Gregg Williams Probably Will Never Work Again in the NFL Now That This Audio Tape Has Been Revealed
Mike Silver of Yahoo broke some seismic NFL news this morning:
The night before Gregg Williams’ final game as the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator, the since-suspended coach gave a fiery speech to the team’s defensive players during which he made specific references to inflicting physical punishment upon several San Francisco 49ers in a postseason game the next day.
And now take three minutes and listen to the audio below and tell me how Gregg Williams will ever work in the NFL again. Yes, bounties have existed in the NFL forever. But if the NFL needed a smoking gun to drop the hammer on Williams, this is it.
The Saints lost this game in question, 36-32. And the Donte Whitner of the 49ers delivered the hardest hit of the afternoon.

Sounds like every football speech I have ever heard. I was hoping he told them to cheap shot players.
/football is a violent game.

It didnt start off that bad but after the first minute he sounds like a straight pyscho.

Exactly! That’s my heartburn with this whole issue. Yeah, it’s bad for the health of the game, but Williams isn’t the only one spouting this rhetoric. This same stuff is probably being said in other locker rooms across the league.
If the National Football League is serious about this issue, to me it stands to reason that the investigation ought to go wider than NOLA.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Oh I don’t know. Curtis Enis has a pretty sweet job serving nachos at Soldier Field.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
IIRC, the 49ers were the ones really laying the wood that game. Makes you wonder what Vic Fangio’s postgame speech was…
Either way, this is pretty damning stuff for Gregg. Not that I thought it would before, but no way in the world does Patyon’s suspension get reduced now.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:21 AM
the most interesting thing to come out of this one will be all teams banning recording devices from pregame speeches.
i doubt there was one team that told players to “pull up and not hit the other guys so hard, be gentle, and remember the golden rule”.
except maybe Tony Dungy.

One statement doesn’t invalidate the other. It sounds like about every football speech I heard in high school and our coaches were straight pyscos. Well, actually they were psychos, but I think both points are valid.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
What an ineffective speech…maybe he should have sprinkled in some strategy.
“What the fuck is an outside ACL?”
“Don’t stop him he’s on a roll”
April 5th, 2012 at 9:30 AM
Wow. Glad the niners won that game.

only two things i find wrong with this tape:
1) whoever released it
2) telling players to go after ACLs
low hits are dirty and serve no other purpose then to injure. at least head shots are intimidating on some level.
and regardless of how this thing is blown up in the media, that nazi goodell will take some excessive action.

The ACL comment was the only out of line statement he made. The rest is just football. Your job in football is to physically beat your opponent, PERIOD. Nothing else like it and that is why it is king.

Can’t listen, but he told guys to go after ACLs? That’s fucked up
April 5th, 2012 at 9:43 AM
i’ve heard he catches stray kittens and beats them to death after verbally sparring with Rodney Harrison on Sunday nights.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
I don’t disagree, but I’d love to see Williams take a snap or go across the middle with those tenets in place.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
LCD shit for an LCD sport. When you don’t give a shit about the well being of your employees, you’ll get speeches like this.

My junior year in high school. It is halftime and we are in the locker room and the other team has a player who is lights out shooting threes. Our coach is going to start the second half with like the ninth guy off the bench. He can tell we are all confused about this. Especially the guy that is being replaced. Our coach (who was also the football coach)says, “Fuck it. (Name Redacted) is going to put his elbow on #32′s nose the first time he shoots a three in the second half. The second half starts and (Name Redacted) does his job and surprising didn’t get ejected although it wouldn’t have mattered as he was back to the bench and our coach feigned anger. #32 didn’t make another three the entire game.
Coaches are fucking evil. This is not breaking news.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Lots of metaphors in there, but he directly said go for Alex Smith’s head, Frank Gore’s head, Fumble Williams’ head, Michael Crabtree’s knees, and Vernon Davis’ ankles. I don’t know how this is considered “like any other pre-game speech” or just another way to fire up players for “PHYSICAL GAME!”
April 5th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
If there was audio, it would be breaking news. That coach would be fired.
April 5th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
If the fucking Saints were better at their jobs…..
April 5th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
The filmmaker who recorded this had access to the Saints for many parts of the season. Possibly jumping to conclusions here, but you’d think Williams would stymie the hubris, but apparently he had a “fuck you clause” in his contract.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
I refuse to believe that in all the NFL Films footage of pregame coach’s speeches there’s not another instance of a coach calling out opposing players to be targeted.
Not excusing what the Saints did, but I cannot honestly believe that they are alone and that the league and media didn’t know about it already.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Interesting listening to this and then remembering that Pierre Thomas got knocked out cold in that game, fumbled and cost the Saints a possible TD.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Setting aside the objectives that Williams wants carried out, perhaps the most offensive part of all of this is Williams’ arrogance. This was before the San Francisco divisional playoff game; wasn’t he aware that there was an ongoing investigation going back two years into these exact sets of circumstances?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Isn’t he just pointing out where players had previous injuries and that it’d be wise to target that location? Broadcasters say that shit all the time.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Well did you win the game?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I know every time Cris Collinsworth broadcasts a Sunday night game, he wisely suggests going for headshots of a player who had a concussion in the previous game.

April 5th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Oddly, what got Sandusky in trouble was asking young football players to “touch the head” and to “go for the head.”
April 5th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
I agree. I’ve never heard a pre-game speech, let alone a day before game speech, with a coach telling the defense to intentionally injure a player from the other team. You talk about how you need to stop them, but not intentionally take out someone’s knees. No way GW coaches again. Imagine him saying this shit to a 6th grade football team?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Arrogant or just dumb as fuck he has to know they are recording.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:08 AM

He ended up getting the boot for a lot of similar type things. Nobody cared until parents started complaining.
Well did you win the game?
Fuck, yeah. He was the best coach I ever had. We lost two games that year. Unfortunately, the second loss was sub-state semifinals of all the fucking times to lose.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
No.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:12 AM
Coaches and players are well aware of a player’s injury history. They are usually discussed in position meetings fergodsake. Why does a guy with a sprained ankle will usually tape and spat both ankles?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Alex Smith’s concussions
Frank Gore’s concussions
Kyle Williams’ concussions Note the Giants are also targeting him for the concussion issue.
Alex Davis’ ankles
Michael Crabtree’s ACL, etc.

April 5th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Two things that I stopped to consider:
1. Who the hell records their pregame speeches? Particularly ones where you’re going to be indicating who you want targetted and where?
2. If you think Bellichick or Cowher or Rex Ryan have never given a speech of a similar nature, you’re nuts.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Agreed.
April 5th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
I was on my way into work so I missed this crack research…but concussions from 2-3 seasons prior? Sprained ankles from previous seasons?
The best one is a fractured foot from college that you list as a previous ACL injury. Top notch.
April 5th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
On concussions, you get 1, you’re more susceptible to getting another. On Crabtree, from the link:
It’s not like the Saints got shit mixed up, they knew where the injuries had occurred.
April 5th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
I’m with you on that. Have listen to many of pre-game speeches the past 18 years and have never heard any coach tell players to intentionally injure players. It was hard to listen to. Some might tell me to quit being a pussy but I’d like to think there should be some honor in how the game should be played….even at the highest level of the sport.
April 5th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
i can’t understand that there are still some of you referring to the fact that this goes one everywhere. that doesn’t matter. when the others leave a paper trail and have pregame speeches recorded and there is 50000 pages of evidence, then they’ll get penalized too. a guy robs a bank, but but but so do a lot of other folks, so……probation for the guy caught?
April 5th, 2012 at 6:51 PM
Gregg is a complete asshole. Always has been. This is no surprise.
