of this team. Tons of pitching, endless bats, and Nolan Ryan staring you down from his seat in the front row. No thanks, I’ll pass.
Tigers 5, Rays 2 — Also frightening? The Detroit bats. Yes, there’s Prince and Miggy, but Austin Jackson is also off to a tremendous start.
Braves 6, Astros 4 — Chipper Jones returned to the lineup, hit a two-run homer, and the Braves notched their first victory of the young season. Coincidence? Probably.
D-Backs 4, Padres — Chris Young’s two-run shot in the top of the 11th was the difference, and Trevor Cahill’s Diamondback debut went swimmingly as he allowed just a run and two hits over six innings, despite six ugly walks. Arizona improved to 4-0, but it sure seems like this team won’t be widely discussed unless they rip off 15 straight. Is it the combination of playing in Arizona and being an expansion team that equates to no one paying attention to these guys? They’re very good, but again, no one cares.
Dodgers 2, Pirates 1 — Magic’s Dodgers are off to a 4-1 start, but all credit should deservedly go to calming clubhouse force, Donnie Baseball. Clayton Kershaw was Clayton Kershaw (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7K).
Yankees 5, Orioles 4, 12 innings — There are two reasons this game is in this space today: Freddy Garcia threw five, five, wild pitches. He’s a nice arm to have on deck should someone go down with an injury, but please, this guy belongs in the ‘pen for long relief, not the starting rotation. The other reason we’re talking about the Yankees? The bullpen pitched 7.1 scoreless innings. That will get you a gold star each and every time.
Cards 3, Reds 1 — The Reds have locked up their young stars for the foreseeable future, so let’s celebrate by filling up at least 9.3% of the ballpark. To be fair, it’s still chilly enough at night to keep people on the couch rather than in the stands.
Royals 3, A’s 0 — Wow, the Royals and A’s have entered the discussion! I’m happy to report that the reason they’re here is solely due to Oakland sending “G. Godfrey” to the mound, which is fun if you don’t know how to spell Gilbert Gottfried.
Cubs 7, Brewers 4 — The Cubs are in midseason form. A predictable losing record of 1-4 and horrible starting pitching. Paul Maholm, fittingly still wearing a Pirates cap in his profile shot, served up two homers and six earned runs in four innings of really trying to pitch.
Another look at the fan brawl in the Blue Jays home opener? Most certainly:

In some ways he’s the anti-Torre. He’s not out making commercials and not pushing himself in front of the team.
We’re just five games in, but I’m already afraid of this team. Tons of pitching, endless bats, and Nolan Ryan staring you down from his seat in the front row.
If they were in the NL, I might just give them the WS trophy right now. They’re not. Fighting through the AL will take its toll.

Paul Maholm did get shelled. But I liked what I saw from Dempster, Garza and F7.
Shots at the Red Sox were needed though. Their bullpen is fucking terrible.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Are we just pretending the Red Sox dont exist anymore? Because I would be ok with that.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Thats what you got out of the last 2 games?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Nice to see that baseball got all of 10 minutes before the pressing matter of two radio hosts calling the Masters champion got propped up there.
Baseball is dead. Long live baseball.

AFTERNOON BASEBALL.
Love afternoon baseball, especially when I have to help out a high school team later when the games are over and then run a 9-10 year old practice for my cousin. Can’t beat being at the field.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
I got that Thomas (who?) couldn’t strand the runners that Bard allowed to reach in the 6th. He also let one of his own base runners cross the plate. You have to admit that the Red Sox are going to have difficulty holding leads late in games. Or stranding runners when they pull their starters. Who is going to get the middle relief outs? The 8th inning outs?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Highlight from Toronto last night
April 11th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Well sc, Atchison cant pitch every day..he was great against toronto on monday.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Masterson will pitch 8 and give up a run and lose today.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Exactly.. the sooner he can be sent back to AAA the better
April 11th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
The AL East is going to be TOUGH this year. Boston doesn’t have much of a pitching staff, Yankees don’t have much of a rotation, and the Rays and Blue Jays are hungry.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Ideally, Atchison. In the 8th, Melancon(small sample size). We’ll see how it works out.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Most wild pitches in an outing since 1989. Freddy was not so good last night. Bullpen was nails though. 7.1 innings of shutout ball. They only allowed 3 baserunners too.
No.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Was happy to see Ventura’s starting Danks today and skipping Humber, let’s delay having to watch that painful regression as long as possible please
April 11th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Alright who the fuck is Justin Thomas. An injury replacement because you want Hill/Tazawa to get some more rehab/growth time? If your analysis of the Sox has anything to do with some guy who made the team on a fluke and won’t touch the team this summer, it’s pretty clear you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Their pen will be a lot better when the starters settle down (which they should, eventually). Gotta think Bard still is better than Lackey. He had more swings and misses than anyone in any start last year, so it’s entirely possible that maybe expectations were high for a guy making his first ML start.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
In some ways he’s the anti-Torre. He’s not out making commercials and not pushing himself in front of the team.
or knuckle deep in a nostril
April 11th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Well said. Youve been feisty with SC lately when he starts acting like a knowitall, I like.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
I feel badly for the Dbacks. They have a really good team, but are not going to be talked about much on ESPN or sites like this. Young, Upton, Montero, and Kennedy are really good young players that will really keep this team in the hunt for the AL West. It’s just a shame that they won’t be seen much on national TV.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Don’t worry though, Ceej. The Red Sox bullpen looks like the mid-90s Yankees staff compared to the Cubs. Lendy Castillo? Rafael Dolis? Shawn Camp? WOOF.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I don’t know if Atchison will get the run that Francona gave him. It’ll be interesting to see who of Albers/Atchison/Bowden steps up. Morales is going to be the primary lefty and given a few full innings, obviously. If Padilla doesn’t assume a bigger every day role, I’m going to assume it’s because Valentine wants him stretched out to be a starter and move Bard back (Valentine likes Padilla a lot, I believe, and I’m starting to agree).
April 11th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
For his first start, bard was decent last night. drabek was just better and the sox lineup outside of Pedroia didnt do much. I

/Cheap bastard
April 11th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Did you see him pitch on opening day? Looked like he was coming off an 8 day bender.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Low WHIP but can’t strikeout anyone. When he’s throwing strikes, he can be effective through 6 innings.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I found it funny that many analysts thought the Giants would be this great team and Arizona would regress a lot from last year. As far as I can tell, arizona got better in the rotation and they are deeper on the bench now that they have a gold glove OF (Parra) splitting time with Kubel. I dont think the Giants have enough offense to overcome Arizona.
/awaits beers from YYSA
April 11th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Which is going to be rarely. D’Backs have a chance to go all the way this year, they need Bauer up and slaying line ups like Khal Drogo right now.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
At the same time, no I dont believe youre allowed to do that
April 11th, 2012 at 11:46 AM

April 11th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Ill take any of Arizonas top 3 (kennedy, hudson, cahill) over Beckett right now. Perhaps they can throw pitches that dont end up down the middle of the plate for Miggy and The fat Vegetarian

April 11th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
For his first start, bard was decent last night.
I agree. Threw his FB a little too often and were too good of pitches that should have been out of the zone to see if hitters chase. Bautista chased a few that were up and in that had great movement. Just needs to throw all pitches in all counts. Its harder to hit someone who throws a 3-0 slider or curve for a strike then someone who throws a FB everytime there is trouble.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Apparently there was a sign at the Rangers game monday that read, “me love Yu long time”.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
I’m still waiting for Jason Lisk to pop his head in. Danny Duffy was really good last night. Bright future for that one. I watched his start when I was laying in bed. Really like how he used his fastball almost exclusively last night. When he mixed in his yellow hammer, it made for a lot of awkward swings. 10 inch break on that sucker.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
and sunflower seeds
had a party guest bring chocolate covered sunflower seeds last weekend. they didn;t suck but I wouldn;t seek them out
April 11th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
David ortiz just needs to be a dick all the time and bunt down the third base line. I would love that over strikeouts or groundouts to the shift
April 11th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Bard threw 35 sliders last night. Gotta concern you a little bit. Have to wonder how that much torque per start will affect him when he’s not used to throwing that many the last few years.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Bautista chased
how bout that look he gave the ump after striking out? apparently he’s a star now
April 11th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
Strasburg vs Johan today!!! Damnit. I have to work and miss it.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
That said, Bard still got more swinging strikes (9) on his slider than his fastball (8). Only threw 3 of those 12 changeups for strikes. First start, so gotta expect some errors but he needs to get that changeup over for strikes to be more effective.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
who throws a 3-0 slider
pours out one for Marmol
April 11th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Ha, no. I had meetings all afternoon. I just saw him nail down the 4 IP later. Forgot about that one.
I do enjoy saying crazy things without thinking then backtracking as necessary, but baseball more than any other sport becomes a part of my life. Every day after work there’s a game to watch/listen to/check the scores. There’s a lot of personal/family reasons it’s important to me, even more so the further I am away from home and less I get back there. Make fun all you want, I can handle it*.
*unless it’s from Clay
April 11th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I used to say this all the fucking time when Giambi played for the Yanks. Doesn’t even have to be a bunt, just a half-swing. After a few singles it would force them to remove the shift. But they’ll never do it.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
I’m still waiting for Jason Lisk to pop his head in. Danny Duffy was really good last night. Bright future for that one. I watched his start when I was laying in bed. Really like how he used his fastball almost exclusively last night. When he mixed in his yellow hammer, it made for a lot of awkward swings. 10 inch break on that sucker.
Yea he looked really good. When his control is on and teams are chasing he’s nasty. When they are able to lay off a bit and wait for strikes he’s gonna face some trouble. Love his long-term upside though.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
darvish-san bring respect and honor to his famiry. verry, verry good strikeout. numbel one pitchel in arrrrrr of base-a-barr. sirry ‘merican hittel all rike “oh no, darvish-san, i cannot a-hit fastbarr.” stupid ‘mericans.

Guessing you meant the NL West. And don’t worry. I expect the Dbacks to be in the mix for the division/wild cards come August. That’s when we’ll be talking about them.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
I want crawford back just to see what he can do. If he flounders again, then fuck it. I do wish the Sox had another power right handed bat. youkilis isnt a clean up hitter anymore
April 11th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Oh I’m just giving you shit. I’m envious you’ve got a competitive baseball team while I have to wait another 2-3 years for one. MLB.tv is my only access to good baseball right now. I turned off the Cubs after it was 6-0. Came back in time to watch them look stupid against K-Rod in the 9th. I actually watched more Red Sox baseball than Cubs last night. Partially because I own Bard, but I also wanted to see the Jays offense.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Hosmer is a massive bust. A horrendous bust. Bust of the year.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Bard threw 35 sliders last night. Gotta concern you a little bit. Have to wonder how that much torque per start will affect him when he’s not used to throwing that many the last few years.
It doesn’t so much. When he pitched at UNC the pitching coach, Scott Forbes, had him as a SP there and he threw 2 pitches, a FB and Slider, which he used all the time and was tremendous in the College World Series vs. Oregon St. I am more concerned that he is still reluctant on his Change. He has to have movement on it and be able to throw in any count. His FB and Slider will be so much more difficult to hit with a good change. I was always taught that all a pitcher needs to win is a moving FB and Change.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:57 AM
It’s weird that the A’s were chasing a lot last night. Not a team you expect that from. It only took 4 games for people to figure out that you pitch Cespedes like people have been pitching Soriano for years. No fastballs, breaking balls down and away.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Strasburg vs Johan today!!!
I am going to have the remote set to switch between that an Lester facing the Jays.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I cant afford mlb.tv but i did buy the mlb at bat app. Can listen to all the games and they have one free mlb.tv game per day. That will help in the dead of summer when my only tv options are Yankees on YES, Mets on SNY, or the occasional game on mlb network

I really don’t care for advanced metrics but hot damn am I infatuated with Pitch FX now. This shit is amazing. Especially the views of the release point.
Here’s Bard’s start if you Sawks fans want to check it out.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I know, it’s fine. Though the last few months have been hardly enjoyable. I’d think with Theo etc you would have some hope for the future. Watching a team grow and watching players develop is great.
It’s stupid to be attached to prospects, but I always enjoy watching “Sox” guys more than hired guns like Lackey/Crawford/Adrian.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
Patience, dude.

Great site Souvenir. Like I said, not enough Change ups, only 12 thrown. Needs more confidence in him.
I do wish the Sox had another power right handed bat. youkilis isnt a clean up hitter anymore
I agree with CrackerJack, need patience. Spring training helps but guys aren’t throwing at 100% all the time. Most pitchers are ahead of hitters and hitters don’t begin to catch up till the weather gets warmer. Bat speed increases and Youk should have his timing back in a bit.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I was guessing Nashua too. Remember when they had a dominant women’s high school basketball team? Didn’t think so.

It only took 4 games for people to figure out that you pitch Cespedes like people have been pitching Soriano for years. No fastballs, breaking balls down and away.
I used to love Soriano when he was on the yanks. I would defend his free swinging ways to the death. Now I see an at bat of his and wonder what the hell was wrong with me. I think the way the ball jumped off his bat and sounded so different than anyone else blinded me from reality.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Nope, SW.
They were ridiculous. Nationally ranked for a while. My HS won a few state titles in girls and boys, quite a few times, at class M

Gonna be a good season for me.
Looks like my kid will be working as part of the game day crew here. And I had already locked up a source for free tickets on a regular basis.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
Definitely patience. And the hope that DiceK kills it in a contract year. Bard and Doubrant just have to make it to July. Tito thrived on consistency, predictability, and alwways supporting/protecting players. It’s going to take an adjustment to a new lack of continuity. I hope it works.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Hard to get excited about player development with the new CBA. Theo and the rest of the Man Pageant will have to find new ways to get younger because overslotting and international scouting have gone the way of the Dodo.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Yeah, too bad they play to an always-empty stadium.
/ Yesterthread sarcasm
April 11th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Well no one will go back to school because they want overslot then. I think the effect will be MORE high school players signing, because the huge payday won’t be waiting anyway. I went into this with Fetch (I think) a few months ago. The trick will be in player evaluation.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Dan Lebatard talking about his dad leaving Cuba right now on The Herd. Interesting that his dad felt bad for Guillen.

Anyway, the Braves finally won, so I guess it’s not 1979 all over again.
/ Still yearns for the return of Biff Pocoroba
April 11th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
BaD Radio on the Ticket captured what happens with Knoxie so expertly. It may be the best comedy bit that happens during an actual game. Only thing that challenges it is the Post Game show with Charles, Kenny and Shaq.

Strasburg vs Johan today!!! Damnit. I have to work and miss it.
MASN. Bring it on, puppy dog.
