2012 MLB Preview: AL West
The 2012 Major League Baseball season began last week with an already forgotten series in Japan between the A’s and the Mariners. Then we went back into Spring Training mode. Tonight, the Marlins host the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Tomorrow, some more teams will play baseball. The same thing happens Friday.
Eventually, all teams will have played a regular season baseball game. Yes, it’s quite a snazzy plan concocted here by Bird Selig and friends.
Last week we first took a peek at the NL Central, then we shadowboxed with the NL West. Yesterday, it was the stacked NL East.
Today, we head over to the AL.
Texas Rangers
2011 Record — 96-66, 1st place
Notable Additions — Yu Darvish. Some players already think he’s a conceited assclown. I think he’s funny.
Tragic Losses — CJ Wilson and his bevvy of supermodels. Thankfully, Dallas is beyond loaded with top shelf cougars. The Rangers will be just fine.
Good News — Ian Kinsler, Elvis Andrus, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre, Michael Young, Nelson Cruz, and Mike Napoli. Just a relentless lineup, and fun to watch. The bats will be there all season long. Additionally, their farm system remains stacked.
Bad News — The past couple years I have found myself not being sold on their starting pitching. I feel the same way again this year, which means I don’t know jack shit considering the Rangers have made back-to-back World Series appearances.
Outlook — I loathe this division more than Tim McCarver despises Deion. I imagine anyone whose favorite team resides in the NL Central also hates this division. Outlasting three other teams compared to everyone else dealing with four and in one case, five, is complete horseshit. 91 wins, 2nd place.
Probable 2012 Anthem — Well, what else, John Daly singing John Daly’s “I Found It.” The jarring montage will melt your heart, and your brain.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
2011 Record — 86-76, 2nd place
Notable Additions — Albert Pujols. Yes, it’s still strange to say, isn’t it? If you’re a Cardinals fan, let me help you out there and finish wiping that self-respect off your face. Seriously, get a hold of yourselves. He’s 32. He’ll be nursing flappier breasts than the Samoan Brothers within the next 23 months. Embrace that shit. In addition to Albert, CM Punk’s favorite baseball player, straight edger CJ Wilson has joined in on the lively Conga line. And what exactly does CJ do for fun? Well CJ publicizes the cell phone numbers of former teammates that he was never really friends to begin with. Sounds almost as fun as a cheese grater to the sack.
Tragic Losses — Tyler Chatwood, Joel Pineiro, and Fernando Rodney. They won 86 games and this is all they’ve lost? I’m terrified. Just hand them the division crown right now.
Good News — If this were the NFL, it would be fun to guess which year Pujols would be waived. I would say three seasons in L.A. and then a humbling stroll to Queens to finish his career as a Met with a giant fork in his back. Somehow this fits into good news though? Oh. Tickets and merchandise. The Angels, regardless of record, will be cackling their way through the line at the bank thanks to the addition of Albert. And deservedly so.
Bad News — They are still known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Hilarious. Kind of wish the Jets were officially known as the New York Jets of East Rutherford.
Outlook — Seriously, that’s all they lost? 95 wins, 1st place.
Probable 2012 Anthem — The opening theme to Fat Albert.
Oakland Athletics
2011 Record — 74-88, 3rd place
Notable Additions — Yoenis Cespedes, Josh Reddick, and Bartolo Colon. Love the addition of Fatolo. Signature A’s signing in getting what could be a very productive starting pitcher for next to nothing.
Tragic Losses — Josh Willingham, David DeJesus, and Hideki Matsui.
Bad News — Is the entire upper tier at “O.co Coliseum” still covered with a tarp? The name of the stadium really says it all. Seriously, was anyone else aware that it’s called the O.co Coliseum? That’s cute. Never change, Oakland A’s, never change.
Outlook — I’ve learned my lesson in thinking Billy Beane has another moonshot left in his bat, at least with this team. So naturally, by stating that (you know the drill by now) the A’s will rip through the division with the ease of a Cutco knife. Official prediction is 3rd place and 77 wins.
Probable 2012 Anthem — I picked the A’s to win the division last year. They repaid me for that courage with 74 wins. For that, I gift Beane and the fellas with Lou Bega’s “Mambo No. 5.” Treasure it with pride.
Seattle Mariners
2011 Record — 67-95, 4th place
Notable Additions — Jesus Montero, Hisashi Iwakuma and George Sherrill. I was all set to bash these additions, but with the opportunities I saw Montero get last season, the guy was a delight. I honestly think Seattle has a very special hitter here, which certainly assists in, well, shooting for 68-plus wins.
Tragic Losses — Chris Gimenez, Jack Cust, Wily Mo Pena, Aaron Laffey, Adam Kennedy, and Josh Bard, also commonly known as a towering glass of who-gives-a-shit. Michael Pineda was seemingly a big loss, but he’s already got a comfy seat on the 163-day DL with a torn hammy and a bad shoulder to along with a pair of bruised testicles.
Good News — There’s no way the Mariners lose more than 95 games. Even better, they might win 68. Seriously, that’s all we got until the Yankees unload their entire prospect mill for the services of King Felix.
Bad News — Justin Smoak is storming his way to stardom, but not really. Remember when Cliff Lee used to pitch in Mariners-branded clothing? Those were the days.
Outlook — Disturbingly overcast with a 106% chance of showers. Last place. Again.
Probable 2012 Anthem — “Breath” by Pearl Jam from the Singles soundtrack because it’s Seattle, bro. And somewhat of a forgotten gem.
Since this was mentioned in the Angels portion, here you go:

I gotta flop Wash’s guys with the Angels. I think Albert and Wilson will undoubtedly make them a better team than they were last year but I just love that Rangers offense in the AL. Darvish being the Rangers 4th starter is an interesting slot for him but I thin Neftali Feliz is the X-Factor for the Rangers this year. If he can be a starter that gives them 6 innings each time out, they’ve got a rotation capable of winning this division again.
Still have no idea why the A’s signed Cespedes.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
He’ll be nursing flappier breasts than the Samoan Brothers within the next 23 months.
Ugh. Ugly image to have seared into your brain.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp, Josh Reddick, and Bartolo Colon.
Crisp was with the A’s last year, IIRC.
Otherwise, I am digging these previews. Keep ‘em coming.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
So if you’re into gambling, who’s the pick here: Rangers or Angels? Cause given the new wild card rules, the loser would have a winner-take-all single-game elimination date against the Red Sox/Yankees.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
SROD, oops, that’s right. I’ve booted Crisp and his lavish hair from the premises.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Can I comment on how Hernia wrote this preview, or do I have to stay on topic?
April 4th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
I still like the Rangers over the Angels…barely. The lineup is much more consistent. Angels have to pray Morales is healthy all year and they still have the worst contract in history sitting in left field instead of the next legend, Mike Trout.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:19 PM
I don’t know what this means, but yes.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Was referring to previous post. have really enjoyed these previews.
I haven’t heard that PJ song in almost 20 years.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Single funniest athlete cameo of all time
April 4th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Nothing to do with the AL West, but it is baseball related. Best thing I’ve read today. May get dusty in your office.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
I still like the fact that one of Yankees-Red Sox-Rays-Rangers-Angels (Tigers get in by default) won’t get in and two of the five are in a one game playoff.
I think the Rangers win the division again, though probably not by as much as last year (10 games).
April 4th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Damn, when you said PJ I thought you meant PJ Harvey.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
It’s even worse for the NL. You could have a one game playoff between two teams that won 88 or more games.

Sad and uplifting, all at once. I know other sports can provide that connection between generations, but to me there is something different about how baseball creates great memories between fathers and sons.
Nicely done, SC.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
“Steve, don’t cum yet.”
April 4th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Thanks for the heads up on this SC. Who doesn’t remember their first game with their Dad/Step-Dad? I remember listening in my Mom’s old car when Mike Schmidt retired and crying (Schmidt is/always will be my favorite player).
April 4th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
All six of those teams are very good. Gonna be a bloodbath.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:46 PM
The other day Kurkjian and Olney both said that by the end of the year those will be the 6 best teams in baseball.

You’re talking 7-game Divisional Series and 7-game LCS for the eventual AL Champ.
So yes, they’ll likely be gassed while the Giants or Phils are calmly waiting for them at the end of the rainbow.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:49 PM
My first game was against the Reds in 1989. May 27th. Beat the Reds 5-3. I was 5. Rick Sutcliffe pitched against Jose Rijo. Rijo hit Sandberg in the hand and he had to be removed from the game. We went to Spring Training the next year and I got to meet Mark Grace and the Hawk. It was actually my mom, my brother and my grandpa.
My first game with the old man was a White Sox game in 1991. It’s where I learned just how awesome Frank Thomas was.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
I cannot confirm if Pete Rose had money on that game or not though.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Loved it.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
My first game with my dad will be Saturday, May 26th of this year and it definitely will be memorable. I’m going to 3 of the 4 Giants/Marlins games in Miami.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Howie Kendrick is gonna have a monster year, and Trumbo (while a circus) at third will be good too. Plus it looks like Kendrys is back to %100 finally. Can’t wait for this year.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
I can’t remember when my first game was…I think I was 4 or 5, so it would have been 1987 or 1988. I do remember my Dad getting first row tickets on the first base line and I desperately was waiting for a foul ball. The 9th inning, a foul ball comes our way finally and the ball boy gives it to me. My Dad still has that ball somewhere.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:56 PM

April 4th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Then you have to go an remind me about Vernon Wells. Shit!
April 4th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
Who doesn’t remember their first game with their Dad/Step-Dad?
Mine was Cards/Mets in old Busch a few years back. My dad, brother and son and me. Gooden started for the Mets and got lit up. Just hanging out in the bleachers on a warm summer night was pretty dang cool.
April 4th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
I’ve only gotten one foul/home run ball in my entire life and it came off the bat of fellow Nicaraguan Marvin Benard. Was sitting down the left field line when he fouled off a line drive near me. The ball bounced off the steps and right into my hands, it was awesome.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Natural grass or astro turf? We went to a game there in the early 90s when they still had the turf. It was July. The temperature on the field had to be 110 degrees. Players’ feet HAD to be melting on that surface.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
My first game was Brewers/Tigers. Probably in ’86. Robin Yount hit two homers, and the Tigers lost.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Some of my favorite games that I’ve been to:
-The JD Drew Battery game in 1999
-Mets-Phillies when during the rain delay, a fan crawled into the tube where they had the tarp and the cops had to point their guns at the dude to get him out
-Phils-Red Sox last year when Cliff Lee went nuts and 4 hit the Red Sox
-Phils-Reds two years ago when Doc and Travis Wood had a shutout and a no-hitter going until the 9th
-Phils-Yankees when Howard hit 2 HR and just gutted the Yanks
April 4th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
- Cubs-Phillies and the Victorino beer toss. I went because Pedro was starting.
- Game 6, 2003. Fuck me. (we were on Waveland)
- Game 7, 2003. Fuck me. (was in section 424)
- Game 1, 2008. Fuck me.
- Game 6, 1993 ALCS. White Sox v. Blue Jays. Fuck me. (I rooted for the Sox because my dad is a fan.)
- Liriano’s no hitter last year against the White Sox.
- The Rockies-Cubs game a couple years ago where we came back from down 9-1 to win it.
- Aramis Ramirez’s walk-off homer against the White Sox in 2008. The place went completely up for grabs.
- Fukudome’s debut against the Brewers. He hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Gagne to tie it. Cubs still lost in extras. I felt Wrigley shake when he hit the homer. It was an Opening Day.
- The day after Daryl Kile died we played the Cardinals on Sunday Night Baseball. His number was on the Wrigley Field board all game. Very somber.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
That game was nuts. Can’t believe they poured that beer on Shane as well. He’s not a dick at all.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
I haven’t been to many memorable games.
Only one playoff game, so that’s near the top of my list be default, even if the Sox got crushed (’90 ALCS Game 1 vs Oak). We left early as the 9th got out of hand, and I remember walking outside Fenway and the crowd kept groaning as OAK poured it on.
The only other memorable game was Pedy striking out 17 Mariners, including Griffey 3 times, in ’99. My friends and I won a fundraiser at our school, and our principal took us out for steaks and the game.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Tha amazing thing is, once the Astros arrive, you’ll still only have to outlast three other teams.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Mine was Cards/Mets in old Busch a few years back.
Natural grass or astro turf?
It was grass. It was also an early evening game, July/August timeframe. Still hotter than hell, though.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
My first ballgame was at Milwaukee County Stadium (amazing I didn’t give up on the sport after that, what a dump)…saw Robin Yount get hit #2,997 but sadly he’d get no closer
Most memorable was probably Brewers-Twins in 2005 just because it was fun being there hating on Minnesota and that game was the one where Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder hit their first career homers (of course right before he swung I was bitching about why if they were going to pinch-hit a lefty why not Lyle Overbay instead of the rookie, we’ve had many a laugh about that since)
April 4th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
And then the survivor loses to the NL wild card team that barely finished above .500.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
My most memorable games were:
NLCS Game 4, 10/13/2002 and NLCS Game 5, 10/14/2002
Two outs, tie game, bottom ninth. Steve Kline vs. Kenny Lofton. David Bell on 2nd, Shawon (!!) Dunston on 1st. Crowd going nuts. Crack! Base hit to right, and HERE COMES BELL!!! SAFE!!!
/I have wiped clean EVERYTHING about the subsequent WS, never happened
April 4th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
I also remember going to a Yanks-Tigers game in Sept. 2003 when the Tigers were awful and we sat in the bleachers. Poor Tigers outfielders at that time.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Most memorable game was Game 5 of the 2003 World Series. Sat in first row of outfield upper deck. It was great, because fuck the Yankees.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Most memorable for me was the Indians-A’s game in ’86 when Dave Stewart cold-cocked Pat Corrales. I think there were maybe a thousand people in the stands, and I was one of ‘em.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
My favorite game I ever attended. Nothing like coming back from down 9-5 in the 9th, and my boy Damon hitting a homerun to win it to my section.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
I meant to link it
April 4th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Your guys’ memories of specific games is pretty impressive. I can’t remember specific games (though I really only started watching baseball and going to games in college), but I do remember seeing Randy Johnson pitch and loving the way he approached the game (the Diamondbacks were playing the Angles in an interleague game I think). I also always being on the edge of my seat whenever Vlad Guerrero came to the plate. I loved how he swang at everything, and remember watching him hit one that was almost at his feet to dead center.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
This is pretty sweet
April 4th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Never been to a playoff game. Someday.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
Oh wait, watching Mark Buehrle hit a home run at Miller Park and the Sox tagging Trevor Hoffman for his first run of the season to win 5-4 is my favorite attended ballgame ever…Sox fans were owning the bleachers, so much fun
April 4th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
I don’t remember my first game because I was young, probably 5-6 range. I went to a ton of games between the ages of 6-12, than not much until HS, a bunch of games from 18-24, and only a couple games since then.
Other memorable game was Ted William’s Day*, when I think was the 50th anniversary of him hitting .406. I don’t remember anything about the game, but I remember the ceremony, I remember my mom getting lost driving home, and I still have the commemorative poster.
*I was going to go to the first game after Williams died, but when I heard the news, I knew it would be a nightmare getting tickets
April 4th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Mostly because many of them are filled with pain. I think the 2008 playoff game was more crushing than the 2003 ones. After the Bartman thing, I kinda knew we were fucked. In 2008, even after the Loney slam, I thought the Cubs could win it. They were the best team in the National League that year. The best by a wide margin actually. Then, Game 2 and the 4 errors happened. Game 3 was just procedural to lose in LA and get swept out.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Other memorable games I just thought of…
Expos vs. Mariners in Seattle: I remember seeing Javier Vasquez pump a 98 mph fastball and on the very next pitch throw a 69 mph curve that the hitter could have swung twice at he was so early. Just amazing to see someone throw back to back pitches with a 30 mph difference
Orioles vs. Yankees in original Yankee Stadium: Only trip to the stadium, had to go once and I will never forget having that opportunity
Indians vs. A’s in Oakland: I remember sitting in the 4th row behind the Indians dugout and Manny coming up. As soon as I heard the crack of the bat I jumped up and yelled HOLY SHIT THAT’S GONE!! and it was a fucking BOMB. Everyone around me booed and it made it even better.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
Fuck and yes. Three games:
2005 ALCS Game One – The White Sox go 11-1 during the playoffs on their way to a World Series and I go to the one fucking game they lose. Angels played well into the night the day before, flights were delayed, they got in at something like 7 in the morning, and still won. Swept the Red Sox, took games 2-5 from the Angels, and swept the Astros.
Mid-Season 2005 – Some buddies and I are in the bullpen bar giving Jacque Jones shit in right field and after an inning he came out with a baseball signed ’2002, 2003, & 2004 AL Central Champ Twins – Love, Jacque’ I never wanted to punch a Twins player less.
Time Unknown, Perhaps 2003/4 – Buehrle beat the Mariners 2-1 in something like 85 minutes in a day game. It was so methodical it was scary. Also, I lacked the time to get sufficiently drunk.
I also watched the Buehrle perfect game on-line and lost my shit twice (9th inning catch and final out) sitting in my office.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
I am still furious I never went to that yard. Been to the new one. Saw the Red Sox lose to the Yankees in 2009 and the Yanks won the AL East.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Went to the great north to watch the Sox play in Minnesota in the last season before Target…made sure after the win to spit on the Metrodome as I exited
April 4th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
That was also in 2005, April game I think…I remembere watching while on a treadmill and thinking I was doing some superhuman feat since I was still going in the 7th inning
April 4th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
That honestly surprises me, especially since you’re more than halfway closer than I am, haha.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I saw an older-times game at old Yankee Stadium in 2004 against the Devil Rays. A-Rod hit a bomb that game too. I still have the commentortive (sp) pin from the game.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Old Yankee Stadium was a dump. The only game I went to, we sat in the bleachers, there was a trash compactor next to us that ran every inning, and my wife got yelled at by a security guard for wearing a Yankees Suck shirt. They made her turn it inside out. Surprisingly, the best part of the experience were the Yankee fans.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
My only one was Tigers-A’s in the 2006 ALCS. Crazy Milton Bradley homered twice, but the A’s fell short and ended up getting swept.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Game 7, the Boone home run, 20 rows behind home plate. Surreal.
I will never go to a greater sporting event than that.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
It really was. But it was so perfectly raw and rabid. That place was hostile and clinically nuts in the upper deck. I miss the atmosphere. It’s so much different now.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
It was, but it was also a great place to watch a game.
Vivid memory for me was I believe ’83 at the Stadium sitting down along the leftfield line when Ken Griffey Sr. made a tremendous catch scaling the wall just inside of the foul pole. That play was featured for years on TWIB.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
June, ’92. Red Sox-Mariners, Kingdome. “Getaway day” game. Griffey, Jr. hit a home run in the 1st. The Kingdome seemed small and dimly-lit, like playing ball in a living room. Bill Krueger got the win for the M’s.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
Same thing with the Vet. There are parts of Citizens Bank Park that are like the old 600 & 700 levels, but the crowds are so much more calm now. I really want us to boo our players when they played like shit.
I especially can’t wait to boo the hell out of Juan Pierre this year…
/Juan Pierre over Dom Brown…what the fuck?
April 4th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Can’t believe I haven’t been there yet when it’s so close. CBP still seems to get a pretty good crowd for big games. They were pretty awesome in the World Series against the Yanks. Hostile.
April 4th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
The best games are when it’s against rivals or other big teams. There was a game against the Giants a year or two ago when they smacked around Cain, and there was a huge “Overrated” chant. If you make it for TBL Philly, Phils-Red Sox is usually a great series.
April 4th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
When is TBL Philly? I’m off of 23 and 76
April 4th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Going to all three games this weekend in Texas. Still can’t believe Darvish doesn’t pitch until Monday. Go Rangers.
April 4th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
I am taking my 10 year old son to opening day.
April 4th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Tell Jake Peavy he sucks for me
April 4th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Can’t believe I forgot this one. I went to Boston’s opening day, 1990. I remember my dad took me out of school early so we could make it. Completely bad-ass.
