Mike & Mike’s Radio Show Called Bubba Watson 40 Times, So He Changed His Cell Phone Number [UPDATE]
Bubba Watson, the Master’s champ, went on Scott Van Pelt’s radio show this week and told a story about how a 6 am radio show relentlessly badgered him to go on the air Monday. Here’s how it went down:
Bubba went on to say that the last straw to motivate him to finally change his number came from a radio show that he wouldn’t name. After arriving home after 3 AM he said he received 40 calls at 6 AM from this radio show and that was enough to cause him to make the change.
Russillo joked that he hoped it wasn’t “Mike & Mike” and Bubba indicated that it was, but he didn’t want to “call you guys (ESPN) out”.
If you want to listen to the audio, go to the 20 minute mark here. What’s funny is that SVP’s partner Ryen Russillo seemed to be joking about calling out Mike & Mike, and then Watson laughs and just comes clean with the info. [Los Sports Blog]
[UPDATE: Van Pelt and Russillo went on the radio today and claim that Watson was clearly joking about the radio show being Mike & Mike. You can listen here and decide for yourself.]

good for bubba. no need to go on that dumbshit show.

I got on a shuttle from the lot to my building, Cowherd was on, and I got off at the next stop and walked.
/fuck ESPN radio
April 11th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
But seriously, calling someone uninvited, who doesn’t even know you have their number is just a bush league move.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Are Mike & Mike now your heroes?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Mike & Mike should have just run 40 audio clips of his outbound voicemail message or his sleepy answering and called it an exclusive get.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
TBL this is a geniune question — What is the difference between what Mike & Mike’s producers did with Bubba Watson compared to what you did to Bobby Knight?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
But did Bubba say Kentucky on the SVP show?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Seriously… if you ever get 40 missed calls early morning, there better be a drunk crying girl on your doorstep ready for some begging you to take her back sex.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
if these guys on Mike & Mike were any good, they’d know you always, ALWAYS, get the transcripts from those 40 calls.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
SHOTS FIRED!
April 11th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
We’re sure Bubba wasn’t joking?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Because this is a blog that talks about people that talk about sports. The discussion of what TBL did is better suited for a blog that talks about bloggers that talk about people that talk about sports.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
My thoughts exactly.

Professionals are held to a higher standard than amateurs.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Bubba didn’t even answer? He’s history’s greatest monster.
No measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society TBL brah.
This vindicates nothing.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
TBL’s a professional, no?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
TBL: So, Bubby…golf, eh? What’s that like?
Bubba: huh?
TBL: Can I see your penis? Professionally speaking, of course.

draw your own conclusions
April 11th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
40 seems like a big number, but when you add in some production assistant/show coordinator trying to get the big get, it’s plausible.
I’m attached to a roller coaster thing and early on, 7 years ago, received dozens of repeated calls from a couple of shows even though we weren’t talking to the media. Fast forward to last Fall, when the interest hit a surreal peak, and the attempts were significantly greater. With winning the Masters, I’m sure Bubba’s numbers were through the roof and M&M was just an easy target…or everyone doesn’t have access to his cell and he’s legit pissed.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
This has been getting some play on the current segment of the Dan Patrick Show.

April 11th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Bubba was on Mad Dog Radio on Sirius this morning, so he can’t be that exclusive.

Guys, its a golf post, you should be grateful.
Weeks building up to Masters – 1 post about Tiger relatives, and an EIC comment about how the site’s been around for 6 years and that commentors should know better than to expect golf/tennis coverage
Masters – a preview posted after the tournament begins
Weekend – carpet bomb of Masters posts
Monday – Obligatory “ratings are down” post
Tuesday – Cold Call Bubba Post
US Open is like 6 weeks away.

April 11th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I meant about it being Mike & Mike. Bubba tells the story about the 40 phone calls, Russillo, laughing, says, “Well on behalf of Mike & Mike I apologize.” Bubba responds, also laughing, “Right. I didn’t wanna call ya’ll out, but I just wanted to sleep.”
April 11th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Anyone else going? I will be there all four days and it will be a fucking blast.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
So…how’s everyone’s golf game? Anyone else have a lesson and an epiphany over the weekend? Then go out and nearly shoot a career round…err, back 9?

Shocking that you think because you’ve lived through cold calling it means you know more than someone who has called, has taken calling classes and media interview classes with friends and relatives, and has actually transcribed celebrities cold calls.

let’s hear the epiphany rich
April 11th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
i played a course i normally play at under some of the most extreme conditions ive ever played on sunday morning. 45-50 degrees, 20-30 mph winds, long rough and it’s been so dry here, when coupled with the wind, everything was running forever and the greens were crazy fast.
i can honestly say i played about as close to my potential as i could’ve, and yet still took 40 putts and shot 90. the guy i got paired up with had two well-struck 10 yard pitches roll at least 50 feet off the green. it was outrageous.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:53 AM

April 11th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
how did they get the number?
April 11th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Hips. The epiphany was in my hips. Back to the basics. Stay in the barrel and turn/rotate instead of rocking/swaying. Simple. Effective.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
+1 Soused and you are now my official spokesman. I’m forwarding all of this weekend’s phone calls to you. I already have a mental script of sarcastic responses, so you’ll be golden.

It was nothing really, just a missed BA. And to whoever made the school comment that is a good way to get yourself in a wreck.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Yikes. I can relate to some of that, well the wind anyway. West Texas is notorious for it, though it’s been calm around here lately. We have our first tournament coming up in two weeks and I expect it will be calm until then, then blow 30 mph with 50+ mph gusts.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
I had a hips epiphany over the summer with my swing. gave up on golf for years b/c i couldn’t get it. when i picked up a club again i made sure to rotate my hips with less action coming from the shoulders/arms and boom, no more slice.
April 11th, 2012 at 11:57 AM

April 11th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I too had a hips epiphany on the range a couple of weeks ago. I was rotating my hips through waaaaaaaay too early and as a result could not back to square (big fat block shots) no matter what I did. Watched a few videos, actually used some of the tips and got rid of it. Still haven’t been out to play 18, but the range stops are getting better each time.

Came out firing great on THUR w/ that 85 but slumped to a 96 on SAT with 1 bad shot per hole.
Last fall I read something on how pros actually generate force and torque by pressing their feet down during a swing, I realize I dont do that at all, so added that a bit and my scoring irons have really started to improve. My miss with them is swinging at the ball, instead of being a ballstriker. Pretty excited as I’ve blown many an opportunity by missing greens with scoring irons.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
And that’s getting to be a pretty long list
April 11th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
you probably could’ve handled the conditions on sunday…youre prolly used to baked dry courses with tons of wind. usually it tends to be softer when it’s windy up here.
really didn’t care about the putting thing…i hit good putts on the right line, just couldn’t get anything to fall. probably had a half dozen 10 footers that either hit the cup or were under six inches from going in. still april and all that…if i had my normal shortgame from this year with how well i struck it, id have had a great round. i bet a pga pro wouldve struggled to break par in those conditions.

April 11th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
check out trevino’s squat.
tiger gets criticized for his “dip” but his problem is when he springs up, not with the dip itself. as long as you stay down thru impact, squatting during the downswing is a great way to create leverage.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
I had a classic golf moment. Par 10-14, then mash a drive on the par-5 15th (the hardest and longest hold on the course). Never been on in two but I’m 260 out and think I can mash a 3-wood on. I mashed it all right. Overcooked and OB. Made double bogey. Miss a 10 ft. birdie putt on 16. Make a 10 foot birdie putt on 17. Par 18 for a 37. Should’ve been a 35 if only my non-existent caddy would have thrown that 3-wood in a tree.

Hogan had an extra spike added to the ball of his right shoe because he used the ground so much for leverage.

So, the rumors are true?
April 11th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Long. Most of the tees were pretty far back. And I live in the northeast so this was my first round in the Bermuda grass since last summer. Took a little while to adjust.

This true for golf, and for women as well, which is why I really can’t build up steam for Upton.

Whenever my swing feels out of sorts, someone inevitably tells me I’m getting up on my toes when I downswing. It’s a bad habit from when I started out and stood too close to the ball. I don’t even notice I’m doing it. “Pressing down,” as you put it here, always straightens it out.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Mike & Mike is terrible.
That said, I’m surprised Bubba Watson got any sleep that night. I thought winning the Masters was akin to the Super Bowl and you just keep going and going on excitement until you burn out.
Hell, I didn’t win the Super Bowl in 2009 with the Saints and I was up that night and the day after before I fell asleep.

Seriously, does anybody listen to/watch Mike and Mike? They must have some kind of devoted fan base but i’ll be damned if i know one of them. The next time either one of them says something interesting will be the first. The other day Fat Mike was screaming about how dumb fans are who riot after their team wins a title. Way to be controversial!!
April 11th, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Seriously, does anybody listen to/watch Mike and Mike?
Not really. The entire show is based off a business model to introduce topics for EPSN and be non-controversial at all, to appease a wide audience and not threaten any corporate partners or demographics. They are only endured as they have the ESPN morning stronghold.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
