Please Slap Anyone Who Thinks Jared Sullinger Will Be Kevin Love in the NBA
Love Jared Sullinger as a college basketball player. He’s a nice low-post player with a feathery touch. I think if he had stayed four years he could have been an all-time great in the annals of Ohio State basketball.
(If Jerry Lucas is 1st, and John Havlicek is 2nd, I don’t see why after four years Sullinger couldn’t have finished No. 3, ahead of Jim Jackson, Michael Redd, Herb Williams and Evan Turner.)
That said, I’m not sure Sullinger will be nearly that dominant at the NBA level. The OSU sophomore announced today he’s entering to the NBA draft. Anyone who compares him to Kevin Love – who is averaging 26.5 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, and probably will be 3rd in MVP voting this year – cannot be trusted to operate a vehicle or a computer. There is absolutely no chance it happens.
It’ll be interesting to see how Sullinger measures this summer before the draft. He’s listed at 6-9, 265. I’d guess he’s closer to 6-foot-7. Besides his struggles against college centers (see the Final 4 game against Jeff Withey of Kansas) and physical teams (check out this numbers against bruising Michigan State), I didn’t love his defense against the pick-and-roll. He uses his width and smarts to devour rebounds, but in the pros, it isn’t going to be that easy going against taller and more physical players. Sullinger didn’t significantly improve from his freshman to sophomore year (unless injuries were an issue?) making me wonder if he’s going to get better in the pros.
Sullinger will be a first-round pick because he can score, but ultimately, I envision him as a DeJuan Blair-type player who comes off the bench, plays 20-25 minutes a night and averages about 10 points a game for 8-9 years. Which is all very good and well and he’ll make a lot of money and be set for life … I just don’t see him in Kevin Love’s solar system.
I’ve got Sullinger going 12th in my latest mock draft.

Seems like he’s Big Baby Davis 2.0. A better, quicker version but still limited by the fact that he’s a below-the-rim player.

maybe a 10-5 guy in the association. maybe.

I was expecting a link to someone making this comparison for which to slap
April 4th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
So … who, er, actuallythinks he’ll be the next Kevin Love?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
who started this style of writing? I mean, it’s either an incomplete sentence or an order. was it Peter King? he does this shit in MMQB all the time and it’s mind-numbingly annoying.
this is rich coming from you.
no Greg O-done?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
The next Corliss Williamson.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Seems like a more skilled Leon Powe.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
TBL — Why did you make this comparision? I have not heard one person comparing the two, it doesn’t make any sense.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Problem with Sullinger being compared to Blair is that any GM who would take Blair at 12 shouldn’t be allowed to procreate.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Could he turn himself into what Corliss Williamson did? Not great but…somewhat productive?

SEO, he wants to get hits on Kevin Love searches I’m sure.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
And give anyone who would compare Sullinger to Frank Brickowski a purple nurple
April 4th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I mean in stats production he might be similar to Blair (granted I seriously doubt Sullinger puts up a single 20-20 game in his rookie year) but aren’t they completely opposite physically? Blair is listed at six seven but is shorter and is just a stocky freak brick shithouse.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Actually heard someone on ESPN give this comparison, so it’s not out of left field.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:18 PM

April 4th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
More just an aside, but looking at the Spurs lineup, their GM/coach should be in serious running for end of year awards. Somehow always picking in the bottom of the draft, they’ve managed to get enough picks/trades to pan out to give themselves a ridiculously deep team. I’m not sure if it’ll help nearly as much in the playoffs, but I their 8-13 guys are better and have more experience in big minutes than any other team.
Splitter, Bonner, Neal, Diaw have all gotten significant minutes at some point or another. James Anderson has moments, and I’ve always liked Patty Mills (and was surprised he never made it in the NBA, now he’s replaced TJ Ford). Those are 6 pretty good role players, who don’t crack the top 7 on the team. So perfectly constructed for this season to get them a good seed and keep the top rotation fresh.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
I think offensively, he could be like Love in that he could pick and pop or step out and hit jumpers and 3′s (whether he can do that as well as Love is anyone’s guess), but his rebounding at the next level will be nowhere near Love’s.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:21 PM

I didn’t see a link or even a ‘draw your own conclusions’ type statement about who said it.
If someone did, a link to the statement would be neat. Bellowing about an argument no one made is always a good time.

April 4th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
He’ll be Horace Grant on the right team. Would not want to run an offense through him, but he’d be a legit 2nd option on an average team or 3rd option on a great team.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Averaged 20 and 15 last year.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Sullinger loves cheeseburgers. That’s the comparison.

He reminds me of a more sensitive, thoughtful Greg Kite.

I saw a stat somewhere (I think Simmons MVP column) referencing “win shares per 48″. I don’t follow the NBA enough to know, but is that as stupid as it sounds? Is that like saying “WAR per game” in baseball?

April 4th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Sullinger is more skilled than Big Baby on the perimeter. Sully is also a better ball handler and passer.
DeJuan Blair is a very successful banger, but has next to no offensive game. That is an insult to Jared’s game, honestly.
I will not compare Jared to Love, but remember what Love looked like in college… A 6’8″ strong guy who couldn’t score in the post at the next level.
He played strictly the post at OSU, which he won’t do in the NBA. He can score from 17 feet in and will do so in the NBA. He can rebound as well as anyone, regardless of size.
I think he compares decently with Elton Brand. Brand may have had more post moves, but Sully is a better rebounder and passer.
Sully also played most of the year with Plantar Fasciatis (sp?), so he couldn’t get off the floor very well. So, some of his struggles inside may be alleviated with healthy feet next year too.
And, last year, with much better perimeter players (Diebler, Lighty), Sully was much more successful because he wasn’t getting doubled and tripled nightly. He could get the ball, kick it out for open shots or to re-post.
He must work on upper body strength to become elite in the Association, but he has the skill set to become an elite guy (20-10).

April 4th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
To be fair, if people thought Kevin Love would become Kevin Love, he would have gone 2 in the draft and not 5. And, though it is an odd comparison, their freshman stats are not that dissimilar.
Sullinger vs. Love
PPG: 17.2 17.5
RPG: 10.2 10.6
FG%: 54% 56%
FT%: 70% 76%
Wingspan: 7’1 6’11
April 4th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
Were Brand’s 20-10 seasons weakened by advanced metrics? He was always a top 10 rebounder the first half of his career, right? Just because you don’t lead the league, top 10 means you get more than the best player on 2/3 of the teams, and he was a forward, not a center.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
I’m not satisfied until they break it down to the seconds.
He’s #1 in DIPPS (Dribbles Into Paint Per Seconds).
April 4th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Win shares per 48 is an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player per 48 mins. League average is roughly .100. Some examples from this season: Love .235, LeBron .293, Durant .233
Love is listed at 6’10” and certainly looks a lot bigger on the court compared to Sullinger
April 4th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Reggie, Sally Field in Smokey in the Bandit vs. Courtney Thorne-Smith in Summer School, who ya got?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Brand was a much better offensive rebounder and shot blocker (longer arms). Those are two key indicators for the kind of athleticism needed to have success in the NBA.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
That’s a good one …. I’ve also seen Carlos Boozer (without the screaming “And-1″ everytime he shoots)

I sense a Bob Knight transcript in…..
April 4th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Duh.
What is the point of having it per 48 minutes though? Some stats are good to normalize… it doesn’t make statistical sense to do that for a cumulative stat, which is sounds like win shares is (correct me if I’m wrong). It’s like having a RP have a WAR per IP stats. Mariano Rivera would be awesome if he pitched 200 innings a year. The problem is that he couldn’t handle it. Staying healthy and contributing minutes is a independent variable that is used to calculate a dependent variable like win shares.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:41 PM

April 4th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
FWIW, David Thorpe today was predicting that Sulliger could be the 2nd most impactful player in the draft after Davis, due to the increased court spacing in the NBA as compared to the college game. However, I am no basketball savant, so do with it what you will
April 4th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Oh my… I’m going Sally Field by a whisker… That’s a great comparison.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
brand was a 20-10 guy in his prime. Sully won’t sniff that.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
A team averages 0.5 wins per game (obviously) divided by 5 players on the court = 0.1 wins/game.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Brevity is not a strength, especially when it comes to TBL and Ohio State guys.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
maybe they’re getting weighted credit for AP classes?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
The reason a rate stat is helpful in basketball is that it makes it easier to compare players.
A guy may get more minutes than a less talented guy solely because the less talented guy plays on a shittier team and doesn’t have to fight for minutes.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
That is .1 average per POSITION per 48 minutes. Not per player… it just seemed exceedingly stupid and useless to me, not to mention uninterpretable.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
But it’s not the same 5 guys on the court for the whole season, so wouldn’t league average be slightly below 0.1?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Can a player have a negative win share?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I love stats and all, but this stat seems a little, I don’t know…a little too much. I’m sure it’s great for GMs and ESPECIALLY agents, though.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
By default, it works out to .1 per player.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Yeah thats crazy, he’s not even white… when did we start comparing black guys to white guys?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Hello, strawman.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
But playing more minutes is part of being good. And sustaining excellence in a more tiring role is part of being good. It’s a catch-22 and I can see limited uses of the per-48 (depending on what goes into it, and if it takes into account who else is on the court), but part of WAR that is good, is that you are penalized for getting injured. JD Drew may be okay when he is in there, but if you have to use a below-replacement level player the other 25 games a year, that may hurt more than a steady guy who never gets hurt.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Is that like a negative WAR? Like the guy’s below a replacement level player?
April 4th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
I’d lean towards CTS due to the bikini scene but again, it’s a close call. Whatever I’ve seen last.

April 4th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Per 48 each player should have 0.1 average, because it’s as if the team got to play their 10 players 48 minutes. Makes sense…
April 4th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
All you need to know is: you win or you die.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
I guess. I am not too familiar with this stat…but if I was plugged into an NBA lineup, I would have to assume my contributions would not be positive. Like Jimmer.

April 4th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Sullinger’s greatest strength is his post game. He’s got minimal range and no face-to-the-basket game. When you’ve got an ass that size (yes, they’ve actually written and talked about it) with some good strength, you can muscle college guys around the basket. Not in the NBA. His game as it is now translates poorly to the NBA even for a 7-footer, let alone one with a 6-7 to 6-9 frame.
April 4th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Yes
April 4th, 2012 at 2:55 PM

April 4th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
by the way, I wouldn’t even compare UCLA kevin love to NBA kevin love. These college player to NBA player comparisons are just as fruitless as bar arguments about who’s the better sportsman between Jordan and Gretzky. Sure it soaks up the boredom but it leaves you with a headache.

Marc Jackson made half a career out of post moves, and he was a point guard. Any player with a legit post game, no matter their position, can make it work in the NBA if the coaching staff realizes how to offer a counter and space his teammates.
I think per Wally, I’d like to know how bad his feet or back were hurting. Physically he was less this year so either’s getting out of shape or hurt.

April 4th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
He pretty much did, though I was talking more style of play than body type. Cummings couldn’t move well later in his career, but could still shoot the rock and barrel his way to the basket and hold position down low. I’m absolutely not drawing the comparison of SD/MIL/SA Cummings.
