Cody Zeller and Christian Watford are Returning to Indiana, and the Hoosiers Are No. 1
Indiana was No. 1 in our super-duper early Top 25 for the 2012-2013 college basketball season, and now that its top two players – junior Christian Watford and freshman Cody Zeller – have decided to return next season, the Hoosiers remain the team to beat. You’ll see plenty of love for Louisville elsewhere – understandable, as the Cardinals return three starters and have a solid 7-man rotation – and perhaps even Kentucky if the Wildcats are able to lock down a top recruit or two in the next 48 hours.
While I don’t see the Hoosiers being nearly as dominant as the 2011 Kentucky Wildcats, I do think Indiana (and Louisville) will clearly have the most talent – despite not having any future NBA Hall of Famers – in the country. After recruits make decisions and transfers pick a school, we may be able to toss Kentucky and UNC into that discussion.
Zeller’s decision also mucks up the Top 10 of the NBA draft. He was a Top 10 lock. I suppose this helps other forward like Jared Sullinger or Perry Jones, but I think Zeller is already much more polished than these guys. So is Zeller costing himself money?
I don’t think so. His brother, Tyler Zeller, could have left UNC early and been a first round pick but he stuck around … and will still be a first round pick. Yes, players who pass on the NBA often find their game picked apart – see Jones, Sullinger and Harrison Barnes. Unlike that trio, Zeller doesn’t take the most shots on the team, and Indiana has a balanced attack so there’s little pressure on him to dominate. But yes, if he has a 4-point, 3-rebound game (as he did against Michigan State) or a 7-point, 3-rebound game (as he did against Wisconsin), everyone’s going to wonder if he’s costing himself money with rough nights.
The other reason I don’t think Zeller will fall out of the Top 10 next year is that it isn’t nearly as strong of a draft. There are a couple potentially-elite high school studs (Muhammad, Noel), a couple 7-footers (Len, Adams), and North Carolina’s James Michael McAddo. Barring injury, it’s tough to see Cody Zeller falling out of the Top 5 next year.

My co-worker is an Indiana grad and is thrilled by this. Good for Indiana to have some excitement going into next season.

Lamb is gone from UCONN as well but reports in the Hartford Courant is that Drummond is torn about leaving. Could depend on finances and Calhoun.

B1G is going to be loaded. Like the Knicks were 3 weeks ago.

Tom Creen is the worst.

Zeller could be a stronger player next year for a contender and make himself into a Top 5 pick whereas right now he’s looking, at best, at middle of the lotto.
Big men are always at a premium. Unless he hurts himself, he’ll still be highly coveted.

This is AWESOME news for Hoosier fans. It will make sitting through another shitty Colts season a little bit better.
/Did buy season tickets this year though.

If I was judging college bball teams based solely on pictures included in TBL posts I’d think IU was an inter-mural squad.
April 10th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Since you linked the post, I feel like this needs to be reposted:
20. Ohio State (31-8, Final 4) – Losing Sullinger and Buford will hurt, but if Deshaun Thomas leaves for the NBA, they’re not nearly this high……………………….This is under the assumption Thomas leaves for the NBA. If he stays, they Buckeyes are Top 10.

Goodman is right. If Indiana (who can’t do shit away from Assembly Hall 2.0) is #1, cbb is going to suck even more than usual next year.

I think this is more of an indictment on how weak college basketball will be next year as opposed to how strong IU will be. Outside of Zeller and perhaps Watford, I don’t think their roster is that impressive. But even as Kentucky fan, I think it’s great that IU is once again relevant. It’s good for college basketball when the historically great programs are competitive.
/Just not UCLA
//At least not next year
///That’s because I want Shabazz at UK

Reasons IU is already over-rated for 2012-13:
1. Not sold on Crean as a game coach
2. IU struggled on defense all year this year, and many of the same cast of characters will be back
3. Combining all 5 starters back with a GREAT recruiting class has potential chemistry disaster written all over it.
4. Big 10 will be a meat grinder… again.
5. No coach with a Napoleon complex AND a butt cut have had a #1 team.
April 10th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
I guess the international game is still dead in 2013 as well.
April 10th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Goddamn, do we need any more college bball crap in April? Let’s put this shit on pause until October at least.

Deshaun Thomas is coming back so they shoul dbe nearly as high but if Deshuan Thomas didnt come back they wouldnt be as high, we assumed that Thomas would leave but our assumption was wrong and now he’s back do it should be higher — but its not as high because Thomas came back. Needless to say that since Thoams is coming back OSU will be higher but we have to assume that he doesnt come back so it will be lower unless he stays and it will be higher.

One thing I am sure of — with TCU welcoming Trent Johnson as coach, the Big 12 will be welcoming a new basebment dweller in 2013.

This.

C’mon, we all know Michigan is winning the BIG.

Well, you can’t be No. 1 if you’re getting your ass ripped all the time.
April 10th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Pissing into the wind, dude. Next mock draft will probably be released sometime this week as more announcements come out.
This blog will always be hoop-centric.

Insure those knees. With the majority of his demographic finding employment with the military, target, wal-mart and best buy (for now) I would stress the importance of making millions of dollars for past achievements as soon as possible.

April 10th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Mix in a little Euro 2012 conjecturing. At least something that we can focus on in the next 2-3 months.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Too bad. Zeller was the closest thing we had to a Euro in the mock drafts.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
IU can do some serious damage in the regular season next year. But unless they play defense they won’t do much in the NCAA tourney.

OT: pregame festivities for the Dodgers’ home opener. Lasorda is so fat…(how fat is he?)…he had to take the field in a sweater. Couldn’t they find a jersey big enough for him?
Also, Vin Scully is under the weather today. Only the second home opener he’s ever missed.

Yup. Who could have predicted Gauthier would go full retard.

Zeller has nowhere to go but up, he was never leaving.
Also, what The Gilly said

Goodman is reporting Mason Plumlee is returning to Duke, contrary to every TBL post from the last month where he failed to differentiate between hiring an agent and declaring for the draft or just testing the waters.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Wasn’t this already done by you failing to include any foreign players?
April 10th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
What was the bet? I don’t even remember.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Also, Predators are winning the Cup for my money.
Nucks, Blues, Hawks, Preds. Rangers, Caps, Pens, Devils.
Hawks, Preds. Rangers, Pens.
Preds. Pens.
Preds.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Caps over the Bruins?
April 10th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Adams is playing his senior year ball in the states but he is from New Zealand. Watch out for Pitt if Trey Zeigler gets the waiver to play right away. His addition plus Adams would be huge.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
‘splain?
April 10th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
…as long as that mock draft ignores international players.
April 10th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
No words needed
Basically a UK fan intimating that IU wasn’t that good this year and won’t be next year is sad considering IU beat them and gave them the best run in the tournament. Is a roster full of future first round picks? No. Is it a complete team that will be a favorite to cut down the nets next year? Yes. I’m sure that concept is hard for UK fans to understand.
April 10th, 2012 at 6:09 PM
Did you stop watching after the loss? Louisville and Kansas both finished closer than the Hoosiers.
April 10th, 2012 at 6:15 PM
I’ll give you Louisville due to their defense, Kansas was never in that game
April 10th, 2012 at 6:21 PM
Kentucky went 35-37 from the free throw line….. let me repeat that stat. Kentucky went 35-37 from the free throw line.
Indiana shot 55% and lost by 12. Kentucky played their best game of the year against IU the second time.
April 10th, 2012 at 6:22 PM
That too, I just don’t bother with stats for trolls
April 10th, 2012 at 6:23 PM
Someone didnt really watch Indiana this year. Keep up the comedy, though, JMac
