I work at an affiliate TV station and if anything, the higher ups keep pushing for shorter packages and stories in order to “maintain pacing” and shit like that. Yeah, I want you to tell a compelling news story in 90 seconds, INCLUDING the intro and outro. GTFO. That’s why TV news is in a bad way. We fucking cater to the lowest common denominator and make everything super short and dumbed down. News NEEDS more 2 and a half or 3 minute pieces and not just at sweeps time.

Well said, great macro level stories are very difficult to produce. They find the stories that give you both sides and then try to boil down the essence of the issue.

CBS cutting into that budget has impacted 60 minutes a bit, not unlike all the other major news telecasts.

This is not to say Wallace wasn’t accomplished in his own right or a world-class interviewer. Just because American Idol and The Voice have pushed 60 minutes out of the weekly top 10 in ratings doesnt mean it’s not part of the current media gold standard. That’s the top of the heap for investigative reporting.
