2012 Masters Preview: Featuring Augusta, Tiger, Rory, Phil and the Field
Why are you sitting in an office reading this? You should be on the golf course right now. It is April and the 2012 edition of the Masters is about to tee off. That means it is officially golf season. So knock off work early, grab your clubs and dream that you’re the one coming around Amen Corner with a shot at your first Major Championship. That’s as close as you’re going to get to Augusta this weekend – Especially if your dog ate your tickets.
The Masters have had plenty of first-time winners recently – when Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson haven’t been dominating. Over the last 11 Masters, Tiger has won three (2001, 2002, 2005) and Phil has won three (2004, 2006, 2010), but the other winners have been guys who haven’t really tasted major success on the PGA tour.
Charl Schwartzel (2011), Ángel Cabrera (2009), Trevor Immelman (2008), Zach Johnson (2007), and Mike Weir (2003) have all won during the Woods – Mickelson era. Of all the non-Tiger-or-Phil golfers to win a Masters in this era, only Cabrera has won a Major Championship before or since. My point is? Either Tiger, Phil or somebody else is going to win this weekend. I know that’s an incredibly trite thing to say, but that’s the way it’s been since the turn of the century.
The conditions could be rainy this weekend, so Augusta – much like chicks – will dig the long ball. I’ve included Bovada (former Bodog) odds so we can get an idea of how Vegas sees the tournament playing out. I’ve separated the preview into two sections – The Big Three and Everybody Else.
Tiger / Phil / Rory
Last year, Tiger Woods (4/1) finished tied for fourth place, just four shots back. That might be surprising since Tiger has been a supreme hack-fraud since Thanksgiving 2009. Tiger hasn’t won at Augusta since 2005, but his worst finish since then has been a tie for 6th place. Tiger is always competitive at Augusta. That, combined with the fact that he’s coming off this first tour win since 1946 (approximately) has made him the favorite to make his 15th major victory this weekend.
While Tiger is the betting favorite, Rory McIlroy (11/2) has to be the on-paper favorite to win his first Masters. Rory won his first Major in 2011 with a record-setting performance at the U.S. Open. In three 2012 tournaments, Rory has finished second, first and third. McIlroy is certainly primed for his first Green Jacket.
After the three EA Sports Tiger Woods Golf cover models (Tiger, Rory and Augusta National), Phil Mickelson (11/1) is the other no-brainer pick to win this weekend. Phil has had an up and down 2012 season, with just 4 top-25 finishes in 8 tournaments. He won the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and finished second a week later, but he also missed a cut early in the year and has four finishes outside the top twenty, including two in the 40′s. Having said all that, this is Phil Mickelson. In 2012, Phil is as likely to be in the final pairing on Sunday as he is to sweat the cut on Friday, but you’d be dumb to count out the three-time champion.
The Field
Last year Charl Schwartzel (33/1) earned his first PGA tour victory as he held off Adam Scott (33/1) and Jason Day (40/1) by two strokes. Schwartzel has two top-five finishes this season, but has missed the cut in consecutive tournaments. Neither Scott or Day have made any noise this year.
FedEx Cup leader Hunter Mahan (28/1) has two tour wins in 2012, including victory at the Shell Houston Open last week. Mahan has never finished better than 6th place at a Major Championship. Johnson Wagner (125/1) is second in the FedEx Cup standings. His best major finish was a tie for 36 at the 2008 Masters, but he has four top-10 finishes this season.
Martin Kaymer (50/1) has two top-25 finishes in 2012, plus he made this sweet trick shot where he skipped the ball across a pond and into the hole. He makes shots like that all week and he’ll be tough to catch.
Sergio Garcia… *sigh* We’re still waiting for Sergio (50/1) to seize the day and win a Major Championship. We’ve been waiting since that magical 2nd place finish at the 1999 PGA Championship. His best Masters finish came in 2004. He’s come close to winning every tournament imaginable. In 2012, he has just one top 10 finish.
Justin Rose (33/1) has been solid this year and has at least a top-10 finish in every Major. Kyle Stanley (80/1) won the prestigious Waste Management Phoenix Open two months ago, but has missed a cut and finished outside the top-50 since March began. Bubba Watson (40/1) has never been great in Major Championships, but he has torn it up in March with two second place finishes and a 4th place finish.
Keegan Bradley (33/1) has been one of the most solid players on tour in 2012 with 9 top-25 finishes in 9 tournaments this year. Bradley will be just 26-years-old next month, but the 2011 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year is coming off a Major title at the PGA Championship. He was the third player to ever win his Major debut.
Luke Donald (16/1) was the 2011 leading money winner on the tour. Donald has a sixth and first place finish in his last two tournaments this season. He’s been as close as a third place finish at the 2005 Masters. Playing well recently combined with a strong 2011 season and the fact that he has been close before makes Donald my non-Tiger/Phil/Rory pick. I apologize to the three Luke Donald fans out there.

I’m the fringiest of golf fans, but I confess I’m excited about this tournament. Count me in the Tiger Woods crowd.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Tomorrow. 36. Boom.
/waves at Spencer
April 5th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Ive got Adam Scott! Just because I like Ben on Parks & Rec.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Are that Spanish dude and Vegas playing?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
8:15am tee time…giddyup.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I’m one of those guys who always roots for records NOT to be broken. I rooted for Cal Ripken Jr. to get hurt, hoped Bonds would die, etc. I was happy Tiger’s quest got derailed, but now I’d like to see him make a run at Jack’s record, just for the drama of it all.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
I think that little bitch Keegan Bradley contends on Sunday. Rooting for Bubba, Phil, Tiger and Hunter.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Due to a little influx of cash in my gambling account from the tourney, I decided to foray into golf betting. Here’s what I went with:
Z. Johnson over J. Furyk (head to head)
A. Cabrera over T. Immelman (head to head)
Westwood finishes outside Top 20 (+150)
Watney beats Furyk, Van Pelt and Garcia (+350)
W. Simpson beats Schwartzel, Bradley, B. Watson and Rose (+400)
April 5th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
I’m picking Jason Day. For no discernable reason whatsoever.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Best dressed golfer on Tiger Woods ’12.

April 5th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
I like Keegan only because he’s a Stern fan and people always yell Baba Booey after his drives.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Outside of the obvious three, I like Bradley and Kaymer’s chances.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
What do you all think of August’s largest sponsor IBM now having a woman as CEO?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I still hope for this.
Oh and good pick Cleet. But I heard Day has a bad ankle. His wife’s a smokeshow.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I know 6 people there right now. I’m living vicariously through them this week.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Woof.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
I like him for his team allegiances
April 5th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
my official pick is rory by 5.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Oops, Augusta*
Also, what channel and time does live coverage start?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
I bet on Tiger…so I kind of have to pull for him. Otherwise, I hope any American wins…except for Bubba.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
CBS would shit themselves if Tiger and Rory were in the last group on Sunday throwing haymakers at each other.
I’m hoping for this too. Easter is a boring ass holiday.

I’m rooting for Tiger to have a 10 shot lead going into Sunday and then BLOWING it.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
Also, thank you very much, Stephen, TBL, et al for a serious golf post.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
only one of those i like if everyone continues their current form.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
You can make it fun. Try this – wear a pastel bow tie everywhere you go this weekend. Also, while wearing said bow tie, drink bourbon out of a styrofoam cup.
Reminds me – favorite golf cocktail…on course? After the round?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
on course…wintergreen copenhagen and peanut m&m’s. after the round…bong rips.
/doesn’t drink

His wife is reason enough.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
All of this.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
To be fair….the only holidays I really enjoy are the 4th of July and Halloween….
April 5th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
I need to get into bow ties.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
Vodka and sprite/ginger ale for both.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
i think im in love.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Takes a certain guy to rock that look. Most just come off as douchy. Good luck to you though.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Easter is great for one reason, its usually the first time of the year I break out a sun dress. 65 and sunny this Sunday!
April 5th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Can I come up a day early for TBL Chicago and job shadow you?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
If Miguel Angel Jimenez wins I win all the whiskey money. Going to be commenting here drunker than that Mike Quad douchebag of yesterweek wearing stained basketball shorts with a white collared shirt.

April 5th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
I probably don’t have it. Also not even sure where to purchase a nice bow tie.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
On course – usually beer
Affter round – gin & tonic
April 5th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
You work with heathens.

I know one of these days I’m going to catch her snorting vicodin off the disgusting toilet seat. It’s only a matter of time. She is vile.

I’m sure ritty doesn’t in his pleated khaki pants….
April 5th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Meh, you might be surprised. Biggest key is just owning the fuck out of it and being comfortable. And…not looking like a hipster.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
sounds like she has to pinch off a big one today, in for the long haul.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
So those pics will be posted Monday morning then, right?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
One thing I will never do again while golfing is smoke a cigar. I damn near died when I went golfing last May when it was 94, had a bunch of beer and smoked a cigar. Worst feeling ever.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Now it’s a party.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Tried this once too. It was windy as shit and the damn thing wouldn’t stay lit. Pain in the ass.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Jamal Anderson wants to be invited, but only if the party gets moved to the men’s room.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
off to play 18 here…hard to top a donald ross course for $30.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Miller Lite on the course, Post-round…
Warm Weather: Hendricks Gin and Club Soda
Cool Weather: Scotch and a splash of Soda
April 5th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Easter = Seersucker
Missed out on a golf outing tomorrow. Stupid work.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Miller Lite? Reallly?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Well written. You don’t need to capitalize Major though.
Bubba Watson (40/1) has never been great in Major Championships
Execpt when he made a playoff in the 2010 PGA.
My longshots would be Geoff Oglivy and Paul Lawrie.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
lol….
April 5th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
The best part is she’ll take a shit, not wash her hands, and make sure to put on a bunch of makeup before leaving the bathroom. She even applies lip gloss with her fingers.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
i want to play thursday/friday at Augusta. i don’t even care that i’d post some ridiculously high number, be completely out of contention and piss off whoever i was paired with.
it would be a top 5 dying wish, personally.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
6 to 8 light beers on a course doesn’t bog you down, especially in the heat. Boating and golfing are the only time I go light.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
I’ll drink shit beer on the course too. Place around here used to do dollar beers on Fridays when I was in sales and could golf every Friday. You can imagine the condition you leave the course in after that.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
I’m not gonna be drinking Guiness or an IPA while I’m golfing. Yuengling might be the heaviest beer I’ll drink on the course.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Sunkist? Reallly?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
On course: Yuengling now that it’s in Ohio. If it’s a bit cold or wet, a few small bottles of Wild Turkey
19h hole: Bourbon, neat
/Team Cigar, currently La Gloria Cubana
April 5th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Anybody ever done one of those stripper golf tournaments? Got some great stories from those. Talk about shit bagged.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Hendricks is gold, I like it straight up and if I’m wearing a monocle with a cucumber slice.
Before, during and after I like my trusty green sand castle bucket of blow.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Miller Lite? Reallly? TBL
Don’t let him fool you. I remember the time a few years ago when he told us he just got a sixer of Miller High Life (may have been MGD)and was noticeably tipsy during TBLAD.
/RIP TBLAD.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
The waterfront course across the lake from our weekend house has a 6 pack cooler and ice for 8 bucks. Bonus is that we can dock there, combining both golf and boating, while avoiding Ohio’s finest on the roadways.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
off to play 18 here…hard to top a donald ross course for $30.
71.8/132 is pretty good for only 6500 yards.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Same guy that considers Rolling Rock a premium beer, IIRC.
Are there any good light beers? Do any microbrews even fuck around with that?
Yuengling Light is decent.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Anybody ever done one of those stripper golf tournaments? Got some great stories from those.
I played in one two summers ago. Each group got a caddy (basically a stripped in a bikini). Two single guys in my group ended up eiffel towering her during a rain delay.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
19th hole – pitchers
April 5th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
I think seersucker needs to be saved for post-memorial day.
/loves seersucker
April 5th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
There’s a guy from around here – Randy Lewis – who’s a 54 year old amateur doing just that right now.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Tirico is a douche.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Do any microbrews even fuck around with that?
You could get a wheat or hefe. I’m not a golfer, but I assume glass is a no no on courses.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
I used to play in a tournament that had girls coming around with jello shots. Good times!
April 5th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Miller Lite is beneath JMc’s income bracket.
/pops open a Heineken
April 5th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Hawthorne Valley was a private track until a few years ago. I am going to escape for a round here in about 90 minutes.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Do any microbrews even fuck around with that?
Also, most make a pilsner.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
Gross. FFM threesome is the only acceptable hetero threesome.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Not really. Light beers are meant for getting hammered during the summer time….and not much else.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
I don’t think many do a light beer, though they will have a summer brew that’s isn’t as heavy. For a lighter craft brew you might want to look at a wheat beer like a Bells Oberon. Even those will have much higher alcohol than a ML though.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Some really nice courses have bottled beer on the course. For the Corona crowd normally.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Sam Adams Light is top notch.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Amstel Light isnt bad.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Two chicks at one time is almost every guy’s dream. But MMF threesomes are acceptable because they are hilarious. Dude touching, however, is impermissible.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Sam Adams Light won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Cup. There was no light beer category.
/The more you know’d.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
lol…I was a mess. I think I golfed about 14 holes and then just drove around with the strippers bonging beers for the rest of the way. This was the same tournament where I lost a bet on the front nine and went swimming in a strippers thong in to one of the ponds on 11. Alcohol makes you do dumb things, kids.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Tiger just his first shot into the trees
April 5th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
The Miller Lite 16oz alumnium cans are my go-to drink when I bring beers in my bag. But yeah, I’ll almost always use cans.
Solid light beers (non Bud/Coors/Miller division) – Sam Adams, Yuengling and I don’t mind Amstel Light either.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
I don’t care. Bud Light does it for me. I’m not a beer snob. The new Platinums will knock you on your ass.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Most wheat beer has more calories than you might think.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Guinness 4.2
Red Stripe 4.7
April 5th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Don’t bother with a Hooter’s Scramble, all the waitresses hang out with their boyfriends or the old dudes (not Random) that leave them a $50 tip every night.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
In all reality, you could probably sub Guinness (or most stouts) for a light beer. They aren’t heavy….
April 5th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Great minds and all….
April 5th, 2012 at 10:43 AM

we agree on something!

Or those scramble where they only have chicks on the green to tend the flag.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
The new Platinums will knock you on your ass.
i just learned about them last weekend, but from how it was explained to me they sounds like a classier version of bud ice.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
had a few last night mixed with my medication. They taste like beer-flavored seltzer water, but in an okay way.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
on-course drink is Bulleit n’ Coke
April 5th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
You can have 10 minutes alone with my green sand castle cocaine bucket.
Anything under 5% I would consider light. Anything under 4.2% is unacceptable. Also it has to be a tall boy(1), if you beer fits in a tea cup you are a doily using motherfucker.
(1) 12 ounce beers are acceptable for shotgunning or clandestine drinking.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I gotta $100 with a co-worker. He’s got Tiger and Hunter. I got the field. He made this offer. Incredible.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Platinums are 6%, so knock down a sixer and you’ll be fucking fat girls in no time.
April 5th, 2012 at 10:52 AM

April 5th, 2012 at 10:52 AM

April 5th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Work got in the way after I asked the question.
Spencer, you don’t drink? I knew you couldn’t be trusted.
On course – Budweiser (the red, white, and blue)
After round – Girly (or is it girlie?) or bourbon/soda/splash of diet.

I gotta $100 with a co-worker. He’s got Tiger and Hunter. I got the field. He made this offer. Incredible.
He could have thrown in a few more guys. Good action on your side though. Even in the Tiger slam he was even odds to win, and the field wasnt as good as it is now.

All of this. Well played.
Went to a BBQ last weekend, devolved into burning windblown trees and various other flammable objects while passing around a Bulleit bottle. For some reason my head hurt the next day.
