National FOX Sports Network May Not “Rival” ESPN, But Has Pieces To Be Formidable
News Corp. is jumping into the national sports network game. Bloomberg reported that Fox is converting FUEL into a new sports network to “rival ESPN,” or, more likely, butt NBC and CBS’ sports networks aside for second-place. Viewers may stay to be trolled by Skip Bayless, but they come to sports networks for the sports. Here, FOX is a little bit better placed than NBC or CBS.
Importantly, FOX has football, not just football in name but football people might actively seek out. FOX has second-tier rights with the Big 12 locked down through 2025 and a share of the Pac 12 rights through 2024. FOX is already a business partner with the Big Ten on the Big Ten Network. If they were to win the conference’s first-tier rights in 2016, that would put them on equal if not better footing than ESPN in college football.
Fox also has soccer, more valuable soccer moving forward than MLS. They have the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and, consequently, the USMNT and USWNT for those cycles. They have the UEFA Champions League through 2016 and, presumably, won’t give up the Premier League without a fight. Using those properties to build a national sports network would explain why Fox has been pushing soccer on the broadcast network.
Will Fox or any network “rival” ESPN? Probably not. ESPN has Monday Night Football, college football, MLB and the NBA. A-list leagues want more rather than less of their product on the network. Owned by Disney and fleecing every cable subscriber in America, ESPN’s hegemony is underpinned by a lot of money. It will be hard for any of the networks to “rival” ESPN. What they can do is plan well, pick their spots and capitalize on ESPN’s resources being stretched, as Fox did with the World Cup.

Great line, Duffy

I really hope Al Jazeera wins the EPL rights in the UK, that could throw everything into a tailspin for Sky/NewsCorp.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
FWIW, Fox also has live UFC cards with a full-court press in pre- and post-fight analysis.

Here’s the only thing I care about… if this new channel starts “nationally” televising baseball games will that affect the MLB blackout rules?
March 30th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
THis entire paragraph makes me so sad. Soccer was much better off at ESPN.

I imagine it will be the same as what happens when Fox has your favorite team on Saturday
March 30th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
I care when they have ANY team on Saturday. They get 3 games every Saturday and if I want to watch the Phillies, Yankees or whoever else instead of the White Sox, I feel I should be able to. If they start pulling baseball games, especially during the week, I’m going to be pissed.

i happened to catch NBC Sports hightlight show the other night- it wasnt too damn bad. just highlights and brief analysis.

Just give me the Top 5 at a reasonable hour!
March 30th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
What a novel fucking concept. Instead I’d rather see “Who’s Now,” while they put a montage of clips up with the newest shitshow from Jennifer Lopez bumping on the 10s and 20s.
/ESPN sucks my ass save for live sports
March 30th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
it’s sad when we applaud those who do it the way you’re supposed to do it.
ESPN will be fucked if there’s ever an a la carte option for TV, no way people pay for it once they see how much it costs individually if they don’t watch the channel.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
So am I the only one that sees no purpose whatsoever to the Top 5?

That’s what you SUPPOSED to do!

The EPL bidding is going to be really interesting, especially with Al Jazeera launching a network and already having the Serie A and La Liga rights.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
i find it interesting that the method previously used to increase exposure to the national audience is now the bane of most sports fans due to the terrible announcing/presentation/black out rules.
all sports would be better off embracing the new media and dropping blackout rules.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
I want a la carte in a bad way, but I’m too big of a CFB fan to not have ESPN. The only way I would ever quit ESPN is if they dropped CFB or lost it to another network.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Though I suppose I could drop ESPN the moment CFB stopped and then pick it back up again in the fall.

If there was a la carte cable pricing, 2/3rds of the channels would cost zero cents, and another sixth would cost a nickel. ,Espn would charge 20 bucks per subscriber, per month, and still make plenty of money,
I’m all for this new sports channel, as long as it comes on basic cable. even though I have sports tier already.

i would be on board for that. but as husker pointed out, it would be tough to not have access to CFB, even if the best games are on ABC and CBS.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
The Top 5 is the quintessential blog post. Tits, laughs, open thread commenting rules. Most importantly, nothing about ratings.

March 30th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
the only thing keeping me to ESPN is MNF, and i’m not really sure it’s worth the $7-$13 it costs now for possibly watching 1-2 games.
I think newsweek had an article on how the cost has skyrocketed for ESPN since 2003.. coincidentally that’s when they started doing all their Coors Light Cold Hard Facts, Budweiser Hot Seat, Cold Pizza, etc.

TBL: greg norman? this is TBL and i wanted to ask you a few questions.
shark: g’day mate.
TBL: is this a knife?
shark: that’s not a knoife…this is a knoife.
TBL: solid opinion, bud.
shark: oh bugger off you fuckin’ loon.
TBL: so why did you break it off with chris evert after ruining the marriage between her and your best friend?
shark: LOFT.
TBL: loft?
shark: lack of fucking talent.
TBL: so…send pics of your dick to anyone?

Not sure how he complements McFadden, but I liked him at A&M…thought he’d be a better pro.

This is awesome. Mitch Hedberg was so funny
March 30th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
It’s an idea I’ve been crying out for for years, as ESPN’s fallen off the cliff quality-wise. They need a rival, an upstart to challenge them.
Fox has the NFL, soccer, UFC, CFB, MLB’s Saturday game of the week/World Series. That’s a good base. The trick is to provide quality programming around the sporting events — not just Opinions Shouted By Old Men followed by The Same Story You’ve Been Hearing All Day Retold 100 Different Ways – Center.
My fear is that given how Fox has done FSC and Speed, they tend more towards the tacky, lame and second-rate. For it to succeed, you need something of higher quality.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
well done sir. LOFT is one of my most used words on the golf course.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
The funny this is, if TBL had a good sense of humor he would totally do cold call Monday’s. That shit would be the most anticipated post each and every week. Hell, let Hernia do it and it would be even better.
First up, Paul Mitchell.

ESPN will be fucked if there’s ever an a la carte option for TV, no way people pay for it once they see how much it costs individually if they don’t watch the channel.
This seems wrong. People would more likely buy ESPN and then figure the rest of their a la carte lineup around that. You pay less for ESPN right now than you do for HBO, it just seems like a worse deal because it’s hidden
March 30th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
That’s because every home is charged for it…if you remove it as mandatory, it will get jacked up 4X+ for the a la carte.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
I don’t understand how anyone thinks a la carte pricing will make that much of a difference… The cable providers may give you a la carte pricing but it will have to be revenue-neutral for them. I doubt anyone will let you opt to watch just Bravo Network for $0.53 per month. The fixed cost of getting service will be pretty steep.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Good point.
March 30th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
and then when no one buys it at 4x the cost, the price will go down.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
But people would buy it. They’d pay $15-$20 a month for it.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
and then when
no oneonly 65% of America buys it at 4x the cost, the price will go down.the profitability of the company will increaseMore likely
March 30th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
not nearly as many people as the $100million or so cable subscribers that are paying for it and not watching a minute of programming on it.
a la carte will likely never happen unless someone like Apple releases a streaming internet TV with a la carte options and it skyrockets in popularity.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
They would definitely find the right balance…but I would guess it would still be north of $15/month.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
I’ve been saying this for years and if this doesn’t happen I’m quitting my job to make it happen. What sports needs is a show or network modeled after The Daily Show i.e. a forum where sports media is humorously and intelligently critiqued and held accountable.
Or put simply a network or show about other sports networks and shows.
The problem with this idea is that a majority of people who devote hours per week watching non-live event sports aren’t the kind of people who want to be talked to intelligently about sports since this approach would involve too much “Who the fuck knows?” honesty.
So yeah it wouldn’t be the most popular thing on TV but I think it could be profitable as a niche option.
March 30th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Right…but you know your cable provider currently only pays about $5/account for ESPN, right?
/numbers approximate
March 30th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
So FJM in TV form?
March 30th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
yes something like fire joe morgan but on TV and armed with quack research staff.
March 30th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
All Disney would have to do is package Disney and Espn channels and cha-ching. 90% of cable homes at higher prices.
