Iowa Expects You To Believe Kirk Ferentz Played No Part in Hiring His Son
Iowa hired 28-year-old Brian Ferentz, son of Kirk, as its offensive line coach from a pool of 102 applicants and paid him $15,000 more than the other assistant the school hired, linebackers coach LeVar Woods. Ferentz the younger is a legitimate offensive line coach (fresh off employment with the Patriots), though this hiring has come under scrutiny, since it blatantly violates a university policy against nepotism.
The football program devised a cunning ruse to skirt this issue, trying to convince us head coach Kirk Ferentz played no role whatsoever in the hiring process and will not be his son’s boss during his tenure at Iowa. Placing your offensive line under the independent purview of the athletic department is clearly standard operating procedure at a major college football program.
Athletic director Gary Barta has said it was his decision to hire Brian Ferentz, he will act as his supervisor and that Kirk Ferentz recused himself from the interview process.
This entirely plausible narrative was, alas, thwarted unintentionally, by comments from Brian Ferentz himself.
Brian Ferentz said he had spoken about the job with his dad and took it because “you can’t say no to your father.”
We’ve no beef with Kirk Ferentz spreading the benificence of his personal fiefdom. This is Division I-A football. University policies are intended for mortals. Furthermore, this is Kirk Ferentz’ Iowa. Let them progress through an entire offseason with neither a massive drug scandal nor a rash of hospitalizations before holding them accountable for procedural malfeasances. Baby steps.

This is now on the front page of yahoo. You go, Mr Lisk. All you had to do to get notoriety was to write about Tim Tebow, who knew?

Is it too early to label 2012 the summer of Lisk?

I dunno, pretty odd for a head coach not to have anything to do with a hiring on his staff so even if you take him at his word it might shine some light on why Iowa stinks of mediocrity
March 31st, 2012 at 4:50 PM
I thought the stench coming from Iowa was more of a burned baking soda kind of a smell? Because they are drug dealers and users, you see
March 31st, 2012 at 4:51 PM
The way Ferentz gets treated you would think he has won eleventy national championships.

If FBS football coaches want to tank their own careers with nepotism, more power to ‘em. (See: Hawkins, Dan)

Is there anywhere we can actually see Lisk on NFL Live? Would ESPN let you post something like that on this site?

Damn it, Lisk. Let us know when you are doing radio/tv. I want to be the guy that can say, “Yeah, I knew Lisk back when TBL was paying him $15 for a post that took four hours to write because of all the stats.”

Ouch.

Clearly he had an unofficial part, but for appearances they are saying he didn’t. If he is, as the post states, a “legit offensive line coach” and came from coaching the Patriots, perhaps he deserved to be paid more than another assistant hired at the same time, though I admittedly know nothing about LeVar Woods. He was the blind guy in Star Trek, right?

Heh. Why ouch? I just meant for copyright/re-broadcast reasons

Yes. And you are a racist for tacitly accepting Iowa’s racist pay scale.

you couldn’t “see” it, because he was on the telephone. It was pretty good. Probably available at the pod center or something. He didn’t make a fool of himself, at all.
He sounded a little countrified, but not too bad.

Seems to me that the policy is the problem, not the hiring of Kirk’s son. Given that he’s a legitimate football coach with a coaching resume, there should be no issue. There was no issue when Frank Beamer hired his son Shane at Virginia Tech, and there should be no issue here. If this hiring violates Iowa’s policy (or if Ferentz and the athletic department have to construct plausible deniability out of whole cloth), then the policy needs to be revisited.

Lisk has gone out of his way in the past to make himself seem like a fat slob who rarely wears matching clothing and hasn’t owned a watch since his Casio broke in 1997. So it’s disappointing that I can’t see anywhere on the internet what such a person looks like.

anyone got a link to Lisk on NFL live?

I sent an email to the producer who contacted me and haven’t heard back. Worst case scenario, if no other copy shows up anywhere, my wife recorded it and I can go load it on youtube with my iPhone. Worst they can do is make me take it down.

When I get talking, I revert to my combination of having lived in Missouri and Houston.

False. No way I owned a Casio in 1997.

He looks like a normal person. Which is odd, because that is how his online presence seems to be. Rarely shall the twain meet.

There was no issue when JoePa hired his son. Well aside from the issue where he was terrible at his job yet faced no chance of being replaced.
I watched Lisk. Was hoping for a picture but didnt happen. Overall very good, stumbled a few times and got a little stat nerdy but got a “good job Jason” from Herm. Score.

I’ve seen a picture of Lisk and his wife. While Lisk is normal looking midwestern guy, he really out-kicked the coverage in getting his wife.

Issue is not Ferentz hiring his son. That’s fine. Just the lie about it was incredibly lame.

Mea culpa.

Agreed. And if this was a job at a Fortune 500 company, then it would probably get greater attention…oh wait, I guess that happens too.
Could Ferentz have been less obvious? Sure. Is this really that big of a deal? No, not really.
