NCAA Tournament Final Draws 12.1 Nielsen Rating, Down Nine-Percent From 2011
Last night’s NCAA Tournament Final drew an overnight rating of 12.1, a nine-percent drop from 2011′s UConn vs. Butler. This was roughly on par with the tournament’s overall 6.6, an eight-percent decline, though the Final Four Saturday games performed significantly better, about even with last year. Final ratings likely dipped because the game started at 9:30 ET and it never was competitive.
For some perspective, the Final drew a ratings share higher than the first five games of the 2011 World Series, the first four games of the 2011 NBA Finals and every college football bowl game except the BCS Championship.

@KingGrizz If you’re here. We played Black Diamond last year for my buddy’s bachelor party. It’s got everything but a fucking clowns mouth. Probably the most frustrating golf course i have ever played. Bring plenty of golf balls and try not to harm an Amish kid when you get pissed.

Why it started at 9:30 I’ll never understand. I turned it off at halftime; it was the least compelling Final I can remember.
April 3rd, 2012 at 11:56 AM
How many of those were on broadcast tv? Also, the roundup conversation proves these ratings are useless.
April 3rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
so ratings are down in seemingly every sport other than the NFL…im taking this as a sign of cultural progress.
April 3rd, 2012 at 11:57 AM
You forget about last year’s shit show? 22-19 at halftime or some shit like that. Give me athletic freaks over Hoosiers any day of the week.

Haha, I was wondering how this post got approved until I came across this shot. Bravo.

For even more perspective, the World Series was competing with new primetime programming and the bowl games were on cable. Looks like the tourney is a money-losing sieve just like the Olympics.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll probbaly be liquid most of the day anyways and I’m sure we’ll play some sort of scramble game. Appreciate it.

options.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:00 PM
This. And for even more perspective, the World Series was 1,000x more compelling.

Did you guys bring booze and just hang out at the cabins? I cant imagine there being much to do in Millersburg, Ohio

Internet.
Segmentation.
Who gives a fuck?
Internet again.
Who really gives a fuck?
Does that cover it?

The N. Carolina-MSU game was less compelling. The UConn-Butler game was uglier.

Duffy’s turn to write the RATINGS post?
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:08 PM
So the game that decided the MLB title had a 13.8 overnight and the game that decided college hoops had a 12.1

The NCAA needs to move the Final Four to a Thursday/Saturday format. Hardly anyone but the two teams involved give a shit about the game on a Monday night.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Ben, keep your honey bees away from this pesticide.

Duffy’s turn to write the RATINGS post?
I have noticed that JMac is farming out his typical posts. Yesterday he had CRM writing about athlete girlfriends. I have also noticed considerably fewer posts out of JMac. He must have some new behind the scenes responsibilities at USA TODAY/FSV/THEBIGLEAD.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:11 PM
This. And the College football championship needs to move off Mon. Night as well.

Whenever people talk about ratings my mind immediately goes to this Onion article:

Two big name schools and the ratings are down? Is this the end of college basketball?
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:17 PM
We went into town about 10 minutes away but pretty much brought all our own booze. Of course we ran out and had to make a put stop. The cabin is a pretty cool set up. Right on the course. Wake up and tee box one is right out your front door. It’s a cool set up. It’s a ridiculous course. We played a scramble and i don’t want to fathom what my score would have been if we didn’t.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:17 PM
And yea we just hung out at the cabins, there’s not shit to do down there.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:18 PM
love the ratings down narrative. zmog! college hoops only beat 5 WS games and 4 NBA finals games and every bowl game but one … but ratings are down year to year!
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:20 PM
I’m so boooooooooored.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Honest question. How many times have you used the “ratings are down year to year” as an opening to “bury” a sport?

April 3rd, 2012 at 12:23 PM
love the ratings down narrative
yes, yes you do.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:23 PM
So when it’s a sport you actually watch, you don’t care about ratings, but when it’s the 10 other sports that you only see clips of ratings mean something?

It’s pretty clear that if you like a sport with declining ratings like NCAA hoops, it makes you less of a man.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Combine an early, beautiful spring (global warming and all, you know?) with year-round little-league baseball for my kid and I watched very little basketball this year.
I need to get a TV on the deck or patio.

It’s like rain on your wedding day.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:37 PM
You know those rating systems are flawed. They don’t take into account houses that have more than two television sets and other things of that nature.
April 3rd, 2012 at 12:53 PM
The course is BYOB. That, with all you can golf, leads to cases, Jack, Jim, and Cuervo in carts at all times.
April 3rd, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Not what I meant by compelling. At least last year I had a rooting interest. This year the game wasn’t close and I’ve never hated 2 championship teams more since MSU played Florida in 2000.
April 3rd, 2012 at 2:36 PM
I guess I have to take you at your word, No. 2. You have a great day, fellas!
