Damn, just switched from Dish TV to Atlantic Broadband 2 months ago. Got to switch to Direct TV now
/calls operator quickly.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:11 AM
the bizarre calculus of ER charges
In ’97 when my first wife went into ER with her heart attack, she was only there 12 hrs – the original bill was in excess of $20K, and I had TRICARE coverage. Bizarre.
Thankfully, I was able to negotiate it down.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:12 AM
Go beat up another 12 year old.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:13 AM
As an 11 year old who bought OJ’s book and proclaimed his innocence, I find this fascinating
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:16 AM
The moment that begat a legacy of losing for the Pirates.
Perhaps it was when Leyland tried to re-position Bonds in the OF before the play, and Bonds ignored the coaches. Had he done what they asked, he would have fielded that ball sooner. I forgot about the umpire fainting mid-game.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:18 AM
As an 11 year old who bought OJ’s book and proclaimed his innocence, I find this fascinating
What if that investigator’s premise is true? Seems odd to bring up this info now, other than the crass chase for profit.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:20 AM
The guy seems legit. Im just wondering what took him so long.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:24 AM
after getting a $150 bill last night from mf’ing Cox, I am going to consider other options like direct tv. what a crock of shit.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:25 AM
The guy seems legit. Im just wondering what took him so long.
See, I wonder also. I probably won’t buy the book, but if his research was true, and Simpson took blame and scorn for something his son did, that opens a whole new avenue of public perception, impact, legal ramification, etc.
Is it too late/legally impermissible to go after the son for those murders?
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:25 AM
Kate Upton in a commercial wearing a bikini.
great way to start the morning.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:26 AM
shit, was that real? and if so, where was it?
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:27 AM
I am going to consider other options like direct tv. what a crock of shit.
the only thing that sucks about DirecTV, and i’m not sure this is not true about other satellite providers, is that you sign a 2 year contract.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
I wouldnt think so but I doubt the LAPD and DA would want to open that can of worms again.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:30 AM
Independent thought from Whitlock??? Friends, I present to you, Jason Whitlock, a soothsayer in today’s world of uncertainty.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:31 AM
Kardashian took the knife and other evidence fom OJ after he landed back in LA. That entire family is pure garbage, trash if you will. As far as that author and his theory about OJ’s son…I would think that LA’s prosecutors and police detectives looked at all angles…oh crap, I’m laughing about that. They really bungled up that investigation and prosecution!
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:32 AM
I had Dish TV and I was signed on for a 2yr agreement. when I upgraded to HD and a DVR, they had sign up for 2 more yrs. Finally waited to the end of the contract and signed with AtlanticBB. Got my phone, TV and internet bundled together and saved about $30 a month. Plus increased my bandwidth speed.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:33 AM
I wouldnt think so but I doubt the LAPD and DA would want to open that can of worms again.
So, if the book is correct, effectively a guy got away with murder. Manoman, that is tough to hear.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:33 AM
Thankfully, I was able to negotiate it down.
Not sure how TRICARE was back in ’97, but these days your Catastrophic cap as a family if you are retired is only $3,000.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Like Dad said, we’re not shooting enough people.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Well, pretty much every person that has a functional brain has “independent” thought. Or, to look at it a different way, no one has independent thought since most people base their thoughts off of what they read/see/hear.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Psh, someone gets away with murder damn near every month in my city.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Kentucky wins. Votto gets extended. Anthony Davis is coming back for his sophomore season… Well, two outta three ain’t bad. Good ass night, last night.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:38 AM
For whomever asked, murder has no statute of limitations. But that story is pure fiction. The state committed about 1000 errors that led to OJ’s acquittal.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Not sure how TRICARE was back in ’97, but these days your Catastrophic cap as a family if you are retired is only $3,000.
Whew. That is a relief.
Tough part back then was the hospital sent me both bills for remittance and those advisory “this is not a bill” itemized statements for a time. No sooner than I sent them a check for a few thousand, another bill would come with more/different itemized charges.
The pisser was that she died at the end of that twelve hour ER stay. Back then, I had to ask the hospital billing folks, “ya didn’t actually save her life, and you’re still sending new bills 4, 5 months later?”
That process sucked. In the end, TRICARE came through, but it was a pain in the butt.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:38 AM
I had Dish TV and I was signed on for a 2yr agreement. when I upgraded to HD and a DVR, they had sign up for 2 more yrs. Finally waited to the end of the contract and signed with AtlanticBB.
when i moved, i had to make up this elaborate story about how i needed satellite service (DirecTV) for work purposes to avoid the $275 early cancellation fee.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:42 AM
My 3-day stay in the hospital including a brain scan and 1.5 days in the ICU = $0 (thanks union health care plan).
My wife had 1 non-preapproved test at her phhsyical = $319 bill.
When my infant son had a # of significant proceducres done, $0, but then the doctor didn’t get one specific fkind of tissue implant pre-approved by the insurer, so we got a $$$ 5-digits bill that we protested. Was not easy though and tough knowing your life savings is being threatened.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:43 AM
I think they are about to get AT&T u-verse in my neighborhood, but I remember someone on here yesterday saying it sucked. I’m also not a fan of watching tv through the internet. it sounds like they have me by the balls. the pisser is, I have called and bitched so many times, I doubt they will give me any more discounts. assholes.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:43 AM
no statute of limitations for murder, if they have the evidence they can charge him, try him and all that jazz.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:45 AM
Was not easy though and tough knowing your life savings is being threatened.
your stupid sick kid was threatening that insurance company’s stock dividends. Have some sympathy.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:45 AM
anyone have Verizon FiOS?

April 3rd, 2012 at 8:47 AM
I keep waiting for them to come digging in my neighborhood, but they havent made it here yet.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:47 AM
well, apparently you should have just kept him free of insurance and bought it on your way to have those procedures done, so you could get 100% coverage as the conservative supreme court judges argue is the best way to handle these situations of health insurance.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
and I assume ignore everyone else in the field because you have never heard of them?
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:48 AM
be careful hitting friends and family with wrestling moves
dang! me and my brothers were all notorious for using the living room as our own private squared circle.
Seems like the Cincinnati media likes the Joey Votto deal
No surprise. He’s really good and they locked him up. Any other deals they can make?
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:49 AM
where my wife and i used to live everyone had, as they said, “The Dish”. everyone hated it. They got it b/c they thought it was the same thing as DirecTV.
personally i love DirecTV. only other option where i am now is Comcast, and Comcast knows it, so they are really expensive. fuckers.

First of many, many Tiger Woods pieces you’ll read this week.
No real new info in there if you follow golf. A few minor pot-shots at Woods and some of the dumb fans at events.

let the free market decide how sick you are
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:52 AM
I do as well. I’ve had them for over 2 yrs now and have no complaints. Everytime I call them and ask them to lower my bill they always seem to find some discount to give me.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Wish I didn’t see that video of guy being robbed and punched, not a good way to start the day. WTF! Instantly makes me question everything. F#ck!
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:53 AM
I switched from Dish to Direct and have loved most of it. I like Dish’s DVR better. I really like the exclusicpve Direct TV channels. Besides if you call them once or twice a year to threaten to switch you can usually get free premiums from them for 3 months at a time.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Yes.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:55 AM
garbage.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:56 AM
we were in the hospital for 4 days when our daughter was born back in January. 24 hours of that was a NICU stay for the little booger because she didn’t want to breathe after they cut her out. the itemized charges we’ve received so far amount to $31k. we’re doubly-insured so we should only owe a nominal amount, but I just know they’re going to make it difficult.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:56 AM
FUCK COMCAST.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:56 AM
Wish I didn’t see that video of guy being robbed and punched, not a good way to start the day. WTF! Instantly makes me question everything. F#ck!
i stopped it in the middle when i realized the players were in place. so horrible.

do they make you extend 2 years every time that happens?

Am I the only person who thinks Davis should keep the unibrow? He owns it.
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:59 AM
Clay, why did you pull your poor, adorable baby’s pants up to his nipples in that twitter pic?
April 3rd, 2012 at 8:59 AM
jeebus, man. what a nightmare.
Yeah, but you know how life goes. Everybody gets a turn.
I was so naive when it came to the business side of ER. I’m sure they were following their procedures, but to me it still seemed lacking in compassion.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:00 AM
Am I the only person who thinks Davis should keep the unibrow? He owns it.
He looks like Lurch. Definitely own that!
/don’t care as long as the ping-pong balls send him our way

i was trying to make him look like Abdullah the Butcher. He’s also holding a fork.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Oh. I’m unfamiliar with Abdullah the Butcher. I saw the fork. He has a look of terror on his face. Probably due to your pasty white arms.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:02 AM
He looks horrified that his father made such a fashion choice
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:03 AM
So, nobody’s shocked that the team with 6 NBA players won last night… right?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:05 AM
I feel like I say this every year now, but that was the least exciting March Madness Ive ever seen.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:06 AM
the last time I called Cox and bitched, they reduced my bill $10. that $10 charge was for an installation fee, and I installed the shit myself, and they acted like they did me a huge favor. seriously, fuck cable companies.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:07 AM
After you and Spencer broke up, I can’t even imagine the additional emotional drain of having to deal with that contract mess.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Nope. However, I just bought a new TV and I’m afraid that they might make me when I call and ask for a new HD reciever.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
I told them to shove it in late February. Canceled my triple bundle. Bought a Roku and antenna and subscribed to Hulu Plus (already had Netflix). I got U-Verse internet (slightly slower speed but still plenty) for $30/month for the first year. Over the next year, I’m saving about $90/month.
When I called Comcast to cancel everything, they only offered me $10 off of my internet bill to stay with them, which left the cost still at double what I got from AT&T.
They suck.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:08 AM
I was more shocked that world wide wes didn’t make an appearance on stage to hold the trophy.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:10 AM
After you and Spencer broke up, I can’t even imagine the additional emotional drain of having to deal with that contract mess.
it was rough on the kids.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:11 AM

April 3rd, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Next time Cablevision calls to sell me something, I going to ask them to provide HBO Go and the NFL Network. Don’t bother calling me otherwise.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:12 AM
there’s no competition for cable, internet or phone in my area. it’s terrible. i have directv and comcast for internet. i still have to use comcast internet to connect to directv’s ondemand service, and i need comcast internet for my VOIP phone service.
when i moved into the area i tried to negotiate lower fees with comcast and they basically said, tough shit, this is our price. take it or don’t have internet.

The Slide: The moment that begat a legacy of losing for the Pirates. Really enjoyed this.
What I’d expect a Yankee/Lakers fan to write.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:14 AM
I’m really happy I’m doing that as well. When I called Direct TV to cancel, they tried to keep me around by reducing the package I would get (No FX), and give all sorts of temporary discounts that I would have to call back every 6 months to a year and try to get again. I said I’d pass.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Yeah, Comcast blows. It’s been two years since the FCC ordered them to allow Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia on Directv. Still nothing. It’s been 4 months since I read they finally came to an agreement with ESPN to allow their users to use the Watch ESPN app. Still nothing.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:14 AM
I did the same thing. There are some things I wish I had but the fact that I’m paying roughly $30/mo instead of $180, I’m happy.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:16 AM
I left my goddamn phone in the car. This sucks.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Finally found a use for my iPad at the office
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:18 AM
I’ve got Direct TV and Verizon Internet in my house. I have four roommates which makes the cost less than 30 bucks a month for me, so I can live with that. The Verizon Internet sucks balls though, and will cut out eveyr now and then.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:18 AM
And if he had? Then we know for certain the trophy is tainted? Or does it solidify that Shabazz, Nerlens Noel, and whoever else wants to come win another championship next year will be on campus in the fall, right? Until Cal chokes agai…. wait. He didn’t choke last night? Almost choking isn’t the same thing as choking. Right?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I read the Whitlock article. He takes some bold (missed) flourishes early but he ties things together much better at the end. I liked it overall.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I know I shouldn’t laugh, but I found this quote funny:
“Arceneaux’s girlfriend tried to revive him with CPR.”
Do you think she was 7 minutes away and they called her to perform CPR …
“You do it. I’m not doing it. Let’s get Susie – yeah, she’ll do it.”
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
The only reason I haven’t cancelled my cable is that my older one needs his science and military channel fix, and my younger one needs his Fox Soccer Channel.
/about that mobile site?

Seriously. People who do those type of things deserve to be captured and mentally beaten into submission until they shit themselves.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I have four roommates
weird. Do you live in a giant rented house? Do you have your own bedrooms? Are any of them slutty girls?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
yay for monopolies!
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
You can’t make this shit up.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:21 AM
Seriously though… everybody in Kentucky was thinking the same thing when Kansas cut the lead to 5 and had the ball. And then Kidd-Gilchrist makes that block on Taylor. I loved that he apologized to Cal in the post game presser saying he was sorry for getting beat on the back cut.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Yes, incredibly huge, each floor has it’s own kitchen and bathrooms. Yes, it’s a 5-bedroom house. One is, but she has a boyfriend that helps her with that sluttiness.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM
nice setup.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:22 AM
You can expect David Lohr, the writer of the HuffPo article you linked, to start popping up as the new expert, standard-bearer for this theory. I spoke to him for 10 minutes once and, with no other knowledge than that, Nancy Grace had him do an hour that night as the featured expert.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:23 AM
It’s videos like this that prompt states to make stand your ground laws.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:23 AM
so, is there going to be a post for the unveiling of the Nike NFL uni’s today?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:24 AM
Dude, just enjoy the title while it hasn’t been vacated.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Bingo. Love having that extra cash, as the new baby is essentially eating all of it. The wife and I agreed that our lifestyle cut would be not being able to watch Food Network.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Man bites off bartender’s finger
reasonable response.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:26 AM
So how do you watch say, an NBA game on TNT? I wouldn’t mind telling Comcast (xfinity!) to cram it, but live in fear of being denied something I want to see.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Wouldn’t it be pretty crazy if it was never vacated? Just a thought.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:26 AM
last time i drove through Fort Ann there was at least two PSA billboards for Meth Addiction within 5 miles of each other. that is one shitty, shitty town.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
That was fucked up. That white kid looked drunk or really fucked up on drugs, and totally caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can’t believe that went down on a city street. I hope there were witnesses so those animals will get arrested.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:28 AM
There’s nothing stopping other companies from coming in and setting up a new cable company. You just need a large fortune to install that much cable from central locations to houses, and to have uplink stations.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Joey Votto should have gone home to Canada. He’ll never win anything in northern Kentucky.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:29 AM
They deserve to have been shot and/or killed for that.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Yes, it actually would be quite crazy if it’s never vacated. Because the only people who aren’t certain this will eventually happen all root for Kentucky.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Weird. How can the home owner make any money off that type of set up?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
Exactly. I’d be happy with that Roku thing and antenna for my local channels, but will I get living sports events on TNT? How about the History Channel? NBATV? MLB Network? Does it include DVR?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:30 AM
No Food Network? What about HGTV?
/could be deal breakers
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:31 AM

Drunks throw dwarfs now? What the fuck is wrong with people? It’s 9:30 in the morning and there are about 5 people I want eating out of a tube for the rest of their lives because of this roundup.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:32 AM
what is that app called? I can’t find it.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:32 AM
How the hell did that guy even end up there? Where are his friends? You hit the nail on the head with the wrong place wrong time comment. Jeez…
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:32 AM
He didn’t pay anything for the house. His father-in-law built it and gave it to him and his daughter as a gift.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
Not an NBA fan, but I see your point. Generally, you have to give up watching your local team. Even with the NBA league pass or MLB.tv through Roku, the home market is blacked out. Thankfully, I prefer the radio guys for the Twins, Gopher hockey or the Wild so I’m not at that much of a loss.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
yeah, which is a problem for consumers. it’s not really a “monopoly”, but comcast sure acts like it in my area since there’s zero competition.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
I find that watching the Food Network is directly responsible for me overspending on food. Maybe it is a good thing not to have.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:33 AM
He just looked totally out of place and confused. I’m not sure he was even scared because he was probably too fucked up to know what was really going on. But, yeah, no friends or helpful bystanders? Fucking mob mentality.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:34 AM
What do you have against honest work for little people?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Spoken like a true Cubs fan!! Haha!! I know we talked about this last week, but with Fielder Pujols now out of the NL Central, the Reds should at least be playing for division titles year in and year out for the foreseeable future.
But then again, as a Bengals fan, I said the same thing when we locked Carson Palmer up to an extension.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Most of the History Channel shows are on Hulu and/or Netflix. Live sports is tough but you can buy the NBA and MLB packages thru the Roku. These events are also available on ESPN3.
The tough thing is getting FX and AMC shows instantly. We buy Justified by episode thru Amazon Prime for $2 and episode. It’s not ideal but it’s better than paying $180/mo to watch Justified, Mad Men, and a few sporting events that I could probably do without.
College Football is going to be the real test though.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
I learned a lot in college. one thing I wish I had learned earlier was, don’t bang one of your roommates, she’ll probably end up crazy.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:35 AM
Yeah but I’m sure there is a ton of upkeep and maintenance costs, not to mention property taxes. Plus it sounds like it’s a bunch of college kids living there so I’m sure it’s a shit hole.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:36 AM
The Masters
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:36 AM
I’m OK with missing my Pistons, but I’m just talking NBATV in general. I like the studio discussions and random games every night. I can keep my MLB.tv on my laptop, so that’s OK.
But do you get the network games? Like TNT’s Thursday doubleheaders and spring playoff schedule? How about Science Channel? Cartoon Network?

“Baseball needs a salary cap more than ever,” said no one.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
This logic always makes me laugh. Guys are morons.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:37 AM
No DVR. My only sports I “have” to watch during the year are MLB, CFB, NFL, and golf. CFB is easy because I usually watch it with friends at bars or we rotate houses (not mine anymore). NFL I just can’t watch MNF, which will only suck when the Bears are on. For MLB I am getting MLB.TV premium (can watch up to 4 games at a time on my computer or Roku). I don’t care about watching Braves games (Cubs fan). Golf I can watch on CBS/NBC on the weekends. I don’t need to watch during the week as I’m at work anyway.
Does the NBA have any streaming services like MLB and NHL?
Just do your research before you cut the cord. I think you need to go in with an open mind that you can’t get everything you want for much much cheaper. You have to make some sacrifices. In my situation the sacrifices were well worth the money.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
NDub, how did your apartment search go? Any luck?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Just shitting on your favorite team for fun.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Where do you get your AMC shows? I can’t miss my Mad Men or Breaking Bad. Or even The Walking Dead come October (I know, I know).
ESPN isn’t on there, so no college football?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 AM
So after an especially draining title run Calipari is ready for a vacation, amirite?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:39 AM
If I didnt want to watch sports in HD I’d have ditched cable long along. The companies know their time is limited with the rise of streaming services, so their next trick is going to be even more devious — bandwidth caps and jacked up rates for Internet.
Since they control the data pipe into the home, you’ll soon be paying $80-$100 a month for medium bandwidth. Worse, you’ll have no alternative (piracy, Netflix, Hulu) like you do now. You might as well just accept it.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:39 AM
No clue about NBA, as I am not a fan. As for Science Channel or Cartoon, no joy. Might be some older shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
I had the same thoughts, but in the end I was much happier to have $100 more in my pocket each month.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Not sure how the Roku works but I have the NBA.tv app on my iPad and AppleTV, and since I jailbroke it and spoofed my location I can watch every game. However there isn’t any studio analysis whatsoever.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Sounds like you should just stick with cable.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:40 AM
If you cancelled your triple bundle how do you get internet connection… its not with the antenna right?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:41 AM
We are not college kids. Everyone of the roommates is out of school and works a regular job. It’s a great house; wood floors, granite kitchen, all new appliances, and it has a huge yard for the dog, and a nice deck and fire pit area. Combined the rent is a little less than 3k a month. That covers maintainence and property taxes I would think. As long as he is willing to rent the nice ass house to us, I don’t care about how much profit he is clearing.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Is the show yours forever, or is that just to rent it?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Are we talking 40 texts a day crazy…..or burn your house down crazy?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:43 AM
It’s yours. I can download the episodes to my Kindle Fire and watch them there is I want to.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Over the air network channels are all digital HD these days.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:44 AM
So, are FOX sports links now something that gets caught in the filter? Because I can’t link Rosensquirrel’s story on how Josh Beckett is already hurt and we haven’t even played a game yet.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Read the next sentence!
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
So, when is Project X going down at Cleet’s house?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
You can watch instantly thru Amazon Prime (like iTunes) for 2 or 3 bucks an episode. It becomes an interesting study in economics as you really start to decide how much you really want to watch certain shows even though paying for them would still put you under the amount of what you were paying with cable.
There’s a cartoon network app for the iPad that you can use with your cable log-in. This is possible if you downgrade your cable to the most basic package only or if your cable company is also your ISP.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
you think Comcast blows? try Time Warner.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
I’ve never lived with a girl, but this rings true for next door neighbors as well. Made that mistake freshman year and never made it again. Until my last semester senior year.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Where do you get your AMC shows?
Team no cable here. I think a lot of shows get posted online on TUES. But often a show will only have the last 1-4 episodes available. Like last night AMC still hadnt uploaded the Mad Men episode.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:45 AM
That video is terribly disturbing.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Cable and cell phone companies are just giant pieces of shit.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:46 AM
What the hell is Lucas Glover doing at the Masters?
He needs his grizzly beard back.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:47 AM
This is no joke.
It’s been said on here before, but TV providers make their money off old people and women. My wife would rather pay DirecTV $70/month to be able to scroll through the channels than save the money and only stream the shows she wants.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Nope, it’s yours.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
and what do you do for phone service now?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Ha. With any luck, I’ll be moving in the coming months anyway. I will say the house is a redeeming quality for myself right now. Not thrilled with my job, don’t particularly like the area I live in, but it is a great place to come home to. Most of my roommates travel due to their jobs, one has a girlfriend whose place he stays at every night so it’s usually pretty empty.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Yes, I know you don’t care but what happens when you guys get older and decide you don’t want to live with roommates anymore? He’s going to have to rent it out again. I’m guessing a spot like that with tons of roommates will eventually get trashed from all the parties and lack of cleaning. It seems like an odd, unprofitable set up for a property owner. No offense to you and your 75 roommates and dogs, Cleet.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Sorry, I meant to say they get posted online 2 days after airing. So Sunday shows go up on TUES sometime.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Yeah but you can’t output them though, right, or pull them off the Fire? Can you download them to a computer hard drive and burn them to a BD?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Well, damnit. I suppose I’ve got some thinking to do. I’m moving in a few weeks and need to figure out who I want to provide my TV and Internet. Comcast has a sweet 12 month bundle deal for $90, but I’ve never liked their service and reading what others in here have said I know exactly how they feel about hating those bastards.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:49 AM
What the hell is Lucas Glover doing at the Masters?
Still living the dream after that US Open win at Bethpage.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Why would you want to do that?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:50 AM
All of this. I would love to cut that piece of shit channel Showtime, but my wife keeps starting up new shows on there, and for the most part, that network is shit. Even their porn sucks.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:51 AM
I really wish satellite and cable companies provided a la carte services for channels.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:51 AM
NDub nods in agreement.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:51 AM
I think you’ll also see Netflix move more and more into the TV arena (especially with instant shows) as they see this as a bigger opportunity than movies. This will only cause increased competition with Hulu which should be good for consumers.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:51 AM
And me. I pay Comcast $200 a month for my internet and TV bill. Good on you guys for saving money but I like to flip channels when a commercial comes on. I also like having HBO Go and a DVR. Personal preference. The extra money I pay is worth to convenience to me.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:51 AM
Same here. The only downside to streaming right now is quality. I like my Game of Thrones in 720p. Once streaming — and home networking infrastructure — develops to the point where 1080p quality content is no problem, we’ll drop cable.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:52 AM
I can only speak from experience but AT & T >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Comcast
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:52 AM
By the time that happens, LTE will be universal. You’ll have the phone companies competing with the cable providers. You can just stream through the air.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:52 AM
sportsgal/NDub – you two were recently sharing rental property websites or something…I’m looking at renting a house for a bit in the Nashville area. what sites did you guys use?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:53 AM
For someone whose favorite team plays in a park that pre-dates the Depression, it’s amazing that things like this take place in a baseball park now.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Vonage. Didn’t really save a ton of cash (maybe $6/month) but Comcast sucks. The only reason we didn’t cut the home phone entirely is because my wife is from Scotland and we make lots of international calls to her family. Much cheaper with a landline.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Because what if you want to watch them on something other than a Fire? Like, I dunno, a nice big LED TV with surround sound?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Yeah, it’s refreshing to know they’re producing original content, no matter if I watch it or not. Terra Nova actually tried to have Netflix pick it up for season two. Obviously that’d be a huge investment they couldn’t do quite yet. I hope that CEO pulls his head out of his ass, though, and gets Netflix back on track.
I’ve seriously been thinking about talking to her and trying to hit it one more time before I move.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Maybe I should have qualified the conversation by saying the owner is in the military, and currently has free housing on a military post for himself and his family, so he’s not paying that expense either. If and when the current roommates leave he will rent it to military families, or he will sell it. And we keep the place clean, as I said we are all adults in the house.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:55 AM
This was hard for me to get over as well. I’ve told other people that the good thing is that you don’t sit down and waste time trying to find something on. The bad thing is that you can’t just sit down and try to find something on.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:55 AM
The new stuff lately has sucked but Shameless is good and Homeland is awesome.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:55 AM
SG sent me to Trulia.com. It’s very helpful.
I’ve got horror stories about a crazy neighbor I banged a few times.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:55 AM
LTE isn’t optimal for video streaming large files. Neither is WiFi, frankly. Hard-wired connections are still vastly superior.
And even if it developed to that point, do you really think it’s going to be any cheaper than what cable companies charge?
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:55 AM
You should watch Shameless. It’s fantastic and right up your alley. Lots of sex, drugs and profanity. Good acting too. Also, Emmy Rossum’s boobies.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:56 AM
It makes the most sense, but they won’t do it while they can fleece everyone for their usual way of business. Maybe if enough people take the no cable rout like they have in this thread it will change.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:56 AM
I recommended Trulia and Zillow. Both are apps and/or websites if you don’t have an iPhone/iPad. Most of the rental properties are for a year or longer. If you’re looking for a vacation type rental you might not have the best luck there.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:57 AM
Yep, plus providers are paid by the networks to carry their channels. So as long as the networks keep filling DirecTV or Comcast’s pockets, nothing will change.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:57 AM
I think there’s a HUGE opportunity for this sort of thing especially. All of those shows that the networks couldn’t quite justify renewing could end up on Netflix/Hulu following the DirecTV model.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:58 AM
I get high and spend hours not watching stuff on netflix.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:58 AM
http://www.1channel.ch/?tv
Watched Mad Men and Game Of Thrones a couple hours after they aired. I would have had the devil sleeps so I thought I might as well stay up. Putlocker and Sockshare are usually the best links.
April 3rd, 2012 at 9:59 AM
All of this right here, except for me it would be ESPN as they own the CFB market, plus FX and HBO for their shows.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 AM
The one thing I have canceled entertainment-wise over the last year is Netflix. I simply didn’t use it enough. I might bring it back now because we took cable out of the bedrooms in my place. We just have the one cable box on the main TV in my living room. Might have to call a Netflix rep and haggle my way into a cheap rate.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 AM
But what happens when some of your current tenants leave and get replaced with hardcore 24/7 partiers???
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 AM
I’ve heard good things about that show. House of Lies though…..woof.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 AM
I think it’s a good idea in theory, but in some cases the shows that are cancelled have big budgets, but small ratings and thus advertising revenue to justify being carried by the network. I’m not sure Netflix can afford taking on such shows at the moment.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
go on…
seriously, I’m bored and procrastinating writing trip reports and filing a travel voucher.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
I thought it had to do with what the channels (ESPN and such) were charging the cable companies? So ala carte does not make financial sense for them maybe. Clearly it’s easier to knock stuff around in here than to do any actual research.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
Showtime is probably the most useless of the pay channels.
HBO
Cine/Skinemax
Starz
TMC
Showtime
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
I haven’t looked into this, but I know a guy who got a TV tuner for his computer and a large (3+) TB harddrive. He uses some software to DVR his shows through his computer and I believe he uses something with Windows Media Player to pump the shows through his TV. Works like a DVR.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
To my knowledge, if it airs on any of the ESPN nets, it will be on ESPN3, which works for me. But all of those games on BTN, FSN, VS, etc. That’s going to be tough.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:01 AM
No Bill Self, Choke Artist post?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:02 AM
I can’t check that link here at work because it’s blocked (streaming media). But thanks.
I pay $7.99 a month for streaming. I’m not sure how much you can haggle, but props if you do, man.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:02 AM
I have the first season of Homeland DVR’d but haven’t watched it because the wife isn’t interested. Is it something I should make her watch?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:03 AM
marry a guy that looks similar to me and buy a house 2 blocks away crazy. I’m not sure where that falls.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:03 AM
This is the future. You’ll get home, plug your phone into a jack for your TV, and have everything available to you.
The tech isn’t there yet, but it will be.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:03 AM
My roommate watches it. I’ve only seen like 15-20 minutes of it. Yeah, I didn’t think it looked like anything I’d like either. Shame, because I like Don Cheadle. I think he watches it for Kristin Bell.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:03 AM
Shameless is a show that I know is good and entertains me when I watch it, but I don’t look forward to watching it for some reason. I’ve stopped watching that show and Boardwalk Empire and I’m not quite sure why.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:04 AM
That’s a possibility. I won’t sit here and say it is Utopia, but I don’t plan on being here when the current lease runs out in July. The year I have lived there has been great, it’s not my worry what happens to it in the future. We drink, have people over, etc. but we always clean up after ourselves. We don’t live in an area where a bunch of college kids are going to rent the place as a party house.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:04 AM
HBO and Showtime are the only premium channels worth having because of their original programming. All the others are a complete waste unless you love the latest Adam Sandler movie.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:04 AM
I thought everyone here knew this story.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Exactly. There are too many good games on BTN, FX, FSN and so on that I want to watch. Plus, we pay $96 a month for two HD DVRs and have HBO. I’ve thought about cutting HBO after GOT ends, though. That would save $16.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:05 AM
Strikeforce and boxing. so, SHO is good for something.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:05 AM
What if a college is built around you, and all of your new tenants are big time partiers, though?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:05 AM
no shit, I don’t even recognize him without it.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:06 AM
As a lifelong Braves fan, this was the greatest baseball moment of my life.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:06 AM
5 year US Open exemption?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Have you given any thought to the possibility of White Flight?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:07 AM
Who’s your provider?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:07 AM
There are a couple of problems with this. One, you’d probably be paying a lot more than you are now because the channels you want would likely be expensive to justify the operating expenses. Bundled packages with lots of channels you dont want makes it possible to afford to ones you do.
Second, the pay-cable channels would go WAY up. HBO would be damn near $30 at market price. It’s relatively cheap now and frequently included in promos because cable companies know its a great hook into a bundled package. You’ll never see HBOGo as a standalone service because of this.
Put it this way — cable companies are actively lobbying to try and debundle channels. They wouldn’t be doing this if there wasn’t a ton of money in it.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Then I am going into the pot-farming business and will make enough money to retire early and buy my own house.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Homeland is awesome. Much better than Game of Thrones.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:08 AM
So my boss tells us on Friday that she and her family have had Masters passes for her entire life and she goes every year for the entire tournament and gets to go to all of the VIP parties and shit they have on site. I will now wear her down over the course of my time there for the hook up.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:10 AM
DirecTV. We’ve had them for about 7-8 years now. I’m incredibly loyal to them, to be honest. Not sure my wife is, but I have never had any issue with them in that time. So many people I know have, though. Maybe I’m lucky in that regard.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Speaking of sex and nudity on cable, there’s some new show on Starz that starts this weekend that looks promising. Can’t think of the name of it right now but it’s about some guy who starts up a hotel in Miami in the 60′s and has possible mob connections. At least I think that’s the plot. I just know it has lots of boobies and hot guys in suits.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:11 AM
I think she might have “burn your house down” potential. Keep an eye on that one.
You room with ATL_Badger?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:12 AM
You don’t watch Game of Thrones so how could you possibly make that statement? They’re both awesome for their respective genres.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:13 AM
I enjoy most of Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell’s work. And I love Jean Ralphio, but that shit is terrible. It’s not even so-bad-it’s-good.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:13 AM
My boss is in Augusta too. Not life time passes, but still. I’m rebelling by fucking off all week.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:14 AM
The ultimate dreamgal. Sharp and smart.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:14 AM
There would be a limit to how much they charge per channel, otherwise no one would buy them. They would also bundle channels together. The point I was making is that it would be nice to pay for what you want to get on your TV instead of one huge lump sum that includes channels you would never want to watch.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:15 AM
They have both been great so far. You really can’t judge a show overall until the 3rd season. Thats when you find out if the creator had a long term objective or if he is just going to jerk you around.
/SOA’d
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Kristen Bell is a saint. Looks great in a bikini too.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:16 AM
Everytime the whole cancelling cable TV comes up I’m consistently baffled at the inconvenience people are subjecting themselves to to avoid paying for an relatively low cost product.
If the idea is that you want to ween yourself off TV then by all means this sounds like a good strategy but if you actually do enjoy TV and sports then i have my doubts. unless part of the payoff is being able to say you don’t have cable.
Here’s 2 restaurant-based analogies
a) What if there was a restaurant where you pay for food by the bite, you calculate that it’d be cheaper than a regular restaurant based on you avg. bites per meal. I anticipate that even though over a long period of time you’d save some money you’re worse off due to the anxiety each bite generates.
b) If you could pay say $800 up front to convert you car to run on free restaurant waste oil would you? Probably not, its just a pain in the ass driving to McDonald’s for gas even if they’re always guaranteed to have it.
The idea here is that on a middle class income the price of food and gas in themselves are less of an issue than the convenience of acquiring them
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:16 AM
yeah, it’s been a couple years now so I think it’s died down. then again, every time I think that and I don’t hear from her for a couple months, I get a crazy “random” text. come to think of it, that time is coming around soon.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Just give him the Albom Lifetime Achievement Award for Who’s Paying Attention Anymore?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:18 AM
I’d rather have The Big Easy
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:18 AM
fixed
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:19 AM
i watch both and i’d agree with this if you give me a choice to watch one or the other.
this is partly b/c i’ve read GoT so i know what will happen, not much suspense, just a visualization of my imagination of the scenes and characters i like.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:19 AM
I really, really want to pick Gary Woodland as my Masters flier, but I don’t think he’s a good enough putter to justify it.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Magic City
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:20 AM
The better analogy would be having a monthly membership to a restaurant and you can eat as much as you want based on your membership vs just paying whenever you go.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:20 AM
I’m from a solidly middle-upper middle class family, but I would absolutely do this. But I’m young, convenience is more of an issue for older people.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:21 AM
id rather not see a repeat of that LPGA chick missing a 1-footer six holes per round…maybe we could just ask brad faxon to putt for ernie.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:22 AM
BTW, am I the only person who’s drawn up his a la carte TV channel line-up?
Homeland is awesome. Much better than Game of Thrones.
Different shows. Like comparing Breaking Bad with Mad Men.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:22 AM
i expected a lot more from him this year, but he’s going thru swing changes, i guess…kyle stanley is having the year i expected from woodland.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:23 AM
nope…golf channel, espn (for CFB), nfl network, nat geo, military, discovery, food, comedy central, FX, TNT, TBS and a bunch of HBO’s.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Yes. And I’m saying while that would be nice, you’ll probably be paying more for that privilege.
Let’s say I want HBO, FX, AMC, ESPN, and TNT (networks I’ll get OTA). Figure HBO is $30, FX/AMC/ESPN/TNT $10 each. So you’re dropping $70 bucks on five channels per month. Is that really any cheaper than how it works now for 500 channels you don’t want?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Jean Van de Velde
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Is this the ex you were sexting? The one you were egging on to send you a pic of her fat bags even though you have a girlfriend?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:24 AM
and here i thought you were an ernie fan? this can’t be serious…
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Has anyone ever tried the Orange Theory fitness Gyms? Its a pay as you go gym. Just curious.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:26 AM
It’s going to be rather ironic when TBL puts up the ratings post about how it’s down 9% from last year’s NCAA title game when the entire Roundup comments section is filled with people talking about how they watch their entertainment/sports programming on something that isn’t a television connected to a cable box.
And by ironic I mean redundant and archaic.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Yeah thats a better way to put it…. I was trying isolate the psychological stress of paying for a $10 meal at $0.25 increments vs. just dropping $15 and eating in peace.

This is off topic but the new Game Of Thrones episode just leaked.

This is not a drill.

A la carte will not be nearly as cheap as people think it is. ESPN would be $10-$15 bucks a month alone. The cable companies would love a la carte. You’re going to spend roughly the same amount I would bet.

It’s amazing how good our collective memories are around here. I was thinking the same thing. The one that was trying to get you to come over and bang her last summer, right?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:27 AM
shit no. and I wasn’t even provoking those texts, that was all on her. that was a different girl though. thanks for bringing it up on twitter the other day though!
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:27 AM
If you are setting these hypothetical prices for channels, than no.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:28 AM
it’s going to be even more ironic when the masters ratings destroy the NBA finals’ and world series’.

Damn!! Is nothing sacred?

I have an HD TV for a reason.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I think it’s fair game to compare shows even thought hey are different genres. what makes those shows good isn’t the subject matter, it’s the writing, directing, acting, set design, storylines, etc. that can all be compared objectively between shows regardless of genre.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:29 AM
This guy gets it. The cable companies aren’t spending millions to lobby for de-bundling legislation because it will help us out, guys.
Yes, they are hypothetical, but if anything I erred on the cheap side.

I don’t doubt that. The Masters is must viewing even for many of us who are not golfers. If I were forced to rank the yearly sport events in how much I HAVE to watch them, the Masters would be right up there.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:31 AM
frankly, i have no problem spending the same amount i have now on less channels. my problem is with my money going to fucking asshole channels like E! and the fashion network and H&G tv. fuck that shit.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Is that really any cheaper than how it works now for 500 channels you don’t want
In my world, it’d work like this: You pay $30 for 25 basic cable channels — so you can have your History, TNT, AMC, FX, etc. You pay another $10 for sports channels like ESPN, Fox Soccer, NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA. HBO/Showtime remain their usual big money selves.
End result: a bill of about $50 for what you want.

He wouldnt do that, he likes college basketball.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:34 AM
especially when that shit takes up 50% of my dvr space thanks to my wife’s series recordings she never watches.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Still you are talking about a possible scenario in the future that may or may not happen. Are you a lobbyist? And if your worst case scenario did happen then couldn’t one just got right back to direct tv?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:36 AM
I’d rather have The Big Easy
No way. If you are world class, you have a 14-15 ways to qualify for the Masters, some skewed to 2-year performance. Plus, he said he’d decline a last minute invite. I like Ernie but earn your way in, accept what they give, or STFU.

I keed, I keed
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:38 AM
About $5 of your cable bill already goes to ESPN alone. By going a la carte, they are going to lose subscribers and would thus jack up the rate to probably $15 for ESPN alone and $20 if you want the other ESPN nets.
You also have to factor in the loss of ad revenue with fewer subscribers.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I never made the assumption that cable companies were not out for more money. I was strictly speaking Perfect World scenario by which you pay a nominal fee for only the channels you wanted. I don’t expect anything in any walk of life to get cheaper.
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:41 AM
When are Mexicans overtaking White people again, 2040?
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:43 AM
so you’re saying that mexicans that can’t afford TV’s are going to be hired by country clubs to landscape and usher in the second incarnation of golf’s golden age?
AWESOME!
/unbelievably racist’d
April 3rd, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Oh, I didn’t realize that you bringing it up on the Internet meant it couldn’t be brought up on Twitter. I doubt either girl follows me so I’m sure you’re in the clear.

I was so excited when I finally got HD cable that included the Golf Channel. NOw, I won’t even watch their live tourney coverage. Two weeks ago, it was The Tiger Woods Show every second of live air. After he finished the second round, and there were others still on the course and high on the leaderboard, they cut away fron live coverage to have two guys talk about Tiger. Then they showed about half an hour of Tiger hitting balls at the range. While others on the leaderboard were still coming in.
I know, Tiger = ratings, but fuck it, when I watch a tournament, I want to see golf, not just Tiger.
