Yardwork: The Mets Remain Undefeated; Yankees and Red Sox Remain Winless
With each opening series of the 2012 baseball season complete, it’s safe to say we’re living in opposite land. Up is down, black is white, good is bad, day is night, and living with your parents is hot. For just the second time in MLB history, both the Red Sox and Yankees have started the season 0-3. The only other time this has happened was in 1966, when New York finished last and Boston came in second-to-last. The good news, Yankee fans? In 1998, the Bombers began the season 0-3 and went on to win 114 games and the World Series.
As for those blistering Mets? They started the season 3-0 in 2007 and went on to choke away the division to the Phillies; again. The lesson here is obviously to breathe, people, breathe.
Rays 3, Yankees 0 — Jeremy Hellickson allowed three hits in 8.2 innings. Only A-Rod, Tex and Swisher managed to get hits off the 25-year-old, which will obviously lead to articles highlighting just how old and creaky the Yankees lineup has become. It’s really simple though, the Rays have an excellent team, and everyone is well aware of that fact.
Tigers 13, Red Sox 12 — Boston was on its way to win No. 1 until Alfredo Aceves attempted to notch a save, instead serving up a three-run shot to Miguel Cabrera. This has been a fun project. His final line? 3 H, 3 ER, and an ERA of infinity. To make matters worse, Clay Buchholz was atrocious, giving up seven earned runs in four innings. To be fair, the Tiger bats are going to do this to a lot of pitchers.
Mets 7, Braves 5 — Everyone is missing the big story here: Frank Frank notched his third save in as many games, and pitched his second perfect inning of the season. Not sure how long such a fluke can last, but perhaps I’ve underestimated the notoriously uneasy, unreliable closer. In all honesty though, this is nice to see for a club that’s trudged through more shit than Andy Dufresne over the last handful of seasons.
Cubs 4, Nationals 3 — This line has to be pleasing for Cubs fans to see next to the name Jeff Samardzija: 8.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K. Again, this is Jeff Samardzija. Hope is alive and well in just about every locker room where it was presumed to already be dead.
D-Backs 7, Giants 6 — The Giants, along with the Braves, Red Sox, Twins, and Yankees, are also winless at 0-3. And they managed to get there in brutal fashion, inexcusably blowing a six-run lead. Arizona got two in the fourth, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh, thanks in part to the immortal Lyyle Overbay, who smacked a two-run double and solo home run.
Reds 6, Marlins 5 — So who earned the Robert DeNiro “you bleeeeeeeeeew it”? Could have been Aceves, but it’s going to Heath Bell, frankly because more is expected of him than such a paltry line of 0.1 IP, 4 H, and 2 ER.
Pirates 5, Phillies 4 — The coolest story of the weekend has to be the Pittsburgh Pirates and their two walkoff wins over the Phillies. Yesterday it was Andrew McCutchen’s walkoff single with two outs in the ninth that sent PNC Park into hysterics. The Pirates are 2-1, the Phillies are 1-2, and nobody has any clue what the hell is going on. Hell, even the Orioles are 3-0. Yes, the Orioles.
Rangers 5, White Sox 0 — Josh Hamilton’s mammoth home run is worth a look, unfortunately the vid isn’t embeddable, so take a look on MLB.com. Both he and Adrian Beltre were 2-for-4 with a home run. Hamilton is off to a great start. Matt Harrison went six scoreless and allowed just four hits. The best part about the game? Bobby Valentine was on a plane rather than in the Sunday Night Baseball booth. We were all winners in that game.

Great opener for the Tigers. High expectations and a long season, so I’m not going to go all crazy. Enjoy each victory and move to the next game.

the o’s sweep and jason hammel takes a no-no into the 8th yesterday yet we don’t get a Wire clip? we truly are in opposite land.
shame on you, hernia.

It should be a fun season in Boston with Bobby Valentool at the helm. He’s provided enough hilarity already this season to cover himself through May.
April 9th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Bruce Bochy looks (even more) horribly incompetent managing against Gibson.

NL East is going to be a really interesting story this year.

Beyond atrocious. I went back and looked at his start last night before I went to bed. Motherfucker wouldn’t know the bottom half of the strike zone if it walked up to him with a nametag on. Kid really needs to work on challenging inside because he is way off the plate when coming in to right handed batters’ kitchens.
That Sawks bullpen is going to be taxed big time if their starters don’t figure it out in a hurry. A bullpen that has absolutely no identity right now. Kinda like the Cubs. Not a team you want to be associated with in 2012.

I picked a bad weekend to buy a 3 game series worth of tickets

Someone had to get screwed with so much to talk about. It felt fair to bone over Baltimore.

Phillies are not going to be good this year. Hitting Juan Pierre lead off? That should be a fireable offense and Pierre should be in AAA or the Independent League, not the majors.

Was at the Cubs game yesterday and Shark really was outstanding. Very economical with his pitches as he had just 83 after 8 innings of work. That’s why Nuts sent him back out for the 9th. I thought he left him in a little long for the 9th but after the disastrous outings from Wood and Marmol the prior two games I can see why he did. Nuts even made the mound visit himself before Shark served up the 2 run homer to LaRoche.
Starlin Castro’s error is the reason that game went further than it had to. If he makes that throw, the Cubs win 4-1 and Shark’s line looks even better.

This was the most impressive bomb of the weekend. Friday night, Yoenis Cespedes was charged with 1st degree murder of a baseball. Just an absolute moonshot. 461 feet.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
SC I honestly have no idea who your baseball team is. Yankees Red Sox or Cubs?
April 9th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
everyone calm down… pitching is ALWAYS ahead of hitting and three games don’t define your season.
case in point: the Orioles started 6-0 last year.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Feldman, Ogando, or Harrison for Ellsbury. Red Sox should jump on that. We need a proper center fielder in Arlington.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
It’s fun that nearly everything is upside down though.

Gotta say that the O’s fanbase has got to be one of the nicest. I walked around all weekend in my Twins gear and most of the time it was just friendly talk. After Jones hit a HR on Saturday, some guy bought us a beer.

The Giants rotation disagrees.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
There was a game that featured 25 runs scored yesterday. It seems like there’s been a lot of bullpens that have blown leads early on too. The aces are generally coming through with flying colors so far though.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
That was awesome. Not sure how long Overbays was yesterday but that was crushed. Sandoval and Posey also crushed a couple. Chase Field turns into coors field with the roof open.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
D’Backs really jumped on all of them early. After the first inning, Lincecum settled in nicely. Bumgarner took two innings to get it going. Cain was the opposite though. Strong start and then fell apart in the middle innings.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Royals 7 Angels 3 – Fat Albert was held to just two hits in the series as Eric Hosmer and the Kansas City Royals moved to 2-1 on the young season. Jonathan Sanchez walked the high wire and scared the living fuck out of most Royals fans, but was bailed out repeatedly by the horrendous Vernon Wells.
You missed one.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Jay Bruce’s bomb on Thursday also needs to be included in this list. As does Pedro Alvarez’s from yesterday.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
definitely the most surprising of all those performances. Arizona has really figured out Lincecum but when Cain was spotted a 6 run lead I thought for sure he would go 7 or 8 innings with minimal runs given up.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Cubs, my fantasy team and baseball in general are my loves. I, like the rest of America, hope that Boston goes 0-162 every year though.

No, it is not time to breathe. For Mets fans it is a time to celebrate and start every sentence that has to do with baseball with “If the season ended today.” Breath, it only means prolonging life which for Mets fans eventually leads to a horrible death.
April 9th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
If this happens again this season, Yanks and Bosox games will still be featured on ESPN and Fox constantly.

they do know the game and this is typical feedback for the camden yard experience for everyone outside of boston and ny fans.

Just think…you’ll get to live through this again in another 5 years when Theo is done with the Cubs.
Theo has managed to get away essentially scot-free of those putrid/mind-numbing/insane contracts he signed here. They seem to get lost in the shuffle between the ego-manaical manager, the puppet of a GM, and a front office which has no idea how to actually connect with its fanbase because they are too busy trying to maintain a “perfect” PR appearance.
April 9th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
The Meth-backs have a really solid lineup. Actually thought the Giants, despite getting swept, should of been relatively happy with how the series turned out: all one-run losses, and the offense mostly produced. Granted, it was at Gimmick FIeld, but whatevs.
April 9th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
Measured reaction on the internet? No way…
Between Padilla and Aceves, they can withstand short outings from starters better than most. I’d have preferred Bard relieving and one of those two as a starter, but at this point, you’ve made your bed. Like I said last night, I doubt Ace is going to end the season with an ERA of infinity.
Pedro gave up 9 runs against Toronto (I think) one year in the opener one year then went on to win the Cy Young. Let’s settle down. Buch said he felt good, and at this point, if he’s healthy and feels good he’ll be fine, since he has
April 9th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Too true. It just feels like a circus. They blew a big chance to hit the reset button on their organizational philosophy. They might make the playoffs, but they just seem to be intent on creating questions (Bard, Aceves, SS) than on finding simple solutions to them.

Tigers won a pitchers duel 3-2, then a blowout 10-0 and finally a close offensive game 13-12 with lots of clutch hitting. Only concerns are that Fister is hurt and Scherzer got shelled.
It is going to be a fun summer.
