Jim Gray and Bill Walton Had a Brief, Interesting Discussion About John Calipari’s Vacated Final Fours
Jim Gray and Bill Walton call the Final Four on the radio, and as you can imagine, they’re quite the odd couple – Gray is your dorky news guy; Walton specializes in dry humor.* When Anthony Davis and Kentucky beat Kansas Monday, here’s what went down:
Jim Gray: Coach Calipari, 4th time in the Final 4 …
Bill Walton: No, second time in the Final 4.
Jim Gray: Fourth time in the Final 4, second time in the National Championship game …
Bill Walton: Second time in the Final Four Jim. The first two times were vacated.
Jim Gray: Bill, we dont live in the Soviet Union, the records are not erased, let’s not debate this
Somewhere, Jim Litke is applauding Jim Gray. Listen to the audio at Fang’s Bites.

* I know people love the Breen/Van Gundy combo on the NBA, but trust me when I tell you nothing topped NBC’s trio of Costas, Walton and Snapper Jones back in the 90s.

Reminds me of the reporter last year who asked Calipari what it was like being in the Final Four for the first time.

Bill Walton should be the last guy to get all sanctimonious.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Marv Albert and the Czar of the Tellstrator…Costas was okay and Walton’s an interesting dude but a good announcer he is not
April 4th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Was thinking the same thing. Jim should have asked him what he thought about Sam Gilbert.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Snapper Jones was terrible. TERRIBLE.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I liked Walton as a color man. I prefer Costas on my baseball telecasts as opposed to basketball. They had the a couple of the Utah-Chicago games on CSN here a few months back and after listening to them now, he really wasn’t all that great. His commentary was obvious and even as a Bulls fan I can admit that he was horribly biased towards Jordan and the Bulls. He’s great on those Thursday night MLB Network games though when they pair him with Verducci.

If Pete Rose had a little class as Jim Gray, Gray would still be pulling splinters out of his colon from where Charlie Hustle shoved a bat up his ass for that stunt a few years ago.
Nothing Jim Gray likes more than to hijack a situation to ensure his worthless opinion or personal feelings take top billing over the ‘moment’ itself. That’s the difference between him and a Nantz. Nantz may not be able to stomach Tiger Woods, but if he has to do be there I assure you he’ll have more class than to slide the jacket on and hijack the situation by asking, “So what feels better, Tiger, sliding that coat on again or holding down ‘an ass you own’ and ‘choking the shit out of her’?”

Walton wasn’t that horrible as an announcer, he was better than Tom “dolphin teeth” Tolbert. Walton’s biggest sin was going on and on about the eyes of Jason Kidd.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Agreed that Rose has no class.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:11 AM
Costas/Michaels doing Giants-Mets last year was one of the highlights of season. I hope they’re able to do it again.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:14 AM
you think you are better than russians, comrade gray? this guy…who he think he is?
April 4th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Apparently Dustin Johnson has pulled out of the Master’s per Paul Pabst. Said he tweaked his back picking up a jet ski.

Walton wasn’t that horrible as an announcer,
yes. i used to mute the tv and put houston radio on while watching the rockets dominate.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
haha — I love DJ
April 4th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
yea…announced yesterday. sucks to waste a masters like that.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Damn, dog eats owner’s Par 3 contest ticket.
He’s lucky it wasn’t for the actual tournament.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Bill Walton should be the last guy to get all sanctimonious.
Didnt he once say the only person getting paid more than the Wooden UCLA guys them were the Lakers?
April 4th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Speaking of Augusta…this is so badass.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
it’s crazy how “frequent” that happens…vijay did that a couple years ago too. dear lord those fuckers are good.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Hey Walton, 2 words, Sam.Gilbert.
asshole.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Or what Matty Cam just said
April 4th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
I stand back and just witness the Dustin Johnson experiment. I refuse to be suprised by anything he does.
Wins at Pebble Beach, worked over Gulbis, Goofed at Whistling Straights, Tweaks his back lifting a jet ski. 400 yard drives. Flubbed chips. Enjoy the show.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
re: masters…sounds like it’s wet and muddy, so the course is going to be playing pretty long and approach shots are going to hold greens a lot more.
the bombers were already favored, but even moreso now. the guys a wet augusta really hurts are the “shorter” players…luke donald, hunter mahan, stricker, snedeker, etc.
adjust picks accordingly.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Either in 2011 or 2010 Fuzzy Zoeller pulled some guy out of the crowd for a tee shot at 12 during a practice round. Guy shoved it to 4-5 feet.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
yeah, but if you looked at it like it saved us all from watching DJ three putt his way around Augusta, maybe it was a blessing in disguise.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
I’m not letting the rain thing drive my picks too much. I watched Tim Clark & Dimarco deal with worse conditions. If anything, I think it;ll favor the younger, healthier guys who can handle playing 27 holes on SAT or SUN. I think Garrigus got a good pairing for him.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Jim Furyk would like you to stop underestimating him, Spencer
April 4th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Fucking awesome. Everything about the Masters is badass, at least for a golf dork like myself.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
God I can’t wait for tomorrow. I have another Daddy at Home day with the little one as the wife is back at work, meaning it’s a baby bjorn, single barrel on the rocks kind of afternoon.
/dougies
//safely while wearing a baby bjorn
April 4th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
That almost makes up for his epic “fried chicken, or whatever they eat” line he had about Tiger years ago.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
False.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
only one top 10 at the masters since 2005…i’ll pass.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
someone say Garrigus?
/loads one hitter
//heads to bathroom on #13
April 4th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
i never understood that joke…i mean, seriously, who complains about fried chicken and watermelon? that shit’s fucking delicious.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Especially with waffles and syrup.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
and purple drank
April 4th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
All of this. If you don’t like fried chicken and watermelon that’s a massive you-problem.

CHICKEN AND WAFFLES??!!
THAT’S IT!

Furyk’s only great year at Augusta was the OMeara/Duval year (98?). His US Open win was considered the worst major field of the past 15 years. He had Oakmont is his hands and choked it away on 17.
Very likeable guy, consumate pro, but he’s the underachiever somehow pegged as an overacheiver.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
overachiever only because his swing is unorthodox, even tho it’s as close to being zeroed out as it gets. great short game. overrated putter.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
What the fuck is juice?
April 4th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
overachiever only because his swing is unorthodox,
exactly. In today’s era of homonogized swings, he’s an outlier. two generations ago, he’s a guy who didn’t win much for contending all the time.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
What the fuck is juice?
Dave’s take on the Sunny Delight commerical remains timeless.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
two generations ago, he’d be trevino…he’d win a lot more if he wasn’t racing seventy thoroughbreds every tournament. all it takes is one hot putter in the hands of some twenty-something that can blast it 330 for furyk not to get the W.
and lets not go overboard with the furyk is overrated thing…his resume is right in line with fred couples, tom weiskopf and davis love III’s and all those guys had far more ability to hit the ball.
April 4th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Bill Walton is a fucking legendary announcer. Van Gundy isn’t even in his class, the way no other program comes close to UCLA.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
the bombers were already favored, but even moreso now. the guys a wet augusta really hurts are the “shorter” players…luke donald, hunter mahan, stricker, snedeker, etc.

This isn’t Russia Danny. Is this Russia? This isn’t Russia.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Sugar. Water. And of course. Purple.
/I want that purple stuff
April 4th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Ugh. Every time he contends, announcers put his swing in slo-mo and do the whole “not bad for a guy with a goofy swing” schtick. So tired.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
seriously…moe norman, trevino, nicklaus all had weird swings and were some of the best ballstrikers ever (not to mention arnie and gary player)…doesn’t mean shit what the swing looks like, only at impact. dont all gotta look like hogan or snead.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Anything either of these guys says should be taken with a grain of salt. Gray is one of those guys that obviously has compromising pictures of top executives tucked away in his sock drawer, while Walton is just a harmless clown. I feel bad for him that he could never stay healthy in the NBA, but as an analyst he’s just looking to rile people up whenever possible.
And UCLA is not an elite program. It dominated one period of time- Lew Alcindor attended on a music scholarship, go figure- but hasn’t been a consistent power like UNC or Kentucky. Great, so they have 11 titles, 10 of which were won when they got every top player. I wonder if Walton still thinks UCLA has been to 18 Final Fours, since they also had to vacate one.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Oh I dont disagree with you at all Spencer. Im just saying there’s a lot of lazy analysis of Furyk’s game.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
yea, we’re in agreement…im hating on that lazy analysis with you.
April 4th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
you would have been sent to the gulag long ago if we did, friend.

A bigger question: has Johnson Wagner shaved off his porn ‘stache? His pic on the Masters website has him clean-shaven.
