2012 MLB Preview: AL East
The 2012 Major League Baseball season begins again this afternoon, marking the third Opening Day of the young season. There will be seven games taking place today. Tomorrow, some more teams will play baseball. The same thing will happen Friday. Eventually, all teams will have played a regular season baseball game.
Yes, Bird Selig has a beautiful mind.
Over the last week or so, we’ve previewed five of the six divisions. Today, we finish with the mothership. The best division in baseball.
Boston Red Sox
2011 Record — 90-72, 3rd place
Notable Additions — Bobby Valentine, who apparently slept in Kramer’s tanning bed for the entire offseason. Even George Hamilton is impressed, and that’s no easy feat. The great Curt Schilling and his flappy neck-fat have already spent some time throwing Bobby V under a speeding hearse. The fact that nearly everyone scurried to the side of a guy like Valentine certainly assists in illustrating just how big of an asshole Curt chilling is.
Tragic Losses — Theo Epstein, Jason Varitek, Jonathan Papelbon, and Marco Scutaro.
Good News — Gone with Theo Epstein’s departure is the strict Dockers pants/Dockers shorts dress code. Even better, the addition of Bobby V’s Kermit voice offers the necessary dose of comic relief for the otherwise stressful experience that is being a Red Sox fan.
Bad News — The second anything goes wrong, the Red Sox will be peppered with questions about last year’s epic meltdown finish, one that was fittingly capped by a hilarious Orioles walkoff win. Terry Francona was so good with the media that I wouldn’t be as worried if he were still in charge. Bobby V is a bit more brash and outwardly arrogant, so the way he handles the suffocating media in a tough spot will be fascinating to watch.
Outlook — This a very good team that played extremely well last year for four months. People seem to be conveniently forgetting that. They still ended up with 90 wins after all the garbage that went on, and most of these guys have been around long enough to be able to put that stuff in the rear-view mirror. So I have them finishing first with 96 wins.
Probable 2012 Anthem — The Muppets theme song to warmly welcome their new manager.
New York Yankees
2011 Record — 97-65, 1st place
Notable Additions — Michael Pineda, who’s already penciled in to be on the DL for the next six years. I know how these stories end. It’ll be a slow drip to some form of surgery and a world of disappointment. They also had the nerve to dig up Raul Ibanez’s casket and place his corpse in the No. 8 spot.
Tragic Losses — A.J. Burnett. That one’s going to sting until the end of time. Here’s A.J. bunting as a proud member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Good News — Lots and lots of starting pitching: CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia, Phil Hughes, and living legend Andy Pettitte. It’s always rough when a team is one injury away from being forced to put someone like Jorge DePaula in the rotation, so the pitching depth is comforting.
Bad News — At this point, Derek Jeter and A-Rod are beginning to remind me of when Charles Barkley played for the Rockets alongside a 96-year-old Clyde Drexler and a physically retired Hakeem Olajuwon. It’s wonderful on paper and reliably profitable, but they are far from the players they used to be. I just hope Jeter’s stubbornness doesn’t win out to the point he ends up embarrassing himself.
Outlook — They’ll be right there with Boston. I have them at 94 wins and 2nd place.
Probable 2012 Anthem — The Degeneration X theme song. This is the era of a looser Yankee clubhouse, and they have Nick Swisher to thank for that.
Tampa Bay Rays
2011 Record — 91-71, 2nd place
Notable Additions — The return of Carlos Pena to go along with Luke Scott, Fernando Rodney, Jose Molina, and Jeff Keppinger. Those additions are severely lacking in the sizzle department.
Tragic Losses — Johnny Damon, Casey Kotchman, Kelly Shoppach, and Juan Cruz. Aside from Damon (kinda), those are all understandable pink slips.
Good News — Two words: Desmond Jennings. He’s going to have a monster year. I will be watching the Rays as much as I can solely due to his presence.
Bad News — B.J. Upton and Sam Fuld will start the year on the DL, so Matt Joyce will be in center, the awesome Jennings will be in left, and Ben Zobrist will stand in right field. Keppinger will roam the area around 2nd base until Zobrist moves back. Even worse, they still play at Tropicana Field.
Outlook — If they win the division, I won’t be the least bit surprised. However, I have them in 3rd place with 90 wins.
Probable 2012 Anthem — The Golden Girls theme song. As if there was ever any doubt.
Toronto Blue Jays
2011 Record — 81-81, 4th place
Notable Additions — Sergio Santos, Francisco Cordero, Darren Oliver, Jason Frasor, and Jeff Mathis. Riveting.
Tragic Losses — Frank Frank! Also, Jon Rauch and Jose Molina.
Good News — Hmm. They finished .500 last season? The Blue Jays are colossally screwed until they miraculously find their record residing in a different division. It’s not a fair situation for them, especially since they play in Toronto (not exactly enticing), but I don’t make the rules, I just make fun of them.
Bad News — The Yankees, the Red Sox and those talent scout maestros in Tampa.
Outlook — How about 83 wins and 4th place since the seat’s already warm?
Probable 2012 Anthem — The opening ballad to the DuckTales video game.
Baltimore Orioles
2011 Record — 69-93 and last place for the fourth year in a row. Well done, boys. Feverish applause!
Notable Additions — Former Red Sox GM Dan Duquette. His out of touch approach is oh so perfect. Wei-Ying Chen and Tsuyoshi Wada were added to the pitching staff, with Wada on the DL to open the season. Also, Jason Hammel, Wilson Betemit, and Luis Ayala, otherwise known as game-changers.
Tragic Losses — Jeremy Guthrie, Vlad Guerrero, Luke Scott, Felix Pie, Jo-Jo Reyes. No real damage there.
Good News — Hmm. Adam Jones is fast? Matt Wieters has a high ceiling? Sadly, right now he’s at about knee level. Also, Brian Roberts is still on the team. Which brings me to…
Bad News — Brian Roberts is on the DL. Also, they are the Baltimore Orioles who are still owned by Peter Angelos. Even the good things are shitty.
Outlook — It obviously goes without saying, but uh, this is a really tough division. It’s going to be last place for the fifth straight year with 68 wins, which is exactly two wins away from improvement. Makes sense to me.
Probable 2012 Anthem — The clubhouse stereo is still broken. Unfortunate.

The best division in baseball.
2011 Record — 90-72, 1st place
2011 Record — 97-65, 1st place
it even has two 1st place teams!
April 5th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Matt Wieters has a high ceiling? Sadly, right now he’s at about knee level.
really? can’t agree here. what current catchers would you prefer to have on your team?
April 5th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
So I guess the Israeli baseball league didn’t work out?
April 5th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Carlos Santana
Oh and +1 for the use of the Ducktales NES theme song
April 5th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
at least we now know why it was so easy for the Yankees to get him.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
You could spin this and take it positively as just “the ceiling is really, really high.”
April 5th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Carlos Santana
numbers aren’t as good as wieters.

April 5th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Santana had more HR, walks, higher OBP & SLG. Just had a really bad BABIP last year. He’s also younger.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Verlander. Location. So good.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
You could spin this and take it positively as just “the ceiling is really, really high.”
agreed. not sure the expectations were realistic from the start.
as one of the last loyal and hopeful orioles’ fans, i will not let wieters be insulted without a fight!
April 5th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Santana had more HR, walks, higher OBP & SLG. Just had a really bad BABIP last year. He’s also younger.
he also had 100 more PAs, and they’re both 25. not to mention he’s not as good defensively.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
actually, santana is older than wieters. and that’s before you account for his DR birth certificate.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I’m sorry, but seriously fuck the Red Sox, in particular Youk and Pedroia.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
It’s a wash, both will be very good and go back and forth for best catcher in the league.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
I have no dog in this fight but I would take Santana, Posey and probably Yadier Molina over Wieters. Molina has such a defensive presence.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Are you fucking kidding? There’s a couple who might, at this point, be slightly better with the bat, but even with that, Switch-Hitting Jesus is getting better every season.
And there’s not a better defensive catcher in baseball.
I will not stand for people bashing my favorite player, I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT!
April 5th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
…or until some of the pitching talent they have in the system is MLB-ready.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Bird Selig will never not make me laugh.
also, I need some pants like Rickie Fowler is wearing.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
The best division in baseball
OK, let’s see…
I just hope Jeter’s stubbornness doesn’t win out to the point he ends up embarrassing himself.
So you’re saying he should lock Minka down before he ends up looking like Bobby V?
BTW, would it be wrong of me to think the Rays and the Jays could leapfrog the vaunted East Coast Goliaths and take over this division this year? I’ll hang up and listen.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
New York and Boston have better hitting, Tampa has better pitching. I think all three are in it for the long haul and whichever team finishes third will be in a dogfight with whichever team finishes second in the West for the final WC spot.
Tiger -2 through 10, on the green in 2 at 11. Stenson still at -6, through 12.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
fuck that. Yadi Molina wouldn’t even let Wieters smell one of his farts behind the plate.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
I could see the Rays doing it this year. Jays need at least one more year. Red Sox should stay very good for a few more years. Yankees are on much shakier ground with the ancient roster.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
amen.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Just out of curiosity, did all of your projected win totals result in a .500 league or is it more of an estimation?
April 5th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Look at just about every defensive metric there is, and last year Wieters surpassed Molina in almost all of them.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I said the Rays can easily win the division. Would not be surprised at all. But the Blue Jays don’t have enough yet.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Plus, watching Wieters every night, the guy is outrageous behind the plate. Nothing gets by him, and he has a cannon. And he’s huge, I have yet to see anybody successfully score when he’s blocking the plate and the throw is close to on target.
God dammit, we’re such a shitty organization, I’m going to be pissed when he leaves in a couple years.
April 5th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
I’m looking forward to seeing how the Jays come together this year. Could be a fun year for them, however it turns out.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I said the Rays can easily win the division. Would not be surprised at all. But the Blue Jays don’t have enough yet.
So you think the Jays could instead be playing the role of spoiler this season by taking games/series away from the Yanks/Sox/Rays?
I’m not so sure the Jays can’t compete. The Sox have Bobby V and who knows how that’ll work. The Yanks are ancient and will likely cull their farm system to get enough for Seattle to part with King Felix. So I don’t see why they can’t.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
They can definitely compete. Just don’t see them winning 90-plus.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Exactly this. They’ll be spoilers, their offense is going to be really good, but they don’t have the arms yet.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Jays can compete but absolutely everything has to go right for them. Alvarez has to be a legit #3 and Drabek and/or McGowan need to be reliable starters at back end of rotation. Lind needs to not completely suck and Rasmus needs to play like it’s 2010. I like the bullpen and I think Lawrie is going tear shit up if he doesn’t kill himself.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
They can definitely compete. Just don’t see them winning 90-plus.
agreed. joe carter isn’t walking into the on-deck circle this year.
fuck that. Yadi Molina wouldn’t even let Wieters smell one of his farts behind the plate.
yadi is good, no doubt. but the question was who would you take over wieters? their defensive stats are comparable and offensively, i’d give the edge to wieters. now, take into consideration he’s a 5 years younger and it’s an easy sell.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
The Blue Jays always give the Yankees problems. Especially in Toronto.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Especially in Toronto.
a truly chaotic baseball venue.

You going tomorrow, ill?
April 5th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Sad, but true. Sitting in there it feels like midnight even in the middle of the day.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Well, for a lot of Tampa residents, it is coming up on midnight, metaphorically.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
The hell is up with Jon Lester’s ‘nickname’ on his Wikipedia page?
April 5th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
You going tomorrow, ill?
i was planning on it, but i have a golf tourney saturday morning in bethesda and seriously doubt i’d make it if i went drinking all day and night in bmore.
you?
April 5th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Ahhh, Bethesda, my stomping grounds. Yeah, planning on meeting some friends at Pickles at noon. Place was a clusterfuck last year, but whatever, I’m in too good of a mood on Opening Day to get too annoyed by it.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
pickles is awesome. just drunk balitmore tail running around.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
It doesn’t matter where the Yanks or Sox finish, they will both appear on ESPN or Fox almost nightly.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Go look at that slideshow of the Astrodome that was linked in the Roundup. That’s really sad.
April 5th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Homer Simpson.
April 5th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Yeah, I’m a wee bit thrilled.
April 5th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Can’t believe the .190 / 11 / 54 season that Teixeira is about to put up didn’t merit a mention in bad news for the Yankees. Lots of looking backwards in this post/thread. Wieters will be the best catcher in the majors this year
April 5th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
I’m late, but thanks, Tim. Was a good preview. I’m worried about Bobby, but if you win that many games with Bedard/Weiland/Wake/Miller/Lackey/DiceK getting 83 starts, that could bode well for this year (where it’s safe to expect Lester/Buch/Beckett to make 90 starts and have under a 4 ERA).
September 30th, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Great post
September 30th, 2012 at 9:34 PM
Look at you, Stark.
Hey, can you find anyone who picked the Orioles to make the postseason? I’ll give you a week. Go!
September 30th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Other than me? No. It’s fun to gloat a little. It’s been 15 years
