Reds Sign Joey Votto to Massive 10-Year $225 Million Extension
Joey Votto will not have to worry about feeding his family for the foreseeable future. He has signed a 10-year $225 million contract extension with the Cincinnati Reds, becoming the third first baseman to break the $200 million barrier this offseason. The deal will start in 2014 and extend through the 2023 season.
Votto, 27, has hit .313/.405/.550 since debuting for the Reds in 2007, averaging 28 home runs per season. He was the 2010 NL MVP. Votto doesn’t quite bring the power of fellow $200 million men Pujols or Fielder, but he’s neither 31 nor portly. File this with the Matt Cain deal under “get this done before the Dodgers come after him.”

And baseball is trouble? Am I right?
Oh, and still don’t understand why any athlete wouldn’t go into baseball. Massive guaranteed contracts. Average salary = $3.2 million

Exactly, but I don’t know how they’re going to afford anything else now in Cincy, unless they’re raising the payroll.

TV Rights up for extension in 2016 (as per Fangraphs).

Thanks man. I just read they only get $10 mil per year right now. You have any site that shows how much each team is making through their TV contracts?

I don’t know of any that have that, but the Fangraphs recent posts on Organization Rankings has had some figures.

I was thinking the same thing when I read about both players.

Cole Hamels is just aching to be in Dodgers Blue if the Giants and Reds are willing to throw around this kind of money.

The Sox signing of Gonzalez to 7 years $154 mill deal looks great. Just too bad Theo had to open Henry’s checkbook for a few free agents instead of making great trades like he did for Gonzalez.

I’m kind of shocked on how quickly the media has decided that team is dead in the water. Sure the Rays have pitching and the yankees have a good offense, but outside of those last few weeks the Red Sox were on pace to win 100. The loss of Francona, Varitek and Papelbon mean that much?

I hope all the writers for TBL remember this contract extension, along with McCutchen’s contract, Longoria’s contract, Matt Moore’s Contract, the A’s getting Cespedes, and the Reds getting Chapman….next time they want to argue baseball needs a salary cap.
Before harping on a salary cup, look at the six years of team control structure. It does a lot to improve competitive imbalance…like enable extensions like this one.

Shat, I agree. Let the sleep on them. They had 2 bad weeks to open the year and end the year. If they play .500 ball they are in the playoffs. Gonzalez and these guys are still nasty. I am just worried about Bailey now.

Wow, .955 career OPS? Thought it was much lower. Impressive.

Awesome, they’re going for it for the first time since Griffey!

Joey Votto is going to pissed when he finds out this was an April fool’s joke.
Seriously this is a joke right? Joey Votto is NOT $22M over the next 10 good.

Prince Fielder .282/.390/.540
Joey Votto .313/.405/.550
Better fielder, hitter, and baserunner. Risky deal, but not as risky as Fielder’s.
